Fans of British television and murder mysteries, in general, will be delighted to hear Midsomer Murders Series 20 is now available on not one, but two incredible streaming services in the U.S.
For a show to last that long, you know it has to be good, and I can attest Midsomer Murders is well worth watching.
If you haven't started watching yet, now is the perfect time to start, especially for completionists like me because every episode is now available to watch from start to finish.
Called “Phenomenally enjoyable… this show has only gotten better and better through the years” (Paper magazine) and easily one of the world’s most popular detective series, Midsomer Murders has entertained audiences for more than two decades after premiering in 1997.
Inspired by the novels of Caroline Graham, modern master of the English village mystery, the ongoing series stars Neil Dudgeon as Detective Chief Inspector John Barnaby.

Midsomer Murders is one of the most popular series in British television history, and Acorn TV has offered up a surprise announcement that the 20th season is now available in its U.S. Premiere. The 20th season features six episodes: The Ghost of Causton Abbey, Death of the Small Coppers, Drawing Dead, The Lions of Causton, ‘Til Death Do Us Part, and Send in the Clowns. It’s a show that has obviously evolved over the course of its impressive run, but it has always seemed a show that takes a serious look at itself, and has thus only improved with age. Inspired by the novels of Caroline Graham, the series stars Neil Dudgeon as Detective Chief Inspector John Barnaby and Nick Hendrix as Detective Sergeant Jamie Winter. Anglophiles have long loved the show that not only offers a pointedly British viewpoint with respect to its own genre, but also...

Updated: U.S. streaming services Acorn TV and BritBox are to air episodes of long-running British crime drama Midsomer Murders ahead of their debut in the UK – a surprising coup for the Svod platforms.
This comes after the two companies snapped up a deal with All3Media International to acquire the 20th season of the Bentley Productions crime drama. Acorn began airing episodes on May 3, while BBC and ITV-backed BritBox will begin airing episodes from the latest season in the U.S. on May 4. Both will appear before they air on commissioning broadcaster ITV, which has still yet to air all of the episodes from season 19.
Based on Caroline Graham’s book series and originally adapted by Anthony Horowitz, the long-running mystery follows the efforts of Detective Chief Inspector John Barnaby, played by Neil Dudgeon, as he solves crimes that occur in the wealthy, isolated English county of Midsomer. While...

Midsomer Murders is back on Acorn DVD with three all-new mysteries that debuted in the UK last year. If you haven’t been keeping up to speed with the long-running drama then you should know that these three stories feature Neil Dudgeon as John Barnaby rather than John Nettles as his cousin Tom. While the identity of the principal investigator has changed fairly recently, it seems like a long, long time since anyone other than Jason Hughes served as the top man’s sidekick. The good news is that Hughes does feature in the these three stories. The bad news is that this is the last you’ll see of him as he left the show in 2013.
Written in the Stars is the first mystery in Midsomer Murders Set 24. As the story begins, the whole community are giddy with excitement about an upcoming solar eclipse.

Midsomer Murders ITV
Despite the demise of Poirot and the unexpected cancellation of Whitechapel, ITV continues to dominate the market for British TV detective shows. Within this genre, there is arguably no show more popular than Midsomer Murders, and more blood has been spilled on the streets of Britain’s most dangerous rural community in the stories included in Acorn’s latest DVD release. Midsomer Murders Set 23 features three tales that are intriguing, unpredictable and just a little bit peculiar.
The trilogy of tales begins with The Dark Rider, a spooky adventure in which local residents are seemingly being tormented by the vengeful spirit of a headless horseman. The guest stars include William Gaunt who is perhaps best known for his role as Martin Clunes’ Dad in No Place Like Home. His onscreen wife is Doctor Who veteran Eleanor Bron while James Callis has his work cut out playing twins.

Midsomer Murders The Christmas Haunting
Midsomer Murders returned to ITV tonight with a new story that was set in Britain’s “most haunted” town. In the opening minutes of The Christmas Haunting, the first unfortunate victim of the night had a brief and fatal encounter with an antique sword. Some of the locals were horrified while others tried to cash-in by linking the killing with the ghouls that are at the heart of the local tourist trade. Ever the realist, Barnaby quickly dismissed the supernatural links and began identifying suspects who stood to gain from the victim’s death. As something of a lady’s man with a penchant for married women, the slain man had no shortage of enemies. Things got ever more complicated as the local pub landlord was revealed to be a rival Casanova but before long he too was bludgeoned to death. As the investigation progressed...

Midsomer Murders 2013
Midsomer Murders returns to ITV this Christmas with a haunting tale but perhaps even more excitingly, there is a baby on the way. Actress Fiona Dolman became pregnant during filming so the show’s creators decided to use her happy event to their advantage by writing a pregnancy into Midsomer Murders. The onscreen baby won’t be seen until next year but as the Christmas episode unfolds, Barnaby (Neil Dudgeon) and his wife Sarah (Fiona Dolman) are already making plans for the new arrival.
Another new face in town will be Charlie Nelson (Gwilym Lee). He is immediately called into action to help Barnaby investigate a murder involving an antique sword and a group of ghost hunters. Did the killing involve the supernatural or is there a more mundane explanation for the baffling crime? Guest stars in The Christmas Haunting include Les Dennis and Elizabeth Berrington.

The Midsomer Murders Christmas special will feature a surprise twist, as Dci Barnaby (Neil Dudgeon) and his wife Sarah (Fiona Dolman) discover that they are expecting a baby.
The new arrival was written into the ITV detective series when Dolman discovered she was pregnant. Her baby, Madeleine Charlotte, was born in July.
"I didn't think I'd ever have a child so I feel very blessed," said the single mum. "I am very happy to bring up the baby on my own as I have incredible support and love from my family.
"Things might not be perfect but from the moment I held Madeleine in my arms we felt like a team. I've got so much love around me, so I know we're going to be all right.
"Everyone on Midsomer Murders has been so supportive and lovely. I went back in October to film the fifth episode and Neil was very excited for me.

It is midsummer which means blood is flowing in the streets of England’s most dangerous county – Midsomer. Over the next few weeks, Acorn Media are releasing not one, not two but Six boxsets of the beloved hit series Midsomer Murders on DVD. Not only that, but they are also releasing the Alec Guinness classic Smiley’s People on Blu-ray. So without further ado, let’s begin.
Midsomer Murders Set 22
The four stories in this set were originally broadcast in the UK in late 2011 and have never been shown in the U.S. All four feature Neil Dudgeon as Barnaby and Jason Hughes as his ever-reliable sidekick. The first of the stories is Sleeper Under the Hill. It centers around a group of Druids and a Stonehenge-like monument that they use during rituals. A local farmer plans to plough up the surrounding meadow, an endeavor...

Lee replaces Jason Hughes, who recently exited the ITV drama as DS Jones.
The Restless actor will play DS Charlie Nelson, the new partner of Dci John Barnaby (Neil Dudgeon).
"I am delighted to be joining such a popular and long-running series as Midsomer Murders," said Lee. "I have always watched it and can't wait to start work on it now, as a regular character.
"It's a bit of a dream come true and I am even looking forward to the various stunts that lie ahead of me - I know Barnaby doesn't like jumping into freezing lakes!"
Dudgeon added: 'We've met and got on really well and I really look forward to working with him this year. It will be good to bring a new character into the series - and keep Barnaby on his toes!"

Back in the UK, Neil Dudgeon has well and truly established himself as the face of Midsomer Murders. Now fans of the show in the U.S. can get their first look at the man who replaced John Nettles (remember him?) with the release of Acorn Media’s Midsomer Murders set 21. The four stories in this four-disc set were aired in the UK just last year and have never been broadcast on U.S. TV.
Death in the Slow Lane is the first feature length story in Midsomer Murders set 21. The episode begins with John Barnaby (Neil Dudgeon) arriving in Britain’s most dangerous village as the heir apparent to his cousin Tom. DS Jones (Jason Hughes) isn’t exactly enamored with his new Dci who mocks his attempts to restore an old race car. Their differences are quickly forgotten when...

The Sicilian Defence. co. ITV Midsomer Murders
B Van Heusen
Midsomer Murders was back on TV tonight with a baffling murder mystery involving members of a chess club. In case you don’t know – The Sicilian Defence is actually a chess strategy. In this story, the killer brought chess pieces to life as the unfortunate pawns of Midsomer were knocked off one by one. While the killing strategy might sound quite cunning the down side to such a scheme is that it doesn’t take a genius to figure out that the killer might be an avoid chess fan. Not sure if Baranaby ranks as a genius but he and Jones were astute enough to solve this one.
At some point they are going to run out of English village cliches to keep Midsomer Murders going but for now at least the good folks over at ITV seem to have...

Guest Column by Alice Maltin When actor John Nettles decided to hang up his badge as Detective Chief Inspector Tom Barnaby and walk into the sunset (or wherever they told us he was going), that ended one of TVs most enjoyable British murder mystery series. Then they had the audacity to return with Neil Dudgeon as Dci John Barnaby—Tom’s cousin! I wished they hadn’t done that…but they did, and you know what? He’s really good. They pulled it off. Tom Barnaby was a smart, likeable and easygoing Dci who never lost a case, or his temper. He had a devoted wife and daughter and a trusty sergeant, Ben Jones (Jason Hughes). His cousin, Dci...

Midsomer Murders Death and the Divas
N Conrad
Midsomer Murders returned to ITV tonight with an entertaining little yarn in which real life imitated fiction. The aptly named Death and the Divas began with Dci John Barnaby (Neil Dudgeon) enjoying a quiet night at a screening of a 1960s Hammer horror style movie. One of the film’s stars just happened to be local resident Stella Harris (Sinead Cusack). However, the Barnaby’s date-night turned sour when DS Hughes uncovered a murder that seemed to have been inspired by the vampiric activities in the film Barnaby had been watching. Things really started to get interesting when Harris’ rather more famous sister Diana (Harriet Walter) arrived in town as the star attraction at the Midsomer Langley film festival. As Barnaby and Hughes began to unravel the murder mystery, the sibling divas soon became central figures in the investigation.

Was the horseman really 17th century aristocrat Geoffrey DeQuetteville? Or was it someone else using the wealthy DeQuetteville family’s past to literally scare the living daylights out of the current inhabitants of Quitewell Hall? Basically, the Dark Rider was kind of a grown up version of the old Look and Read story Dark Towers only with better special effects and a bit more blood and guts. The TV producer behind popular British detective show Midsomer Murders claims he has been treated like "a criminal" since he was suspended for making controversial racial comments about the programme.
Brian True-May hit headlines in his native Britain earlier this week (beg14Mar11) for claiming multicultural characters would "look out of place" and "just wouldn't work" in the longrunning series, which is set in a quaint English village.
His bosses at the ITV network branded his words "shocking and appalling" and suspended him from his job while an investigation gets underway.
True-May has now opened up about his suspension, telling Britain's Daily Mail, "According to press reports I am going to be investigated as if I was a criminal. There's not a lot to investigate."
And when he was told some viewers had branded the reaction to his comments "hysterical", he replied, "You said it, not me. But I agree."
Lead actor Neil Dudgeon, who has replaced former star John Nettles in the series, has also spoken out to defend True-May, telling Britain's Daily Express, "If people have been quite happy for it not to change in 14 years, there's no reason to suppose they're going to want it to change now."...

The TV boss behind popular British detective show Midsomer Murders has been suspended over comments he made in a candid interview suggesting the programme "just wouldn't work" without an all-white cast.
The show's executive producer, Brian True-May, has hit headlines in his native Britain for claiming multicultural characters would "look out of place" in the longrunning series, which is set in a quaint English village.
He told Radio Times, "We are a cosmopolitan society in this country, but if you watch Midsomer you wouldn't think so. I've never been picked up on that, but quite honestly I wouldn't want to change it... Maybe I'm not politically correct.... We just don't have ethnic minorities involved. Because it wouldn't be the English village with them. It wouldn't work.... They (fans) love the perceived English genteel eccentricity. It's not British, it's very English. We're the last bastion of Englishness and I want to keep it that way."
But his comments have angered bosses at ITV, the network behind the show, and he has now been suspended while an investigation is launched.
An ITV spokesman says, "We are shocked and appalled at these personal comments by Brian True-May which are absolutely not shared by anyone at ITV.
"We are in urgent discussions with All3Media, the producer, who have informed us that they have launched an immediate investigation into the matter and have suspended Mr True-May pending the outcome."
The show formerly starred John Nettles, who quit last year after 13 seasons. He has been replaced by Neil Dudgeon.

Director: Clio Barnard Writer: Clio Barnard Starring: Manjinder Virk, Jimi Mistry, Christine Bottomley, Natalie Gavin, Monica Dolan, Danny Web, Neil Dudgeon, Kathryn Pogson, Jonathan Jaynes In what has come to be known as verbatim theatre, transcripts of interviews, hearings and/or trials are dramatised on stage by actors. Rob Epstein’s film Howl is probably the best cinematic example of this novel storytelling technique, but director Clio Barnard really ups the ante by having her actors lip-sync their dialogue to audio-recorded interviews, further morphing the line between reality and fiction. Barnard’s film is about Andrea Dunbar, the West Yorkshire author of three gritty social-realist plays who died in 1990 of a brain hemorrhage at the ripe young age of 29. Dunbar hailed from Bradford, England's rough and tumble Buttershaw Estate (dubbed "the Arbor"). The dialogue in The Arbor is taken directly from interviews conducted by Barnard of Dunbar's family, friends and...

Neil Dudgeon has been confirmed to replace John Nettles in ITV1 drama Midsomer Murders. The Life of Riley star is to make a brief first appearance as Dci Tom Barnaby's cousin Dci John Barnaby tomorrow, before taking on the role full-time in July.
Nettles quit last February following 13 years on the programme. The veteran actor told The Sun: "I wanted to die in noble fashion in the service of my country and then be buried with full military honours in Westminster Abbey. In the event, Tom and his long-suffering wife Joyce will simply retire. It's always better to leave when people want more." He continued: "It has been a joy to be involved in such a long-running (more)...

A harrowing British drama about the aftermath of a fatal hit-and-run crash, "Our Boy" offers a riveting performance by Ray Winstone ("Nil by Mouth") as the grief-stricken father of the young victim. A modest production originally made for TV, it was recently showcased at the Palm Beach International Film Festival.
The film begins with home movie footage in which we see the obviously loving relationship between a young boy and his working-class parents (Winstone and Pauline Quirke). One night, the boy doesn't return home from school. Both parents search frantically -- to no avail. The detectives who come to investigate happen upon some obviously stolen video cameras hidden beneath floorboards and, rather than concentrating on the disappearance, haul the father, Woody, to the station for questioning. When the child's battered body is discovered in a garage, the victim of a hit-and-run, they let Woody go.
Woody then begins a rapid decline as he becomes increasingly deranged and violent over the loss of his son. His wife is equally grief-stricken and becomes despondent at the realization that she is losing her husband as well. Woody eventually alienates friends and family and takes to living in the garage where his son's body was found. When a bizarre turn of events reveals the surprise identity of the actual killer, the film takes an unfortunate turn toward melodrama.
Before that, however, "Our Boy" is a harrowing and detailed account of grief and its aftermath. Winstone delivers a powerful and intense performance that is almost unbearable to watch, and Quirke is equally fine. Tony Grounds' well-textured screenplay sensitively deals with a topic that, in lesser hands, would have proved maudlin. Excellently directed by David Evans, who vividly realizes the characters' gritty milieu, the film is not for the faint of heart (and the thick accents may make it difficult for non-Brits), but it is a powerful drama that deserves wider exposure.
