When you work on a show that has 30 episodes, many of which heavily feature wrestling, some things are bound to leave a mark. On the Netflix series “Glow,” stunt coordinator Shauna Duggins makes it her business to keep those pains at bay. “She has little recommendations to ‘take the curse off.’ As in, little adjustments you can make to make a stunt hurt a little less. Because let’s be honest. It f*cking hurts,” Betty Gilpin told IndieWire. Serving in that capacity on “Glow” for each of the Netflix series’ first three seasons, Duggins has been an instrumental part of one of the show’s standout elements. Series co-creators Liz Flahive and Carly Mensch say that through her work in developing the show’s many wrestling sequences, Duggins has helped keep the possibilities of the show wide open, from the writers room all the way through the production process.

Stunt coordinator Shauna Duggins won her first Emmy last year for “Glow,” making her the first woman to do so. She is now nominated again for Season 2 of the Netflix comedy, which featured major moments like Debbie (Betty Gilpin) breaking Ruth’s (Alison Brie) ankle, the over-the-top “Good Twin” episode and the epic battle royale in the finale. Through it all, Duggins is training actresses who don’t have much stunt experience into genuine stunt performers. “I know what the girls put into training every year to get to the point to shoot on them. To be recognized for that is an honor,” Duggins says. Watch our exclusive video interview with Duggins above.

Netflix’s series Glow, based on the cult ’80s wrestling program made history Saturday when Shauna Duggins won for Outstanding Stunt Coordination for a Comedy Series or Variety Program.
Glow had some stiff competition including Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Cobra Kai, Saturday Night Live, and Shameless, but the comedy ended up body slamming all of them. This was Duggins’ second nomination and first win. Her first nomination was for Alias in 2006.
Upon accepting the award, Duggins admitted she was nervous, but thanked her Glow family.
Backstage, Duggins was a bit more relaxed and said that she was “honored to be the first woman” to receive the award for Outstanding Stunt Coordination.
She gives recognition to her fellow peers and sees them as mentors and friends. She recognizes that even though she is “the first” in this category, she points out that “This show, in general, breaks the mold for women.”

Hell hath no fury like a woman who watches her husband and child get gunned down right in front of her. That’s the premise of Jennifer Garner’s new action movie “Peppermint,” which premiered Tuesday night at the Regal Cinemas in downtown Los Angeles. Upon arriving at the red carpet, Garner jumped out of her car, hiked up her black Narciso Rodriguez dress and dashed across the street, where a crowd of autograph hounds were gathered, shouting her name.
As it turns out, these fans were the only ones to get some face time with Garner, as four days prior — and six days after she drove husband Ben Affleck to a treatment center in Malibu — it was announced that there would be no interviews on the red carpet. Instead, arrivals would be restricted to just a photo call.
Ironically, Garner’s character pays dearly for the bad decisions made by her on-screen husband.

When the Emmy nominations were announced on July 12, they once again cast a spotlight on the lack of diversity in the industry, not just in front of the camera but also below the line. But it should also be noted that the Emmy statistics are a symptom, not a cause, of the industry’s gender and ethnic imbalances.
“The Emmys, the Oscars and other selections are evidence of the opportunities that have been presented to people,” says cinematographer John Simmons, who is the co-chair of the American Society of Cinematographers’ Vision Committee and a governor of the TV Academy. “Our peer group gets together and we judge the films and TV shows that are made. The discriminatory practices of the industry become the foundation of the things we get to view.”
The statistics of the Creative Arts categories are certainly not encouraging if you’re a woman or a person of color.

“Glow” stunt coordinator Shauna Duggins first moved to Los Angeles with a background in gymnastics and an interest in the industry but without a clear direction of the career path she was going to take. Joining a gym that had a lot of stunt performers as members exposed her to a new kind of training and networking opportunity. She worked as a stunt double and performer on shows such as “The X-Files” and “Alias” before moving up to coordinator for “Ray Donovan,” “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” and the aforementioned Netflix comedy.

“Before shooting season one we did four weeks of wrestling training, all the women on the show together for three hours a day, five days a week with Chavo Guerrero Jr.,” says Alison Brie about the process of preparing to play pro wrestlers in the Netflix comedy series “Glow.” She was in New York City on May 17 for a Netflix Fysee event to discuss the series along with her co-stars Sydelle Noel and Marc Maron, and series creators Carly Mensch and Liz Flahive.
