Multiple Emmy contenders this season are focused on the downfall of or investigations into large corporations and institutions: Hulu’s The Curse of Von Dutch: A Brand to Die For, Netflix’s White Hot: The Rise & Fall of Abercrombie & Fitch, Netflix’s Downfall: The Case Against Boeing and Amazon Prime Video’s LuLaRich.
Here’s what The Hollywood Reporter’s critics had to say about each.
The Curse of Von Dutch: A Brand to Die For (Hulu)
Hulu’s The Curse of Von Dutch: A Brand to Die For is a docuseries about a once-inescapable fad, a show that feels bound by two ubiquitous trends of the moment: 2000s nostalgia and true crime. But it fails to divine what should be the big takeaway of any look back at a what-were-we-thinking craze — that just because something is popular doesn’t mean it’s a good look.

One Friday night in February 2005, Robert “Bobby” Vaughn grabbed his phone from a nightstand in his Los Angeles apartment and dialled 911 to report a shooting. He told the operator that multiple shots were fired inside his home, leaving one person dead. Vaughn was also able to identify the person who killed Mark Rivas, his best friend and roommate: he did it himself.
The fatal shot came at the end of a violent confrontation between the two men, and, Vaughn said, immediately after Rivas attacked him with a broken beer bottle.

Exclusive: Von Dutch, the 2000s fashion brand known for its trucker hats worn by the likes of Britney Spears, Paris Hilton and Justin Timberlake, is getting the documentary series treatment.
Hulu has ordered a three-part series based on the story of the brand from the Intellectual Property Corporation, the Industrial Media-owned producer behind YouTube’s This Is Paris.
The series chronicles the true story behind the rise and fall of the iconic 2000s fashion brand. In this character-driven saga, Venice Beach surfers, gangsters, European fashionistas and Hollywood movers and shakers all vie for control of the infamous brand — pushing it from obscurity to one of the most recognizable labels on Earth. After a decade of backstabbing, greed and bloodshed, their lives – and pop culture – will never be the same.

A decade after Ruben Fleischer’s feature debut became a surprise hit, quadrupled its budget, and briefly held the title of highest-earning zombie film of all-time, the “Zombieland” gang finally returns to the big screen. Fleischer and his star-studded cast are all back for more blood-spattered adventures, and the central foursome is all too eager to slip back into their roles as post-apocalyptic survivors. Yet despite the good vibes and amiable callbacks to the previous film, That just doesn’t happen nearly enough.
The good stuff is, of course, still good. There’s the core four — Jesse Eisenberg as the pragmatic Columbus, Woody Harrelson as the gruff Tallahassee, Emma Stone as the snarky Wichita, and Abigail Breslin as perpetual kid sister Little Rock — all of whom exhibit the same flinty chemistry 10 years down the line. There’s Columbus’ understandable obsession with his rules for survival, which are again introduced by...

There’s only one show on TV that has an Oscar Micheaux tribute, John Legend jokingly (?) referring to himself as “Lord Egot,” one-liners roasting Von Dutch, and a tiny dancing robot named the Funk-a-tron. As close as “Peaky Blinders” got last year, the only place you’ll find all of those is on “Sherman’s Showcase,” the excellent new series wrapping up its debut season on IFC.
Told in a broad infomercial format that pieces together the best moments from a long-running (and not entirely real) series in the style of “Soul Train”-era variety shows, the premise of “Sherman’s Showcase” lets it play with pretty much anything that happened in the culture over the last 47 years. Created and written by Diallo Riddle and Bashir Salahuddin, the pair also star in the series, with Salahuddin playing the fictional show’s host Sherman McDaniels and Riddle as announcer/producer Dutch Shepherd.

The Backstreet Boys are doing their bit to hasten the return of Von Dutch hats to America’s malls, priming the pump for the imminent wave of early ‘00s nostalgia with their first new single in five years, “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart.” In what we choose to believe in our hearts is a cheeky wink to Popstar: Never Stop…

He's come a long way from his Von Dutch days. Ashton Kutcher is celebrating his 40th birthday today, yet another hard-to-believe reminder it's been nearly two decades since the That '70s Show donned their first pair of bell bottoms together. But since starring alongside his TV sweetheart turned Irl-wife Mila Kunis and the rest of the gang, Kutcher has made the quite transition from Hollywood playboy to wildly successful actor-entrepreneur and dedicated father. Even when he replaced Charlie Sheen on Two and a Half Men, that was practically a side gig, he had so much going on. The tech junkie has gone on to invest in (and launch) a number of well-known startups, co-found an...

On "American Pickers" (Mon., 9 p.m. Et on History) Monday night, Mike Wolfe was stoked to discover what he called "one of my holy grails" -- the Von Dutch Xavw.
Created in 1966, the bike was a combination of Harley-Davidson Xa frame and a Volkswagen engine. Its whereabouts having been unknown for years, "everyone in the freaking world wants to know where this bike is," said Mike.
Luckily for him the owner was willing to part with the bike so Mike bought himself a piece of history for $21,000.
Find out what the "American Pickers" uncover next on Monday nights at 9 p.m. Est on History.

"Punk'd" is headed back to MTV in just one month, sans Ashton Kutcher and Von Dutch hats.
But nearly five years after the original series ended its run, it looks like the celebrity-on-celebrity prank show is back and it's not holding back.
After releasing a clip of Miley Cyrus and Kelly Osbourne pulling a "There's Something About Mary"-inspired prank with a delivery guy on Khloe Kardashian, MTV is teasing more of what's to come. And it seems like Cyrus is on a roll.
In the first "Punk'd" tease, it sounds like Cyrus gets her boyfriend, "Hunger Games" star Liam Hemsworth. Find out Hemsworth's (and the police department's) response when some unwanted and unclothed guests try to get into her car. As Cyrus says, "Oh my god! Babe! There's two f---ing naked people getting into my f---ing car right now."
Anyone who's seen "Justin Bieber: Never Say Never" knows that...

Ashton Kutcher is passing the Von Dutch hat-sporting "Punk'd" hosting duties when the celebrity pranking series returns to MTV on Mon., March 19.
The show will have a different celebrity host each episode, MTV recently revealed and among them are: Justin Bieber, Miley Cyrus, Kellan Lutz, "Jackass" star Bam Margera and "Punk'd" alum Dax Shepard, who currently stars on "Parenthood."
Now that it's 2012, the pranks, MTV claims, are funnier, bigger and better. Plus, viewers will now get to see what goes on behind-the-scenes to pull off a successful "punk," if you will. "There's a new generation of unsuspecting suckers just waiting to be 'Punk'd' by their famous friends, and fans will once again have a front row seat to see the shock on the faces of their favorite celebs," Van Toffler President Mtvn Music Group, Logo and Film, said in a statement.

Remember Paris Hilton? Let’s do the time warp again, right you guys? Apparently, the orange-tinted sexbeast that made Von Dutch the Von Douchiest in the early aughts is somehow still on television, probably pooping in piles of gold and flashing her freshly shorn vagina on the way to L.A.’s hottest club, Spew. Did you know she calls herself both an actress and a “business woman” who has been “”in the business’ for fifteen years”? Like she wears pantsuits and sneakers on the walk from the parking lot to her office? Can you believe this lady? Remember when people were like, “She’s so much smarter than she lets on,” as if Paris Hilton were secretly some sort of Genius who just happened to appear as if she were pseudo-famous for being an awful, spoiled brat??? Miss you, 2003! And yet, at age 30, Paris Hilton is still around (despite terrible ratings for her show,...

Long before Ashton Kutcher and Von Dutch made "meshies" cool, the mixed-media caps were popular among truck drivers and little leaguers because they were cheap and provided good ventilation during those long hauls and hot summer ball games. The trucker cap craze died down in the mid-00s, but they've been making a comeback in SoCal so I decided to order me up one from Cbm partner SuperHeroStuff (Shs). Being a longtime fan of DC Comics' The Flash—I'm partial to Wally West, myself, but I'll take Barry Allen in a pinch—I ordered Shs' Flash Distressed Felt Symbol Baseball Cap, which retails for $17.99. Ordering was very easy and the cap arrived promptly. I couldn't have been happier with my purchase! The cap I received was sturdy, made of quality materials and had good stitching. The white mesh back of the cap repeats beneath the iconic lightning bolt symbol...

Ed and Lisa's clothing line: Closet Freak. Hey, I'm all for any reality star using the opportunity to promote their business, but I tell everyone the same thing: It better be authentic, from their soul and not just something they grabbed and pulled together before the cameras start rolling. Experienced, well-backed designers with enormous talent and reputations fail every day. Look at Christian Lacroix. I'm just skeptical that these girls are inauthentically branding something that they pulled out of thin air. I don't like the name Closet Freak unless it is for some teenybopper, trendy Von Dutch-type line... Lisa needs to pick a lane. Fame and success is like a pyramid scam. You better make...

Paul McCartney and Heather Mills met face-to-face in court Monday to learn the result of their long and messy divorce. McCartney, 65, arrived at Court 34 in London's Royal Courts of Justice just after 10, humming a tune to himself. Wearing a white shirt, blue tie and his trademark black sneakers he refused to comment to waiting reporters. His estranged 40-year-old wife – representing herself in court – arrived shortly after, looking stylish in a blue and tan vest, blue pants and clutching a pink Von Dutch bag. Flanked by two minders, Mills strode towards court, telling reporters: "I'm sorry, I can't make any comment.

Pop beauty Britney Spears is hoping to avoid a potential dog war with Paris Hilton by backtracking on comments she made about the hotel heiress' pooch Tinkerbell. The singer started her canine family last spring with Maltese puppy Lacy Loo, before buying Bit Bit and more recently Lucky. And Spears attracted headlines when she recently enthused, "My dogs are stylin' and profilin' because Von Dutch just sent them the coolest little clothes. I think my dogs are so much cuter than Tinkerbell." But the Louisiana native is now hoping to avoid falling out with Hilton over her comments. In a statement on her website, Spears says, "I hope none of you really took my comments seriously when I was talking about Bit Bit and Tinkerbell. I was just being silly and of course I think that Tinkerbell is very cute. Who knows? Maybe they will have a little play date together!"...
