Just imagine the very special panel Larry King could assemble for this story. Could this could be exactly the kind of big, important newsbreak that CNN has been looking for to turn things around? Personally, I'm a longtime Larry-head, so I genuinely hope that this is his best divorce yet. And as the great and much-married Steve Earle told me in his own defense the one time that I met him, "At least I'm not afraid to commit." Every once in a while, our American cousins create a comedy series so original, so refreshing, that it makes you sit back and wonder how such an intelligent country could also be the home of Hillbillies and George W. Bush. America gave us Frasier, they gave us Friends, hell they even gave us Will & Grace, and more recently they also gave us 30 Rock.
Rejoin Tina Fey (Baby Mama, Mean Girls), Alec Baldwin (Beetlejuice, The Hunt For Red October) and Jane Krakowski (Ally McBeal) and get set to laugh your head off as 30 Rock: Season 3 comes to DVD on 5th April 2010. It was this 22-episode season which earned 22 Emmy ® nominations – the most ever for a TV comedy.

It appears that True Blood won't be the only TV series from HBO that is set in Louisianna. In fact, HBO Canada announced that Treme, a one-hour drama series taking place during the post-Katrina period, will premiere on Sunday, April 11 at 10 Pm.
Treme begins in fall 2005, three months after Hurricane Katrina and the massive engineering failure that resulted in the flooding of 80 per cent of the city and the displacement of hundreds of thousands of residents. More than half the city’s population is elsewhere and much of the city is wrecked, muddied and caked in mould. The tourists have yet to return, the money that follows them is scarce, and residents can take solace only in the fact that the city’s high levels of crime have migrated to Houston and Baton Rouge. For those returning, housing is hard to come by, with many waiting on insurance cheques that may never arrive.

Last week, I visited Miami before the Cayamo cruise with Emmylou Harris and Steve Earle. I haven’t spent much time there, but as we drove around the city and walked the streets of South Beach, I couldn’t help but think of Dexter, Showtime’s eponymous serial killer, and his slow steps towards redemption. Setting is key to good television, and the best series make you feel like you’re becoming as attached to the place as to the characters....

Five reasons to feel good about the new year. Kasey Anderson - Nowhere NightsFirst the bad news: Kasey Anderson doesn’t do anything Steve Earle hasn’t been doing for thirty years. Now, the good news: for most of the past decade, Kasey Anderson has been doing it better than Steve Earle, and his fifth album Nowhere Nights does nothing to diminish his growing reputation. Kasey‘s sound has evolved a bit, and understated strings pop up now and again to sweeten the usual alt-country instrumentation. But Kasey is the star here, and his straightforward narrative songwriting slots nicely into the hallowed...

The National Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty (Ncadp), the oldest U.S. organization devoted to abolishing capital punishment, gave singer Steve Earle the “Shining Star of Abolition” award for his involvement and role in organizations that oppose the death penalty, as well as the open activism within his songs.
The National Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty was founded in 1976 in response to the Supreme Court decision in Gregg v. Georgia which permitted executions to resume in the United States. Turner Classic Movies has issued its annual In Memoriam video, remembering members of the film community we lost in 2009. This year, it's set to the tune of "To Live is To Fly" by the great Steve Earle, covering a song by his late mentor, Townes Van Zandt.
These videos are always very tastefully put together, never giving someone more or less attention because of how brightly his or her star might have shone. Actors, of course, are seen in their performances, while writers, directors, composers, and technicians are all captured here in black and white photographs. And the TCM videos are fairly specific about whom they honor - Michael Jackson isn't seen here, even though he did appear in films and provide songs for films at various points in his career.

(Originally published in City Link Magazine. You can read the full story here, which includes my list of 10 honorable mentions.) As usual with my year-end Top 10s, I immediately threw out live albums and reissues. It's a weird rule, but I think that any album worthy of the list should consist of new music. So you won't see some noteworthy albums here, including awesome live sets by Tom Petty and Nirvana. Also, a couple of fantastic covers albums by Roseanne Cash and Steve Earle got bumped down to my "honorable mentions" list for similar reasons. With those caveats in mind, here's this: 10. American Saturday Night by Brad Paisley In a year in which Taylor Swift dominated country-pop, it's Brad Paisley, whose previous efforts have ranged from forgettable to borderline-disgusting (see: "Ticks"), who had the genre's best album. Saying you're disappointed in Susan Boyle's debut album is kind of like complaining to your grandma about how lame you think her local weatherman is. You could do it, but what's the point?
Susan Boyle was not meant for you. Despite racking up hundreds of millions of views on YouTube since April, the infamously dowdy Scottish singer has released a full-length album I Dreamed a Dream that is laser targeted to the over-40 demo. When I unwrapped the disc last week, I have to admit I was excited. I'd heard her cover of the Rolling Stones' "Wild Horses" and I was blown away by the depth of emotion and richness of Boyle's voice.
But by the time I slogged through predictably schmaltzy takes on "How Great Thou Art," the forgettable Madonna tune "You'll See" and — ugh — the Monkees' "Daydream Believer," I began to wonder if mentor Simon Cowell had not missed a grand opportunity.

For most of the fifty years since she debuted at the Newport Folk Festival, Joan Baez has dedicated her life and music to fighting for equality and social justice, and for bringing about positive change in the world. On Wednesday, October 14, PBS stations nationwide celebrated her life, music, and activism in the American Masters documentary How Sweet The Sound that was released Tuesday on DVD with a companion CD retrospective. In addition to rare footage and Joan's narrations, the broadcast also featured reflections by musical peers including Bob Dylan, David Crosby, Roger McGuinn, Steve Earle, and political and religious leaders such as Rev. Jesse Jackson and Bishop Ernest Palmer. Mike Ragogna: What music have you been listening to lately? Joan Baez: Mostly what I listen to when I turn on my little iPod is opera. Mr: Which operas? I've had my iPod Touch for a month, and I've discovered an alarming trend: Anytime David Archuleta's "Crush" comes on — which is apparently often, since it's on my Top 25 Most Played — I hit the little tab on the upper right of the screen to hide his photo. Why? Because I can't chance that someone might see his face in the 45 seconds it takes for the screen to go dark — and just turning the iPod over doesn't seem quite safe enough. Is this something everyone does — flipping the screen to reveal the tiny track title only on the embarrassing tunes — or just me? If you are a flipper, on what songs? After the jump, my (alleged) Top 25 Most Played List, which includes three more flips. 1. "More Like Her" by Miranda Lambert 2. "You're an Angel, and I'm Gonna Cry" by Chris Thile 3. "Keep on Trying" by Poco 4. "When Did Your Heart Go Missing?...

Marvin Etzioni Singer/songmaster and producer Marvin Etzioni was born in Brooklyn, the son of a carpenter. Upon relocating to Los Angeles as a child, Marvin fell in love with a mandolin given to him by his grandfather, then the Beatles, vintage country, and rock 'n' roll 45s cast their spell. Post high school, he founded The Model, championed by Springsteen producer Chuck Plotkin. Following some finger-bleeding, Etzioni became a driving force in the '80s alt-country punk phenom Lone Justice. After the band toured with U2 and Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Etzioni went solo. Production credits include Toad The Wet Sprocket, Counting Crows, and Peter Case. Collaborations include Bob Dylan, Ron Wood, T-Bone Burnett, Keith Richards, Jimmy Smith, Jon Brion, and The Dixie Chicks. Etzioni's new 20-track collection includes duets with luminaries Steve Earle, Maria McKee, The...

The albums come in never-ending waves. They blur together. Sometimes they stand out. And when they do, I try to tell you about them. Here are two that have stood out in the past couple weeks.
No Through Road -- Winner.
Yes, the period is part of the title. Thank you, TV on the Radio and latest album Dear Science,. Punctuation is your friend.......
No Through Road hail from Adelaide, Australia, where apparently the music world is stuck in a 2002 timewarp, and where all the cool kids are listening to Interpol and The Strokes. That's okay. I like Interpol and The Strokes, and this band recaptures the sound really, really well. "Party to Survive," the video shown above, sounds like a lost track from Is This It?, and a great one at that. A full week? Green Day don't need no stinkin' week! Despite releasing 21st Century Breakdown three days later than the usual Tuesday drop, the punk veterans will still manage to snag the top stop on the Billboard 200 albums chart next week with nearly 215,000 in sales. That put the trio's latest pop punk opera way ahead of the week's second-place album, the "Hannah Montana" soundtrack, which will hold tight to the #2 spot on sales of 68,000, according to numbers released from Nielsen SoundScan.
The only other debut in the top 10 came from veteran rhymer Cam'ron, whose Crime Pays slides in at #3, thanks to 43,000 in sales. Crime is just ahead of Fame, the unstoppable Lady Gaga juggernaut that moves up two spots to #4 with sales of 41,000. Gaga's album just passed the 850,000 mark,...

No, the “Kidney Now!” benefit on last night’s “30 Rock” finale wasn’t the first time celebrities have come together to raise awareness or money for a cause. In case you missed it, the episode featured Jack Donaghy (Alec Baldwin) pulling in as many favors and blackmail victims as he could to create a benefit show aimed at getting someone to give a kidney to the man who may or may not be his father (Alan Alda). This led to the revelations that Clay Aiken is Kenneth’s cousin, Liz Lemon went to school with Sheryl Crow, Elvis Costello is really an international art thief, Adam Levine can do a really hilarious Russian accent,...

Alt-country music arguably peaked in 1995, with the formation of Whiskeytown, The Jayhawks' Tomorrow the Green Grass, Emmylou Harris' Wrecking Ball, Old 97's Wreck Your Life, Steve Earle's Train a Comin', and the releases of the debut Wilco, Son Volt, and Buddy Miller albums. Don't look now, but that was almost a decade and a half ago. In the meantime, the genre, which once seemed to breathe fresh, new life into hoary country music, has gotten a little long in the tooth. Tastes have changed, and the audience, for the most part, has moved on. That's most evident in the demise of No Depression Magazine, which championed this music throughout its history, and which closed its doors a year ago. But don't write off the old warhorse just yet. Here are three new albums that hearken back to the days when the music was a thoroughbred. One of them...

Darrell Scott's Modern Hymns gets my vote for Best Bluegrass Album of 2008. Here "bluegrass" is used loosely, and is a catchall term for music anchored by acoustic guitars, fiddles, and dobros. It certainly doesn't fit within the fairly narrow strictures of the genre. But Scott, best known as a songwriter (Tricia Yearwood, Dixie Chicks, Garth Brooks) and sideman (Steve Earle) is a soulful, nuanced singer, and here he lends his pipes to songs written by pretty much the whole Sixties/Seventies Folkie Pantheon -- Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Gordon Lightfoot, Paul Simon, Leonard Cohen, John Hartford, Guy Clark, Mickey Newbury, and Kris Kristofferson, for starters.

Susan Sarandon and Richard Dreyfuss are the latest to join the cast of Tim Blake Nelson’s upcoming comedy thriller “Leaves of Grass,” according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Also starring is Edward Norton, who will play twin brothers. One of them is a highly regarded philosophy professor, while the other spends his time growing marijuana. In a sudden turn of events, the professor must return to his Oklahoma hometown, where he goes against a local drug lord.
Dreyfuss portrays the drug baron, while Sarandon plays the brothers’ mother. Nelson stars as one of the brothers’ best friend. Also on board are Lucy DeVito, Rhea Perlman and Steve Earle.
THR says Nelson wrote the script with Norton in mind, although the actor didn’t show much interest in the project until he finally read the script. Produced on a small budget, “Grass” is scheduled to head into principal photography later this month.

The Hollywood Reporter says that Edward Norton will play twins (an Ivy League professor and a small-town marijuana grower) in the new film Leaves of Grass, written and directed by his Incredible Hulk co-star Tim Blake Nelson, who is best remembered for his role as Delbert in O Brother Where Art Thou.
Norton joins Susan Sarandon, Richard Dreyfuss, Lucy DeVito, and singer-songwriter Steve Earle. Keri Russell may be added to the cast, as well. "There have been only a couple of times in my career that I've gone, 'That's exactly what I want to do,'" revealed Norton at a press conference announcing the film in Toronto. "It felt very complete."
