‘The Chapel’ Teaser Trailer – Preview Supernatural Horror Movie from ‘Piggy’ Director Carlota Pereda
The director of last year’s Piggy, Spanish filmmaker Carlota Pereda is back with new movie The Chapel, and Filmax has shared the supernatural horror film’s teaser trailer today.
Carlota Pereda describes The Chapel as “a very personal story” about “how hard being a mother and daughter can be, how, sometimes, we don’t understand each other until we reach adulthood and, like in all ghost stories, it’s too late…. Or maybe, just maybe, this time, it isn’t.”
In the film, “Emma wants to learn how to communicate with the spirit of a little girl who has spent centuries trapped inside a chapel and so she tries to convince Carol, a skeptical and fake medium, to help her. Contacting the spirit will help her to remain close to her sick mother once she dies. What Carol doesn’t suspect is that Emma really does have “the gift” and,...

Spanish actors Joana and Mireia Vilapuig, who rose to fame with Spanish television phenomenon “The Red Band Society,” star in the drama series “Selftape,” which they co-wrote with Ivan Mercadé, Carlos Robisco and Clara Esparrach. The show plays at Series Mania this week ahead of its bow on the Spanish VOD platform Filmin on April 4.
The Vilapuig sisters spoke to Variety about the dark side of adolescent acting, and their experiences as young women working in showbiz.
“Selftape’s” story is based on their experiences as young stars, documenting their struggles after unforeseen circumstances bring them back together, wading through the trauma created by early fame.
With authentic clips from old audition tapes and a slow-burn plot that escalates as the past unfurls, audiences can expect themes of competition, regret, longing and disillusion to emerge through each of the show’s six episodes.
Bàrbara Farré directs the project, which was produced by Filmax,...

Madrid, March March 13 (Ians) Fc Barcelona take a nine-point lead over Real Madrid into next weekend’s El Clasico in the Camp Nou after a hard-fought and controversial 1-0 win away to Athletic Bilbao.
Raphinha’s diagonal shot in first-half injury time was enough to give Barca the points in a game where Raul Garcia and Alex Berenguer hit the woodwork for the home side, reports Xinhua.
Athletic thought they had scored a deserved equalizer through Inaki Williams in the 86th minute, but Var ruled the goal out for a supposed handball when Iker Muniain had won the ball in midfield – although the images seemed to show the ball had hit his shoulder.
Real Madrid warmed up for El Clasico with a relatively comfortable 3-1 win at home to Espanyol on Saturday.
Although Joselu put Espanyol ahead in the eighth minute, Vinicius Jr and Eder Militao turned the game around before halftime.

Barcelona-based indie studio Filmax is hailing into Content Americas selling the semi-autobiographical series “Selftape,” made by members of a new generation of women TV writers and directors now building in Spain.
Described as fiction with autobiographical overtones, the series revolves around the real-life Spanish actresses and sisters, Joana Vilapuig and Mireia Vilapuig who, in a personal touch, found fame as teen actresses in “The Red Band Society,” one of Filmax’s most successful TV productions ever. A decade on, now 27 and 25, they are now figuring out how to move their careers forward and trying to find their place in the film-tv industry and life in a present which is far from certain. That sums up the malaise of much of their generation.
The sisters co-wrote the series with Ivan Mercadé, Carlos Robisco (“Lucky Strike”) and Clara Esparrach (“Three Days of Christmas”).

Since 2022 seems to have affected my enjoyment of all artistic mediums equally, I will refrain from declaring that it’s been a lackluster year for quantity when it comes to great work in film posters. I simply haven’t loved that much of anything this year—posters, film, music, etc.
While it stinks in terms of feeling good on the day-to-day by what I’m consuming, it’s made shoring up end-of-year lists pretty easy. Maybe not in terms of setting an order of things, but definitely in singling out which ones I need to organize.
I even considered making this list a Top 30 instead of a Top 25 since I only really had 31 posters on my final shortlist, but leaving six off is much less anxiety-inducing than one. In the end, all of those that made the cut are superb. Pretending this specific order isn’t arbitrary is just plain narcissism.

Exclusive: [Rec], the 2007 Spanish found-footage horror movie that grossed $32.5M off a minimal budget, is getting a special re-release in the 4Dx format, becoming the first Spanish non-cgi title to be adapted into the technology.
4Dx, originally developed by South Korean company Cj, augments a film experience with practical effects such as motion seats, wind, strobe light and scents. The [Rec] re-release is taking place initially at Cines Filmax Gran Via in Barcelona, where it is coinciding with the inauguration of the venue’s second 4Dx screen, which opened for business this past weekend.
Spanish cinemas have tentatively been getting back to business. Following the lockdown, sites began to re-open in late May with reduced capacity in certain areas. In Barcelona, this is the third weekend of the gradual resumption. But the film slate continues to look thin.

Madrid — One of Europe’s best-known genre auteurs, Jaume Balagueró is teaming with fellow Spaniard Pau Freixas, writer-director of “The Red Band Society,” and creator of Mediaset España’s “I Know Who You Are,” on a small-screen version of “Los sin nombre” (“The Nameless”).
Created by Balagueró and Freixas and currently in development, the series is set up at Arca Audiovisual, Filmax’ TV division.
Based on a novel by British horror scribe Ramsey Campbell, “The Nameless” was Balagueró’s 1999 feature debut and established him as a leading light of Spain’s auteur genre movement.
In its turn, “Nameless’” established production house Filmax, headed by Julio and Carlos Fernández, as a prime mover of horror movies in Spain for much of the next decade.
Film went on to launch the Fantastic Factory with Brian Yuzna and to produce Balagueró’s “Darkness” (2002), which grossed $22.2 million in the U.S., Calista Flockhart-starrer “Fragile” (2003) and above all,...

Barcelona-based studio Filmax has acquired international sales rights to Avelina Prat’s feature-debut “Vasil,” which is currently in pre-production. Filmax also handles Spanish distribution.
“Vasil” is produced by Barcelona-based Distinto Films, which backed Patricia Ferreira’s “The Wild Children,” in co-production with Bulgaria’s Activist 38, which made Mina Mileva and Vesela Kazakova’s “Cat in the Wall.”
“This new Distinto Films’ project tackles very contemporary European issues , with a very personal and deep insight into the story’s characters,” said Filmax CEO Carlos Fernández.
Inspired by the director’s own experiences, the feature follows Vasil, a chess and bridge champion arriving in Spain from Bulgaria. He meets Maureen, an Irish woman who decides to help him, Yorgos, a Greek who gives him work; and Alfredo, who offers his sofa as a temporary home.
Principal photography is scheduled from May in Valencia and Barcelona.

Only a decade ago, Spain was on the periphery of world production, making movies that, as with Pedro Almodovar’s 2019 Cannes competition contender “Pain and Glory,” occasionally sold worldwide.
Now, thanks to an Ott and digital TV revolution, Spain has become a burgeoning global production center.
Take, for instance, Oriol Paulo’s drama “Durante la Tormenta” (“Mirage”), in which a young wife and mother faces the loss of her beloved or the birth of her daughter.
Released in Spain on Nov. 30 by Warner Bros. Pictures, “Mirage” earned a quite modest $867,593. Yet in China, it opened No. 3 on March 27 and grossed $15.9 million.
A Netflix acquisition, the Atresmedia-Think Studio production has moreover gone on to be the only foreign-language movie singled out by Netflix in its April first quarter results, having “seen broad viewing across the world.”
