2023 marks the 40th anniversary of the classic slasher Sleepaway Camp (watch it Here), and 1984 Publishing has announced that they will be celebrating with the release of the “making of” book Sleepaway Camp: Making the Movie and Reigniting the Campfire, as well as a 4-song soundtrack EP! The street date for these releases is October 24th. Hardcover copies of the book can already be pre-ordered on Amazon – but if you want the EP, you’ll have to order directly from 1984 Publishing, and they’re not taking pre-orders just yet.

If there was one horror movie growing up that was my favorite to show friends at a slumber party, it had to be Robert Hiltzik’s cult classic shocker Sleepaway Camp, which proved that eighties slashers weren’t always a dime a dozen. Scream Factory brings this often overlooked gem home to Blu-ray with a stunning transfer and presentation that would certainly live up to Aunt Martha’s high standards.
The story of Sleepaway Camp is pretty much everything you’d expect from a slasher movie and nothing you’d ever expect, which is what makes Hiltzik’s campy and disturbing summer camp tale still one of the more memorable horror movies I’ve seen. It follows a traumatized teenager, named Angela (Felissa Rose), who witnessed her entire family gruesomely killed after a tragic boating accident. She’s been living with those haunting events for the last eight years as...

This is another Blu-ray release, that I wish existed a year prior. Last summer, we recorded a retrospective podcast series, covering the entirety of the Sleepaway Camp series, and could have really used a loaded, Uncut Blu-ray release of the first film. We made due with what was available, though, and now I can revisit Scream Factory’s new Collector’s Edition Blu-ray release of the film, with the image of the DVD still fresh in my mind for comparison. If you are interested in our retrospective look at the series in its entirety, you can check that out here. I’ve seen this movie at least a dozen times, and as many problems as it has, it still manages to entertain me just as much, each new visit. I know the ending is coming, and I know what to expect, but it still has that same impact it had on me as a kid.

Robert Hiltzik's entire movie career has basically been in telling one story, that of Sleepaway Camp. Hiltzik wrote and directed the original, as well as Return to Sleepaway Camp. So who better to discuss Sleepaway Camp's move to Blu-ray from Scream Factory on May 27 than Robert Hiltzik himself.
Hiltzik recently sat down with Dread Central to talk about some interesting aspects of this horror staple, which was released in 1983. "I was in graduate film school at the time and I wanted to do my own film," Hiltzik said, when discussing the origins of the movie. "I wanted to figure out what would get me into the marketplace the easiest. The path of least resistance. I figured dramas and comedies would be very subjective, but everyone likes a good horror film. And I figured shooting a horror film in one location would keep the budget modest. So I thought...

With Lucky McKee and Chris Sivertson’s All Cheerleaders Die arriving on VOD this week, I thought this would be the perfect time to celebrate some of my very favorite “mean girls” of the horror genre. And while I do love our beloved heroines as much as the next genre fan, there’s just something really fun about watching powerful women flaunt their cruelty and penchant for torturing others every now and again.
Check out my Favorite Mean Girls of Horror picks below and see if any of your favorite vengeful vixens made the list! Caution: Some of these may be a bit spoilery for the uninitiated!
Nancy Downs (Fairuza Balk)- The Craft
While she may have grown up a total darling in films like Return to Oz and The Worst Witch, Fairuza Balk was the true epitome of a nineties mean girl in The Craft. Her character, Nancy Downs,...

While they may not necessarily be the villains and get all the glory, there's something to be said for the douchebag characters of the horror genre- they often add to the drama of any given situation, they generally complicate things and they make it oh, so fun to hate them.
That being said, I thought it might be kind of fun to look back at some of my favorite douchebag characters of the horror genre- past and present. The only rule? They aren't the film's "big bad." Be forewarned, though: If you haven't seen some of these films, this countdown may get a little spoiler-y for you.
So, in the immortal words of Kanye West, "Let's have a toast for the douchebags" and check out some of this writer's favorite unsavory characters in the horror genre of all time.

A father and his two children are brutalized in a freak boat accident while they are enjoying a beautiful day at the lake. Flash forward to a few years later where outspoken, smart-mouthed Ricky and his shy, odd cousin Angela are on their way to summer camp. It seems Angela is the sole survivor of the boating accident and now lives with her flamboyantly odd Aunt Martha and her cousin Ricky. As soon as the two arrive at Camp Arawak, Angela becomes the target of many of the other campers because of her shyness and demeanor. But soon, those who taunt Angela turn up dead, murdered in very gruesome ways, from boiling water, to beehives, to a curling iron.
It is hard to argue that this film, which has gained an almost unprecedented cult following, remains...
