Women have always been in the center of Pedro Almodovar’s films, driving his narrative. For the past few years, a woman has also been in the editing chair. For years, José Salcedo Palomeque was his go-to editor, until Palomeque died in 2017. Since then, Teresa Font has been working by the filmmaker’s side, on set and cutting dailies — she cut his latest film, “Parallel Mothers,” where emotion was imperative to the storytelling.
Almodovar says, the two didn’t preestablish what rhythm the editing would take. “The film itself calls for how it wants to breathe. The important thing is that we agree on how we evaluate the shot,” he says. Additionally, when it came to coverage, Almodovar, who often could attempt 30 takes, confesses he used fewer takes than ever for this. “It was not necessary to repeat takes because one or two captured what I wanted.”

They remain nowhere near as well-represented as their male counterparts in the editing Oscar realm — the best-known is Thelma Schoonmaker with eight Oscar nominations and three wins — but women such as Úna Ní Dhonghaíle (“Belfast”), Pamela Martin (“King Richard”) and Teresa Font (“Parallel Mothers”) are seeking to make their mark in the race.
Dhonghaíle was almost finished cutting “Death on the Nile” with Kenneth Branagh when he mentioned “Belfast” to her. “Kenneth shot in a very painterly style. A lot of the scenes were held and had a depth of field,” Dhonghaíle says. “The mise-en-scene was just as important as the rhythm of the film.”
The editor points out there was a simplicity to Branagh’s shooting style and sometimes footage was abundant, but other times, she had only one or two shots to work with. But, every time, she says, “We interrogated the structure. [Sometimes] we shortened them or even...

Pedro Almodóvar’s exploration of motherhood and family, Parallel Mothers (“Madres paralelas”), is a vivid and wonderfully acted piece of filmmaking that, again, showcases the director’s favorite muse – Penélope Cruz – and allows the filmmaker to fully explore his fascination with the stories of women.
In this story, two pregnant women – Janis (Cruz) and Ana (Milena Smit) – meet and befriend each other in the hospital room they share prior to giving birth to their children. Both Janis and Ana are single mothers having unplanned children. Middle-aged Janis is thrilled with the prospect of being a mother while the much younger Ana is much less enthusiastic, almost to the point of regretting her pregnancy. During their hospital stay, the women bond over walks through the hospital corridors, before giving birth to their daughters. Then, after being released from the hospital, the two women reconnect and their relationship, and that of their daughters,...

What could sear your retinas as thoroughly as forbidden cult cinema in 4K Ultra HD? The unrestrained crime-shock transgressors Perdita and Romero cut a path of lust, cult ritual madness and amoral nastiness across the U.S./Mexico border. Kidnapping, murder and theft are among their printable crimes. Álex de Iglesia’s beautifully produced slice of post- Tarantino excess arrives in a completely uncut original version.

Deepa Mehta’s had her fair share of tough shoots. “Water” had to be moved from India following protests and lensed in Sri Lanka, but she never had one that was affected by a pandemic.
“Funny Boy,” released by Ava DuVernay’s Array, is streaming on Netflix. Mehta, who has filmed a couple of other movies in Sri Lanka, loved the book by Shyam Selvadurai, a gay coming of age story between two teens — one a Tamil and one Sinhalese — set against the Sri Lankan civil war between the two groups.
Mehta had to make three trips to the capital of Columbo to get permission to shoot. “It took one year.”
But the delay surprised her. “The book has been out for 22 years or more, and it’s a book that’s taught today at Columbo University. It’s a very popular book that’s been also translated into Sinhalese...

Deepa Mehta’s latest film, an adaptation of Shyam Selvadurai’s Sri Lanka-set coming-of-age novel “Funny Boy,” has been picked up by Ava DuVernay’s Array Releasing, and will land on Netflix this December, Variety can reveal.
The Oscar-nominated “Earth” and “Midnight’s Children” director wrote the screenplay for the film alongside Selvadurai, whose debut 1994 novel is set in Sri Lanka during the 1970s and 1980s and was ground-breaking in its discussion of identity politics against the backdrop of escalating conflict between the island nation’s Sinhalese majority and Tamil minority.
Shot on location in Colombo, the film explores Tamil protagonist Arjie’s (Arush Nand/Brandon Ingram) sexual awakening from a young boy, deemed “funny” by disapproving family, to a teenager enamoured by a male classmate, just as political tensions escalate between the Sinhalese and Tamils in the years leading up to the 1983 uprisings — violence that led into a 26-year civil war.

The Spanish auteur’s finest film in years, Pedro Almodóvar’s “Pain and Glory” is also his most personal, a colorful vivisection of the director’s life and work, his regrets and achievements. No doubt playing a version of the Academy Award-winning director himself, Antonio Banderas stars as Salvador Mallo, a film director in creative crisis who begins experimenting with drugs in the lead-up to a local career retrospective of his work. Banderas won the 2019 Best Actor prize at the Cannes Film Festival for his portrayal, which is the Spanish actor’s most sensitive performance in many years. With the Cannes prize under his belt, Banderas has a strong shot at his first Oscar nomination ever, especially since this is one of Almodóvar’s more accessible efforts.
“Pain and Glory” features several breakouts in the cast, including Asier Etxeandia as Alberto, Salvador’s former onscreen muse who’s now a high-functioning heroin addict.
