On November 13, 1974, at 112 Ocean Ave. in Amityville, New York, a young man named Ronald DeFeo woke up in the middle of the night, took up a shotgun, and went from room to room in his home, systematically murdering six members of his family. DeFeo was apprehended by the police. At first, DeFeo claimed the murders were mob-related, but he later confessed to committing the crimes himself. He was sentenced to 25 years to life for his crimes. DeFeo died in prison in 2021.
DeFeo's murders became notorious with the publication of Jay Anson's nonfiction book "The Amityville Horror" in 1977. After the killings, the Lutz family moved into 112 Ocean Ave., and they claimed to experience a panoply of paranormal phenomena. Flies mobbed the building, and the entire Lutz family reported hearing eerie voices. George Lutz, the family patriarch, claimed to be possessed by a demonic presence that was driving him to kill his family.

When director Aaron Truss got in touch regarding checking out his latest film, the short Pareidolia, I jumped in feet first with a resounding yes. Why? Well, Truss had produced a great documentary on the VHS era, Cult of VHS, and this short film starred one of my all-time favourite actresses Diane Franklin… a performer whose roles in Better Off Dead, The Last American Virgin and later Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure had, I’m sure, shaped my idea of the perfect girlfriend and whose roles in Summer Girl and Amityville 2 stirred something in my teenage libido too!
For those unfamiliar with the term, Pareidolia is the scientific term for seeing meaningful images in random visual patterns. It’s what the Rorschach inkblot test is based on,...

‘The Amityville Murders’ – A Ghoulish and Exploitative Look at the DeFeo Murders [The Amityville IP]
Twice a month Joe Lipsett will dissect a new Amityville Horror film to explore how the “franchise” has evolved in increasingly ludicrous directions. This is “The Amityville IP.”
There’s something frustrating about a film that begins with a lot of potential, and then thoroughly squanders it.
Writer/director Daniel Farrands’ The Amityville Murders is one such film. It’s one of the few “true” entries from the last dozen or so films, in that it actually tackles the Amityville story by focusing on the true crime murders of the DeFeo family. It’s well-shot, looks good, has mostly decent (albeit broad) performances.
These are all things that many of the IP cash-grab entries have been lacking.
Unfortunately it’s also incredibly sensational, relies too heavily on repetitive supernatural elements, and – most egregiously – features a distasteful ending that highlights Farrands’ unfortunate tendency to exploit real life tragedy for cash.
If the name sounds familiar,...

Where do all the ghosts, monsters and other peculiar creatures which inhabit the films we see at Frightfest originate? At least part of the answer lies in pareidolia, the human tendency to perceive meaningful patterns in random visual data. In particular, we see faces, a product of our need to quickly identify real ones in order to escape predators in the wild. Sinead (Diane Franklin) is a university lecturer who has recently stepped in to cover a colleague’s classes on Baudrillard and is looking for examples of the phenomenon in order to explain it to her students. The trouble is, the more she looks, the more she begins to see something which might be real.
There are, as it were, multiple dimensions to Aaron and Aiden Truss’ deliciously creepy little film. At the simplest level, it’s an enjoyably scary experience, a variant on the haunted house story which is nicely.

Few horror sub-genres are as divisive as exorcism movies. For some, they are silly to the point of high camp, outrageous stories about invisible creatures that can take control of normal people and make them do outrageous things. For others, exorcism movies reveal a hidden realm of evil that has a very real impact on our world.
That tension allows a wide variety of approaches within the sub-genre, despite the dominance of one monumental film from the 70s. Exorcism movies can be ridiculous crowd-pleasers, stately dramas, or lowbrow comedies. Whether it’s because of the power of Christ or a really good script, you should feel compelled to watch these great exorcism movies.
The Exorcist (1973)
Of course, it starts with The Exorcist, directed by the late, great William Friedkin. Friedkin wasn’t writer William Peter Blatty’s first choice to direct the movie, which first went to Francis Ford Coppola and Peter Bogdanovich.

Waking Nightmare begins appropriately enough with Jordan waking up screaming from a nightmare. This has been a regular occurrence since her best friend Jamie killed herself. It’s gotten bad enough that she’s moved back home with her parents Danielle and Jeff.
A visit from her best friend Zoey seems to cheer her up, but that night her nightmares turn into sleepwalking, and while doing that she pulls a knife on her mother. This gets her an appointment with Dr. Doolin who gives her a prescription for Ambien.
The Ambien doesn’t make her start posting racist comments on Twitter, but it doesn’t stop her sleepwalking either. In fact, she ends up walking out of the house...

Better Off Dead is one of two 1985 movies that marked John Cusack’s debut as a leading man. After small roles in Sixteen Candles and Class, Cusack, at only eighteen, nabbed the lead in Rob Reiner’s The Sure Thing, and Savage Steve Holland’s Better Off Dead followed immediately afterward. While Cusack has often praised The Sure Thing and Reiner’s direction, his feelings on Better Off Dead have always been controversial. Holland says that while Cusack attended the dailies, when he saw the cut-together version, he felt humiliated and told him that he would never trust him again as a director. This was problematic as they were in the middle of shooting a follow-up, One Crazy Summer, whose shoot would be more fraught than the collegial Better Off Dead.
So what made Cusack so angry? Better Off Dead is an absurdist comedy that, among other things, includes a...

Twice a month Joe Lipsett will dissect a new Amityville Horror film to explore how the “franchise” has evolved in increasingly ludicrous directions.
While it’s easy to appreciate the grounded, almost stoic nature of the original, it’s hard not to enjoy the outright campiness of Amityville 2: The Possession. The sequel, which never explicitly mentions the Lutzs due to real life legal issues, is an absolutely wild ride.
Written by Fright Night Part 2 and Halloween 3: Season of the Witch’s Tommy Lee Wallace, the second film in the Amityville franchise crams in over the top performances, incest and more than a few nods to horror trends, including both the infamous Pov shots from slasher films like Halloween and Black Christmas, and a narrative riff on The Exorcist.
The film tells the story of the Montelli family, an Italian American family that moves into the now iconic house.

If you watched an action, sci-fi, or horror movie in the 1980s, there was a good chance it was produced by Cannon Films. The studio — perhaps the last great home of B-movie and exploitation classics — was founded in 1967 but hit its apex between 1979 and 1987, releasing scores of films that (mostly) no one would call high cinema but which delivered thrills, chills and plenty of blood, action, and fire on a budget.
Tapping into the massive market for both high and low concept fare — the 1980s equivalent of drive-in double bill fillers — Cannon, under the leadership of Israeli cousins Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus, were perhaps best known for churning out chintzy crowdpleasers like the Chuck Norris-starring Missing in Action and The Delta Force along with a slew of Death Wish sequels.
But the company also produced titillating titles like Lady Chatterley’s Lover, slasher fare such as Schizoid and New Year’s Evil,...

Despite taking a break a few times Diane Franklin is still very active in show business and has been working steadily as of late as she has a couple of movies that are set to come out in 2020 titled High Holiday and Waking Nightmare. While there aren’t any real concrete details about either movie it’s enough to see that she’s been keeping her career on track even though she took a break from 1991 to 1999 and then from 2000 to 2006. It would seem a good part of her career has been bound up in short films, TV

Diane Franklin is an iconic 80s film actress, known for her dark curly hair and winning smile. Diane started with modeling, theater, commercials, and soap opera work. She then won the lead role as the dream girl, Karen, in cult classic The Last American Virgin (1982) and soon after played the daughter, Patricia Montelli in Amityville II: The Possession. Her break-out film role was the spirited French-exchange student, Monique Junot, opposite John Cusack in the off-beat comedy Better Off Dead. She also played the medieval Princess-babe, Joanna in the iconic comedy, Bill & Ted’S Excellent Adventure.
Diane Franklin in Amityville II: The Possession
Amityville II: The Possession was a 1982 prequel to the hit film The Amityville Horror (1979). It told of the true story of Ron Defeo Jr., who had massacred his family in 1974 in the house that subsequently sold to the Lutz family, who claimed it was haunted. Diane Franklin played Defeo’s younger sister.

There’s a reason that this particular story keeps getting told over and over again. A family, seemingly perfect, that up and butchers themselves? Yeah, that’s fascinating. Whether it’s because of demonic forces or (more likely) just your garden variety insanity, there’s something there that makes for potentially strong horror filmmaking. Alas, that’s rarely the case, and this week’s new offering, The Amityville Murders, does nothing to reverse the trend. It avoids being outwardly terrible, but still ends up bland, unremarkable, and among the least interesting releases of 2019 so far. The movie is an origin story, telling the tale of the first killings that inspired this urban legend. As the official plot synopsis states: “On the night of November 13, 1974, Ronald DeFeo, Jr. took a high-powered rifle and murdered his entire family as they slept. At his trial, DeFeo claimed that “voices” in the house commanded him to kill.

As horror fans (might or might not) know, you can’t welcome the dawning of a new year without another direct-to-vod Amityville horror story. Did you see the one about an Amityville dollhouse? Amityville theater? Amityville mantle clock. Hungry franchise filmmakers have long woven their individual threads into Long Island’s haunted history, but Daniel Farrands’ The Amityville Murders eyes a return to “factuality.” Based on the true story of Ronnie DeFeo, this is the crime that started it all.
Thank Paimon. An Amityville movie that’s finally based on actual events. Too bad it’s exhaustingly inferior to most canon or non-canon Amityville flicks – a sheepish drag that steals from Paranormal Activity around every ominous corner.
Farrands transports viewers to the three-week period where Ronald “Butch” DeFeo Jr. (John Robinson) becomes possessed by voices (according to testimonial), walls himself from reality, and eventually murders his family on November 13th,...

All of the films that have been made about the infamous Amityville house have focused on the creepy horrific ghost stories that surround it after the murders that took place there. This new film, The Amityville Murders, will focus on the story of the family that was murdered in the house prior to the hauntings.
On the night of November 13, 1974, Ronald DeFeo, Jr. took a high-powered rifle and murdered his entire family as they slept. At his trial, DeFeo claimed that “voices” in the house commanded him to kill. This is their story.

The Amityville franchise has brought us a whopping 18 installments to date. Inspired by the critical and financial success of 1979’s The Amityville Horror (which still stands as one of the most commercially successful independent movies ever produced), we’ve been seeing various, remakes and reboots for decades now, but none of them have been able to reach the same level as the original.
The most recent effort was the dreadful Amityville: The Awakening – you can read our review here – and though it was a pretty dull and uninspired watch, the series will soldier on next year with The Amityville Murders. Like its predecessor, it doesn’t look like it’ll be able to return this once bankable franchise to its former glory, but fans of the series will no doubt be keen to check it out and to drum up some excitement, we’ve now got a new poster to feast on.

"What've we done!?" "We awakened them." Skyline has released a new official trailer for the horror prequel The Amityville Murders, written and directed by filmmaker Daniel Ferrands. This is yet another horror movie in the never-ending Amityville series, and it looks just as forgettable as most of the other films. Did Amityville: The Awakening ever get released? It was shelved for years and never even saw the light of day. Anyway. This one takes us back to the beginning. On the night of November 13th, 1974, Ronald DeFeo, Jr. took his rifle and murdered his entire family as they slept. At his trial, DeFeo claimed "voices" in the house told him to kill. Inspired by the critical and financial success of 1979’s The Amityville Horror (which is still one of the most commercially successful indie movies ever), various filmmakers have been churning out sequels, remakes and reboots for decades now, but none of them have quite reached the same level as the original.

The Amityville haunting has been the subject of an endless parade of films dating back to 1979’s The Amityville Horror, but what’s less common to see is a whole movie dedicated to the tragedy that preceded this alleged case of paranormal activity. That’s where The Amityville Murders comes in, with the film set to offer a fictionalized account of the events leading up to the night Ronald DeFeo, Jr. murdered his family with a high-powered rifle – a crime he later claimed to have committed after hearing voices in the house plotting against him.
The feature will be released by Skyline Entertainment, who’ve just shared a new photo from the movie, in which John Robinson (Elephant) can be seen brandishing his gun in the role of DeFeo. The unveiling came with a statement from Skyline CEO Jim Jacobsen, who praised writer-director Daniel Farrands for his work:

A lot of slashers in the early ‘80s leaned on a mystery component, so it would only seem natural that the small screen would adapt this method to attract the horror crowd; however, being unable to show anything by network standards leaves you with only the mystery of the killer to fall back on. Such is the case with Deadly Lessons (1983), a fun enough slasher without the slashing and a stacked cast.
Originally broadcast on March 7th as The ABC Monday Night Movie, Deadly Lessons was schooled by Alice/One Day at a Time on CBS and NBC rolled out their own movie competition; but ABC always had a knack for attracting strong casts and interesting horror based material. Deadly Lessons has the cast part nailed, and offers up an interesting enough thriller as long as you’re not expecting too many slasher tropes, small screen or not.

With the highly-anticipated horror Death House being released in cinemas on 23rd February 2018, I got a chance to speak with actor Yan Birch about the legacy of People Under the Stairs (1991), his character in Death House and hanging out with friends on the set.
How did you first get into acting?
My father was in the business in Sweden. Mostly Cabarets and Comedy shows. He was also a musician, so I grew up in a very creative arts environment. I started with music and then moved on to hosting a TV-Show in my teens. Then it continued from there.
You have had various roles over your career, but you are best known for your performance the Stairmaster from People Under the Stairs (1991). Did you think that the character would still be so popular over 25 years later?
I had no idea that anything like this would happen… I did know anything...
