Guillermo del Toro’s Nightmare Alley, David Cronenberg’s Crimes of the Future and Danis Goulet’s Night Raiders lead nominees for the upcoming Dgc Awards with three each.
The Directors of Guild of Canada unveiled nominations for its 21st Dgc Awards on Nov. 5 on Friday. Del Toro, who shot Nightmare Alley mostly in and around Toronto, did not receive a nomination for best feature film direction.
But del Toro’s tribute to the film noir genre, which starred Bradley Cooper and Cate Blanchett, did earn Oscar-nominated production designer Tamara Deverell a Dgc Awards nod in the same category, Cam McLauchlin a nomination for feature best picture editing, and best sound editing nominations for Nathan Robitaille, Jill Purdy, Dashen Naidoo, Josh Brown, Nelson Ferreira, Kayla Stewart, Craig MacLellan and Kevin Banks.

Amazon and Hulu have swooped for Syfy comedy drama “Reginald the Vampire,” starring “Spider-Man: No Way Home” star Jacob Batalon.
The streamers have picked up the show for select territories, while Cineflix Rights has come on board as international distributor and will be shopping the 10-part series at next month’s MipTV market in Cannes. It’s produced by Thunderbird Entertainment-owned Great Pacific Media.
Hulu has acquired second-window U.S. rights to the series — co-produced with Modern Story, December Films and Cineflix Studios — while Amazon has bought streaming rights in Canada, Australia and New Zealand. The show is in its final week of shooting and is slated for a summer premiere on Syfy.
Based on Johnny B. Truant’s “Fat Vampire” novels, the comedy-tinged drama stars Batalon as Reginald, a newly turned vampire who crashes into a world populated by beautiful, fit and vain vampires. New on the scene,...

Snowpiercer Season 2 Episode 4
Two of the more curious aspects of Snowpiercer is the fact that there’s a cabaret/bar/talk therapy center called the Night Car and that the tea room has become the de-facto church for anyone on board the train who still has faith in some sort of higher power. The need for religious services and entertainment is a known factor, but the fact that both the Night Car and the Tea Room serve more as locations for counseling than their original locations is interesting, to say the least. Like everything else on Snowpiercer, adaptations have been made during the time the train’s been rolling across the frozen world, and the Snowpiercer that Mr. Wilford enters into for the celebration of science is much different than the one he’d envisioned.
The biggest thing that Snowpiercer did with the introduction of Mr.

Snowpiercer Season 2 Episode 3
A friend of mine from high school dropped out of college and bounced around multiple jobs before he got a job he loves. He now works as, of all things, an engineer in a train yard. Rather than taking the trains out on long hauls, he drives to the yard and moves trains around from the shed to the appropriate track and back as needed. The work is hard and outdoors in all weather, but satisfying enough that, last time we spoke, he was still an engineer. Even his relatively easy job is still very difficult, as it takes time both to get trains moving and to get them to stop; a train handles nothing like a car. Trying to drive a 1034-car super train with two disconnected engines up the Rocky Mountains seems like a nightmare, and yet, that’s the...

Netflix has ordered three new sci-fi series, including one starring and executive produced by Kate Bosworth, the streaming service announced Friday.
The shows are Bosworth-led “The I-Land,” plus “Warrior Nun” and “October Faction.”
Here’s the official logline for seven-episode “The I-Land”: When 10 people wake up on a treacherous island with no memory of who they are or how they got there, they set off on a trek to try to get back home. They soon discover this world is not as it seems. Faced with the island’s extreme psychological and physical challenges, they must rise to their better selves — or die as their worst ones.

Netflix is expanding its sci-fi/genre portfolio with three new series orders, to Neil Labute’s The I-Land, starring Kate Bosworth, Natalie Martinez and Alex Pettyfer; October Faction, based on the Idw comics by Steve Niles, and Warrior Nun, inspired by the Manga novels.
Netflix has ordered 10 episodes of October Faction, from creator/executive producer Damian Kindler, High Park Entertainment in association with Idw Entertainment; seven episodes of The I-Land, from Nomadic Pictures Entertainment, with Bosworth also producing; and 10 episodes of Warrior Nun, from creator/executive producer Simon Barry.
They join the recently picked up new sci-fi series The Order, Wu Assassins, Locke & Key, V Wars, and Another Life as Netflix is making in big push in the genre arena as is rival Amazon.
The I-Land marks Magic Mike star Pettyfer’s TV series debut. Bosworth previously did stints on The Art of More, Young Americans and BBC’s SS-bg.

Ash vs Evil Dead, Season 1, Episode 5, “The Host”
Written by Zoe Green
Directed by David Frazee
Airs Saturdays at 9pm (Et) on Starz
Ash takes a step back and Pablo takes the lead in “The Host”, the latest episode of Ash vs Evil Dead. This turns out to be a mixed blessing. On one severed hand, Ray Santiago’s performance as Pablo has been consistently enjoyable since the series began and seeing him receive more focus this week doesn’t disappoint. Yet on another demonic hand, this show needs Bruce Campbell’s Ash. No matter how hokey or uneven Ash vs Evil Dead can become, Campbell never fails to elevate things with his performance. Indeed, Campbell seems to have a better handle on the Ash of Ash vs Evil Dead than he ever had in the Evil Dead films, almost as if all the years of waiting to play the...

"The demon is taunting us by slowly and painfully killing the host." Ash has faced his fair share of misery over the years, but in the next episode of Starz's Ash vs Evil Dead, he could suffer his most stressful situation yet, as teased in a new clip and preview video.
Ep 105 – The Host: "Kelly’s current state puts others in jeopardy. This forces Pablo to make a brave move and Ash to reveal a new side to his character. Ruby and Fisher join forces in pursuit of Ash."
Directed by David Frazee, "The Host" airs Saturday, November 28th at 9:00pm Est on Starz.
"The 10-episode first season of the half-hour series is executive produced by Sam Raimi, Rob Tapert, Bruce Campbell, the original filmmakers, and Craig Digregorio who serves as executive producer and showrunner. “Ash vs Evil Dead,” is the long-awaited follow-up to the classic horror film The Evil Dead.

Ash vs Evil Dead, Season 1, Episode 4, “Brujo
Written by James E. Eagan
Directed by David Frazee
Airs Saturdays at 9pm (Et) on Starz
Ash vs Evil Dead has adopted a “road movie” aesthetic to its weekly routine, having our heroes travel from one location to the next in their quest to vanquish evil. But a side-effect of this format is that each week the audience is more or less treated to a bottle episode. The characters are stuck in one location, then the next episode comes along and they’re stuck at another. This week’s episode, “Brujo”, successfully breaks the mold by having everyone stay in one place while also sending Ash on a wild trip.
Pablo (Ray Santiago) brings Ash (Bruce Campbell) and Kelly (Dana DeLorenzo) to see his uncle (Hemky Madera), the Brujo of the title. The heroes first outrun a huge dust cloud of death — perhaps...

Fans of The Evil Dead films have seen Ash try to escape the Deadite threat in his trusty 1973 Oldsmobile Delta 88, but they've never witnessed him putting the ride's hidden nitrous feature to good use until now. A fresh clip and preview video tease the hellish road trip in this Saturday's episode of Ash vs Evil Dead.
In addition to the new clip and preview video, a behind-the-scenes featurette looks into the practical effects approach to creating the Deadites on Starz's Ash vs Evil Dead series.

Orphan Black, Ep. 3.05, “Scarred by Many Past Frustrations” brings season three roaring back to life
Orphan Black, Season 3, Episode 5, “Scarred by Many Past Frustrations”
Written by Alex Levine
Directed by David Frazee
Airs Saturdays at 9pm (Et) on BBC America
After four episodes bogged down with disparate strands and far more plot than character, “Scarred by Many Past Frustrations” pares down the narrative and in doing so, delivers by far the best episode of season three. It’s no coincidence this upsurge in energy comes the week Alison, Donnie, and their new drug business stay on the bench; with the exception of Cosima’s C storyline, every scene contributes directly to the main thrust of the season and by the end of the episode, even the most seemingly superfluous corners of the show—again, besides Hendrix Pharmaceuticals—gain relevance.
Though much of the season has floundered, Helena’s imprisonment at the hands of Project Castor has been almost uniformly engaging, giving Helena clear motivation and a tangible enemy.

Orphan Black, Season 3, Episode 1, “The Weight of this Combination”
Written by Graeme Manson
Directed by David Frazee
Airs Saturdays at 9pm (Et) on BBC America
This week, on Orphan Black: Helena sees an old friend, Alison considers politics, and Delphine channels her inner Rachel
The season two finale of Orphan Black took a big risk in introducing male clones, theoretically opening up the world and giving star Tatiana Maslany a slightly lessened load moving forward. Maslany’s towering performance has made the series must watch television, for genre fans at the very least, and the prospect of watching another actor explore and embody multiple personas should be exciting. Unfortunately despite a few interesting developments, “The Weight of this Combination” is ultimately disappointing thanks to its mishandling of Project Castor and Ari Millen’s reintroduction to the series as a far more prominent figure.
It may be a ridiculously complicated show now,...

Orphan Black, Season 2, Episode 4, “Governed as It Were by Chance”
Written by Russ Cochrane
Directed by David Frazee
Airs Saturdays at 9pm Est on Bbca
This week, on Orphan Black: Alison regains her dignity, Sarah has a guardian angel, and Mrs. S gets her groove back
Orphan Black has had a solid second season so far, bringing interesting new developments for most of the characters (and enough fun with Alison to make up for her somewhat lackluster arc). This week, things kick up a notch, with more action and suspense and serious legwork done to prop up the less successful corners of the show. A key element of what works here is the focus of the episode- unlike in previous weeks, “Governed as It Were by Chance” is very much the Sarah show. We spend memorable moments with the other clones, but Sarah is our throughline, digging into the mysteries of Mrs.

After making one hell of an entrance in last week’s premiere episode, Orphan Black has lured viewers into the mysterious world of Sarah (Tatiana Maslany), who find herself suddenly amongst a world of clones. Coming face-to-face with someone who looks to be your identical twin is disconcerting, but imagine if you suddenly found yourself popping up everywhere you go. Sarah had leapt at the chance to assume her twin clone’s life as Beth, but that soon proved to be an even more dangerous world that the one she was desperate to leave behind. Beth as a cop was under investigation for a shooting and had begun to piece together the puzzle of all the clones. Stepping into and assuming Beth’s life proved hazardous and intriguing all at once. In a recent press conference call, star Tatiana Maslany and creator/executive producer John Fawcett talked about the challenges...

At this point, the undying love yours truly has for the Canadian cop drama Flashpoint is more than known. The dynamics of its three-dimensional characters, the quality of its episode to episode stories as well as its season/series long arcs, the high standard of acting employed by both its regular and episode specific cast, all these things make for one of the best television experiences anyone can have. This week’s episode was especially important as it’s Flashpoint‘s first go around in the U.S. since leaving the airwaves of CBS for Ion. The episode did not dissapoint. Written by series creators Mark Ellis & Stephanie Morgenstern and directed by pilot director David Frazee (arguably the best of all the directors the series has had to date), “Grounded” follows the story of a group of hijackers who take control and forcibly ground an aircraft in an attempt to free a prison inmate via hostage negotation...

The Toronto-shot procedural Flashpoint has been an outstanding success in the annals of Canadian television. The series is a big hit with viewers in its native country and the 19 Gemini nominations that it received this year testify to the high regard Canada's industry professionals have for the show. Even more impressive, perhaps, has been the success Flashpoint has achieved in the United States. During its summer run on CBS, the first season w was the network's top original scripted series. Not since Due South has a Canadian show achieved that sort of success in a TV landscape where procedurals breed like proverbial rabbits.
Flashpoint is now in its third season on Canada's CTV network. To coincide with this, the first season has been released on DVD by Phase 4 Films in Canada and CBS Television in the Us (a Blu-ray edition is also available in Canada). The set contains all 13 episodes...

The Wizard Of Oz 70th Anniversary Ultimate Collector’S Edition (Warner Bros.) A true highlight in digital restoration technology, Warner Bros. restoration of the 1939 classic is cause for celebration. The Technicolor of the late ‘30s looks as though it was shot yesterday, and is especially stunning on Blu-ray, which was produced by scanning each of the film’s original Technicolor camera negatives using 8K resolution. From this scan, a final “capture” master was created in 4K, yielding twice the resolution seen in the master utilized for the film’s previous DVD release. Judy Garland’s Dorothy is charming as ever, and the entire cast: Ray Bolger, Bert Lahr, Jack Haley and Margaret Hamilton as the Wicked Witch, are all stellar. Four disc set bonuses include: Sing-along track; Documentaries and featurettes; Two 1914 silent films produced by Oz author L. Frank Baum, based on his stories...
