The “One Piece” live-action series at Netflix is bringing in Joe Tracz to serve as its new co-showrunner for Season 2.
Tracz will helm the popular series based on the Eiichiro Oda manga of the same name alongside Season 1 co-showrunner, writer, and executive producer Matt Owens. Steven Maeda, who developed the series with Owens and was co-showrunner on Season 1, will step down but continue to serve as an executive producer on the series.
“Joe has brought a wealth of enthusiasm and experience into our second season that will help take ‘One Piece’ to new heights,” Owens said. “We’re incredibly lucky to have him as a co-captain of this ship. The best crew on the seas grows larger!”
Tracz most recently worked as a writer and co-executive producer on the Disney+ series adaptation of “Percy Jackson and the Olympians.” He previously created the Netflix series “Dash & Lily” in addition to serving as showrunner.

On paper, adapting “One Piece” — a manga filled with rubbery protagonists, giant swords, fish people and flamboyant costumes — for live-action seems like a task as foolish as trying to become King of the Pirates. But for Tomorrow Studios CEO Marty Adelstein and partner/president Becky Clements, it was a challenge they couldn’t resist.
“Because it was such a big piece of IP, beloved all over the world, we’re basically masochists,” Adelstein joked to TheWrap. “We just felt that there was a way forward to do it. And if it could be done, it would resonate with all the fans around the world. It was a challenge we couldn’t not pursue.”
It’s also a challenge that’s already paid off, at least on some level. In early January, the teams at Tomorrow Studios and ITV Studios hosted a screening attended by “One Piece’s” creator, artist Eiichiro Oda.

There will be no second season for Cowboy Bebop. Netflix has opted not to move forward with a second season of the live-action anime adaptation starring John Cho. The cancellation comes less than a month after the series’ first season was released on the streamer Nov. 19.
Based on Shinichirō Watanabe’s cult anime series, Cowboy Bebop followed a group of misfit bounty hunters, led by Spike Spiegel (Cho) as they search for the galaxy’s most valuable criminals. Mustafa Shakir also starred as Spike’s trusted co-pilot Jet Black and Daniella Pineda as the highly-skilled bounty hunter Faye Valentine. The series debuted on November 19.
The highly-anticipated live action adaptation experienced delays over the course of production due to Cho’s on-set injury, which put the show out for seven to nine months. Original anime series director Shinichirō Watanabe was a consultant on the series, and original composer Yoko Kanno returned to score the live-action adaptation.

Netflix has released a new teaser trailer for the upcoming series “Cowboy Bebop” in anticipation of its premiere in exactly one month. The teaser, titled “The Lost Session,” is a standalone adventure comprised of specially created footage that won’t be seen in the series.
The teaser features bounty hunters Spike Spiegel (John Cho), Jet Black (Mustafa Shakir) and Faye Valentine (Daniella Pineda) as they embark on a quick adventure for “a new bounty on the line.” Through shifting colored lenses and moving panels used to differentiate between scenes, the footage exhibits the cowboys battling various foes. Upbeat, horn-heavy music plays throughout the teaser, until Valentine cuts off the final shootout by saying, “Hey nut buckets, there’s no payout if you shoot him in the face.” The trailer ends with Spiegel and Black comedically arguing about who was responsible for losing the payout as the scene pans out to show their spaceship.

Of the many beloved elements of “Cowboy Bebop” — the seminal late-1990s anime series that became a cult sensation in the U.S. after it premiered on Adult Swim in 2001 — arguably the best known is its killer opening credits sequence, set to the singular jazz theme “Tank!” by Yoko Kanno.
The opening credits are so iconic that, rather than release a trailer to promote its upcoming live-action adaptation of “Cowboy Bebop,” Netflix elected to debut the full opening credits for the show during its Tudum global fan event on Saturday.
The series follows a team of bounty hunters, or Cowboys, who patrol the solar system for criminals in their spaceship, Bebop. The crew consists of Spike Spiegel (John Cho), known for his sharp dressing and floppy hair; Jet Black (Mustafa Shakir), an ex-cop with a robotic arm; and Faye Valentine (Daniella Pineda), who spent over 50 years in cryogenic sleep before joining the Bebop.

Exclusive: Derek Kolstad, the screenwriter behind the John Wick series, is collaborating with Amazon Studios to develop a live-action feature film based on the iconic Japanese action-horror manga Hellsing.
“Ever since my brother introduced me to the Hellsing manga and anime some years ago, I’ve been obsessed with adapting it,” Kolstad said. “And when Mike Callaghan and his team managed to secure the rights to then partner us up with Brian Kavanaugh-Jones and Amazon, I mean -damn, dude- this is a dream.”
Written and illustrated by Kouta Hirano and published by Shōnen Gahōsha, Hellsing reimagines Dracula as Alucard, a special agent bound to The Hellsing Organization, under the leadership of Integra Hellsing, great-granddaughter of Abraham Van Hellsing, to aid them in their mission to protect England and the world from vampires, ghouls, and other supernatural threats. The manga also focuses on Hellsing’s newest recruit, a female ex-police officer named Seras Victoria.

“Cowboy Bebop” star John Cho sustained a knee injury on the set of the live-action Netflix series while filming in New Zealand in October, Variety has learned, leading to a 7-9 month break in production.
While the nature of the incident that led to the injury is not altogether clear, it occurred during a rehearsed sequence that was not considered to be a large-scale stunt. Cho is back in Los Angeles, where he will undergo surgery, according to a person familiar with the matter.
Netflix’s “Cowboy Bebop” is a 10-episode adaptation of the original 26-episode anime series from Sunrise studio, about a group of misfit bounty hunters in space, led by Spike Spiegel. Cho plays Spiegel, described as an “impossibly cool bounty hunter with a deadly smile, a wry wit, and style to spare,” who traverses the solar system with his ex-cop partner, Jet, who will be portrayed by Mustafa Shakir.

The show follows Spike Spiegel and his partner Jet Black, crew of the spaceship Bebop, who eke out a living as interplanetary bounty hunters. As they navigate their own troubled pasts, they also become involved in increasingly significant events both criminal and political. Legendary sci-fi anime Cowboy Bebop is getting an American live action remake but will now take a bit longer to see the light of day.
Well, here's something we never expected to see. Cowboy Bebop, the brilliant, space-hopping anime with one of the greatest soundtracks in TV history is getting a live action adaptation for Netflix.
Here's the official synopsis of the new series...which sounds just like the synopsis of the original series. Which is great!

Paramount Pictures and DreamWorks Pictures have released the first photo of Scarlett Johansson as Major in their co-production live-action adaptation of Ghost in the Shell. Shooting has started in Wellington, New Zealand, and the press release came with this official synopsis:
Based on the internationally-acclaimed sci-fi property, “Ghost In The Shell” follows the Major, a special ops, one-of-a-kind human-cyborg hybrid, who leads the elite task force Section 9. Devoted to stopping the most dangerous criminals and extremists, Section 9 is faced with an enemy whose singular goal is to wipe out Hanka Robotic’s advancements in cyber technology.
I've never read the original manga series or seen the anime feature, so I'm going into this one with very little context. Hopefully director Rupert Sanders (Snow White and The Huntsman) will focus more heavily on the story this time around; I'm still interested in seeing him put his visual skills to good use,...

Barely a week has passed since DreamWorks welcomed Game of Thrones newcomer Pilou Asbæk to the burgeoning cast of Ghost in the Shell, and Deadline is reporting that the studio has now turned its attention to Sam Riley for the film’s chief antagonist.
At this stage, the Maleficent star has merely opened negotiations to assume the role of The Laughing Man, a nefarious leader of an extremist group that wreaks terror through the streets of Niihama, the fictional city where the popular manga is based. Creating a special forces unit to tackle the threat head on, Hanka Robotics founds Public Security Section 9, an elite group of enhanced soldiers led by Scarlett Johansson’s badass cyborg, Motoko Kusanag.
Behind the lens for DreamWork’s live-action feature is Rupert Sanders (Snow White And The Huntsman), and he’ll be bringing the beloved anime to the silver screen via a script produced...

Next year, Danish actor Pilou Asbæk will plot course for the mystical realm of Westeros for HBO’s Game of Thrones season 6 – as Euron Greyjoy, no less – revelling in all manner of political intrigue, familial disputes and unabashed fantasy. On the other end of the spectrum, though, will be DreamWorks Pictures’ long-gestating Ghost in the Shell movie, which today added Asbæk as the no-nonsense Batou.
That’s according to Variety, who reports that the actor will now star opposite Avengers alum Scarlett Johansson. She’s set to topline the live-action feature as Motoko Kusanagi, a highly-skilled cyborg ninja who cleans up the neon-drenched streets of Niihama on behalf of elite task force Section 9. Indeed, news of Asbæk joining the nascent production will mark a Lucy reunion on DreamWorks’ manga adaptation, and we’re excited to see how the pair’s chemistry will carry over into this most peculiar setting.

As powerful alternative-content company Live Viewing Japan moves into specialised film distribution, Wendy Mitchell talks to company founder Yokichi Osato.
As head of Japan’s top talent agency Amuse for 35 years, Yokichi Osato has learned that many lessons from the music business can now be applied to film.
With sales of physical CDs down, Amuse - and its 15 subsidiaries and affiliates - knew that live concerts were the way to grow its artists’ careers and now presents more than 1,500 concerts per year. “The music business is shrinking and we cannot sell a lot of CD packages like we did before, so I had to do something,” Osato says.
Now the Tokyo-based company is bringing its philosophy of ‘live-ism’ to film as well.
Two years ago, Amuse launched affiliate Live Viewing Japan as a joint venture with the likes of Toho and Toei, to bring alternative content such as concerts and sporting events to cinemas. “

The Japanese zombie drama Resurrection is coming back to theatres as a Hollywood movie entitled Rainbow Bridge. Oscar-winner Bruce Joel Rubin has been hired to write the screenplay, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Resurrection, which was called Yomigaeri in Japanese, centers around a town in which residents who have been dead for years come back to life and return home to their families. The townspeople, however, simply go about their lives as if nothing is amiss.
The 2003 movie has been described as a supernatural-themed film without many chills, which ought to suit Rubin just fine. He previously won the Oscar for writing the 1990 movie Ghost, but that had very little horror in it; rather, it was more like a love story mixed with some action.
More recently, Rubin adapted The Time Traveler’s Wife, a love story with science fiction/fantasy elements. Starring Eric Bana and Rachel McAdams, it debuted...

Oscar-winning screenwriter Bruce Joel Rubin has been hired to write the DreamWorks adaptation of the Japanese cult hit "Resurrection," tentatively titled "Rainbow Bridge."
The scribe, who has already written an elaborate treatment for the project, will offer the kind of emotionally centered take for which he's historically been known.
DreamWorks acquired remake rights to "Resurrection," titled "Yomigaeri" in Japanese, last year. Akihiko Shiota's 2003 supernaturally themed pic centered on a town in which people who have been dead for decades come back to life. Instead of engaging in zombie behavior, though, the townspeople simply return to their normal lives as though nothing changed. Brad Krevoy, Mike Callaghan and Tetsu Fujimura are producing along with Shiota.
"Gladiator" scribe William Nicholson had initially been hired to write the script for the Steven Spielberg-Stacy Snider studio.

DreamWorks has picked up the remake rights to Japanese blockbuster "Yomigaeri" ("Resurrection") from Tokyo Broadcasting System and tapped William Nicholson to pen the English-language version.
Based on the novel by award-winning author Shinji Kajio, "Yomigaeri" centers on a government official sent to a small rural town to investigate the reappearance of a young child who, after missing for 60 years, returns to his mother not having aged at all.
A commercial success when it was released in Japan in 2003, "Yomigaeri" received four nominations for Japan's top film awards, including best screenplay, director, actress and score.
Brad Krevoy is producing via his MPCA shingle along with Filosophia's Tetsu Fujimura as well as original producer Takashi Hirano.
"Yomigaeri" will mark the fourth Asian film that DreamWorks has brought to the States. The studio made "The Ring" and "The Ring Two" and is in postproduction on a new version of the South Korean film "A Tale of Two Sisters".
The studio hopes to be in production on the remake later this year.
