His difficulty walking was incorporated into the character of Don Tommassino, even after he stopped playing the role. To accommodate his difficulty, the character was written as using a wheelchair for some scenes. The character continued to use a wheelchair in The Godfather Part III (1990). In The Godfather Part II (1974), Tommassino is shown being shot in the legs, explaining his subsequent use of the wheelchair.
