We’ve all met Tracy Flick — the eager-beaver student that charms the right teachers, wins all the awards and corners the big scholarships. Alexander Payne’s witty, perceptive look at High School shows the predicament of a model teacher who can’t help but sabotage a pupil’s run for class president. Reese Witherspoon’s wholly original characterization scores big, and Matthew Broderick plays what is probably his best screen role.

The Lyric Hammersmith will reopen with the stage version of Bugsy Malone, it has been announced.
The adaptation of Sir Alan Parker's 1976 film will open alongside the redeveloped theatre next April. It is the film's first stage production in over a decade.
The production will be helmed by The Lyric's artistic director Sean Holmes, who described Bugsy Malone as "celebratory, inclusive and surprising".
"Bugsy Malone feels like the perfect show with which to open the new Lyric," he said. "A work of left-field genius with young people at its heart, it feels like the quintessential Lyric show - celebratory, inclusive and surprising."
Meanwhile, Parker said that while he has never liked previous productions, he was convinced by Sean Holmes after a series of meetings.
"I've always loved that Bugsy Malone is performed so often as a play in schools but, to be honest, I never ever liked the previous professional on-stage versions,...

Amid the many surprising Oscar nominations this morning – U2, Karen O and Christian Bale – one stood above the rest: Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa could win an Academy Award in March, as lead makeup effects artist Stephen Prouty was nominated for Best Makeup and Hairstyling. In the category, the elderly transformation he and his team gave Johnny Knoxville is up against the teams behind Dallas Buyers Club and The Lone Ranger.

Director Jeff Tremaine pulled off an unlikely victory recently when his film Bad Grandpa dethroned the Oscar-destined drama Gravity for the top spot at the box office. Now firmly established as a lowbrow visionary, Tremaine has locked in his next film project: the sure-to-be-sleazy Mötley Crüe biopic Dirt.

As Deadline reports, Tremaine will direct the long-awaited project based on the 2001 band autobiography The Dirt: Confessions of the World's Most Notorious Rock Band, which was cowritten by members Vince Neil, Tommy Lee, Nikki Sixx...

In what could be a singularly fitting blend of director and subject matter, Deadline brings word that Jackass / Bad Grandpa director Jeff Tremaine is now set to make the long-developing film based on Mötley Crüe autobiography The Dirt: Confessions Of The World’s Most Notorious Rock Band. The book’s loud, lewd, crude and crazy content – written by band members Vince Neil, Nikki Sixx, Tommy Lee and Mick Mars alongside veteran journo Neil Strauss – has been a target of filmmakers for years thanks to the compelling tale of drink, drugs, rock, rebellion, fights and big money deals.MTV films originally optioned the tome when it arrived back in 2001, and Tremaine has been monitoring its progress since then. “I’ve been careful to make this a natural progression,” Tremaine says. “I’ve been offered a lot of scripts but Dirt is something I pursued with everything I had. I’ve...

Laura Linney is taking a well-deserved break.
The Emmy-winning star (she just earned her fourth for her role in "The Big C" last month) has had a varied, decades-long career, with award-worthy roles in theater, film, and television. Her latest movie, "The Fifth Estate," which chronicles the rise of divisive free-speech activist Julian Assange and his website, WikiLeaks, opens this Friday. When we spoke to Linney recently, we learned that she's been enjoying some deliberate down time.
So what does Laura Linney do when she's doing nothing? Like the rest of us, she binge-watches "Breaking Bad." And when she's not immersed in Walter White's crystal meth-cooking drama, she's talking to us about taking on the WikiLeaks story, changing a pivotal moment in "Love Actually," and the gender-bending role she'd love to play.
Bill Condon said he felt an initial pang of "terror" when he took on "The Fifth Estate." What...

When you come across a newsworthy item that strikes your creative fancy and feeds the instinct to turn it into some sort of screenplay is that you are not the only supplicant sipping from this particular muse's font. Jack Abramoff himself would fully appreciate this, both as an unsuccessful Hollywood screenwriter/producer and as a functionally-intellectual piece of human shit. If an idea is good, someone else is probably going to have it, and so you're gonna have to be the first to the finish line with the finished product, or else you're going to be considered derivative and lesser than. A Bug's Life trumped Antz, Dante's Peak edged out Volcano, Capote outcapoted Infamous, Armageddon aerosmithed Deep Impact, Tombstone made Wyatt Earp its huckleberry -- the streets of Hollywood are paved with the corpses of lesser flicks that were released within months of similar tales. Alex Gibney, who has been...

In advance of the world premiere of his new slasher flick "Savage County" on MTV2 this Thursday, October 7, at 11 p.m. (10 p.m. Central), director David Harris guest-blogs to share some thoughts on making the film. Come back Wednesday and Thursday for additional posts by Harris.
Hey, it's David, the director of "Savage County," hoping you'll check out my movie's world premiere on MTV2 this Thursday. MTV News has been cool enough to give me this soapbox to tell you about "Savage County." And, even though I should probably be plugging the trailer, I want to take this opportunity to tell you about some of the cooler "stealth" things we've been up to.
Low-budget movie marketing has always been about showmanship (my boss, David Gale, planted Napoleon in the audience of Trl when he was releasing "Napoleon Dynamite"). But no genre beats horror when it comes to gonzo marketing --...

A high school dropout and single mother puts herself through law school in hopes of earning her wrongfully convicted brother’s release from prison. “Conviction” is based on the astonishing true story; unfortunately, the movie version, starring Hilary Swank and Sam Rockwell, is as on the nose and obvious as the double entendre of its title, resulting in a movie-of-the-week feel. It strives to be “Erin Brockovich” but succeeds little more than the abysmal “Life of David Gale.”
The fault doesn’t lie with the cast. Swank brings a down-to-earth believability to the thinly sketched Betty Anne Waters, although it would’ve been nice if she’d been given more than legal recitations to chew on. The always-electric Rockwell gives his every scene as Tommy Waters a much-needed jolt, especially in an early flashback when he goes from dancing with his infant daughter to pressing a broken beer bottle to a bar patron’s throat.

New York -- MTV is looking for a bit of the same magic that corporate sibling Paramount had with "Paranormal Activity" as it experiments with new distribution and marketing methods in the digital age.
The cable network has teamed with digital information service and marketer Eventful to launch a social media campaign for its forthcoming indie slasher film "Savage County," which it originally had planned to release as a Web series.
MTV still doesn't plan to release it in theaters, but it has added a potential TV run to the mix that would come in October, in time for Halloween.
To help raise awareness and create a sense of investment in the 80-minute film, MTV is working with Eventful to allow folks to "demand" to see the movie at http://eventful.com/competitions/savagecounty2010. If at least 100,000 people want it, MTV2 will air the movie, according to a spokesman (the...

We don't know why the States would get The Ricky Gervais Show before it aired here, but two months after its Us debut the 13 episode series, featuring animated caricatures of Gervais, (looking very much like Fred Flintstone's less famous, friendless cousin), Stephen Merchant, and the man with the spherical head full of bizarre ideas and beliefs, Karl Pilkington, arrives on Channel 4 tonight, April 23rd at 10:30pm. It's basically the very popular podcasts, with animated versions of the hosts along with cartoon imaginings of the topics discussed. Consequently, if you liked the podcasts, you'll appreciate this, with additional senses involved.

Snowy greetings from Park City, Utah, home of the 2010 Sundance Film Festival! This year, in addition to introducing the world to many of the independent films we'll be talking about for the next 12 months, Sundance embraced new media. Through official programs and partnerships as well as non-official events, the possibilities and promise of the Internets as a creative and distribution medium was the subject of much discussion. On Friday, January 22nd, the fest kicked off with Digital Dive, an all-day, immersive event aimed at upping the digital media literacy of attending filmmakers. Jigsaw Global produced the event in tandem with the Festival. Panels were held at the New Frontier on Main (Nfom), the home venue for the New Frontier strand of the fest, which focuses on experimental work that "explores the limits of traditional aesthetics and the narrative structure of filmmaking." In other words, the section features lots of cool,...

Director David Harris sent along some exclusive pics (see them below) from his fright feature Savage County, an MTV production which will be presented in eight 10-minute on-line installments beginning next February. Lensed in Memphis, Tn this past summer, the movie (scripted by Harris and Dan Alvarado) is about a group of high-schoolers who run afoul of a vicious backwoods family, the Hardells.
Savage County is an unabashed homage to vintage rural horrors of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre breed, though Harris notes it has a true-life inspiration as well. “I grew up in Texas,” he tells Fango, “and as a kid, I was 100 percent sure that Chainsaw 1 and 2 were documentaries. We had a big woods near our neighborhood, with a 1800s house and a rambling old man with a shotgun and 100 cats—basically, a slightly less decrepit ‘Grandpa.’ That was the original big scare for me, and there was no...

This year, MTV offered up its take on the slasher genre with My Super Psycho Sweet 16 . Now, the network is exploring Savage County , which culls its inspiration from the mad hillbilly sub-genre. Project is going to be rolled out as an eight-episode web series from director David Harris and producers David Gale ( Varsity Blues ) and Craig Brewer ( Hustle and Flow ). Harris shot the film during the summer on hi-def in Memphis, Tennessee. Leading the cast is Mimi Michaels (pictured, Boogeyman 3 ). Savage County is described as a tribute to The Texas Chainsaw Massacre with "great indie rock and rockabilly music and a twist of teen drama." Set before prom, a mismatched group of high school kids heads to a remote pond to party. When the beer runs dry, the...

Lynn Shelton recently won the Acura Someone to Watch Award at the 2009 Spirit Awards. She continued her lucky streak with the much-lauded Sundance premiere of her latest film, Humpday, which was picked up for distribution by Magnolia Films. The actors starring in Humpday, including Shelton herself, improvised all the dialogue, and the result is a candid and hilarious tale of two straight men who decide to have sex with each other in the name of art.

MTV New Media is planning to help expose Seattle bands to music fans across the nation. "Hustle & Flow" director Craig Brewer and MTV New Media are taking the " Cover" to Seattle where director Lynn Shelton (Humpday) will direct the new series to help expose bands in the area to the rest of the country.
" Cover" will be shot during the month of August in Seattle's clubs, bars, crash pads and streets to give music fans a chance to check out Seattle's musical diversity. The new series will feature all types of music from alt-country, hip-hop, woodsy psychedelia and guitar-infused pop.
"MTV and [Executive Producer] David Gale have turned over the reins to me as an artist to portray the Seattle music scene as I want, which is to say, as it is, as I see it," said director Lynn Shelton in a press release. "I've also chosen bands that are great to hang out with,...

Plot: A cynical newspaper columnist, Steve Lopez (Robert Downey Jr.) befriends a schizophrenic, homeless musician, Nathaniel Ayers (Jamie Foxx), who was once a star pupil at Julliard. The trailers have been running for months now, and to me, it seemed destined to be another insipid, maudlin, wannabe- Oscar bait film.
