When George Lucas and his special effects house Industrial Light and Magic finished shooting "Star Wars" back in the late 1970s, they boxed up all of their props and widgets -- then stored in the San Fernando Valley -- and moved their operation north, just north of the San Francisco Bay. While most of the "Star Wars" props made the trek undamaged, at least one of the X-wings models remained behind by accident. "Star Wars" fans will instantly note X-wings as the single-occupancy, biplane-like spacecraft that the film's heroes used to attack the Death Star in the film's climax.
One of the more forwardly visible models used to shoot the Death Star sequence -- the Red Leader X-wing -- was 20 inches long and was equipped with lights and servos to control the "expanding" of the ship's four wings. It was massively detailed and was painted to look like it had seen some action,...

A long-lost piece of Star Wars history has been uncovered, and if you’ve got a few hundred thousand to spare (at least), you can bring it home. An original 20-inch X-wing model used in the Death Star battle in the original Star Wars movie is set to be sold at a Heritage Auction next month in Dallas, with the bidding starting at $400,000.
The Red Leader X-wing model was part of the collection of late modelmaker Greg Jein and was one of just four hero filming models with articulating servo-controlled wings and lights. “This model has not been displayed or modified since it left Ilm,” VFX historian Gene Kozicki told THR. “For those of us that grew up in the ’70s or ’80s, and those of us that work in visual effects, this model is as significant a find as the ruby red slippers or the Maltese Falcon.“

A fabled piece of Star Wars history that was lost for decades has resurfaced, and is now the crown jewel of an upcoming auction.
An original 20-inch model of an X-wing starfighter used in the climatic space battle in 1977’s Star Wars — believed to be the so-called “missing X-wing” — is part of the collection of late Oscar nominated modelmaker Greg Jein. It will be sold at a Heritage Auction on Oct. 14-15 in Dallas, and the bidding for the X-wing starts at $400,000.
Built by Industrial Light & Magic for Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope, the “Red Leader” (Red One) X-wing is one of just four “hero” filming miniatures with articulating servo-controlled wings and lights, according to the auction description. Hero models were built for close-ups and used in the final battle, including the trench run.

Last night, the Visual Effects Society handed out their awards at their annual gathering. It was mainly a good night for The Jungle Book, which took the top prize, known as Outstanding Visual Effects in a Photoreal Feature. It beat back Doctor Strange, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children, and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, while at the Academy Awards, it’ll be up against Deepwater Horizon, Doctor Strange, Kubo and the Two Strings, and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. It was an expected win, but one that was eagerly awaited to try and figure out the Oscar category of Best Visual Effects. The Jungle Book ended up with five prizes in total, easily besting the rest of the bunch. As mentioned above, this top award ties directly into the Visual Effects category at the Oscars. Not long ago, Mick shared a video showing off the restored version of Star Trek's original U.S.S. Enterprise that's currently on display at the Smithsonian in Washington, DC. Now William George has created a short film called Spacedock that gives us a detailed look into the restoration process. The artists who worked on this are clearly just as passionate about the intricacies of the ship as any diehard Trek fan, and it's cool to see all the work that went into bringing the ship back to its former glory.
This is a short film showing the process of the detail paint work on the conservation of the original U.S.S. Enterprise miniature, used in all 79 episodes of the original Star Trek television series. The detail paint work was done between the 11th and the 23rd of April 2016 at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum’s Steven F.

Today teenagers interested in the world of special effects are a few tutorials and some affordable software away from getting their feet wet. In 1977, the requirements were a bit more elaborate. It involved woodshop, sheets of styrene, and maybe a few surreptitious pictures taken at a screening of Star Wars. That’s how a teenaged Bill George got his start – making models from scratch dedicated to George Lucas’s space opera. Four years later, George was working on the crew of Return of the Jedi. 'Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban' poster. With Daniel Radcliffe. Rupert Grint. Emma Watson. 'Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban' quiz question: Does state-of-the-art CGI equal movie magic? (Oscar Movie Series) Alfonso Cuarón seems like an odd choice for director of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, the third installment in the Harry Potter movie series. That is, if one thinks only of Cuarón's pre-Harry Potter sleeper hit, the François Truffaut-esque Y tu mamá también, while ignoring two of his earlier efforts, the critically acclaimed A Little Princess and the moderately respected Great Expectations. This time around, working with a reported $130 million budget (approx. $163 million in 2015), state-of-the-art special effects, and the Harry Potter franchise, Cuarón surely could do no wrong. At the box office, that is. For although Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban is stylistically superior to Chris Columbus' previous work in the series,...

The Best Visual Effects is often the place where the Academy recognizes what it is frequently accused of avoiding elsewhere: mainstream spectacle. Blockbusters reign in this category, at least at the nomination stage, with fantasy films, franchises and other money-makers always featuring prominently. The branch also has its specific fetishes, at least historically (talking animals immediately jumps to mind), though, in recent years, it has seemingly been all 3D, all the time. There are dozens if not hundreds of individuals who work on a film’s visual effects but the nomination can ultimately be shared by only four of them – usually the special effects supervisor and three visual effects supervisors. While some names are "favorites" of the branch (John Frazier, Joe Letteri), this branch is hardly the most insular and tends to be more concerned about the work on display. We will receive a hint of the way they are...

From his earliest days on Ned Sherrin's Not So Much a Programme, More a Way of Life, the successor in 1964-65 to the satirical television magazine That Was the Week That Was, through to the comedy shows with Rory Bremner in the 1990s and beyond, he was a fixture of barely surprised indifference, with a wonderful line in deflationary, logical understatement. Spike Lee has agreed to give compensation to an elderly Florida couple whose address he published on the internet in connection with the death of teenager Trayvon Martin.
The He Got Game director thought he was retweeting the address of neighbourhood watch volunteer, George Zimmerman, who shot Martin dead in a Florida gated community on 26 February, sparking outrage and protests across the U.S.
However, the address he posted to his Twitter.com page was actually the home of Elaine and David McClain, who have a son named William George Zimmerman - no relation to the Zimmerman involved in the shooting case. They had to flee their home after their address was published.
Lee publicly apologised for the blunder, and the couple's attorney, Matt Morgan, has now revealed the moviemaker has offered them compensation.
Morgan says, "At this point in time, we have come to an agreement with Spike Lee and his attorneys, and at this point, the matter is fully resolved. Spike has agreed to compensate the McClains for their loss and for the disruption into their lives. He's taken full responsibility."
Elaine McClain also revealed the director apologised to them during a phone call, adding, "He was really kind. And when he called us, you could just tell he really felt bad about it. And it was just a slip, and I just know that he really, really has been concerned."...

Sanford, Fla. -- An elderly couple has reached a settlement with Spike Lee after the pair said they had to leave their Florida home after the director help spread a Twitter posting listing their address as that of the man who shot an unarmed teen.
The couple's attorney, Matt Morgan, announced the settlement Thursday. Morgan says Lee called them to apologize for retweeting their address. Specifics of the settlement weren't disclosed.
Elaine and David McClain are in their 70s and say they have a son named William George Zimmerman, who lived in their Sanford area home in the mid-1990s. They say he is no relation to 28-year-old George Zimmerman, who killed 17-year-old Trayvon Martin on Feb. 26.
The killing has touched off widespread protests around the country and expressions of outrage – including from Lee and other celebrities – because Zimmerman was not arrested. The neighborhood watch volunteer has said he acted in self-defense.

An elderly Florida couple were reportedly forced to flee their home after director Spike Lee mistakenly tweeted their address. According to THR, Lee thought he was sharing the whereabouts of George Zimmerman, the Florida man who shot and killed unarmed teenager Trayvon Martin. Instead, he sent out the address of a William George Zimmerman, who is no relation. According to The Smoking Gun, Elaine McCain and her husband -- parents of William George Zimmerman -- have been living in fear since Lee tweeted their address and “took flight last Friday." As the McCain told Tsg, “Maybe we should get a lawyer and send a cease and desist letter to Spike Lee.” Lee's retweet originally came from Marcus Davonne Higgins, who also posted it to his Facebook wall with the message: “Feel free to reach out & touch him.” The address mix-up was apparently Higgins's, who also sent the tweet to 50 Cent,...

Okay, I'm being slightly misleading here. The individual responsible for originally tweeting the incorrect address is one Marcus D. Higgins, twitter handle @maccapone. He tweeted an address that belonged to one William George Zimmerman at Spike Lee, who promptly re-tweeted it to his 240,000 followers. Of course, the address proved to be wrong, because people that tweet under the handle "maccapone" and attempt to incite vigilante-style justice aren't known for their research or fact-checking skills. The people that actually live at that address are a cafeteria lunch-lady, seventy, and her seventy-two-year-old husband. The couple, who have since moved to a hotel, do happen to have a son named William George Zimmerman, whose car is registered to that address, but they're not related to Trayvon Martin's shooter. Higgins initially responded to their son's request to correct the error with the charming "Black power [...]...

The visual effects that we are seeing in movies these days are absolutely mind blowing. At this point it doesn't seem like there's any excuse for a film to have bad visual effects unless the people hired lack talent, or the studio is keeping the cash in their pockets.
There's a lot of good nomination this year such as Captain America, Harry Potter, Pirates of the Caribbean 4, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, and Transformers: Dark of the Moon. Out of all of these I think that Planet of the Apes might take home the top prize, those apes were incredibly freaky looking. Weta did an amazing job with this movie, and out of all the other nominations this was the movie I was most impressed by. What are your thoughts? What movie did you think have the best visual effect in 2011?
Here's the full press release with all of the nominations:

hollywoodnews.com: Over the weekend, the Visual Effects Society announced the nominees for its 10th Annual Ves Awards ceremony, recognizing summer tentpoles (“Harry Potter,” “Captain America”) and surprise hits (“Rise of the Planet of the Apes,” “Hugo”) for their outstanding visual effects artistry in 23 categories of film, animation, television, commercials, special venues and video games.
“The standard of the creative work that is being considered this year is unbelievably high across all categories,” said Jeffrey A. Okun, Chair of the Visual Effects Society. “The judges faced a huge challenge because all of the work was so far above the norm. We’re honored to have the opportunity to focus the spotlight on the outstanding work that has contributed to some of the highest grossing films and broadcast projects of all time.”

Two weeks ago, we got to go to the Blu-ray trailer luanch of the brand new blu-ray box set for George Lucas’ Star Wars: The Complete Saga. Those present were Jeremy Bulloch (Boba Fett), Anthony Daniels (C-3P0) Producer Robert Watts, and Nick Gillard and later in the day, Ilm Digital Artist John Goodson and Visual Effects Supervisor Bill George.
During the panels, we asked about further changes to the Blu-ray and if we’d see any changes in the movie and never got a definitive answer. Well it turns out that there has already been one big change spotted by the chaps over at Cbm who have found new footage from the Blu-ray which shoes a CGI Yoda where a puppet used to be in Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace. I just think it’s hilarious how Lucas can’t leave it alone!

One of the highlights of Empire’s Big Screen this past weekend was the chance to see a little more of the Star Wars Blu-ray box set and to talk with two of the Ilm crew that worked on the films as well as sit down with perhaps the longest serving ambassador for all things Star Wars, Anthony Daniels.
Dave posted the new Blu-ray set trailer which looks necessarily impressive in its new high definition coat and with the 40 hours or so of extras on the discs this, we are promised, will be the last time we’ll have to buy the films, and having seen it up and running I can am happy to say that it’ll be worth your money.

Much is riding on James Cameron’s return to Titanic.
The painstaking conversion of the director’s 1997 film is moving ahead and until today the general public had not had the chance to see Titanic in 3D. During the Fox panel we were treated to a few scenes from the new version of the film, and though our liveblogging was interrupted by the security team at the O2 arena we’re now able to tell you what we thought of what we saw.
In short it was the most impressive post conversion work we’ve seen, and to put this in context after I had dashed from the Fox panel to interview Ilm Digital Artist John Goodson and Visual Effects Supervisor Bill George the question was asked about the 3D Star Wars (they were not working on it and had no updates to offer) their eyes lit up at the...

Ah it’s that time again…The new Star Wars VHS/DVD/CD/Soundtrack/toys are about to be released and we, the loving fans (who Paid for the Prequel trilogy!) are being asked to shell out our hard earned shekels for another version of the two trilogies that inspired god knows how much cos-play.
Of course, this isn’t just any old release with a dust busted image and Han acting in self defence, no sir. These are the Blu Rays. Yes, I capitalised, just as I suspect George Lucas would want, an appropriate level of Rancor. The Star Wars trilogies on Blu Ray, at long last, provided you didn’t download the 1080p torrents. All those new behind the scenes extras! All those revelatory interviews! Hitherto unknown secrets about the making of the films finally being revealed!

The Movie Pool sits in on a Q&A with D.J. Caruso, the director of I Am Number Four, Disturbia, and Eagle Eye.
Caruso made a splash in his directorial debut of the thriller The Salton Sea. After years of directing television, including Smallville, Caruso became an A-list director with such hits as Disturbia and Eagle Eye. At a press Q&A promoting the DVD release of I Am Number Four, Caruso discussed his career and the sci-fi action film. Rather than editing down his comments, we have chosen to present the Q&A in its entirety. Questions asked by Victor Medina of The Movie Pool are noted.
Q: How much of the book had you read when you signed on to direct the film?
DJ Caruso: I had read the manuscript and then a few versions of the book as it progressed.
Q: What was the hardest part of filming I Am Number Four?...

Hang on, we’re making the jump to lightspeed.
Tomorrow the all-new Star Tours—The Adventures Continue, a reimagining of the classic Star Wars-themed ride, makes its highly anticipated debut at Walt Disney World (at Disneyland, June 3), and unless you have a T-14 hyperdrive, it’s about as close as you’re going to get to that Galaxy Far, Far Away.
The entire attraction has been upgraded—from the façade to the queue to the ride itself. Most importantly, the attraction received a 3D facelift courtesy of Industrial Light and Magic. But for this video first look hosted by...

Read our interview with Industrial Light & Magic (Ilm) visual effects supervisor Bill George, who oversaw the creation of the special effects in this year’s Touchstone Pictures sci-fi action film ‘I Am Number Four.’ The movie is set to be released on Blu-ray and DVD, as well as a Blu-ray/DVD/Digital Download three-disc combo pack, on May 24, 2011. George discusses with us, among other things, what his favorite scene in ‘I Am Number Four’ was, and how closely he worked with the movie’s director, D.J. Caruso. Question (Q): How do you decide which movie you are going to work on? Bill George (Bg): Our executive staff reads a script and...

Killer Film had the chance to chat with Ilm’s Visual Effects Supervisor Bill George on his work on director D.J. Caruso’s I Am Number Four, which streets to Blu-ray/DVD May 24th from Touchstone/Disney.
While Bill George’s name isn’t the most recognizable from the great FX house like a Dennis Murren, George’s career spans from some of the best in sci-fi: Blade Runner, E.T., Innerspace, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, and modern great films like Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.
Bill George on getting into the business and Ilm:
As a kid I was into sci-fi TV shows like Lost in Space and Star Trek. When I was in high school Star Wars came out and blew my mind. I knew then what I wanted to do! I started out making models for a hobby after Star Wars came out...

Name a modern-day sci-fi/fantasy classic and the chances are that Industrial Light & Magic (Ilm) visual effects supervisor Bill George has worked on it: Harry Potter, Star Trek, Star Wars, Pirates of the Caribbean, Planet of the Apes and E.T, to name just a few. But it all began with physical models for the Academy-Award winning effects guru (he counts miniature construction and design on sci-fi classic Blade Runner among his work) although the area is less in demand in an era of CGI-heavy blockbusters. .The thing we used to dread hearing was .it looks like a model.," said George, who provided written answers to questions lodged through a moderated online Q&A session. .Now we dread .It looks CGI.. I really love working with miniatures...

In a world that is obsessed with preventing errors and perfection, perhaps it's ironic that despite 11 straight blockbuster movies, Pixar cofounder and President Ed Catmull describes Pixar's creative process as "going from suck to nonsuck."
That's because Catmull and Pixar's directors think it's better to fix problems than to prevent errors. "My strategy has always been: be wrong as fast as we can," says Andrew Stanton, Director of Finding Nemo and Wall-e, "Which basically means, we're gonna screw up, let's just admit that. Let's not be afraid of that." We can all work this way more often.
So, for instance, Pixar does not begin new movies with a script. Far from it. Film ideas begin on rough storyboards until they work through thousands of problems throughout the process in order to take films from suck to nonsuck.
People at Pixar describe storyboards as the "hand-drawn comic book version" of a movie,...

As we've reported in the past, the classic Star Tours Disney ride is currently in the process of being upgraded to Star Tours 2.0, which is set to open up in May of 2011. As many of you know, the old ride was very outdated and definitely needed a reboot.
Above and below you will find photos from the set of the production which secretly took place back in April of 2009. We have a picture of Anthony Daniels holding his C-3Po head, and of the Starspeeder 1000.
It was reported that the "revamp will incorporate prequel characters (like Naboo citizens and Geonosians) along with many aliens from the original trilogy (Aqualish. Bith, Rodians, etc). In the action sequence, the Star Tours vehicle is now going to be chased by Boba Fett. C3PO and R2-D2 are still the hosts… Admiral Ackbar holographically communicates with the Star Tours vehicle."
