With the benefit of hindsight, it’s easy to identify moments that precipitated significant social or cultural changes. But that doesn’t mean that the people involved in those moments knew, or were actively working to achieve them, as they were happening.
“Carol Doda Topless at The Condor,” which charts the explosion of topless (and eventually all-nude) clubs across the U.S. after the documentary’s namesake decided to go-go dance in a breast-exposing monokini in June 1964, occasionally makes the mistake of conflating intent with her decision’s revolutionary impact. Even so, co-directors Marlo McKenzie and Jonathan Parker offer an absolute treasure trove of vintage film footage shot in, around and about San Francisco’s North Beach as they chronicle the parallel lines of her career and the cultural sea change that it precipitated.

In the new Apple TV+ comedy noir series “High Desert,” Patricia Arquette and Matt Dillon play an off-and-on again couple so naturally that it seems like they must have starred together in some iconic 1990s indie movie. Surprisingly, they haven’t, but the off-kilter, sun-baked menace of films like Arquette starrers “True Romance” and “Lost Highway” permeates the new series, which is peopled with what Arquette calls “wild and weird creatures” in an environment that alternates between arid beauty and strip mall desolation.
In “High Desert,” Arquette’s methadone-dependent, perennial wild child Peggy Newman could not be more different than her buttoned-up “Severance” character Harmony Cobel, whether she’s piloting a dune buggy around the desert, swinging from a chandelier in a Pioneertown Old West show or getting mixed up with another half-baked scam. Peggy, who recently lost her mother, needs to raise money to stay in their house. She...

One of my favorite Oscar nominations this year was Mark Bridges getting the call for his work on Paul Thomas Anderson's "Inherent Vice." I only wish David Crank and Amy Wells could have joined him because the design of this film was out of sight (to say nothing of Robert Elswit's lush lensing). Still, it's sort of serendipitous that it's Bridges and Anderson (in the adapted screenplay category) representing the film, as like Elswit, their collaboration goes all the way back to the beginning, but unlike Elswit (who won the Oscar for "There Will Be Blood"), Bridges had yet to be recognized for a PTA movie. I talked to Bridges, who did get his own trip to Oscar's stage for "The Artist" a few years ago, about that and a whole lot more earlier this week. The research and engineering that went into bringing these costumes — and, by proxy,...

Well, it’s nearly August, and summer is officially in full swing. And if you’re a fan of heavy metal and horror, I’ve got the scoop on what you should be sporting on the beach this summer. Forget the polka-dot bikini girls, because right now it’s all about Sepultura, skeletons, and Satan.
There are few things more hardcore than Brazilian band, Sepultura. This Monokini, based on the bands 1985 album “Bestial Devastation”, is the creation of Quebec based Speed Clothing. Back in the early 1960′s, Rudi Gernreich, an Austrian-born American fashion designer, introduced the world to the first Monokini, which was topless.
Here’s another satanic Monokini from Speed Clothing, this time featuring artwork inspired by New Jersey thrash band, Blood Feast. Both of these completely metal Monokini’s will run you about $90. It’s a small price to pay to ensure you look like the spawn of...

The new Moca show The Total Look is a celebration of the fashion/art collaboration between designer Rudi Gernreich, model Peggy Moffitt and photographer extraordinaire William Claxton (who was also Moffitt's longtime husband until his death a few years ago). Gernreich, who invented the topless bathing suit, was once a sketch artist for costume designer Edith Head, but went on to become one of the designers who defined the mod sixties aesthetic with his chic body conscious designs and bathing suits. He and Mary Quant in London pretty much invented the colorful mini shift dress. Photos And Video: Chanel Chic

Cheyenne Jackson, Michael Urie
When asked to comment on Ramin Setoodeh's recent article about how openly gay actors can't convincingly play heterosexual roles, Cheyenne Jackson and Michael Urie straight-out called the Newsweek entertainment writer an ''asshole'' who's ''unconscionable.'' The two out actors were speaking at a talkback after Monday's performance of The Temperamentals, Jon Marans' acclaimed Off-Broadway play about early gay rights activists in the 1950s.
After moderator Frank DeCaro asked Jackson what he thought of Setoodeh's piece, the Broadway star of Finian's Rainbow and TV guest star of 30 Rock said:
It was infuriating on so many levels. Not only does [Setoodeh] say that a gay man can't play straight, he got personal, picking on Sean Hayes in Promises, Promises, [pointing out] certain scenes where he thinks [Sean] is stiff and uncomfortable. And then he picks on Jonathan Groff, who just came out. He's a young teen heartthrob [in Glee]. He's so talented and...

When the series finale of ABC's "Ugly Betty" airs April 14, devoted viewers of the dramedy will see Michael Urie as the flamboyant Marc St. James for the last time. Any of those fans who are regular New York theatergoers, however, will still be able to see him as fashion designer Rudi Gernreich at New World Stages in "The Temperamentals." In fact, it's possible some saw Urie as the Viennese gay activist and creator of the monokini even before he was Vanessa Williams' scheming assistant, because he's been doing readings of Jon Marans' play for six years."When Michael did the first reading, he hadn't been on 'Ugly Betty,' " Marans says. "This was just after he'd gotten out of Juilliard [in 2003]. So he was an actor who was looking for a job.""From the first time I read it, six years ago," Urie says, "I was like, 'This play is really good.

Whatever you think of Milk, there’s no denying that the Oscar-nominated biopic is putting a long-overdue spotlight on the life of Harvey Milk, allowing much of the mainstream audience to learn about his singular achievements for the very first time.
But why stop there? Now that Milk has proven that stirring gay life stories can appeal to more than just a gay audience, Hollywood should think about making movies about the following legends. We’ll even help them decide which to make first by throwing in a rating of 1-5 Harveys for each story’s eventual Oscar bait-ability. That should help land some big name stars.
Montgomery Clift
