With several gowns reportedly being considered until almost the last moment, Zendaya’s choice for the 2024 Met Gala ultimately was a custom haute couture look from Maison Margiela Artisanal by John Galliano as well as a surprise archival look — also by Galliano.
In the hours before the Challengers star and Met Gala co-chair arrived on the steps of New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, the rumor mill had kicked into high gear about who she might be wearing. Multiple gowns were mentioned as contenders, a sign of the power Zendaya wields in the fashion industry.
But her first choice indeed reflected the blend of 19th century romance and modernity that Galliano creates like perhaps no other designer, with elements that subtly evoke the gala’s theme of “The Garden of Time.” The emerald green and electric blue gown is a custom design made of organza and sage-hued lamé crafted...

When Zendaya attended a screening of her new sultry tennis drama Challengers this week, she wore a gray T-shirt with the words “I Told Ya” printed in bold black letters. The casual shirt was a noticeable change from the crisp whites and sour greens of the tennis-themed couture the star has donned during the Challengers international press tour, but it too was a callback to the movie.

Throughout her career, Audrey Hepburn was known for her acting roles and her fashion. In addition to being one of the most acclaimed actors of her time, the celebrity was also considered to be a style icon. While Hepburn was known for her petite frame, her shoe size was allegedly bigger than what fans would expect.

Hepburn died in 1993, and after her death, People Magazine published a profile about the actor. According to People Magazine, Hepburn “created a new ideal of beauty” throughout her career.
“A rail-thin gamine during the zaftig Zeitgeist of the 50s, she created a new ideal of beauty and with the help of her friend designer Hubert de Givenchy, established an impeccable—and frenetically imitated—look predicated on simplicity,” wrote People Magazine.
Even though Hepburn was known for her good looks and fashion, she was still critical of herself.

Pairings between illustrious fashion labels and films with A-list stars make for sure-fire clickbait headlines. But oftentimes, the tactic of using brand name wardrobe to help portray characters and tell the story overshadows the costume designer.

ViacomCBS International Studios is developing a TV series depicting the life of groundbreaking Spanish fashion designer Cristóbal Balenciaga with British director James Kent (“Testament of Youth”) on board to direct and Spain’s Frida Torresblanco to serve as executive producer.
Balenciaga was born in 1895 in Getaria, a fishing village in northern Spain, and moved to Paris in 1937 where he made his mark as an innovative master of haute couture revered by colleagues and contemporaries such as Christian Dior, Hubert de Givenchy and Coco Chanel.
During the 1950s and 1960s, Balenciaga reached the height of his career by unveiling previously unseen styles, fabrics and shapes, such as the tunic, the “baby doll” and shift dresses. Unlike many other designers, Balenciaga was very private and elusive, having given only two newspaper interviews during his 50-year career. On the day of his death, in 1972, Women’s Wear Daily ran the headline “The king is dead.

ViacomCBS International Studios is developing a series on Spanish fashion designer Cristóbal Balenciaga and has attached Testament Of Youth director James Kent to helm and Pan’s Labyrinth producer Frida Torresblanco to executive produce.
Written by Rebecca Pollock and Kas Graham, the project — which is slated to shoot in 2021 — will depict the life of Balenciaga, who helped lead a revolution in fashion, with his precision and perfectionism earning him the admiration of contemporaries, including Christian Dior, Hubert de Givenchy, and Coco Chanel.
In 1917, at the age of 22, he established his first fashion house in San Sebastian, and later opened fashion houses in Madrid and Barcelona, before moving to Paris in 1937, where his work won the admiration of an influential cosmopolitan clientele. In the 1950s, Balenciaga unveiled never-before-seen styles and shapes, which were considered radical designs at the time.
Torresblanco said: “I have long admired the genius of the greatest Spanish fashion designer in history.

“Accentuate the positive and camouflage the rest,” were words legendary designer Edith Head lived by. Crafting wardrobes for stars including Grace Kelly, Tippi Hedren, Bette Davis and Elizabeth Taylor, Head was the mastermind for Audrey Hepburn’s iconic look in “Breakfast at Tiffany’s,” along with dress designer Hubert de Givenchy.
With 35 Academy Award nominations, Head, born on Oct. 28, 1897, remains the most lauded female Oscar contender. Her creativity and use of color and texture continue to resonate with designers today.
Costume designer Avery Plewes, who worked on “The Craft: Legacy,” ranks Head-designed movies “Sweet Charity” and “What a Way to Go!” as some of her all-time favorites for costumes. “There is an irreverence with her use of color that you rarely see,” says Plewes, “There is a fearlessness that I learned from her films. I often question whether my ideas go too far, and her work taught me to always try the crazy idea.

Throughout the histories of cinema and fashion, there has seldom existed a more glorious collaboration than that of Audrey Hepburn and Hubert de Givenchy. The English actress and the French couturier first worked together in the 1954 movie Sabrina, a costuming masterpiece whose iconic fashions and contentious crediting have been previously written about at The Film Experience by abstew. After his uncredited contribution to that Billy Wilder classic, Givenchy would go on to dress Hepburn on and off-screen many more times, though he always got the credit he deserved after the Sabrina kerfuffle.
That was wise of him since, in 1957, he received an Academy-Award nomination for what is one of Audrey Hepburn's most stylish screen adventures, the indelible Funny Face…...

The relationship between fashion and cinema is a complex one, with influence going both ways. Sometimes, runway shows take their cues from the glory of the silver screen, while costume designers can find inspiration on the pages of Vogue. While Academy Awards producers have strived for a much shorter ceremony this year, the annual “In Memoriam” segment will definitely remain. In fact this moment on Sunday’s 2019 event should be extra classy since Gustavo Dudamel and the L.A. Philharmonic will be performing as part of the tribute.

Have you ever come home from the movies inspired to spruce up your surroundings? Cinema is often seen as a reflection of the world we live in, but it can often lead us to new places, giving us a vision of the future.
The sight of Tom Cruise sporting a pair of Ray bans in 1983’s Risky Business gave a huge boost to the company. Though Cameron Frye’s house from Ferris Bueller took five years to sell, it remains an iconic location for film fans and architects alike. Diane Keaton used her own wardrobe in 1977’s Annie Hall and inspired a new phase of women’s fashion. There are numerous examples of how cinema’s visual stylings influences the audience. If it’s on the big screen, pretty soon you’ll see in it the home.

In People’s new cover story about the iconic star’s private world, her friends and family reveal that in her final days, Hepburn thought more about her loved ones than she did about herself and her illness.
“The doctors gave her three months to live. She acknowledged being afraid of the pain but not being afraid of dying,” says her longtime partner Robert Wolders.
Wolders says Hepburn wanted to spend her last Christmas at their home in Switzerland, but getting there proved to be difficult given her fragile health,...

William Wyler’s 1960s screwball heist comedy is a squeaky-clean high fashion vehicle for stars Audrey Hepburn and Peter O’Toole — who of course aren’t really crooks despite pulling off a major art theft. It’s lush, beautiful to look at and directed with verve by Wyler; with some funny jabs at the art world from screenwriter Harry Kurnitz.

Which red carpet is your favorite?
If you said the Academy Awards or MTV Video Music Awards, that's cute, but you're wrong. Your favorite red carpet is the Met Gala, because it's the only red carpet that matters. It's an occasion to see stars wearing ensembles they could never get away with at any other awards show or black-tie event -- for better or worse.
As we prepare for this year's event -- and all the looks inspired by the theme, "Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between" -- look back on 20 of the most outrageous fashion choices that could only happen at the Met Gala.

At this point, what can't Gisele Bundchen and Tom Brady do?
The power couple is presumably still riding the high of Brady clinching his fifth Super Bowl victory earlier this month with the New England Patriots, and now, the two have also reached the pinnacle of high fashion. Bundchen, 36, and Brady, 39, will join the already star-studded hosting committee this year, which includes Katy Perry, Pharrell Williams and Vogue's Anna Wintour. The annual high-profile event will honor Comme des Garçons designer Rei Kawakubo.

The Little Black Dress—From Mourning to Night is a free exhibit currently at The Missouri History Museum (Lindell and DeBaliviere in Forest Park, St. Louis, Missouri). The exhibit runs through September 5th.
The Little Black Dress – a simple, short cocktail dress—is a sartorial staple for most contemporary women. Prior to the early 20th century, simple, unadorned black garments were limited to mourning, and strict social rules regarding mourning dress were rigidly observed.Featuring over 60 dresses from the Missouri History Museum’s world-renowned textile collection, this fun yet thought-provoking exhibit explores the subject of mourning, as well as the transition of black from a symbol of grief to a symbol of high fashion. You’ll also see fascinating artifacts—from hair jewelry to tear catchers—that were once a regular part of the mourning process. Plus, you’ll have the chance to share your own memories of your favorite...

Juggling A Wrinkle In Time and Intelligent Life, in-demand filmmaker Ava DuVernay (Selma) has been tapped to direct The Battle of Versailles for HBO.
Deadline has the scoop, revealing that despite a jam-packed slate, DuVernay is still carving out time to take on new projects, with the latest now being an adaptation of Robin Givhan’s titular novel.
While the evocative title paints a wartime thriller, The Battle of Versailles charts a fateful night in world fashion when, in November of 1973, the top brass of French designers – including Yves Saint Laurent, Hubert de Givenchy, Pierre Cardin, Emanuel Ungaro and Christian Dior’s Marc Bohan – locked horns with five American designers.
Writing them off as relative unknowns from the get-go, it wasn’t long before the likes of Oscar de la Renta, Bill Blass, Halston, Stephen Burrows and Anne Klein began to make a name for themselves in the Palace of Versailles,...

Though she's committed to two other sci-fi projects and Own's "Queen Sugar" drama series, "Selma" helmer Ava DuVernay has taken on another gig - she's set to direct "The Battle Of Versailles" for HBO Films.
DuVernay and Michael Starrbury will co-write the film based on fashion journalist Robin Givhan's 2015 non-fiction novel which deals with the 1973 Palace of Versailles fashion show which served as a fundraiser for the restoration of King Louis Xiv's palace.
The show pitted the top five French designers (Yves Saint Laurent, Hubert de Givenchy, Pierre Cardin, Emanuel Ungaro, and Marc Bohan of Christian Dior) against five then-unknown Americans (Oscar de la Renta, Bill Blass, Halston, Stephen Burrows and Anne Klein, who brought along her then-assistant Donna Karan) in front of an audience of the world's social elite.

Last month, Ava DuVernay signed up to direct two projects in quick succession: Disney's "A Wrinkle In Time" and the sci-fi flick, "Intelligent Life," which is due to be the filmmakers's next movie, with production kicking off this summer. But she's not yet done adding projects to her plate. The latest is "The Battle Of Versailles," which is not the period picture that you'd think it might be. Instead, it's a fashion world drama centered around the November 28, 1973 fashion show that took place at the Palace of Versailles that was a "Captain America: Civil War" style battle between five French designers (Yves Saint Laurent, Hubert de Givenchy, Pierre Cardin, Emanuel Ungaro, and Marc Bohan of Christian Dior) and an American team (Oscar de la Renta, Bill Blass, Anne Klein, Halston, Stephen Burrows and Anne Klein), with both sides showing off their goods in front of the world's elite. Hello, Kendall Jenner! The 19-year-old model made sure all eyes were on her Wednesday night in Paris, when she stepped out in one incredibly sexy number alongside Balmain designer Olivier Rousteing and Bff Gigi Hadid. The ensemble -- featuring a crocheted top, sheer skirt and a black thong -- certainly turned heads as the three attended at cocktail party together in the City of Light. While Gigi put her long legs on display in a green and nude-paneled mini, Kendall's look was all about the booty -- which she showed off to anyone walking behind her. The appearance comes after the fashionista stepped out in another skin-baring look on Tuesday, when she showed a hint of side boob in a Solace London top. She completed that look with high waisted black trousers, a pair of loafers and dark shades. Across the pond, back in Los Angeles, Kylie also showed off...

Did she wake up like this? Twenty four hours after Monday night's Met Gala, Beyonce was still rocking the same high-pony she wore on the red carpet -- this time pairing it with a more casual look. The "Partition" singer was chic as ever in a Balenciaga cropped jacket, a jewel encrusted Guns N' Roses tee, distressed skinny jeans and red patent leather pumps. The look is a far cry from her barely there Givenchy dress at the Super Bowl of style -- but Queen Bey proves this 'do can be surprisingly versatile. Jay-z's other half showed up to fashion's big night nearly an hour and a half late on Monday, but still managed to send everyone into a frenzy over her wardrobe choice. Blue Ivy's mama had some stiff competition that night. Jennifer Lopez and Kim Kardashian also went with nearly-nude looks -- but it was Beyonce's bejeweled,...

CinéSalon Haute Couture on Film opening night - Stanley Donen's Funny Face starring Audrey Hepburn in Givenchy, Fred Astaire and Kay Thompson.
Delphine [Selles-Alvarez] has chosen the perfect movie to open the Haute Couture on Film series. Stanley Donen, who previously co-directed On The Town and Singin' In The Rain, both with Gene Kelly, is a specialist in connecting painted picture book backgrounds, still objects, colours, patterns, studio sets or actual city streets and making them come alive more vividly than any realism could accomplish. The power of fashion as moving art is a part of it. You remember what people are wearing in a Donen film.

Hubert de Givenchy had been contacted by a Miss Hepburn to make a wardrobe for Billy Wilder's Sabrina (1954) and had initially thought the Miss Hepburn in question was Katharine, not Audrey.

Many people may be wondering just why Kim would agree to pose completely nude for Paper, but it's not like she's a stranger to baring it all for magazines - she's posed for Playboy, W, and, most recently, British GQ - and according to Paper's editorial director Mickey Boardman, getting naked for the shoot was "all Kim's idea," adding, "We hadn't planned for her to take her clothes off. Kendall Jenner continues to steal the spotlight at Paris Fashion Week! The reality star strutted her stuff on the runway for Sonia Rykiel on Monday, showing off her toned tummy (and some underboob) in a sheer black crop top and matching sheer maxi skirt. She followed up that risque look by modeling a cream jumper with a striped shirt on underneath. The seasoned model also turned heads at the Givenchy show on Sunday, rocking a very low-cut top and thigh-high, leather peep-toe boots.
