Filmmaker Don Bluth is underrated as it is, and so is this movie. Usually, when people think of penguins in movies, they think of Happy Feet or maybe Surf's Up, but The Pebble and the Penguin (1995) is an overlooked gem that has been passed over and was claimed by critics at the time of its release to be terrible. I'm here to debunk all of that. The story starts out with an introverted penguin named Hubie, voiced by Martin Short, who longs to marry his love Marina, Annie Golden, by offering her a pebble as a penguin mating ritual and custom. However, an evil Gaston-like penguin named Drake, Tim Curry, demands that Hubie give him the pebble, but when he refuses, Drake tosses him...

There's nothing like a Don Bluth animated film. From the wide-eyed whimsy of his characters to his confusing, dreamlike sequences, the work of this animation icon has delighted (and terrified) audiences since the release of "The Secret of Nimh." Some 40 years later, Bluth's filmography has grown to contain some of the most fascinating hand-drawn animated projects Hollywood has ever seen. From nostalgic classics like "An American Tail" and "The Land Before Time" to truly odd flops like "A Troll in Central Park" and "Rock-a-Doodle," the list goes on and on. That begs the question, which films rank as the best examples of Bluth's talents?
From the not-so-great to the ones that continue to make us smile, we'll dive deep into Don Bluth's theatrically released feature films. Sure, there are projects he worked on outside of that specific medium (including direct-to-video projects and video games) To correctly examine this filmmaker, it's...

After seeing the poster and reading up a little on Bite Me I was expecting a romantic comedy in the vein of Life After Beth or Warm Bodies – obviously replacing the zombies with vampires. But that’s not what Bite Me tries to be.
It’s a much more serious movie than I expected it to be. There is some comedy but things are kept straight for the most part and the romance between a vampire and a human is the main focus of the movie. It’s still not quite the movie that it mentions occasionally (Twilight) but it’s perhaps closer to this type of film.
Real-life vampire Sarah is due an audit, which turns out not so good for her and her vampire pals. At...

One has to wonder what it feels like to be in the public eye and still not have people recognize you by name. Some might say it could be a little embarrassing, but others might state that at least the actors are there and can state that they’ve been successful for a while. That’s definitely a better take on it since lamenting the idea that a lot of people don’t know your name would be kind of ridiculous for a lot of people such as Annie Golden, who’s been a part of the entertainment industry for quite a while now.

Bring back the Age of Aquarius! Olive Films returns with the company’s best Signature Edition ever. The show is an excellent choice for a special edition, as seen by the simply terrific interviews in its battery of added value featurettes. Top creative contributors have been tapped for some great memories. Rather than filming a simple adaptation, Milos Forman reinterprets the hit show, allowing Twyla Tharp’s choreographic genius to soak into most every scene — the result is a marvelous melding of theatrical and cinematic effects.

“Sydney Pollack said ‘everything’s a love story’, and it is. Everything is, if you think about it,” says Howard Deutch. He’s chatting to us ahead of the remastered Blu-ray release of Pretty In Pink which he directed from a script by John Hughes, first released some 34 years ago in 1986. It was Deutch’s feature directorial debut, one of several collaborations with Hughes and with his follow up Some Kind Of Wonderful (also written by Hughes) it arguably formed the apex of ‘80s teen romance as we know it.
Deutch is chatting to us via Zoom – the norm during lockdown – but for some reason we can’t get his camera to work. No wall of books to nose at, or Californian skies to envy, just a blank screen. But in a weird way perhaps it’s fitting – we’re flashing back to the ‘80s to recall the story of Pretty In Pink,...

For a show set in one of the world’s most iconic cities, “High Maintenance” has managed to brew up a trademark visual image of its own: The Guy (Ben Sinclair), purveyor of weed to the most wide-ranging of New York clientele, riding his bike down a busy street.
“High Maintenance” Season 3 is switching things up a bit, putting the show’s main dealer inside a moving vehicle for once. Judging by the looks of HBO’s trailer for the upcoming episodes, that also includes some pretty revelatory experiences at a car wash and some rainbow-tinged offerings for some of New York’s most stressed out residents.
Series creators Katja Blichfeld and Sinclair return to the series as executive producers, and the show’s traditional assemblage of one-off guest stars returns with an impressive new collection. Amy Ryan will return to the show after appearing in the early Season 1 episode “Museebat.

When it comes to rewarding the best comedic cast on television, the SAG Awards often simply go with the biggest cast. Recent winners like “Orange is the New Black” (2014-2016), “Glee” (2009), “Desperate Housewives” (2004-2005) and “Ally McBeal” (1998) all prevailed thanks in part to having the most cast members on the voting ballot. Interestingly enough, all four of these were also hour-long dramedies, which suggests SAG voters are more apt to give the prize to large casts when they’re also in large productions.
What does this statistic mean in terms of predicting the 2018 SAG Awards? “Orange is the New Black” once again boasts the biggest comedy cast with a record-setting 45 men and women nominated for the Netflix prison series. That’s up from 37 cast members in 2016, 34 in 2015, and 40 in 2014. Of this year’s other nominated ensembles, Netflix’s “Glow” consists of 18 cast members, followed by HBO’s “Veep” at 15, ABC...

On August 16, 2013, I finished the first draft of my second feature film, “Bite Me.” Today, on August 12, 2017, four years and 48 drafts later, I am riding the subway to our first day of production. But the story I am telling begins far earlier and, with any luck, will last far longer.
I have this memory that still guts me when I think about it today. I’m sitting in a movie theater as a middle-schooler and watching “The Princess Diaries.” I’m not sure if you remember that film, but at the beginning the central character played by a young Anne Hathaway is supposed to be a mega-nerd. To indicate the depths of her social pariah-hood, they made Anne wear glasses and frizzed her hair out a bit. But, if you’ve ever seen Anne Hathaway, you can probably imagine that, even in this state, she still, you know, looked like Anne Hathaway.

Can it possibly have been a whole year since we last shacked up in Litchfield Penitentiary, with its mattress-less bunks, garden shed full of secrets and Piper's panties-making empire? If you're like us, there's a good chance that you gulped down Season Three of Orange Is the New Black faster than you can say "Admiral Rodcocker." To say that Jenji Kohan's addictive prison comedy/drama is highly bingeable is a huge understatement; but the downside is that 12 months down the line, we're left with a hooch hangover and a...

In naming Spotlight one of the best ensembles of 2016, we said, “Tom McCarthy’s procedural moves with the precision of a fine timepiece. Rarely does one find a film where all is tune, from the pacing, writing, direction and acting. Highlighting the heroic work of the Boston Globe’s Spotlight team, the group is headed by Robby Robinson (Michael Keaton) who risks life long friendships to get the story right. His team includes Mike Rezendes (played by a compulsive Mark Ruffalo), Sacha Pfeiffer (Rachel McAdams) and Matt Caroll (Brian d’Arcy James). Encouraged by a Boston outsider, editor Marty Baron (Live Schreiber), the team undertakes a long-term investigation of abuses in the Catholic Church. In the mix are the lawyers on both sides, played by Stanley Tucci and Billy Crudup. Rightfully overshadowing that other journalism docudrama, James Vanderbilt’s incompetent Truth, the difference here amongst many things is perhaps access:...

A morning full of eye-opening surprises, the nominations for the 22nd Screen Actors Guild nominations were announced.
The standout nods were the inclusion of Straight Outta Compton, Beasts Of No Nation, Sarah Silverman, Amy Adams, Michael Shannon, Idris Elba and two for Dame Helen Mirren.
Not among the perceived hopefuls called were Sylvester Stallone, Charlotte Rampling, Michael Keaton, Mark Ruffalo, The Martian and The Hateful Eight.
Two nominating panels – one for television and one for film – each composed of 2,200 randomly selected union members from across the United States, chose this year’s nominees.
Some of the Sags choices were head-scratchers to be sure, but we’re thinking that the Oscar picks may be very different when The Academy announces their nominations next month live on Thursday, January 14, 2016, at 5:30 a.m. Pt at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.

Hollywood blacklist drama Trumbo has led the nominations for the 22nd Screen Actors Guild Awards with three nods for lead actor Bryan Cranston, supporting actress Helen Mirren and the ensemble cast. The Martian and The Hateful Eight were shut out.
Set in 1947, the film centres on Dalton Trumbo (Cranston), who was Hollywood’s top screenwriter, until he and other artists were jailed and blacklisted for their political beliefs.
Cranston will go up against Johnny Depp for Black Mass, Leonardo DiCaprio for The Revenant, Michael Fassbender for Steve Jobs and Eddie Redmayne for The Danish Girl.
Films that secured two nominations included Beasts Of No Nation, The Big Short, Carol, The Danish Girl, Room, Spotlight - whose outstanding cast nod will only strengthen its status as best picture Oscar frontrunner — and Steve Jobs.

The 22nd annual SAG Awards nominations were announced this morning and it's full of surprises! Sylvester Stallone, loved by critics and the National Board of Review for his performance in "Creed," was ignored. So was Kristen Stewart's supporting performance in "Clouds of Sils Maria." Matt Damon, who was so good and carried "The Martian" from start to finish, was also missing from the list.
But here's what I love about the SAG noms. First, Sarah Silverman's first dramatic performance in "I Smile Back" was embraced. And I'm also happy with the inclusion of "Room's" Brie Larson and the fantastic child actor, Jacob Tremblay. The endearing "Carol" also received noms for both Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara, and Saoirse Ronan's performance in the beautiful "Brooklyn" also received a nomination.
The big winner of the SAG noms is Bleecker Street's "Trumbo." Missing from earlier critics awards (see here...

Nominees for the 22nd Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards were unveiled this morning in Hollywood, with a fair amount of surprises to be had. Leading the pack is Trumbo, which picked up three nominations, then a large batch of films behind it with two each: Beasts of No Nation, The Big Short, Carol, The Danish Girl, Room, Spotlight, and Steve Jobs.
Perhaps most surprising is no mention of The Hateful Eight, which has one of the year’s best ensembles. Also of questionable note is the inclusion of Helen Mirren for Woman in Gold, a film all but forgotten (we suppose Harvey Weinstein’s campaigning indeed worked). There’s also the welcome nods to Michael Shannon in 99 Homes and Sarah Silverman in I Smile Back, as well as an ensemble nod to Straight Outta Compton. Check out the full list of nominees below ahead of the ceremony on Saturday, Jan.

It's only fitting in a season defined by its relentless desire to challenge the faith of its characters, for the third season finale of "Orange is the New Black" to present the inmates with an actual miracle. Obviously the hole in the fence has a very good reason for being there and there is also a very good reason the inmates are able to take advantage of it, but they make the narrative feat executed by Jenji Kohan and the other writers no less miraculous. Those reasons might even make the final scene more special when you stop to consider all of the events that had to transpire to make it possible. "Trust No Bitch" begins not long after the closing moments of the previous episode and lets Pennsatucky (Taryn Manning) and Big Boo (Lea DeLaria) come to terms with not fully exacting their revenge on Coates (James McMenamin). The...

Firmly over the half-way point into the third season of "Orange is the New Black" I can now confidently say I'm enjoying the unfocused approach it has taken. Last week, I mentioned I have a vested interest in the machinations of McC and the privatization of Litchfield and that still holds true this week even without a season arcing protagonist or antagonist. What "Fear and Other Smells" and "Where My Dreidel Atc" get back to is making me care about the inmates, just not the ones you'd expect. "Fear and Other Smells" focuses its flashback on Alex (Laura Prepon) and it covers very familiar ground. We all know by now that the drug dealer she worked for, and is now in constant fear of, is a dangerous man. We didn't really need to have him reiterate he has a lot of friends to be reminded Alex feels justified in her paranoia of every unfamiliar face.
