It’s a good year for Jeff Daniels at the Emmys. The veteran actor picked up two bids this year, one for Best Movie/Mini Actor for “The Looming Tower” and another for Best Movie/Mini Supporting Actor for “Godless.” In the latter, Daniels plays against type as a ruthless killer in the Old West. This is the first time he’s been in the Emmy race since his three consecutive Best Drama Actor nominations for “The Newsroom” (2013-2015), the first of which brought him a victory.
Daniels submitted for Emmy consideration the first episode of “Godless,” titled “An Incident at Creede.” In it, Roy Goode (Jack O’Connell) flees a violent outlaw gang led by his surrogate father, Frank Griffin (Daniels), who lost an arm from a gunshot wound delivered by the runaway. Roy ends up in the town of La Belle, which is inhabited almost entirely by women...

Godless marks Scott Frank’s first foray into the western genre. One could argue that his screenplay for Logan was western-adjacent, but Godless is a tried and true western complete with outlaws, gunfights, a town tragedy, a drifter and horses — an animal that executive producer Steven Soderbergh fears.
Created and written by Frank, the seven-part limited series — which was originally conceived as a feature film — reunites the Out of Sight writer with director Soderbergh and executive producer Casey Silver. Hitting the beats of a traditional western, Godless follows criminal Frank Griffin (Jeff Daniels) and his gang of menacing outlaws as they set out on a mission of revenge against Roy Goode (Jack O’Connell), a son-like protégé who betrayed them. While on the Run from Frank and his goons, Roy finds refuge with tough-as-nails Alice Fletcher (Michelle Dockery) in the isolated mining town of La Belle which is populated by mostly women.

When Carlos Rafael Rivera was an aspiring film composer and Scott Frank’s guitar teacher in 2005, the writer-director shared the Western script he was working on as a feature, and they discussed the score. “He read me a very dark scene with this evil Frank Griffin reading by the fireside, and we discussed the moment being built around C major,” he said. “And that was it.”
Later, after Rivera scored Frank’s 2014 feature “A Walk Among the Tombstones,” Rivera prepared to score that feature in the form of a seven-part Netflix mini-series, “Godless” — and decided the best score for the scene was none at all. “When that scene came up, and I was actually writing to picture, I wrote this music that had a Bernard Herrmann influence,” he said. “We ended up using no music because the performance was so good by Jeff Daniels.”

Musician Carlos Rafael Rivera first heard about “Godless” from Scott Frank in 2003, when the writer-director was a guitar student of his. “I had no idea I’d ever be working with him as a composer,” Rivera admits, since at that time he’d never written a movie score in his life. The two eventually collaborated on Frank’s film “A Walk Among the Tombstones” (2014), Rivera’s first credit as a composer, which was “an education.” Now he’s in the Emmy race for “Godless,” which is only his second score, and his first for TV. Watch our exclusive video interview with Rivera above.

If you’ve been looking for a new show to binge on Netflix, you’ve probably heard of Godless. Nestled between the releases of Stranger Things season 2, Marvel’s The Punisher, and the fourth season of Black Mirror, Godless seems the odd man out. Its premise is simple enough to ignore: Jeff Daniels plays a gang leader in the Old West hellbent on revenge. And as the series moves through its plot, there aren’t very many surprises. Instead, the show leans on strong performances of its cast. Michelle Dockery (Downton Abbey) plays a widowed rancher with a half-Native son. Jack O’Connell plays Roy Goode, an outlaw running from his life with a curious

If you're looking for a new show to binge-watch over the holiday break, we highly recommend Godless.
Set in the 1880s, the limited, seven-episode Netflix series puts an interesting twist on the Western genre, bringing the women to the forefront and detailing the hardships Americans faced at the time in an original way. Featuring breathtaking cinematography and truly fascinating characters like crazed outlaw Frank Griffin (Jeff Daniels) and his protege turned enemy, Roy Goode (Jack O’Connell), it's hard not to find yourself enamored in the show from beginning to end… even if you're not typically a fan of Westerns.
Godless highlights the town of La Belle, New Mexico, whose male population was almost completely wiped out by a mining disaster, leaving the ladies in charge to fend for themselves and their families. Newcomer Audrey Moore, who portrays Sarah Doyle, tells Et it was "a dream" to pay homage to the Western frontier women, and be a part...

Scott Frank first conceived of “Godless” because he loved the Western genre. In an interview with IndieWire, he said, “It’s the romance of living in that time, everything from the horses to the guns. There’s a very romantic notion, the kind of surviving through all of that and living out there in those days. A lot of people look back on that and wish we were sort of there again, in many ways.”
“It’s not just the negative aspects, like the violence and sort of the being caught out in the elements. All of that are certainly part of it, but it’s also just the quiet, giant, empty spaces that we don’t have anymore, or we certainly don’t experience every day anymore.”

Godless is a western that was released on November 22 on Netflix. In total, the limited series consists of seven episodes, which are centered around the bitter rivalry between the ex-outlaw Roy Goode and his one-time partner Frank Griffin. Said relationship is complicated by the fact that the former saw the latter as a paternal figure of sorts, having been raised by said individual when he was orphaned as a child. Such was the state of things until Roy became disgusted with what Griffin was doing, thus resulting in their current state of hostility. Besides the bitter rivalry between Roy

The Old West was a lawless place, where nothing was certain except for dust and hardship. On Netflix’s limited series “Godless,” outlaw Frank Griffin was certain about one thing though: how he wasn’t going to die.
“This ain’t my death,” he says over and over again like a mantra. Whether he has a noose around his neck or a shotgun pointed at his heart, he holds onto that unshakeable belief. “This ain’t my death. I’ve seen my death; this ain’t it.”
Jeff Daniels, who portrays Frank Griffin, spoke to IndieWire about that infamous line. “If it were a song, it’d be a good hook,” he said. “You preface that with, ‘Is this it? No, it’s not it. This ain’t my death. I just checked. Didn’t get the feeling that this was it.’ And that’s kind of all he goes on.

In the gun-slinging Old West of Netflix’s new six-part series Godless, the most piercing weapon a man could wield is the empty promise of religion. Settlers and profit-seekers might believe in manifest destiny, but in a land ruled by the ruthless, prayers will go unanswered. Absent a higher power, the townsfolk of Godless live in fear of a figure who uses blunt intimidation to his advantage. And there’s no one more up for the task than Jeff Daniels, who plays a gruff, one-armed madman named Frank Griffin.

All in all, “Godless” is a relatively straightforward western — and proud of it. Scott Frank’s limited series wears its emotions on its dirty, tattered sleeve, and the nearly feature-length finale wraps things up in a way that’s satisfying in the specifics more so than any big surprises.
Genre staples are met almost as though they’re being checked off a list. There’s a betrayal. There’s a massacre outside of town. There’s a massive shootout in town. There’s a quickdraw duel between good and evil. There are deaths. There are goodbyes. There’s hope.
In comforting fashion, Frank’s western abides by the formulas and format of the classics and draws to mind the great miniseries of yesteryear (namely, “Lonesome Dove”). But what elevates “Godless” beyond imitation are its subtle yet strong modern touches.

Snakes, a bloody violin, and a whole lot of dust are just some of the telling images found in the “Godless” opening titles. The highly anticipated Netflix series, which stars an alarmingly rugged Jeff Daniels, is set to premiere on Wednesday, November 22, and the gorgeous title sequence forces its Western themes to shine, as “Godless” breaks down the deeply harmful consequences of war.
Composer Carlos Rafael Rivera layered a silky yet haunting string melody over the gritty images created by Method Studios, giving the Netflix drama a flair reminiscent of its premium channel competitors. An obscene amount of gun violence is expected and is called upon throughout the minute-long introduction, along with pictures of death, tough women, and political rivalry. The sequence was executive produced by Angela Lupo and produced by Emily Schaeberle, with Jonn Likens serving as creative director.

Many who watch Merritt Wever impatiently pull a gun on an old man who yells at her nephew one too many times — meaning, he yells at the kid once — will wish the series around her had an equally expeditious attitude. Wever’s character, Mary Agnes, is done finding bliss in the “child bearing and caregiving” ways of her fellow women. She dresses as she pleases, seeing no practical purpose for a corset. She dates who she wants to date — a woman — and generally does what she wants to do; mainly, outsmarting, outdrawing, and out-performing most men who dare dismiss her because she’s not ladylike enough.
In short, she’s not one for delayed gratification, hiding behind custom, or wasting time in general, so when a loudmouthed man raises his voice to the wrong child at the wrong time, out comes her gun. And within seconds, Mary Agnes gets what she wants.

Is it us, or does Netflix seem to be making a concerted bid to straight-up own November? It's launching a pair of expensive-looking period-set miniseries, a long-anticipated Marvel spin-off, a sophomore run for one of the best TV cult comedies of the past 10 years and their big-league awards contender film of the year. It's not often I use the words "Western" and "awesome" in a sentence together, but that's mostly because I feel as though the genre is played out. That appears to be changing though, as Netflix has a new limited series by the name of Godless that looks to be a twist on the traditional Western plotlines:

Netflix has released a stunning first trailer for their upcoming seven-part western series Godless. The series comes from producer Steven Soderbergh (Ocean's Eleven, Logan Lucky) and director Scott Frank (A Walk Among the Tombstones). It also has a fantastic cast that includes Jack O’Connell, Michelle Dockery, and Jeff Daniels.
The trailer offers up a collection of intriguing visuals as a narrator says:
"Tis a fearful thing to love what death can touch. The love, the hope, the dream, to be, to lose. For your life is lived in me. To remember this brings painful joy. Tis a human thing to love what death has touched."
As far as the story goes, the only other thing we have to go off of is this synopsis:
Frank Griffin, an outlaw terrorizing the 1880s American West, hunts down Roy Goode, his partner turned enemy. Roy hides out at a ranch as Frank's...

The first Godless trailer showcases Michelle Dockery and Jack O’Connell in a Western series produced by Steven Soderbergh...
Netflix's new offering Godless looks to put an intriguing twist on the conventional concept of the Western.
With Steven Soderbergh, indie darling and esteemed big screen blockbuster director of the Ocean’s Eleven film franchise, attached as an executive producer to the 7-episode limited series created by Scott Frank, look for some twists and turns not traditionally found in the arid, dusty, tumbleweed-strewn genre.

The trailer focuses on the trials and tribulations of an outlaw, named Roy Goode (Jack O’Connell). With the events of the series taking place in the 1880s American West, we see intermittent Kung-Fu-esque flashbacks to Roy’s upbringing, where he was raised by anti-hero outlaw Frank Griffin (Jeff Daniels) - and with whom he eventually becomes partners in crime.

Welcome to no man’s land — literally. Netflix’s new seven-part limited series, starring Jack O’Connell, Michelle Dockery and Jeff Daniels, follows outlaw Frank Griffin as he hunts down Roy Goode, his partner-turned-enemy in the 1880s American West. The chase winds them up in La Belle, New Mexico, a town made up entirely of women. The teaser trailer features a lot of wide open spaces you’d expect from a Western, but those beautiful shots are juxtaposed with more disturbing images, like a baby playing with a rattlesnake and a train crash. It didn’t take long, but just two years after the untimely demise of “The Knick,” Steven Soderbergh has partnered with director Scott Frank for “Godless,” a new Netflix limited series that’s set to take over your family’s Thanksgiving weekend.
“Godless” stars Jeff Daniels as Frank Griffin, a criminal who’s seeking revenge on Roy Goode (Jack O’Connell), a young ex-partner who deserted Griffin’s posse. Both of them converge on the women-run frontier town of La Belle, New Mexico, where Alice Fletcher (Michelle Dockery) gives Roy protection from Griffin’s approaching hoards. (Presumably, Griffin is an outlaw and if he tells you any different, you punch him in the face.)

On the TNT series Good Behavior, which returns with season two on Oct. 15, Michelle Dockery -- best known for playing the coolly aristocratic Lady Mary Crawley on Downton Abbey -- returns as Letty Raines, an American con artist sprung from prison with the intent of applying her relatively limited resources, chief among them her wits, to a fresh start.
It’s a 180-degree turn from her Downton character, says Dockery, who in fact was offered the part just as Downton was coming to an end in 2015. “But what I love about Letty and Mary is that they’re both complex, deeply flawed women,” she says.
And like Lady Mary, who thawed substantially over six seasons, Letty is evolving. In this new season, having regained custody of her young son, Jacob (played by Nyles Steele), Letty aims to establish at least a semblance of domestic stability with her hired-assassin lover, Javier (Juan Diego Botto).
But shunning crime and settling...

He may have announced his retirement – albeit a temporary one – from filmmaking, but Academy Award winner Steven Soderbergh has not been resting on his laurels. Having delivered the critically acclaimed TV movie Behind The Candelabra, and the equally well-received TV series The Knick, The Girlfriend Experience, and Red Oaks, Soderbergh has turned his attentions to Netflix, where he will stream his latest producing project, Godless.
Godless is a limited series of just six episodes, and is written and directed by Scott Frank (The Wolverine, A Walk Among The Tombstones). I'm very excited to see the upcoming Netflix western show Godless, which hails from exec producer Steven Soderbergh and producer/writer/director Scott Frank (Out of Sight, Minority Report, The Wolverine, The Lookout) and now THR has some confirmation of new cast members for us.
Jeff Daniels has been confirmed to play the show's villain, an outlaw named Frank Griffin who's ravaging the west as he and his gang hunt down his protege-turned-nemesis Roy Goode (Jack O'Connell from Unbroken). Roy takes shelter at a ranch outside of La Belle, New Mexico, a town made up exclusively of women after all of the men died in a mining accident. Daniels was recently rumored alongside Scoot McNairy, but the latter hasn't been confirmed for a role (yet).
There are a few other casting bits, too. Merritt Wever ([pictured] Nurse Jackie, The Walking Dead) will play Mary Agnes, the "brash widow" of the town's late mayor, while Game of Thrones alum Thomas Brodie-Sangster ([pictured] who played greenseer Jojen Reed) will play Whitey Winn, the town deputy: "Devoted to both books and the sheriff and afraid of no one, but still a boy more than a man, he has a lot to learn." Jeremy Bobb (The Knick) rounds out this batch of casting as A.T. Grigg, "the editor of the Santa Fe Dailey Review who has been obsessed for years with writing about the Griffin Gang."
After seeing Daniels as principled news anchor Will McAvoy on The Newsroom, I'm looking forward to watching him terrorize the Old West in this show.

Slowly but surely, casting is really beginning to heat up on Godless, the all-new Western in the works as a Netflix limited series.
Headed up by Steven Soderbergh and Scott Frank – the pair last collaborated on Out of Sight – we brought you the news two weeks ago that up-and-comer Jack O’Connell had closed a deal to star, and now Deadline is reporting that Jeff Daniels and Scoot McNairy of Batman V Superman have their eyes set on the Wild West.
No mention of which roles Daniels and McNairy are in contention for – we assume one or the other will step into the dusty shoes of Frank Griffin – but it’s understood that should both stars put pen to paper, they’ll be bound for a remote New Mexico mining town in the 1800s.

Before he was clad in opulent armor for 300: Rise of an Empire, few moviegoers would have recognized the name Jack O’Connell on any given casting docket. That all changed thanks to a starring role in Angelina Jolie’s wartime drama Unbroken, and since then, the English actor has been snapping up roles left, right and center.
Adding another feather to that proverbial cap today, The Hollywood Reporter brings word that O’Connell has been tapped for Godless, Steven Soderbergh’s new Western series that recently found a home at Netflix. THR confirms that O’Connell will headline the series as Roy Goode, an “injured outlaw on the run from his former boss.” It’s certainly a major project for O’Connell to be involved in, particularly considering that the actor’s TV credits up until now have only included Skins and The Runaway.
