Who’d have thought the 26th annual Art Directors Guild Awards would be such a good party?
Community alum and host Yvette Nicole Brown kicked things off with great energy and a few genuinely funny jokes. There followed two genuinely engaging acceptance speeches from Ethan Tobman and François Audouy and then a genuinely emotional — and funny — introduction from Kevin Costner for his longtime collaborator, production designer Ida Ransom, who received the Lifetime Achievement Award.
“I’m so impressed how many production designers are not freaked out by talking up here,” said a visibly nervous Costner. “It’s freaking me out.”
The guild also awarded Lifetime Achievement Awards to Donna Cline, Anne Harris and Denise & Michael Okuda.

Disney’s Colombian-based animated musical “Encanto” is gaining momentum at just the right time: After winning the Golden Globe for animated feature, it led the Ves animation-related VFX nominations January 18 with six (including the modeling of the magical Casa Madrigal). Indeed, the design and animation of the family’s Casita was a standout both for its narrative importance and technical complexity.
Gifted to the family via a magical candle, the enchanted and colorful house functions as an important character (director Byron Howard likens it to the family dog), providing an atmosphere of joy, but also signaling darker undercurrents of unhappiness that eventually rip the house apart as the family loses its magical powers. That is, until Mirabel (Stephanie Beatriz) — the only ungifted member — summons the strength to unify the family and rebuild the house.

The Visual Effects Society unveiled nominations Tuesday for its 20th annual Ves Awards, with Warner Bros’ Dune and Disney’s animated Encanto leading all nominees with six apiece, followed by the Disney+ Marvel series Loki which has four noms to lead all broadcast series.
The group, celebrating its 25th anniversary, recognizes the year’s best in outstanding visual effects artistry and innovation across film, animation, television, commercials and video games. With the Omicron variant surging, the Ves Awards ceremony does not have a date or format yet; those decisions are still to be made and tickets are not yet up for sale.

Disney’s upcoming animated film “Encanto” will be featured in a special virtual presentation on Friday, Oct. 22, during the View Conference 2021. The panel, which is free to registrants like the rest of the conference, will begin at noon Pt.
On hand to give viewers a behind-the-scenes look at the film’s vibrant visuals will be co-director Byron Howard, production designer Ian Gooding and assistant production designer Lorelay Bové.

This year’s animated Oscar contenders offer brave new worlds: a unique mammal metropolis (“Zootopia”), a fantasy Japan (“Kubo and the Two Strings”), an untapped Polynesian paradise (“Moana”), a fuzzy fiber art environment (“Trolls”) and a tactile hybrid between storybook fantasy and reality (“The Little Prince”).
“Zootopia”
Disney’s design team built an imaginatively diverse animal world where predator and prey co-exist comprised of five boroughs: Savanna Central (downtown), Tundratown, Rain Forest District, Sahara Square and Bunnyburrow. But what’s unique about Zootopia is that it’s a global city built by animals for animals.
As a result, there are multipurpose public buildings where all animals can interact with each other along with others specifically designed for certain mammals. However, human architecture is evident throughout while animal patterns are part of the design DNA. They experimented with different layouts for the various districts in a Disneyland-like pattern, which required both logistical and dramatic logic.

For long-time Disney directors John Musker and Ron Clements (“The Princess and the Frog,” “Aladdin,” “The Little Mermaid”), it was an opportunity to explore CG for the first time while pushing the princess legacy in a new direction: following “Tangled” and “Frozen” with a film with contemporary appeal.
The free-spirited, teenage Moana (Auli’i Cravalho) possesses strong navigational skills and is determined to sail out on a dangerous mission to save her island and eradicate its isolation. She’s also a capable warrior, taking on a ship full of tiny coconut pirates called Kakakora.

I’m surprised it took this long to come up with a concept like Wreck-it Ralph, the hilarious, arcade-game-hopping journey from Disney which was something of a Toy Story for a generation weaned on Nintendo and Sega. Wreck-it Ralph was a lot of fun (much more so than Brave which took home the Oscar last week). Wamg’s Jim Batts gave the film 4 ½ stars (read his review Here)

Now Wreck-it Ralph has been released on Blu-ray and, unsurprisingly, it looks spectacular. Sharpness consistently appears immaculate on the Br disc. Even the widest shots of the “Sugar Rush” racers zooming around the track demonstrated excellent clarity, as every aspect of Wreck-it Ralph looked detailed and distinctive. No issues with jagged edges or shimmering materialized, and I saw no edge haloes or processing concerns. Of course, print flaws weren’t a factor, as they stayed away from this unblemished presentation.

Leave it to Disney to come up with a way to update Robert Louis Stevenson's classic tale Treasure Island into a science fiction epic. The studio that brought you the unforgettable live-action film version returned to the source material once again with the idea of taking the adventure into deep space and to other worlds. Unfortunately, moviegoers weren't interested in Treasure Planet when it came out in 2002. The film underperformed at the box office but was still nominated for a 2002 Academy Award in the category of Best Animated Feature.

First I went to The Book of Eli: From Script to Screen panel with screenwriter Gary Whitta. He talked about his writing process and the development of the film. Really informative stuff. He also mentioned he's writing Warcraft and Akira! Next is the The Art of The Princess and the Frog panel with directors Ron Clements and John Musker (The Little Mermaid, Aladdin), art director Ian Gooding, supervising animator Eric Goldberg, and effects supervisor Marlon West. They show a lot of development photos including their trip to New Orleans. Cool artwork and pencil tests. Being in the same room as those guys was crazy. Legends of animation. Then it's time for the famous Kevin Smith Q&A. He brings down the house. So hilarious.

The first traditionally animated feature film from Disney since 2002's Home on the Range (and more importantly to little girls, the first to feature a new Disney princess since 1998's Mulan), The Princess and the Frog is a well crafted return to this cherished form of animation. While the film has its flaws and isn't playing on the same level of Beauty and the Beast or Sleeping Beauty, it's a step above more recent Disney 'toons like Hercules or Tarzan.
Co-directed and written by Ron Clements and John Musker, the same duo behind the better realized The Little Mermaid and the lesser Treasure Planet, you can tell that more careful consideration of creative planning went into Princess and the Frog than the animated Disney films from the latter half of the 1990s and early 2000s. While the Disney think tank was careful to not venture too far from the ingredients...

Last year the Annie Awards caused quite a stir when Kung Fu Panda swept Wall-e [1] in every category. Of course, Wall-e still went on to win the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, but it's interesting to note that this year, with so many great animated movies to choose from, the Annies decided to go back and honour Pixar's Up with their top prize. Needless to say, Up is now a heavy favourite at the Oscars (if it wasn't already), but how did the other categories shake down for the Annie Awards? Pete Docter also received the award for Directing, but it was The Princess and the Frog and Coraline that split many of the other categories. Personally I was just pleased to see Wes Anderson and Noah Baumbach pick up the Writing award for Fantastic Mr. Fox. After the jump, you can see all of the feature film categories...

Following yesterday's Independent Spirit Award Nominations [1], The Annie Awards have also revealed their full list of nominees for this year. This is the annual award ceremony for the International Animated Film Association, celebrating animation in all of its forms. Sometimes these awards can help predict what movie will win the Best Animated Feature at the Oscars, although it's not always entirely reliable (last year Kung Fu Panda swept Wall-e [2] in every category). As we discussed on this week's podcast [3], it's shaping up to be a pretty tight race for Best Animated Feature this year, and if the Annies are any indication, it looks like Henry Selick's Coraline may have the edge. It was nominated for a total of 10 Annie Awards, including Best Animated Feature, Character Design, Voice Acting, and Music. The nominees for the 2010 Annie Awards were also announced today and Focus Features' Coraline topped the list of feature nominees with 10 with Pixar's Up following with 9 and Disney's Princess and the Frog scoring 8. All three films were included in the running for Best Animated feature along with Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, The Secret of Kells and Fantastic Mr. Fox.
Last year the Annie Awards came under some scrutiny as Kung Fu Panda blanked the soon-to-be Oscar winner Wall-e. The reason for the uproar being DreamWorks was one of the org's top sponsors (which they still are). This year Monsters vs. Aliens is the only DreamWorks Animated feature making any noise (4 nominations), but it looks like Sony Pictures Animation has bumped up their contributions to become a "Gold Sponsor". Will there again be uproar if Pixar's Up doesn't walk away with the top prizes or Disney's The Princess and the Frog.
