Exclusive: Kevin Smith is reuniting with The Green Hornet in a new animated series.
The Clerks filmmaker has teamed up with kids producer WildBrain to develop a new series based on the classic superhero franchise.
Smith has long been a fan of the Green HorneT; in 2004, he was hired to write a feature film screenplay based on the character for Miramax. That project never materialized on screen – it was subsequently written by and starred Seth Rogen, directed by Michael Gondry and released in 2011.
However, the Mallrats filmmaker did turn his screenplay into a comic book series. He wrote the first four issue story arc of the series, which was published by Dynamite Entertainment in 2010.
Smith and WildBrain are developing the new animated series to target a family audience. The series will be set in contemporary times, following the adventures of a re-imagined Green Hornet and Kato – now the grown son...

Amasia Entertainment has secured the feature film rights to The Green Hornet after a competitive bidding situation for the much-traveled property that began in 1936 as a radio adventure serial and enjoyed a revival in 2011 with the release of the Columbia Pictures feature film starring Seth Rogen.
Amasia co-founders Michael Helfant and Bradley Gallo announced the acquisition of rights to a masked-man brand that has also made previous stops at Universal Pictures, Dimension Films, Miramax, and Paramount Pictures.
The Green Hornet and his valet/sidekick, Kato, were introduced on Detroit radio station Wxyz four years before the DC Comics debut of the Dynamic Duo of Batman and Robin the Boy Wonder. The Green Hornet is a feared underworld figure but in reputation only — the mystery man is actually an undercover crimefighter who also crusades for justice with his day job as newspaper publisher Britt Reid.

Sam Mendes’ World War I epic 1917 scored its second major guild victory of the awards season Saturday at the 72nd annual DGA Awards, cementing his spot as an Oscar Best Picture frontrunner in Director and Best Picture by winning the marquee feature film award.
The victory in a category that included four of this year’s five Oscar Directing nominees — Bong Joon-Ho for Neon’s Parasite, Quentin Tarantino for Sony’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and Martin Scorsese for Netflix’s The Irishman — came after the Universal film produced and financed by Amblin Partners and New Republic scored the top prize at the PGA Awards a week ago.
‘I want to tell a quick story I’ve never told before,” Mendes, who won this award in 1999 for American Beauty, said onstage at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in downtown Los Angeles. “My grandfather inspired this film, and he made me...

The Directors Guild of America has nominated Bong Joon Ho for “Parasite,” Sam Mendes for “1917,” Martin Scorsese for “The Irishman,” Quentin Tarantino for “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” and Taika Waititi for “Jojo Rabbit.”
The DGAs are seen as a stepping stone to the Oscars, where the last six best director winners also went home with an Academy Award. Last year, “Roma” filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón scored the feature film directing award, beating out Bradley Cooper for “A Star Is Born,” Spike Lee for “BlacKkKlansman,” Adam McKay for “Vice,” and Peter Farrelly for “Green Book.”
Three female filmmakers — Mati Diop for “Atlantics,” Alma Ha’rel for “Honey Boy” and Melina Matsoukas for “Queen & Slim” — were recognized by the Directors Guild in the first-time feature film award category differing from the Golden Globe Awards and the BAFTA Awards, which both failed to nominate female directors this year.

Hot on the heels of the Producers Guild announcing today (as well as BAFTA last night), the Directors Guild of America has followed. The DGA, along with the aforementioned PGA, combine to be reliable Oscar predictors, so this morning/afternoon is proving to be a vital one, especially as Academy Award voting closes tonight. So, you should be paying close attention to these Guilds. DGA is a strong indicator of Best Director, that goes without saying. Highlighting the lineup for the DGA were the expected names in the main category, such as Bong Joon Ho for Parasite, Sam Mendes for 1917, Martin Scorsese for The Irishman, and Quentin Tarantino for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. The final slot was the one everyone had their eye on, and the Guild went for a surprise. The Directors Guild of America’s feature-film nominations contain a lineup of acknowledged masters including Martin Scorsese for “The Irishman,” Quentin Tarantino for “Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood,” Sam Mendes for “1917” and Korean auteur Bong Joon Ho for “Parasite.”
Taika Waititi may not have been mentioned in their company when he was best known for making comedies and horror flicks like “What We Do in the Shadows” and “Hunt for the Wilderpeople,” but he joined the ranks of those other directors on Tuesday morning when the Directors Guild nominated him for “Jojo Rabbit.”
But the slate of nominees also means that the DGA will face some of the same questions that were aimed at the Hollywood Foreign Press Association when it nominated an all-male slate of directors for the Golden Globe.

Some of the best moments on the The Voice come when the producers force us to play along with the coaches and judge solely on the voice. Right out of the gate, tonight’s episode took that turn when Sarah Golden took on Lady Gaga’s “You And I,” winning over Blake Shelton and Cee-lo. In the discussion that followed, we learned that Golden is a folk singer… so apparently none of the songs that the artists are allowed to sing during auditions were folk. But based on the song that she was able to attack, it seems that choosing Cee Lo was a smarter choice since he might have more to offer her when experimenting with various genres.
Two more artists joined Team Cee Lo this week, giving Golden some steep competition. 28 year old former model, Erin Martin wins the award for most unique voice of the night. Levine...

"The Voice" got down to business in the third round of blind auditions Monday night, and judge Adam Levine came out of the episode the true winner, adding four strong new players to his team. Christina Aguilera, who in the first two eps snagged some of the best vocalists so far in the competition, wasn't so lucky, scoring only two new team members. Blake Shelton and Cee Lo Green each nabbed three.
Teams Xtina, Blake and Cee Lo are now half-filled with six members, while the Maroon 5 frontman's team is up to seven.
Team Christina
It took nearly half the episode, but Christina finally found a team member in Geoff McBride, a 51-year-old father of four from Florida who has worn sunglasses since childhood after being injured while kickboxing.

We've come to the point in my Voice recaps where I admit that I'm tone-deaf. So tone-deaf. Almost aggressively tone-deaf. When Christina Aguilera gargles up a compliment like, "It was really the tone in your voice I was attracted to," I literally believe she's talking about nothing. (She's usually talking about nothing, which makes it confusing.) She's actually talking about something I can't hear, but I believe that gives me an advantage over her: I can tell you what the average, below-average American hears in these contenders. We'll call that a gift.
Anyway, The Voice breezed through more than a dozen auditioners last night. It was so hard to like many of them. Let's give 'em all letter grades and shoot this two-hour fiasco off a cliff.

It was a good night for Adam Levine on The Voice. Not only did the Maroon 5er gather four new team members, and remind us all that he won last year's competition yet again, but he proved that he is easily the best at stating his case to the contestants.
