After a gap of a few years and a messy-yet-secretive legal dispute between creators Doug Naylor and Rob Grant, Red Dwarf is rumoured to be back on its way to our screens once again with three new episodes. Which poses the question – how many more returns can it make before it finally draws to a close? How will the TV series that started with a pilot episode called “The End” end?
Red Dwarf is unlike any other science fiction franchise of comparable longevity. It is not like Stars Trek or Wars, an expansive universe full of side characters and unexplored domains for spin-offs to inhabit. Nor is it the adventure of a single character whose face changes on a semi-regular basis.
As part of the ongoing mysterious feud settlement, Rob Grant is launching Red Dwarf: Titan, which is set to give us a prequel/alternate universe take on Lister and Rimmer.

Red Dwarf is returning to television next year for three new episodes. Here are the details of what’s coming up.
According to British Comedy Guide, cult sci-fi comedy show Red Dwarf, which has been going for an incredible 36 years and counting, will return for three half-hour episodes. It’s said these will cover a single story. Filming is set to begin in October and it will be broadcast next year, although it is unclear exactly which channel it will be on. Charles, Barrie, John-Jules and Llewellyn will reprise their roles.
Writers Rob Grant and Doug Naylor reconciled last year, releasing a statement that confirmed that while they had put their differences behind them, they would not be writing together. Each writer will work on separate iterations of the show, with Naylor continuing to write the television series, while Grant is writing a prequel series with 2point4Children writer Andrew Marshall.

Bleachers stopped by The Tonight Show to showcase their recent single, “Modern Girl.” The band, led by Jack Antonoff, gave an energetic performance of the track complete with horns. The song and its visuals pay tribute to Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, as is on display in the clip.
Antonoff also sat down with host Jimmy Fallon to discuss producing music for Taylor Swift, including her hit “Cruel Summer,” and his wedding to actress Margaret Qualley. During the interview, Antonoff and Fallon wrote an impromptu song, proving once...

Maple Syrup Massacre is an editorial series where Joe Lipsett dissects the themes, conventions and contributions of new and classic Canadian horror films. Spoilers follow…
Fake Blood is a delicious curiousity: it’s a documentary about director Rob Grant and his frequent collaborator Mike Kovac, who also co-writes, exploring their responsibility in depicting cinematic violence.
Or at least that’s how it starts.
Over time the film slowly morphs into something different. As the two men embark on a mission to “experience” the kinds of violence depicted in their low budget films, they slowly become immersed in a narrative of their own making involving a “real-life” murderer named “John.”
Grant is well known in indie horror circles. In addition to directing under-the-radar gem Harpoon, he’s the editor of films like Knuckleball and this year’s Influencer.

Robert Grant, Lana Del Rey’s father, has made a name for himself and even has his own fans who love to call him one nickname in particular — Nepo Daddy.
The entrepreneur and musician’s piano skills have “gone from kind of a fun side project to a real job” as Grant recently released his debut album, Lost At Sea, which features Lana on two tracks. In a new interview with Et Canada, Grant, 69, talks about how he’s embraced being called Nepo Daddy and how he decided to put music into the world after playing with his daughter.
“That Nepo Daddy thing started popping up in social media comments, and I saw it about five months ago,” he told Morgan Hoffman of when he first heard the nickname. “And right away, you know, being an old ad guy, I thought, ‘Aha! That’s a pretty catchy phrase. In fact,...

Lana Del Rey’s new album Did you know that there’s a tunnel under Ocean Blvd is out now via Interscope and Polydor Records. Stream it below
First announced last December, the album is Del Rey’s ninth full-length offering, and first since she dropped two records in 2021, Chemtrails Over the Country Club and Blue Banisters. Returning to a sound and vibe more akin to her earlier work — particularly 2019’s Norman Fucking Rockwell! — Did you know that there’s a tunnel under Ocean Blvd is another vehicle for the 37-year-old’s signature neo-Americana storytelling.
Produced by Jack Antonoff alongside Mike Hermosa, Drew Erickson, Zach Dawes, and Benji, the album features more collaborations than a typical Del Rey release. Antonoff’s band Bleachers, Father John Misty, Jon Batiste, Tommy Genesis, and celebrity pastor Judah Smith all make appearances.
In her review, Consequence’s Mary Siroky writes: “Ultimately, for another sonically cohesive record,...

Lana Del Rey has shared “The Grants,” the latest single from her upcoming ninth studio album, Did You Know That There’s a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd.
On the track, Del Rey (born Elizabeth Grant) appears to pay tribute to the memory of her late uncle David Grant, who died in 2016 while climbing the Rocky Mountains. “I’m gonna take mine of you with me,” Del Rey sings. “Like ‘Rocky Mountain High’/ The way John Denver sings.”
“The Grants” was co-written with Mike Hermosa and features backing vocals from singers Melodye Perry, Pattie Howard, and Shikena Jones, who all appeared in the 2013 music documentary 20 Feet from Stardom.
Listen to Lana Del Rey’s new song “The Grants” below.
The single follows the album’s title track and the seven-minute epic “A&w,” the latter of which we named Song of the Week. Did You Know That There’s a Tunnel...

Last week, seemingly out of nowhere, the usually relatively quiet Red Dwarf Twitter account announced this:

The statement read:
“Rob Grant and Doug Naylor are delighted to announce that the ongoing dispute over the Red Dwarf rights has been resolved.
Moving onwards and upwards, Rob and Doug hope to launch separate iterations of Red Dwarf across various media, working again with the cast and other valued partners, and wish each other the very best.
Smoke a kipper, Red Dwarf will be back for breakfast!!” (sic)
This came as a bit of a bolt from the blue, particularly among anyone who hadn’t been closely following the show since its last special, ‘The Promised Land’, in 2020.

It’s winter and a boy is unintentionally home alone, but what follows is more in the realm of mortal peril than wacky hijinks in “Knuckleball.” This admirably lean thriller, in which a 12-year-old dumped at grandpa’s during his parents’ vacation ends up fighting for life, doesn’t necessarily hold up to close scrutiny in terms of credibility. Yet while you’re watching, helmer Michael Peterson effectively earns suspension of disbelief with stark atmospherics, solid performances and a persuasive escalation of panic. The Canadian feature is opening on three U.S. screens simultaneous with its digital-formats release.

Two Canadians with a sideline in schlock-horror movies ponder the ethics of peddling cinematic violence in Fake Blood, a low-fi film claiming to be a documentary account of that self-reflection. If what they show us all actually happened, Fake Blood would be something of a minor doc discovery, in which truth takes a surprising and on-topic turn. But if director Rob Grant and collaborator Mike Kovac actually had this adventure, they'd surely be crowing about it, not having their publicists refuse to confirm or deny the truth of the pic's third-act events. Judged as a fiction built on a kernel...

Twenty seven years, umpteen light years, several different realities and a curry monster later, and Red Dwarf is now officially the second longest running sci-fi series of all time (it'd be first if it weren't for that pesky Doctor).
But though the Dwarf is still with us, fans have been left adrift in space for the time being – it's been three years since the show's triumphant return to form with 2012's Series X, and it'll likely be another year before series 11 hits Dave.
Making it, therefore, as good a time as any for Digital Spy to decide definitely how those ten series stack up against each other, and rank them from truly worst to glorious best. Disagree? Let us know below...

A Red Dwarf movie was announced in 2000, and news on it would follow for years afterwards. So: what happened?
When the eighth series of Red Dwarf left our screens in 1999, with the titular (nanobotically-reconstituted) mining vessel being devoured by a highly corrosive micro-organism, it left us with the words “The End” emblazoned over the image, before being replaced by “The Smeg It Is.”
And then, nothing.
It was ten years before the boys from the Dwarf were back on our screens, albeit for a three-episode run on Dave. But that lost decade was not spent watching re-runs of The Flintstones, nor was everyone trapped in a completely immersive video game indistinguishable from reality. Most of it involved co-creator Doug Naylor (his comedy partner Rob Grant left the show after season six), trying to get a movie off the ground.
This had not been the plan. But with the BBC rejecting...

Remember Kinvig, Clone, Not With A Bang? These are the UK sci-fi sitcoms you’re unlikely to see on comedy best-of lists…
With E4 sci-fi comedy commissions, Tripped and Aliens, and in-development Channel 4 projects, Space Ark and Graham Linehan/Adam Buxton collaboration The Cloud, in the works, a new crop of sci-fi sitcom could be making its way to UK TV.
Making funny sci-fi on a small-screen budget is tough enough without the additional pressure of having to attract viewers more traditionally down-to-earth in their sitcom tastes. Sci-fi sets and effects can be seen as prohibitively expensive by comedy commissioners (which is perhaps why the best UK sci-fi sitcoms of recent years has been on BBC Radio), and the genre’s niche status doesn’t scream mainstream hit. Over the years, one or two stand-outs have managed to straddle the sci-fi and comedy TV worlds, but plenty more have stumbled in the attempt.

Opening Night: The fun kicks off on the 25th at 7:30 p.m. with the exciting new flick from the always amazing Astron-6 collective, The Editor, an homage to the brutal Giallo movies of the ’70s and ’80s directed by Adam Brooks and Matthew Kennedy. Closing Night: Goodnight Mommy the debut feature film by Severin Fiala and Veronika Franz, will screen at 8:30 p.m. on the 29th and is a nightmarish vision of familial dread when twin brothers believe their cosmetically altered mother is literally not the woman she used to be.

Doctor Who, Star Trek and more: what happened when sci-fi, horror & fantasy heroes have popped up on British daytime TV over the years…
Pre-YouTube, fandom was a hard-earned thing. It took research, dedication and enough patience to hover over the family video player’s ‘record’ button for an entire episode of TV-am in anticipation of six minutes with Sylvester McCoy. Six minutes in which the Seventh Doctor would be polled if he was a cat or dog person and then asked to taste a lemon roulade.
Scarcity bred desire in those days, so we took what we could get from our heroes of yore, even if that meant watching Hammer Horror legend Ingrid Pitt make a chocolate mousse, or the aforementioned McCoy attempt to answer fan questions above the hubbub of a Nottingham swimming pool complex. The collision of geek icons and UK daytime magazine shows was sometimes illuminating, sometimes excruciating,...

This year’s award goes to Morten Tyldum for The Imitation Game. The award offers a $15,000 cash prize and custom award, sponsored by Grolsch.
Benedict Cumberbatch stars as Alan Turing, the genius British mathematician, logician, cryptologist and computer scientist who led the charge to crack the German Enigma Code that helped the Allies win WWII. The Toronto International Film Festival gave its top prize Sunday to The Imitation Game, starring Benedict Cumberbatch and distributed by The Weinstein Company. The announcement brings the huge festival to a close after hundreds of film screenings over 10 days. The Imitation Game, a biopic about gay computer pioneer and code-breaker Alan Turing, won the Grolsch People’s Choice Winner, Aka, the audience award for favorite feature-length film shown.
The acclaimed film, which had its World Premiere at Telluride over Labor Day weekend and its unveiling at Tiff on Tuesday, also stars Keira Knightley and was directed by Norwegian helmer Morten Tyldum.
Unlike other festivals that throw their weight behind juried prizes, Tiff prides itself on the fact that their most important honor is chosen by actual moviegoers (although they do hand out some juried awards in other categories).
At the beginning of each film, the audience is reminded that they can vote.

A night of fun ends badly for a trio of bullied high school kids but not in the way you might think ... Rob Grant's Toronto International Film Festival selected short does what all good speculative fiction should do: Taking a premise that feels familiar on the surface and twisting it into a surprising direction to force the audience to ask uncomfortable questions. And it looks damn good while doing it.Three bullied high school seniors, Marshall, Leonard, and Dermot, are chased from winter formal and end up in a horrific car accident. In the aftermath, Marshall and Leonard discover they have the ability to 'reappear' completely healed after they die, while Dermot survives the accident but is paralyzed. Marshall tries to convince Leonard that they...

The luxurious banquet hall in Toronto’s Royal York hotel was electric with excitement as Tiff senior programmers including Steve Gravestock and Agata Smoluch Del Sorbo announced the robust lineup of Canadian films (several world preems) at this year’s Tiff plus the 40+ short titles (out of an astounding 840 short films — an increase of over 200 titles from last year) that will screen at the prestigious festival. With features populating almost every section at the fest, among the headliner items from English Canada, Cairo Time‘s Ruba Nadda returns to the fest with October Gale, while also world preeming is Bang Bang Baby — Jeffrey St. Jules marks his feature film debut with a film that is equal parts Rocky Horror Picture Show and early Cronenberg. Starring Jane Levy of the recent About Alex, it revolves around a small-town teenager in the ’60s whose dream of becoming a famous singer is dashed...

Line-up includes new features by Dario Argento, Jacob Tierney and Fantasia alumni Rob Grant and Kerry Prior.
Montreal’s Fantasia International Film Festival has announced the Off-Frontières selection for this year’s Frontières International Co-Production Market.
The line-up of 12 projects features projects from Canada, Mexico and the UK, among others, and includes the next features from Dario Argento and Jacob Tierney as well as follow-up features from Fantasia alumni Rob Grant, Pat Kiely, Kerry Prior and Olivier Sabino.
Stephanie Trepanier, Frontières creative director, told Screen: “The Off-Frontières line-up of project always allows us to include more projects we believe in, but couldn’t fit in the official 12-projects selection because of quota limitations or because the project is more advanced than the scope we set for the official Frontières line-up.

It's been a whopping 30 years since Spitting Image first hit our screens on ITV in 1984. The satirical puppet show quickly became one of the most-watched shows of the 1980s and early 1990s.
I wasn't able to fully appreciate the series when it was first on TV. When I watched it in the early '90s as a child, I found it funny mainly because of the silly puppets, even if I didn't quite understand what was going on. But in retrospective viewings, it still holds up as a genuinely hilarious satire of politics, entertainment, sport and general UK culture of the era.
It's quite incredible to think that Spitting Image hasn't been on air since 1996. To put that into perspective, the Spice Girls had only just been unleashed, Tony Blair hadn't been elected yet, and Lorde had only just been born.

With the exception of the classic seminal Hitch-Hiker’s Guide To The Galaxy, funny science-fiction shows are in short supply. So much so, in fact, that I believe Red Dwarf may be the only one around — who mentioned Hyperspace? Get the hell out of here! The thing about it is that it doesn’t just lampoon science-fiction: that would be easy enough to do, as films like Spaceballs and Galaxy Quest, and even the Robot Chicken Star Wars have shown us. But it’s a lot harder to be properly respectful to the thing you’re putting a humorous slant on, and to understand and embrace it, than it is just to basically make a laugh out of it. And Red Dwarf has I believe managed to straddle the border between serious or at least semi-serious sci-fi and comedy, without totally sliding over onto either side.
Now you might say that’s wrong,...

Tonight sees the continuation of the first full series of Red Dwarf for thirteen years. Harkening back to the character dynamic of Series Six, senile shipboard computer Holly is absent and the main cast consists of the core four: curry loving slob Dave Lister (Craig Charles), cowardly and officious hologram Arnold Rimmer (Chris Barrie), the well dressed but self-absorbed Cat (Danny John-Jules), and insecure robot Kryten (Robert Llewellyn). So in celebration of Red Dwarf X, we count down the programme’s top five episodes…
5. Stoke Me A Clipper – Series Seven Episode Two
Series Seven and Eight are sort of the black sheep of Red Dwarf. The majority of fans regard them with a certain amount of disdain and the general consensus is that Series Seven is where everything went downhill thanks to the departure of co-creator Rob Grant, and Rimmer being replaced with a parallel version of Lister’s former love interest Kristine Kochanski.

The Doctor attempts to help the Indian Space Agency about a runaway spaceship of Canadian size headed for Earth. Promising to stop it before it needs to be blown up, he picks up a few friends – Rory and Amy (and Rory’s dad, accidentally) big game hunter John Riddell, and already in his company, Queen Nefertiti of Egypt. They find the ship is a derelict space ark, originally from Earth, created by the Silurians. But where are they, and how did a mysterious and heartless trader named Solomon get control of the ship?
Arthur Darvill had it exactly right when he discusses the latest episode of Doctor Who in a promotional video – “It does what it says on the tin”. The Doctor’s got a gang, Amy has her own companions, Rory’s got his dad, Rory’s dad’s got balls in his pants, the ship’s got a surprising builder,...

It’s a tricky thing, mashing together genres. Whether it’s horror, romance, westerns, or in this case, sci-fi and comedy, you have to find just the right balance of each to make it work. Too much of one element will cause the whole product to fall apart. Somehow, back in the eighties, Rob Grant and Doug Naylor made it work when they created Red Dwarf, a tale of Dave Lister (Craig Charles), a slacker who winds up on a mining vessel (in the novels he ended up stranded on one of Jupiter’s moons after a night of heavy drinking, and signed on to get the money to get back to Earth). Due to insubordination, Lister winds up in stasis while everyone else on board is killed in an accident. Three million years later he is released with only the hologram of his dead bunkmate Arnold Rimmer (Chris Barrie), who Lister detests,...

An adolescent’s sixteenth birthday marks a turning point in life when maturation occurs at a much more rapid pace and the teenager begins to be faced with difficult and important decisions that will shape their future. The same can be said of Montreal’s Fantasia International Film Festival, set to kick off its sixteenth edition tomorrow: its Super Sweet Sixteen promises to be nothing if not interesting. That’s not to say that the main focus of North America’s largest genre film festival is changing; in fact, between prolific director Takashi Miike’s festival opener For Love’s Sake – fresh from Cannes and having its North American premiere – and the Canadian premiere of animation studio Laika’s Paranorman, which closes the fest three weeks later, filmgoers will have a whopping 160 films from around the world to choose from. Sitges eat your heart out.

Whitney Cummings, who knows a thing or two about getting reactions from the Internet, has come to the defense of Lana Del Rey and her polarizing Saturday Night Live performance. Cummings wrote she “get very protective of girls, especially young performers” and reiterated that critics should “cut some slack” because it’s “hard to entertain people and it takes a lot of work.”

Daniel Radcliffe has defended singer Lana Del Rey after her performance on the Saturday Night Live show he hosted in the U.S. at the weekend was savaged by critics.
Radcliffe showed off his comedic timing during his hosting duties on the legendary sketch show, and Del Rey provided the musical interlude, but her lacklustre performances of Video Games and Blue Jeans left viewers far from impressed, and many, like rocker/actress Juliette Lewis, took to the Internet to question her talent and credentials for appearing.
Now Radcliffe has spoken out in defence of the young star, and insists he can't believe how quickly the public have turned on her.
He tells the BBC, "It was unfortunate that people seemed to turn on her so quickly. I also think people are making it about things other than the performance.
"If you read what people are saying about her online, it's all about her past and her family and stuff that's nobody else's business. I don't think it (her performance) warranted anywhere near that reaction."
Del Rey, real name Elizabeth Grant, is the daughter of multi-millionaire tycoon Rob Grant, and has come under fire for her privileged background and top-class private education.

Good news tonight as Red Dwarf stars Craig Charles and Robert Llewellyn have confirmed that a new series of the immensely popular sci-fi comedy has been commissioned.
Eight series of the comedy were shown on the BBC during 1988 and 1999, with a special three episode arc being commissioned and shown on the UK channel Dave ten years after the series came to an end. This return to the Dwarf was clearly successful enough for the channel to go all in for another six episodes.
Craig Charles spoke to Real Radio this morning and revealed the news and according to a blog post by Llewellyn, said later,
I did a radio interview and it just sort of slipped out.
The interview in question was quoted in the Mail, with Charles offering a glimmer of hope to those who felt the latter series had come to a creative block, relying on garish CG...

With Avatar now the highest grossing film in history and the ever popular Twilight franchise amassing huge wads of cash for anyone within touching distance of it, it seems we have a thing for a good old fashioned inter-species romp these days.
Here's a list of what I consider to be ten completely inappropriate love affairs...
Avatar: Jake and Neytiri
Avatar has, at its heart, a story that's been told a thousand times before and of these thousand tellings probably about 900-950 of them have been deeper and more subtle .
However, it is engaging and you can't help but root for Jake and Neytiri even if they are ironically a bit two dimensional. It's not a romance though that really ever feels anywhere near fleshed out.
Still, Shakespeare used old stories from myth and folk lore to structure his poetry around.

Though it has never managed to achieve anything beyond cult status in the Us (a planned American remake never made it past a pilot) Red Dwarf has steadily evolved in its native Britain from a quirky sci-fi sitcom into a veritable cultural institution as one of the most beloved comedy series of all time. Originally a short radio play titled Dave Hollins: Space Cadet, penned by Rob Grant and Doug Naylor, Red Dwarf is a sci-fi slacker comedy about a lazy, drunken slob named Dave Lister (Craig Charles). Lister has no ambition, the personal hygiene of a homeless teenager, and subsists on a diet consisting entirely of curry and lager. He also happens to be the last human being in the universe.
