David Lynch's oft-maligned film Fire Walk With Me has been recently released by the Criterion Collection, and it's way past time. The film has also steadily been gaining acceptance for daring to be much, much darker than the television show --- finally. But better late than never, right? The stand-alone film --- made after the first two seasons of Twin Peaks --- goes back to the sleepy Northwestern town and tells us (or more appropriately, shows us glimpses of) what happened during the last seven days of Laura Palmer's life. Gone are the kooky, simple exchanges of the townspeople between the real meat of the series --- and this is one reason why Fire Walk With Me was condemned. However, this was precisely why this film always worked for me,...

Welcome to the latest installment in our regular Movies You May Have Missed series here on Nerdly, in which I highlight some of, what I think, are the best movies that have flown under the radar of many or have been “forgotten” in the intervening years since its release. This time round its a fantastic British comedy, Pulp.
Official Synopsis:
Thunder Racers, Infinite Finity, Rat Warriors. Junk Comics’ titles have been referred to as ‘the worst printed material since Mein Kampf’. Tony Leary, the nice-guy owner of Junk Comics, is gearing up for one last roll of the dice. His new superhero title, The Sodomizer, launches at the British International Comic Show, and nothing will stop Tony from making it a success. Nothing except a gang of Geordie criminals who are using a comic company to launder their dirty money. Tony is drafted by the police to identify the culprits and bring them to justice.

To the naysayers who complain about superhero movies being “all the same,” I offer a counterpoint: Logan. There’s minimal franchise cross-promotion. No one-off cameos and no post-credits teases (at least in press screenings). James Mangold honors Hugh Jackman’s final contracted Wolverine performance like a sympathetic hangman, and what a sendoff it is. Jackman rides into the sunset, chewing a smokey cigar while reflecting on his longstanding relationship with Hollywood’s most prolific X-Men renegade. If Logan is indeed Jackman’s final unsheathing of those iconic adamantium claws, it’ll stand as a pitch-perfect goodbye. It’s not just “good for a comic book movie.” Logan is a heartbreaking love-letter to fans, cast and crew, but also a bloodthirsty outlaw tale that blazes with chiseled unrest.
Mangold introduces old-man Logan during his darkest days. Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart) is sick with a deteriorating brain disease, Logan is growing weaker...

Many people pine for the one that got away. For a swathe of science fiction fans, their great lost love is Joss Whedon’s space western show Firefly, but for a few of us there was also another sci-fi show cruelly cut off in its prime after just a few great episodes in the 00s – and that show is The Lost Room.

Hello again, dear readers. I hope you’re enjoying the summer movie season. This week takes a break from the big blockbusters, with the two major releases being Clint Eastwood’s musical Jersey Boys and the completely unnecessary comedy sequel Think Like a Man Too. And in the spirit of offbeat releases, this week’s slightly-delayed installment of Trailer Trashin’ features the upcoming comedy-drama Birdman.
Premise: Washed-up actor Riggan Thomson (Michael Keaton) – famous for playing the iconic superhero Birdman – struggles to mount a Broadway play, an adaptation of Raymond Carver’s 1981 short story collection What We Talk About When We Talk About Love. In the days leading up to opening night, he battles his ego and attempts to recover his family, his career, and himself.
My take: For people my age and younger, it’s getting hard to remember a time when superheroes haven’t been a huge part of movies.

The central thrust of this week’s The Walking Dead is still “get the guys back together so they can hang out again,” and it really does feel like we’re gradually, ever so gradually, working towards that. Characters are starting to meet each others’ orbits, and starting to tread where their friends have trodden earlier on, all working towards reaching this mysterious “terminus,” the Sanctuary that we get one step closer to actualizing in this episode.
The final lingering shot this week is of Carl, Rick and Michonne heading on down those train tracks that we saw Carol, Tyreese and the kids head down last episode, but we don’t need to worry about that right now. The most important thing about this episode is that we get the first glimpse of an actual explanation for everything that’s occurred. It’s easy to forget amongst the excitement of potential zombie babies,...

Scarlett Johansson is one step closer to tying the knot with her journalist boyfriend, Romain Dauriac, reports People.
A source tells the site, "They're engaged and very happy." The proposal apparently went down a month ago, with Dauriac presenting Johansson -- who was previously married to Ryan Reynolds -- with a vintage Art Deco ring.
Johansson's rep has confirmed the news, adding that the couple has yet to choose a date for their wedding.
Johansson was photographed wearing the bling in question when she stepped out for the Venice Film Festival premiere of her upcoming sci-fi film "Under the Skin" on September 3. She plays a seductive alien who preys on men in Scotland in the dark, mysterious indie based on Michel Faber's debut novel.
"I'm playing a character called Laura, who is an it that becomes a she," Johansson told Interview magazine back when "We Bought a Zoo" arrived in theaters.

Like Night of the Hunter, Tod Browning’s Freaks or Leonard Kastle’s The Honeymoon Killers, The Road to Yesterday can be ranked among the UFOs of cinema. It’s place in the heart of Cecil B. DeMille’s work proves to be in itself very distinctive. We know that, during his entire life, DeMille had virtually only one producer—Paramount (the former Famous Players Lasky)—just like Minnelli was MGM’s man and Corman American International’s. Sixty-three of his films (out of seventy) were produced at Paramount. And, oddly enough, it is among the seven outsiders, situated within a brief period from 1925 to 1931, that his best activity is to be found (I’m thinking of Madam Satan, The Godless Girl, and The Road to Yesterday)–his most audacious undertakings. To top it off, for this uncontested king of the box office, his best films were his biggest commercial failures.

The Strain No. 10
Things are not going well in New York City and the outer boroughs. A strain of "vampirism" has broken out big time, and a rag tag group of survivors attempts to investigate and find their loved ones. This issue has them tussling with "the master" and it alludes to an even bigger fight with the big baddie next issue. All in all the big apple has had a huge bite taken out of it, and the chaos is only just ramping up.

America's Next Top Model came back from hiatus right when the competition was revving up. Down to the final six and on the edge of going international, the show still had yet to bring back a competitor and had more than enough time to continue the gelling at panel. The cycle had been more about getting used to the changes that had been implemented before the season began, but now that we're halfway through, it's time that tentativeness gave way to Top Model insanity.

It’s hard to have a wedding in a movie where something terrible doesn’t happen; it wouldn’t really be that fun to watch otherwise. It’s not totally unrealistic – after all, crazy people get married too. If we actually lived in a world of mutants and superheroes, they too would get married and it would probably go as well in real life as it does in the movies. Here are some of the most extreme weddings in films – weddings that, provided the bride and groom survive (and not all do), are going to produce some incredibly crazy offspring. 8. Kyle and Laura in Very Bad Things If you had to call a dark comedy “by-the-book,” this movie would be just that. It’s a film to point to when defining the genre because it has just the right amount of hilarity and horror to make the audience unsure what to feel by the time the credits...

Um, I am still recovering from last night's episode of America's Next Top Model. If you're more interested in the typical fall slate of festival entrees than summer's glut of tentpole action fare, this is a great week. The Toronto International Film Festival announced the first wave of films that will play the fest in September. This is a batch of about 50 titles, which makes up only a small chunk of the programming. Usually Tiff features between two and three hundred films. But these are some of the highest-profile entries. Below you'll find rundowns on the new films from George Clooney, Bennett Miller, Jay & Mark Duplass, Todd Solondz, Francis Ford Coppola, Cameron Crowe, Sarah Polley, Fernando Meirelles, Lars von Trier, Marc Forster, Steve McQueen, Alexander Payne, and Lynne Ramsay. No announcement yet of the Midnight Madness programming choices, always some of my faves, but this is a great start. This is quite the list -- there are easily thirty films here that could be potential top ten for 2011 candidates,...

The Toronto International Film Festival is once again proving to be a major stop on the festival circuit. The announcement was released yesterday of 53 titles, including 31 world premieres, and some of the biggest names of the year are among them. It looks like we're in for another great year at the Toronto International Film Festival, and I'm excited to be just a little bit closer to the action this time around. The very first titles from the 2011 fest were announced today, and there were definitely a lot of familiar faces among the 10 Galas and 43 Special Presentations. George Clooney is back with two films this year (The Ides of March and The Descendants) and many other Tiff alumni are returning with their latest works including David Cronenberg (A Dangerous Method), Lars Von Trier (Melancholia), Todd Solondz (Dark Horse), Fernando Meirelles (360), Nicolas Winding Refn (Drive), Steve McQueen (Shame), Pedro Almodóvar (The Skin I Live In), Michael Winterbottom (Trishna) and Sarah Polley (Take This Waltz). Both Moneyball and 50/50 fill the requisite "big September release with awards potential" slots, while Roland Emmerich's Anonymous was a bit of a surprise pick. However, for the first time ever,...

"Cars 2, directed (like several great Pixar films of the last two decades) by John Lasseter, finds itself in the unlucky position of the not-so-bright kid in a brilliant family," finds Slate's Dana Stevens. "No matter if his performance in school is comfortably average; he'll always be seen as a disappointment compared to his stellar siblings. There's nothing really objectionable about Cars 2, although parents of young children should be warned that a few evil vehicles meet violently inauspicious ends. It's sweet-spirited, visually delightful (if aurally cacophonous), and it will make for a pleasant enough family afternoon at the movies. But we've come to expect so much more than mere pleasantness from Pixar that Cars 2 feels almost like a betrayal."
Nick Schager for the Voice: "Pixar's Cars franchise takes a sharp turn from Nascar mayhem and rural red-state-targeted 50s nostalgia to 007 espionage with this upgraded sequel, though in its...

New Line may have picked up the rights to a new cheerleading story, but it will certainly be a far cry from the likes of "Bring it On" and its several (unnecessary) sequels.
Laura Vikmanis, the 42-year-old Ben-Gal who currently holds the record as the NFL's oldest cheerleader, will be the subject of a new big-screen project according to The Hollywood Reporter. Don't expect just a fluffy comedy about blonde cheerleaders though, as the story is being compared to Sandra Bullock's "The Blind Side."
Co-writers Kathy Greenberg and Emily Cook explain that while there will be some humor in the story, it will definitely hold more substance.
"It's really a feel good populist story in the vein of 'Blind Side,'" Greenberg says. "It's got more comedy to be sure, but it's an earnest story."

The Hollywood Reporter is hearing that New Line Cinema has picked up a treatment by Emily Cook and Kathy Greenberg (Gnomeo & Juliet, Ratatouille) about Laura Vikmanis, who’s a 42 year-old Cheerleader. The film is said to be a “feel good populist story in the vein of Blind Side. It’s got more comedy to be sure, but it’s an earnest story,” according to Greenberg. Richard and Lauren Shuler Donner are producing the film with Jack Leslie, Donner’s Co. President. No word on who could direct or star in the film just yet.
Cook found that it was easy to find inpiration into Vikmanis’s life. “She is a 42-year-old in a sea of 20-year-olds; she’s definitely a fish in out of water. It’s a great contrast. And she proved you can reinvent yourself at any age,” Cook said. Vikmanis is a mother of two teenage daughters,...

Any producer with half a brain is eager to compare their potential project to The Blind Side, the movie that grossed $300 million worldwide when nobody expected anything out of it. But New Line may have the actual next Blind Side on their hands-- an inspirational sports movie with a role tailor made for Sandra Bullock. As THR reports, they've got producers RIchard and Lauren Shuler Donner working on the life story of Laura Vikmanis, who at 42 is the oldest cheerleader in the NFL. The movie will be based on both on Vikmanis's life rights and a pitch from writers Emily Cook and Kathy Greenberg, who worked on Gnomeo and Juliet but I'll choose not to hold that against them. Vikmanis didn't exactly age up in the cheerleader ranks-- at 39, when her husband left her for a younger woman, she spent a year training in order to try out for the...

You might not know that I’m an aspiring screen writer. Not like, “I write scripts but haven’t sold one yet.” No, more akin to the way everyone wants to write a blockbuster screenplay and sell it for millions of dollars and retire to Hawaii. With that dream in mind, several years ago I tried to get a foot in the door in Hollywood by taking a job as Kevin Smith’s personal assistant. I figured it’d be a fun starting point; I’d always admired Smith (Clerks was the reason I got into film writing.)
Fun is the farthest word from describing that experience, though. I met some famous people, sure. But it was more of a wasted week. I don’t think I did anything that’ll help me sell a script. If you want to be “in” with Hollywood, don’t work for Kevin Smith.

Spaced repeats from episode one, and there's a bit of Harry Hill. Fortunately, there are also lots and lots of great movies on UK TV this coming week...
Well, we hope you're a movie fan, because there aren't many TV shows to highlight. In fact, all we can point to is some overflow from last week's abundant new starts and returning series.
We missed telling you that the newest series of the prop explosion Harry Hill's TV Burp returned for an eleventh go at its neighbours on the telly schedules. But, not to worry, as it's often repeated and you can catch the first episode when it shows again tonight, Friday, February 11th at 8:30pm, or Saturday, February 12th at 6:50pm. Our hope is that the Heather-look-a-likey has been retired, but we never tire of the Knitted Character, or any pals it wants to bring along to the new series.

The third season of 90210 has reached the midseason mark, leaving fans with a jaw-dropping cliffhanger from a stellar year so far. After a highly problematic second season (featuring one of the most deranged teen characters known to man), the show bounced back from its dark days and truly became a teenage dream to actually smile about like a love struck idiot. The characters have matured (a little bit), the story lines have improved (tremendously), and the fans are 'hella' gracious for this guilty pleasure.
So let's take a look back at what has made the new kids of West Beverly's senior year quite enjoyable.
The Class of West Beverly
So far, senior year has been pretty eventful for the kids of 90210 as they've dealt with rape, fame, family issues, and sexual revelations, all if which have helped the characters find their footing on the show. Naomi, Teddy, and Navid have...

The Next Three Days
Directed by: Paul Haggis
Cast: Russell Crowe, Elizabeth Banks, Olivia Wilde
Running Time: 2 hrs 2 mins
Rating: PG-13
Release Date: November 19, 2010
Plot: John (Crowe) and Laura (Banks) are a married couple whose life is nearly destroyed when Laura is accused of murder. John will do anything to get her out.
Who’S It For? It’s a slow-building thriller. You have to have some patience and also believe that Crowe isn’t too much of a star to play an everyman.
Expectations: Almost zero. I knew next to nothing about this film. Thriller, Russell Crowe … that’s it. That’s the list.
Scorecard (0-10)
Actors:
Russell Crowe as John Brennan: This is most definitely a “Russell Crowe film” and here’s the amazing thing: he can still play a regular guy. That’s not true with other actors. It’s very hard to put yourself in...

Guess who’s letting fame get to his head? Snooki says now that The Situation is appearing on Dancing With the Stars, he’s become unbearable!
Uh-oh…sounds like there’s trouble in the paradise we like to call The Jersey Shore! Jersey girl Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi confirms that Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino’s ego is even bigger than his muscles – and she doesn’t like how he’s changed!
“Mike is definitely the biggest diva!” Snooks confirmed to HollywoodLife.com exclusively at In Touch Weekly’s post-VMAs bash in West Hollywood, Calif. Sept. 12.
But why? simply because he’s the only Jersey member to score a second reality series (Dancing With the Stars)? “I definitely think Mike changed the most, because it went to his head a little bit,” she explained to us. “And he likes to brag about a lot of things, and I don’t like to brag about them.

Sandra Bullock confronted her philandering hubby Jesse James before news of his cheating went public – and their screaming match was like something out of a movie!
Sandra Bullock knew about her husband’s affair with stripper Michelle ‘Bombshell’ McGee long before news broke in In Touch Weekly March 17 – and her final showdown with Jesse James was one screaming match he’ll never forget.
“Sandra is basically so embarrassed she wants to die,” an insider told RadarOnline. “They have had several screaming matches over the phone.”
Jesse, 40, reportedly broke down in tears when his 41-year-old wife told him she wanted a divorce. “[Jesse] was drinking while they were talking,” said the insider, adding that he “tried to emotionally manipulate [Sandra] with his five-year-old daughter, Sunny, to win her back.
Where do they stand now? After three other potential mistresses have now come forward, Sandra is wisely ignoring Jesse’s repeated calls for contact.

Like too many of its predecessors in the parody-film genre, including the recent Date Movie and Epic Movie, this would-be satire directed by Tom Brady features a procession of familiar and not-so-familiar scenes from its inspirations modified with the lamest of gags. In this case, the PG-13 rating even dampens down the normally enjoyable raunch factor to a depressingly low level.
Veteran supporting player David Koechner gets his Will Ferrell-style moment in the spotlight with his starring turn as Coach Lambeau Fields -- if the joke has to be explained, this might not be the film for you -- who is assigned the task of whipping a small town Texas college football team into shape in time for the big game.
This provides the framework for a barrage of bits lampooning seemingly dozens of sports movies from recent years, including Miracle, Rudy, Friday Night Lights, Invincible, Remember the Titans, Rocky and even such relatively little seen titles as Stick It. At one point, a musical number featuring a Journey song also is thrown in for no particularly good reason.
Most of the gags fail miserably, achieving little more than to provide momentary reminders of their inspirations. And the tangential jokes like the coach's sexually frustrated wife (Melora Hardin) passing off her young lover as an exchange student from the country of "Makingsweetlovetoyourwifeistan", are similarly lame.
While many of the film's targets like Cuba Gooding Jr.'s annoying turn as the mentally challenged Radio (here dubbed "iPod": these are the jokes, folks) are well-deserving of ridicule, the ineffective spoofing on display actually makes them seem better in retrospect.
Koechner tries hard, but ultimately scores few laughs except for when, like Ferrell, he bares his comically less than toned, fleshy body. Some of the supporting players manage to provide fun moments, such as Matthew Lawrence as a teen quarterback with sexuality issues and Carl Weathers as a rival coach.
