Its been awhile since Spike Lee has directed a project. His last film The Miracle of St. Anna went under the radar so his last big studio film of recognition was the thriller Inside Man.
Deadline New York is reporting that Lee is closing up a deal to direct Nagasaki Deadline.
The story centers on a downtrodden FBI agent who races against the clock to foil two terrorist attacks on U.S. soil. The agent must delve through historical events that appear to be linked to the plot against America. Martin Campbell was originally set to direct the film before dropping out to direct Green Lantern.
Lee would be directing the film from a script by William Broyles Jr., who rewrote from an original script by David Griffiths and Peter Griffiths. Big names like James Cameron, Jon Landau and Rae Sanchini are producing the film under their Lightstorm Entertainment banner...

Director courts controversy with film about attacks on Us soil
Spike Lee is finalising a deal to direct the terrorism thriller Nagasaki Deadline, in which an emotionally damaged FBI agent must decipher clues based on historical events in order to avert disaster. Film company Alcon Entertainment yesterday confirmed a story that was originally broken by the Deadline blog.
Nagasaki Deadline will be Lee's first dramatic tale since 2008's Miracle at St Anna, his riposte to Clint Eastwood's second world war tales Flags of Our Fathers and Letters from Iwo Jima. It centres on a desperate race to thwart two terrorist attacks on American soil. The agent heading up the investigations begins to realise that he must think outside the box and consider theories that the crime is tied to historical events if he is to save lives.
The venture has been gestating for some time and is not a Lee pet project.

Filmmaker Spike Lee will be transitioning from historically based features to thrillers as he circles around the director's chair on the project "Nagasaki Deadline". Of course the story line does relate towards a couple of recent terrible events that have happened, so that could account for Lee's attraction to this project. The story, written by David and Peter Griffiths, is about an FBI agent who's on the hunt to take down two terrorists and their plans to attack many on American soil. Those signed on to produce is Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove from Alcon Entertainment along with Jon Landau, Rae Sanchini and James Cameron from Lightstorm Entertainment. This is quite the intense thriller here on our hands, but surprisingly it's been in and out of development for years. The script first rose in the studio eye prior to 9/11, and after then you can easily guess what happened to it.

Spike Lee is currently in negotiations to take the wheel of the action-thriller "Nagasaki Deadline." Warner Bros.-based Alcon Entertainment will finance. Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson of Alcove are co-producing alongside 8:38 Productions' Kira Davis and Jon Landau and Rae Sanchini. "Nagasaki" is written by David and Peter Griffiths ("The Hunted," "Collateral Damage") and tells of an emotionally scarred FBI agent who must decipher historic events in order to avert a terrorist plot. William Broyles Jr. ("Cast Away") did a rewrite of the Griffiths' script, and the Griffiths completed a subsequent polish.

With Inside Man 2 not happening, Spike Lee's next feature film may at least have some narrative similarities to his original heist drama. According to Deadline, the filmmaker is next directing the long-in-the-works Nagasaki Deadline, which deals with terrorist plots revealed to be "tied to historical events." Given the title, we can assume the historical events are the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Just as Inside Man dealt with a post-9/11 New York City while also referencing the Holocaust, Nagasaki could also be a film primarily dealing with racial profiling that similarly references World War II.
Interestingly, while this would appear to fit in with Lee's interest in the aftermath of 9/11 (see also The 25th Hour) -- as well as in WW2 (Miracle at St. Anna; the in-development Now the Hell Will Start) -- the project began prior to the 2001 attacks and was understandably put on hiatus for some time following the tragedy.

Two years on from his Eastwood-baiting Miracle at St Anna, and four years after his last mainstream thriller Inside Man, Spike Lee is about to close a deal to direct Nagasaki Deadline, according to, er, Deadline. James Cameron and his Lightstorm Entertainment cohorts will be producing. The script by David and Peter Griffiths has been doing the rounds for several years. The story of an FBI agent racing against the clock to prevent a double home-soil terrorist attack was shelved by Fox after 9/11 (as, more temporarily, was David and Peter's Arnold Schwarzenegger vehicle Collateral Damage). Resurrected more recently, it lost its director Martin Campbell to Green Lantern. A good opportunity for Lee then, whose reputation for being outspoken and difficult meant offers didn't exactly come flooding in after Inside Man, even though it performed well, box-office-wise.Lee as director-for-hire (Inside Man, Clockers) is admittedly not quite so interesting as the...

[Deadline]The film was originally written by David and Peter Griffiths, and was over at Fox until it got dropped due to the subject matter, just another Tom Rothman creative casualty. It got dropped due to the subject matter. Alcon Entertainment brought the project back to life and hired writer William Broyles Jr. (Cast Away) for another draft. Martin Campbell was once in the director’s chair but left for The Green Lantern.

By now everyone should be familiar with Martin Campbell. He has saved the James Bond franchise from death twice and has brought us a handful of other great action films as well. He's currently out shooting a thrilled named Edge of Darkness with Mel Gibson and Ray Winstone that sounds like it should be pretty damn good. While he's also got a couple of other projects lined up (including The Birds), Variety announces today he will also direct an action thriller titled Nagasaki Deadline. The story centers on an emotionally damaged FBI agent who must decipher historic events in a desperate race to avert a terrorist plot. Nagasaki Deadline's screenplay was written by David and Peter Griffiths, of Collateral Damage and The Hunted previously. We already know that Martin Campbell's the guy to go to when you want to relaunch the Bond franchise or give Zorro a makeover, but he's just lined up a fresh action thriller, Nagasaki Deadline, to direct. The film's the story of an "emotionally damaged" FBI agent who has to decipher historical events in the race to stop a terrorist plot. Given the title, are we looking at World War II-era history? Well, it's not clear yet - but the fact that this was in pre-production prior to 9/11 before being shelved as a result suggests that weapons of mass destruction might be involved. The screenplay was written by David and Peter Griffiths (Collateral Damage) who'll also be producing, and is currently having a rewrite by William Cast Away Broyles Jr. The film's on the fast track to go into production next year, but there's no cast as yet, and...
