Refresh for updates Fittingly, the reactions so far to the death of writer Harlan Ellison came mainly from the community that he was immersed in for most of his career – the science-fiction writers, filmmakers, critics, punks, artists and comic creators that worshipped him as a literary idol.
The comments were honest, sometimes brutally so, but mostly funny, capturing the irascible Ellison as someone who loved provoking the world as he moved through it.
Here are some reactions so far:
Harlan Ellison: There was no one quite like him in American letters, and never will be. Angry, funny, eloquent, hugely talented. If there's an afterlife, Harlan is already kicking ass and taking down names.

Dana Loesch, the conservative radio host who spoke for the NRA at this week’s CNN town hall on gun violence – and got a laugh-free response of hisses, boos and groans – once wanted to be a sitcom star. Yes, the woman who told CNN it “loves mass shootings” and that “crying white mothers are ratings gold” apparently sees herself as some sort of right-wing Mary Richards. Don’t quit your day job, Dana Loesch. If you were still counting on salvaging a decade-old TV pitch, that is. Loesch has fast gained notoriety as the NRA spokeswoman representing the organization amid intense backlash after the Parkland school shooting last week. Her newfound fame must have triggered a memory for “NCIS: New Orleans” and “The Librarians” producer Paul Guyot, who tweeted about a sitcom idea he says Loesch pitched him several years ago. “Dana Loesch came to me 10yrs ago pitching a sitcom starring herself: ‘A hot young mom who does far right radio show,'” Guyot wrote Wednesday, the night...

Geostorm was slammed by critics, and struggled at the box office. But one man wants to fight its corner. Again.
Geostorm, then. We’re back here. A film that finally popped up in cinemas last year, after a gestation period that could best be described as on the difficult side. The brainchild of writers Paul Guyot and Independence Day producer and writer Dean Devlin, it was quickly sneered at, dismissed, and filed as fodder to do stories along the lines of ‘Warner Bros will lose $xm on Geostorm hur hur’.

It’s the end of the world yet again in the sci-fi disaster thriller, Geostorm. An unofficial sequel to Michael Bay’s Armageddon...?
With Independence Day, director Roland Emmerich and producer Dean Devlin managed to single-handedly resuscitate the disaster movie - a genre that had wheezed to a halt following an increasingly daft sequence of examples in the late 70s and early 80s (for a stunning night in, check out the low-rent majesty of Meteor, The Swarm or When Time Ran Out). Sure, Independence Day was an alien invasion movie straight out of the 50s, but its scenes of global panic and destruction were pure Irwin Allen. A certified hit in 1996, Independence Day sparked a wave of incendiary movies in the same vein, with scenarios varying from exploding volcanoes (Dante’s Peak and, well, Volcano), a giant monster (Godzilla) and duelling asteroid movies Deep Impact and Armageddon.

It has been announced by MGM and Warner Bros. that work is moving ahead on a Stargate remake which is set to be the first in a planned trilogy of remakes based on the original 1994 film.
However, this news likely won’t go down particularly well with fans of the TV series which picked up from the events of the movie and spawned a number of popular spin-offs. This movie will presumably wipe those from continuity as it’s a reboot which is also rumoured to be some sort of continuation of the original.
Also mentioned in the press release is the fact that Emmerich is set to shoot Independence Day 2 and 3 (a.k.a. ID: Forever Part II and Part III) back to back, but with the former set for a 2016 release, does that mean we won’t see this Stargate remake until 2020? If that is indeed the case,...

That elsewhere could include a feature film version of the drama. “That would be fun to do. That’s definitely a possibility,” said Devlin, who is scheduled to make his own feature directorial debut with a global disaster film written by himself and Paul Guyot. “Look, it’s a long shot but we have a lot of love for the show and the fans have been tremendously supportive. If we can find a way for it to continue we’ll pursue,” he added of Leverage’s future. 2012 has come and gone without the kind of massive world-ending tragedy that some feared (and many more joked) would be signaled by the abrupt end of the Mayan calendar, an event immortalized in Roland Emmerich's splashy action-adventure 2012. The master of disaster movies is currently on post-production on White House Down. But while he tackles the troubling topic of terrorists invading 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, his Independence Day, Stargate and Godzilla co-writer Dean Devlin is selling a new form of global disaster, and cashing in big. Deadline reports Devlin and writing partner Paul Guyot have "pre-emptively" sold their spec script to Skydance Production for an untitled global catastrophe movie for a whopping seven-figure pay day. Devlin's own production company Electric Entertainment will produce the pic alongside Skydance's founder David Ellison (Mission: Impossible . Ghost Protocol), and Dana Goldberg (I Am Legend). While this might sound a ripe property for Devlin's long-time collaborator Emmerich...

1.) Ang Lee was just nominated for an Oscar this morning for his latest film, Life of Pi, and now reports say he's keen on directing Angelina Jolie in Cleopatra after David Fincher was the latest director to come and go, following in the footsteps of James Cameron and Paul Greengrass. "I'm about to read the script," Lee told The Hollywood Reporter. "It just feels right to me after all the other types of films I've done. What does it have in common with any of them? They're all totally different! That's what makes this perfect." The film has been gestating since 2010, so hopefully Lee strikes a deal and finally gets this thing made. 2.) Robin Williams will star in Boulevard, the next project from A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints helmer Dito Montiel. Williams will play a devoted husband in a marriage of convenience who meets a young man (newcomer Roberto...

Exclusive: In a seven-figure deal, David Ellison’s Skydance Productions has pre-emptively purchased an untitled global disaster film spec script written by Dean Devlin and Paul Guyot. Devlin will make his feature directing debut. Skydance’s Ellison and Dana Goldberg will produce with Devlin and his Electric Entertainment team of Marc Roskin and Rachel Olschan. Devlin returns to the global destruction sandbox he played in when he and then-partner Roland Emmerich sold their Independence Day spec for millions, a guaranteed Fox green light and release date, and a global gross north of $800 million. They continued the destruction with Godzilla. While Emmerich continued crushing the planet with The Day After and 2012 (he and Devlin are working on two Independence Day sequels), Devlin formed Electric Entertainment and has put together movies (one was Flyboys, which featured avid aviator Ellison onscreen), and the Noah Wyle telepic series The Librarian. Devlin is currently exec...
