- Harrison was an English professor, teaching a class in screen-writing, at the University of Arkansas when he wrote both Rollerball (1975) and Mountains of the Moon (1990).

- He received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1973, and taught at the University of Arkansas until he retired in 1998.
- He wrote nine novels and dozens of short stories. Many of his stories are set in Africa, where he traveled extensively.
