The Voice will crown its Season 25 winner tonight, Tuesday, May 21, but before we get there, the Top 5 performed for one last time on Monday night (May 20), hoping to secure America’s votes. On Monday’s episode, the five remaining acts were tasked with performing an up-tempo song and a ballad. It was a night of fun and emotion, which, at one point, saw coach John Legend moved to tears. Team Legend’s Nathan Chester kicked things off with his upbeat performance of The Isley Brothers’ “It’s Your Thing,” electrifying the audience with his vocal range and stage presence. Later in the evening, Chester returned to the stage for a rousing rendition of Donny Hathaway’s “A Song for You,” hitting every note perfectly and making a great case for why he should be crowned champion. Team Reba’s Josh Sanders brought the country powerhouse vibes with his cover of...

Justin Timberlake‘s “Selfish” is a lot funkier than John Lennon’s songs. However, Timberlake said “Selfish” was influenced by a cover of one of John’s solo songs. The “Imagine” singer explained why the tune in question was so honest and revealing.
‘Selfish’ singer Justin Timberlake implied Generation Z doesn’t know John Lennon songs
During a 2024 interview with Apple Music, Timberlake discussed listening to a John cover. “A friend of mine, who’s also my music director, who’s probably a friend of the whole family over there, Adam Blackstone, he was doing these small jazz nights at a place in LA,” Timberlake recalled. “And he invited me to come down and he said, ‘Hey, man.’ He was like, ‘You want to come up and sing something?’
“And I randomly threw out, ‘Oh, yeah, let’s do Donny Hathaway’s cover of ‘Jealous Guy’ by Lennon,'” he said.

Although it isn’t structured any differently from dozens of other cradle-to-grave documentaries about artistic luminaries, “Luther: Never Too Much” sheds light on much more than just the life and career of R&b singer Luther Vandross. Drawn largely from interview and performance footage of Vandross over his almost 40 years in entertainment, and bolstered and contextualized by retrospective talks will collaborators and confidantes, director Dawn Porter’s film exposes some uneasy truths about the music industry and the media we may now know, but whose seeming ubiquitousness at the time he was alive may be difficult to fully comprehend.
White audience members in particular may stand to learn the most about him — a fact Porter pointedly attributes to the genre siloes of radio’s heyday and cultural prejudices against black singers who weren’t thin or light-skinned enough to receive the opportunity to cross over from R&b to pop.

A version of this response appeared on the Black Rock Coalition’s website.
When Rolling Stone co-founder Jann Wenner made offensive comments in The New York Times about women and Black artists, the Black Rock Coalition, which has battled stereotypes and musical categorizations about what rock is “supposed to be” since 1985, felt obligated to speak out and condemn his misogynistic and racist statements. While we were among many organizations and individuals to call out Wenner, he also had a number of supporters, citing his contributions to popular culture and to the world of music journalism.

The Beatles knew how to derive inspiration from the most unlikely places. A guru gave a lecture that inspired John Lennon and Paul McCartney to write songs. Paul’s song appeared on The White Album while John’s became one of his most notable solo ballads.
John Lennon and Paul McCartney initially wrote songs with similar names
During a 1980 interview from the book All We Are Saying: The Last Major Interview with John Lennon and Yoko Ono, John discussed his feelings about the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, his former guru. “Listen, if somebody’s gonna impress me, whether it be a Maharishi or a Yoko Ono, there comes a point when the emperor has no clothes,” he said. “There comes a point where I will see. So for all you folks out there who think that I’m having the wool pulled over my eyes — well, that’s an insult to me.

You and I, we go back a ways with The Voice, right? So we know: The show is often as much about the coaches’ confounding decisions as it is about the contestants’ efforts. Bob and I started spending more time in Detroit, his hometown. We had our big family wedding there, where Bob Seger and Hank Williams Jr. sang for us. Our life in Detroit was full of music. Kanye West has shared a new track addressing his recent antisemitism controversies.
The track, which was shared by the controversial rapper on Instagram before being deleted shortly after, heavily samples Donny Hathaway’s 1973 song “Someday We’ll All Be Free”.

“I think I’m Kanye mixed with Donny Hathaway,” raps Stormzy on the title track of his third album, This is What I Mean. There’s definitely a touch of the troubled West’s ambitious alchemy to the track, which pirouettes from a pretty piano intro (think child’s ballet rehearsal) into an elating, bass-blast of braggadocio, given dramatic ballast with operatic backing vocals.
But there’s really more of Hathaway to Croydon-born grime star. Not just because of the jazzy warmth with which this album leans into its soulful balladry. It’s there in the rich, stable sincerity of his vocals. Like Hathaway, 29-year-old Michael Owou Jr has a voice that can reach through the darkness and steady your heart. Even if you didn’t know that Stormzy’s the kind of national treasure who invests in scholarship schemes to support Black kids through Cambridge University, his decency feels embedded in his frequency.

There’s only one disappointment about Rita Wilson’s new album: she doesn’t rap. In March 2020, a week after her husband Tom Hanks sent shockwaves around the world by announcing the couple had come down with Covid, Wilson posted a video of herself in quarantine flawlessly rapping Naughty by Nature’s 1992 anthem “Hip Hop Hooray”. The clip has since racked up more than two million views on Instagram, earning praise from everyone from Kim Kardashian (“The best video Ever!!!!!!”) to Barack Obama. When news of this unlikely viral hit reached Naughty By Nature, the Grammy-winning trio released a remixed version of the single featuring Wilson on the mic to raise money for the MusiCares Covid-19 Relief Fund. Surely, then, the stage was set for Wilson to offer us her takes on Tupac and Nwa? She howls with laughter. “I think that’s my next project!” she jokes. “It’s funny,...

Rita Wilson sings with Willie Nelson, Smokey Robinson, Tim McGraw, Vince Gill and more on her latest album Rita Wilson Now & Forever: Duets. Released in late September, the record finds the singer-actress interpreting some of her favorite songs of the Seventies, like the Bee Gees’ “Massachusetts,” Paul Simon’s “Slip Slidin’ Away,” and Roberta Flack and Donny Hathaway’s “Where Is the Love.” Wilson is also re-creating the songs live onstage during a two-week residency at New York City’s Café Carlyle that kicked off earlier this week.

For 50 years, Pastor T.L. Barrett has delivered his sermons and gospel songs to his congregation in Chicago, but his musical impact has spread much farther. A sample of Barrett’s 1976 song “Father Stretch My Hands” laid the foundation for Kanye West’s The Life of Pablo tracks of the same name. The transcendent “Like a Ship” has featured in commercials, TV shows and the Oscar-nominated, Obamas-produced documentary Crip Camp, and most recently covered by Leon Bridges. His “Nobody Knows” has been sampled nearly 10 times in the past decade alone, including...

Singer-songwriter and radio host Estelle may have been born in the UK, but she has a special affinity for one distinctly American holiday: Juneteenth. "I just think it's a beautiful celebration of Blackness, and it's in the middle of Black Music Month, too," she told Popsugar. That's why she's marking the occasion with Estelle's Juneteenth Special at 1 p.m. on Apple Music Hits on June 19. And the day before, she'll be joined by DJ Mannie Fresh for a special Black Music Month mix on The Estelle Show. "I think of Stevie Wonder, I think of Lauryn Hill, I think of Jay-Z, I think of Nina Simone. These artists, through the ages, have spoken about freedom in all its facets," Estelle said. "And I'm looking forward to our show with one of the most prolific producers and DJs, Mannie Fresh, giving us all we need to get into the vibes."

Annie Clark has framed her frenetic and unabashedly retro new album Daddy’s Home as a kind of reckoning. Her father has returned home from prison, where he served 12 years for his involvement in a multi-million-dollar stock manipulation scheme; in the meantime, Clark radically transformed her St. Vincent music persona, evolving from a small-time indie artist with a cult following to a self-proclaimed “near-future cult leader” within pop music. While her last album Masseduction peered at her newfound fame through an electro-pop funhouse mirror, Daddy’s Home looks backward, examining Clark’s...

One of the last times Annie Clark went to see her father in a Texas prison, a fellow visitor asked her to autograph a receipt — the only paper they had on hand. “You can’t bring phones in, so you can’t take a normal selfie. I guess I’m glad that a selfie of me in there doesn’t exist,” Clark, 38, says. “I find it very darkly comic. It’s obviously very sad, but it’s also incredibly funny.”

The Mushroom is one of the favorites to win season 4 of “The Masked Singer.” He landed in the top six competing on the December 2 episode after his outstanding cover of “A Song for You” by Donny Hathaway in the Smackdown portion of the special Thanksgiving show. Can the Mushroom come from behind to win the coveted Golden Mask trophy on Season 4 of “The Masked Singer”? After the Jellyfish stung the competition and swam away into the Super Six by earning the most votes in the Group C finals, the crooning fungus joined her by proving he has the gills to go the distance. Mushroom took out Broccoli by belting out “A Song For You” by Donny Hathaway in the Group C smackdown. Now the Mushroom hopes to prove fungi really do have more fun on his quest to plant his stem in the winner’s circle.
Mushroom has driven the panel crazy by changing his vocal technique with each performance. After sauntering out and convincing everyone he was a female on Episode 5, Mushroom shocked the audience with his stirring rendition of “This Woman’s Work” by Maxwell. Nicole Scherzinger called it the most “transcending” performance ever on the show.

My brother rarely ever feels compelled to text me. Don’t get me wrong, we have a great relationship. When we talk, we run the gamut of pop culture, dating, social issues, philosophy, etc. That’s not the issue. It’s just that he’s an engineer, very bright, but not too keen on social norms — initiating conversations isn’t really his vibe.
But Friday evening, while my phone wouldn’t stop vibrating, I got a text from him: “It doesn’t seem right, does it?”
The news of Chadwick Boseman’s surprising death after a four-year private battle with colon cancer had just gobsmacked the world. And no, it didn’t seem right — it still doesn’t. It felt like someone was playing a cruel joke (I checked the AP account multiple times to make sure it was a legit account). But he meant that it’s not fair.
