The Sinking of the Laconia
Kieran Kinsella
August will be an exciting month for fans of British TV as Acorn Media are set to release the critically acclaimed BBC Two production of The Sinking of the Laconia. The drama is based upon real events that occurred during World War II when a German U-boat torpedoed a British ship that was transporting civilians and Italian POWs off the coast of Africa. Having initially mistaken the Laconia for a military vessel, the commander of the U-boat was mortified to discover that he had in fact sunk a civilian boat. Breaking with orders from high command, the German commander began orchestrating a massive rescue operation designed to get the survivors to the relative safety of the West African shoreline. The real-life drama doesn’t end there but I don’t want to give the whole plot away so you’ll just have to...

The big finale of "American Idol"'s 11th season is finally upon us this week, and we noticed that this year's two finalists look as cut out for the camera as they do for the stage (hello Phillip Phillips!).
It certainly doesn't hurt that so many "Idol" alums before them have successfully launched from the show's giant platform into the world of film.
In fact, there have been a lot of reality stars in general who've made a name in the movie scene. Here are our top 15.
15. Carrie Underwood, 'American Idol'
Credits: "Soul Surfer"
For "Idol" Season 4 winner Carrie Underwood, five Grammys, dozens of other accolades, four successful albums, and pretty hair just wasn't enough. She first gave her thespian itch a scratch on the small screen in 2010 with guest stints on "Sesame Street" and "How I Met Your Mother" before going full-blown Hollywood for 2011's "Soul Surfer,...

On October 31st 2003, rising teen surf star Bethany Hamilton was out on the water with her close friend Alana Blanchard when their Hawaiian idyll, and her life, were shattered by a sudden attack from a tiger shark which saw her left arm severed at the shoulder. The subsequent rehabilitation of both her body and mind, and her determination to get back to her competitive surfing ways really is the stuff of movies, a tailor-made story that wraps up triumph over adversity, questions of personal faith, and a battle against a nemesis, all in a gutsy thirteen year old.
Her story is told in Soul Surfer, released in the UK today. The trouble with such an obvious cinematic exercise though is it’s easy to fall into the trap of cliché and sentimentality, which I realise is a harsh accusation to aim at a such an uplifting true story,...

If there's a great British show that you're not watching, it's Garrow's Law. The show, which premiered on the BBC in 2009, is one of Acorn Media's best titles, alongside the genius Life on Mars and Single-Handed. The series has the unique conceit of being a legal drama set in the late 18th century, and centers upon barrister William Garrow, a real historical figure who coined the term "innocent until proven guilty." The series portrays Garrow as a legal revolutionary who begins to change the way trials are held in England through his new perspective and practice of persuading juries. The second series of the show arrives on DVD from Acorn Media August 2.

Carrie Underwood says she's happy with her first acting performance on the big screen.
The country music star plays a small but pivotal role in the film Soul Surfer, the inspirational tale of shark attack survivor Bethany Hamilton.
"I'm happy with myself for the role and for the movie," Underwood said Monday night in Las Vegas where she had just wrapped up taping "Acm Presents Girls' Night Out: Superstar Women of Country." ''Am I going to win an Oscar? No. It was so much fun and the important thing is getting the story out there."
Underwood plays youth pastor Sarah Hill, a key figure in Hamilton's life and recovery after the attack.

Unlike Aron Ralston, Bethany Hamilton is actually a one-armed hero. After a shark tore off her left arm in 2003, through determination and devout faith, she got back on her surfboard and continued to compete professionally. And it wasn't a matter of let's pity the wounded warrior -- Hamilton went on to place or win in several major professional events with the use of a modified board designed by her father. Her greatest achievement isn't survival, it's that she experienced heartbreaking and life changing adversity, and through unwavering commitment to her sport and her God, she's continued to compete and to help others. Bethany Hamilton is an amazing person.
However, since the accident, they've parlayed her devotion into a marketing campaign for Jesus. Bethany wrote a memoir of the incident, Soul Surfer, with the help of two other folks, which soon became a special book of Soul Surfer devotionals and even a Soul Surfer bible.

Analysts are calling for this one to open at $10 million or less, but I think they have it wrong. It’s going to open bigger than that. Nothing crazy like ‘#1 at the box office’, but it won’t be dismissed as just a teen faith based story of hope – it arguably has all the elements the teen, tween and beyond crowd is looking for; a haunting sense of doom as you inevitably witness the shark bite that takes her arm for their horror craving. For the sexual appeal side, there is a plethora of incredibly gorgeous surfing hotties (both male and female) led by the heroine of the film although her nemesis in the film is a really close second. For the religious side there is definitely a message of faith (albeit carried by another character). And finally for the romance side there’s a playful and endearing courting. All...

Making your big screen debut is, no doubt, a nerve-wracking experience. Doing it while playing a real-life person who just so happens to be hanging around the set would be enough to rattle even the most seasoned superstar.
That was exactly the case for Carrie Underwood, who, despite being the champ on her season of "American Idol" and making a cameo last season on "How I Met Your Mother," had her trepidations about getting in front of the camera for her role in the upcoming inspirational biopic "Soul Surfer."
In it, the Grammy-winning country singer plays Sarah Hill, a youth counselor who befriended and guided Bethany Hamilton (AnnaSophia Robb), a teen surfer who tragically lost her arm during a shark attack in 2003.
In this Exclusive behind-the-scenes look at "Soul Surfer," Underwood discusses how she prepared for her big-screen debut and why she and her co-stars wanted to do Hamilton's story justice.

A closer look at Carrie Underwood as youth leader Sarah Hill in "Soul Surfer" has come out in the form of a brand new clip. When Bethany and her friends gather together for a Rad nite, Sarah gives an understanding to the youth group why sometimes they need to change their perspective about God's plan.
Aside from the Carrie-featuring clip, another snippet has also been made available for viewing pleasure. It takes the focus on Bethany and her father, portrayed by AnnaSophia Robb and Dennis Quaid. While she still lays in her hospital bed, her father assures her that she will surf again soon, telling her that she can do anything.
Based on the true story, "Soul Surfer" follows surfer Bethany Hamilton as she overcomes the odds of becoming a champion after losing an arm in a shark attack at age 13. Helen Hunt is in supporting role as Bethany's mother.

Sometimes the most exciting settings of television lie not in the future, but in the past.
You hardly see the eighteenth century portrayed on television anymore. That's a shame, because some of history's most exciting times happened in that time period. Many of these events have been overshadowed by the importance of the American revolution, but perhaps one figure that was overlooked was William Garrow, a barrister who changed the face of the British legal system permanently.
That's where Garrow's Law comes in. The British series, which just saw the release of its first series on U.S. DVD Tuesday, is certainly one of the most engrossing shows I've gotten from Acorn Media. The four hour-long episodes are quite engrossing, both in the trials themselves and the fascinatingly hot-headed Garrow, who is a genius when he's not shooting himself in the foot.
The supporting cast are all brilliant as well...

When we first heard that Carrie Underwood was going to be making her movie debut playing church youth counselor Sarah Hill in Soul Surfer, we have to admit we were a wee bit skeptical. But after seeing this new trailer for the film about 19-year-old Bethany Hamilton (played by AnnaSophia Robb), who lost her arm in a shark attack off the coast of Hawaii, we're, well, still a wee bit skeptical. Although, in Carrie's defense, that's only because she pops up oh-so-briefly and is heard delivering just one line (albeit a pretty heartfelt one) throughout the entire clip above. The film itself, though, does look pretty well done, in particular, AnnaSophia's arm. Or, should we say, lack thereof.

Carrie Underwood joins the likes of Helen Hunt, Dennis Quaid and young up-and-comer AnnaSophia Robb for her big screen debut in "Soul Surfer."
Based on the true story of Bethany Hamilton -- the 13-year-old who lost her left arm in a shark attack -- "Soul Surfer" plays out her struggle to defy the odds and return to surfing after her tragic accident.
Underwood portrays Sarah Hill, the youth counselor who has been credited with helping Bethany get back on her board.
We aren't expecting there to be much focus on the "American Idol" winner's vocals in the film, so we should get a good taste of Underwood's acting chops when it hits theaters April 8th.
Do you think she has what it takes to cross over into film, or should she stick to singing?...
