“Tenzing,” a film about the true story of Sherpa Tenzing Norgay’s 1953 trek to the summit of Mount Everest alongside Edmund Hillary, has been snapped up by Apple Original Films.
Casting is underway for Tenzing while “Loki” star Tom Hiddleston is set to play New Zealand mountaineer Hillary.
Willem Dafoe (“Eternity’s Gate”) is expected to star as English expedition leader Colonel John Hunt.
Apple acquired the rights the project in what was described as a “competitive situation” as Cannes kicked off. It is one of the first major deals to come out of the market as it goes into Day 3.
“Tibetan born Tenzing Norgay, alongside New Zealand mountaineer Edmund Hillary, both outsiders on a British Expedition, defied insurmountable odds to achieve what was once thought impossible, reaching the summit of the world’s tallest mountain, Mount Everest,” reads the logline. “After six previous attempts, Tenzing risked everything for one final venture.

Scott Waugh whose credits include “Act of Valor” and the upcoming “The Expendables 4,” is attached to direct the upcoming documentary “Escape to Atlantis,” based on the findings of Seattle native Dr. Jason Rubin who has used deductive reasoning, the writings of philosopher Plato and cutting-edge satellite sonar imagery to pinpoint the location of the fabled lost island of Atlantis.
Said Waugh: “Every story, whether fact or fable, has a character we believe in and hope they prevail. Wouldn’t it be great to be part of a story where our protagonist wins and redefines the world’s truth?” “If Dr. Rubin has found Atlantis, not only does he continually save lives in the ER room, but he will have risen the dead of those lost in Plato’s fable and will redefine our history. "It's not the mountain we conquer, but ourselves." –Sir Edmund Hillary. Mountains are mystical, magical, and extraordinary. Some people are born in the mountains, and they never leave, unable to step away from them. Some people are born in the mountains, and leave to find their place elsewhere, yet always longing to return. Those who are drawn to their poetic majesty never forget their grandeur and immensity no matter where they are on this planet. One of the best films from the 2022 Cannes Film Festival so far is The Eight Mountains, an Italian feature (originally Le Otto Montagne) co-directed by Belgian filmmakers Felix van Groeningen and Charlotte Vandermeersch. It's another breathtaking, slow burn story about men and mountains. It takes its time, following boys growing into men as two friends navigate the cliffs, passages, and snowy peaks of their lives. This extensive two-and-a-half-hour film is indeed a poetic and moving...

Many have heard the names Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay, the mountaineers from New Zealand and Nepal who in 1953 were the first men to summit Mt. Everest. Climbing enthusiasts will have heard about Japan’s Junko Tabei, who was the first woman to reach the highest point on Earth in 1975.
But less familiar is the remarkable story of trailblazer Pasang Lhamu Sherpa, the first Nepalese woman to summit Everest. Her long journey to the mountaintop in 1993, which included protracted battles against gender discrimination, racism, and political opposition from within her own nation, is the subject of the new documentary “Pasang: In the Shadow of Everest.”
The film’s exclusive trailer can be watched above. Directed by first-time feature documentarian Nancy Svendsen (whose own brother-in-law is related to Pasang), the movie will make its world premiere at the Santa Barbara Film Festival on March 3.

Adapted from Baku Yumemakura’s mid-‘90s manga series of the same name, Patrick Imbert’s “The Summit of the Gods” might reflect the awed and glassy tone of recent French animation (the similarly ethereal “I Lost My Body” comes to mind), but its most formative influence is fittingly Japanese: Studio Ghibli.
You might sense it in the structure of Imbet, Magali Pouzol, and Jean-Charles Ostorero’s screenplay, which unfolds through a series of nested memories à la Isao Takahata’s “Only Yesterday” — or “Citizen Kane.” More specific is how this film rustles with the same melancholic beauty that swirls through every frame of Hayao Miyazaki’s magnum opus “The Wind Rises.” Where that melodrama weighed the creative spirit against its most awful cost, this adventure story reaches even higher in its bid to understand why some men are compelled to climb the world’s tallest mountain and/or die trying.

Sir Edmund Hillary’s family will ascend the mountain that made their grandfather a household name in a new documentary being launched in Cannes.
Directed by Ben Webster, one of the world’s top expedition leaders, “Everest: Legacy” is currently in pre-production and will be shopped to buyers by New York-headquartered documentary sales firm Cargo Film & Releasing, which has picked up world rights.
The film follows Hillary’s son Peter and his grandchildren, along with the world’s best climbing Sherpa, Tendi, on an epic family climb of Everest next spring. Along the journey, the film will highlight the changes on Everest — which has become dangerously congested over the years with a high traffic of eager climbers — in contrast to when it was first climbed by Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay in May 1953.

Given the subject matter of Jen Peedom’s first narrative feature, it is somewhat fitting the project has been included in Higher Ground’s production slate.

Luke Davies (Lion) wrote the script based on the book Tenzing: Hero of Everest by Ed Douglas.
Peedom, who operates Stranger Than Fiction Films alongside Jo-anne McGowan, will produce with Davies alongside Higher Ground Productions. David Michôd (The King) and Norbu Tenzing Norgay, who is Tenzing Norgay’s eldest son, will executive produce.
The director, whose previous credits include documentaries Sherpa and Mountain, has known Tenzing’s family since 2003, and has been working on working on the feature about his life since 2016.

Sometimes a movie is worth waiting for. If you know anything about the production of motion pictures you may know that it can take years, sometimes decades, to get a film made. One such Hollywood story was the movie Jacob’s Ladder, the script for which became legendary as having been read by almost every producer, director and actor who works in the production of movies. When it finally did get made, well, if you’ve seen it, you probably know its pretty damn good.
In the 1980s I read Robyn Davidson’s book Tracks about her crossing the Australian Outback with camels starting at Alice Springs, the largest town in the outback. The journey was almost 2000 miles and was covered by a photographer from National Geographic, at Robyn Davidson’s request.
Her book was fascinating, and at the time,( this was in the 1980s,) I thought it would make a great movie.

The tension on Mount Everest had been building for years. Rich Westerners pay a fortune to climb the world’s highest peak, but the Sherpas — a Nepalese ethnic minority who live in the shadow of the mountain — do most of the hardest and most dangerous work paving the path for the adventure climbers, and are paid little and get next to no recognition for achieving the same high-altitude feats. There have been literal traffic jams — of foot traffic, that is — on the mountain in recent years as the experience has drawn more and more outsiders. In 2013 it all came to actual fisticuffs between the Sherpas and Westerners on Everest.

On May 29th,1953, Nepalese guide Tenzing Norgay brought New Zealand philanthropist mountaineer Edmund Hillary to the summit of Mount Everest. The very idea of crawling to the top of the highest mountain on earth, with its punishing temperatures and near lack of oxygen, captured the imagination of the planet. Hillary (and expedition leader John Hunt) were both knighted. Their smiling, deferent, ethnic companion was bestowed with a lesser honour, the George Medal, which nevertheless made him the most famous man from Nepal in the world. The significance of this, however, a legacy which has outlasted all three of these men, is that Norgay's ethnicity -- he is from the Sherpa clan -- ceased to be the name of a people, and thereon became a global brand...

I love this documentary. It's beautifully made, with so much breathtaking and remarkable footage. Sherpa, directed by Jennifer Peedom, is a doc about the sherpas of Nepal. Most people have heard of them (the most famous being Tenzing Norgay, who was first to reach the summit of Everest with Sir Edmund Hillary), maybe seen a few photos, but they're rarely seen in movies - even ones about climbing Everest. But in reality the sherpas do all of the work, carrying massive loads of supplies up/down the mountain while western "clients" sit in heated tents waiting for their trek upwards. This documentary about the sherpas is one of the best documentaries I have ever seen, and I genuinely mean that. It's an exhilarating and moving experience. What makes Sherpa such an extraordinary doc is Peedom's luck (if it can be called that) in being at the right place and the right time.

Exclusive: Jennifer Peedom, whose stirring documentary Sherpa receives its international premiere at Telluride on Friday night, has revealed her upcoming plans.
The Australian high-altitude director has earned plaudits for her chronicle of the ethnic Nepali mountain guides and their politicisation following dramatic and fatal events on Everest in the past few years.
And now Peedom plans to continue to convey her love for the sherpas with a biopic about arguably the most famous of them all, Tenzing Norgay.
The Indian and Nepali sherpa earned worldwide renown when he accompanied Edmund Hillary on the world’s first successful ascent of Everest in May 1953.
Peedom, who has travelled to the Himalayas on various projects for close to a decade and climbed most of the way to the summit as a high-altitude camera operator, also directed the documentary Miracle On Everest, among others.
She is currently producing Mountain with the Australian Chamber Orchestra prior to tacking the Norgay biopic.

Australian film-maker Jennifer Peedom’s moving study of Sherpa culture might be the most majestic-looking industrial dispute documentary ever made
In the 1950s, Tenzing Norgay, who along with New Zealand mountaineer Edmund Hillary became the first person known to have reached the summit of Mount Everest, popularised the stereotypical image of Sherpa people as smiling, tranquil, can-do workers happy to escort foreigners across precipitous native land.
Australian director Jennifer Peedom set out to make a documentary capturing a detailed picture of people who, as she remarked at the world premiere of her film Sherpa at the Sydney film festival, are often left on the cutting room floor in depictions of voyages to the top of the earth’s highest mountain.

Sir Edmund Hillary's conquest of Mount Everest with Sherpa Tenzing Norgay suggests a different era entirely, one in which the map still had soft edges and major scientific discovery still conferred some measure of celebrity. Small wonder, then that filmmakers Leanne Pooley and Matthew Metcalfe would want to retell that story (even if they have to give it a Mountain Dew-approved extreme sports title) and evoke the reverence that the accomplishment merits. Beyond The Edge is not lacking for reverence, but as with so many "great men" biopics, the presentation is considerably less exciting than the subject matter.

To mark the release of Beyond the Edge on 14th July, we’ve been given 3 copies to give away on DVD.
In 1953, the ascent of Everest remained the last of Earth’s great challenges. Standing at over 29,000ft, the world’s highest mountain posed a fearsome challenge and had already claimed thirteen lives in previous expeditions. Faced with treacherous winds, sub-zero temperatures and battling altitude sickness, the British expedition team members Sir Edmund Hillary, a modest beekeeper from Auckland, and Tenzing Norgay, an experienced mountain Sherpa, finally achieved the impossible and became the first men to stand atop Everest. News of their conquest was announced on June 2 1953 as Queen Elizabeth II prepared for her Coronation.
Both a classic triumph of the underdog story and a gripping, cinematic experience, Beyond The Edge is a tale of human endurance, tenacity and courage in the face of overwhelming odds. Following its world premiere at Toronto,...

If you're in one of those places right now that's getting beaten down with the summer heat, the upcoming documentary "Beyond The Edge" might be a good visual cool-down. It will take you to the chilly heights of Mount Everest, all in 3D, and telling you the true story of one of the greatest expeditions to one of the world's most notorious peaks. In 1953, Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay set out to conquer the 29,000 foot world wonder in order to become the first men to put their feet on the top of Everest. And director Leanne Pooley re-enacts this tale, mixing contemporary and archival footage, recordings, vintage interviews and much more, to present a portrait of the historic climb. And as you'll see in this exclusive clip, Hillary and Norgay's journey was a treacherous one, with risks and dangers facing them almost every step of the way. "Beyond The Edge" opens on Friday,...

We're used to sweeping vistas of Everest, crevasses blue at the bottom with chill and shadow. If it would have been a surprise at the beginning of Beyond the Edge for the narrator to announce that “above 20,000 feet [on Everest's highest slope] is what we call the death zone, because you are slowly dying,” then by the time he does, two-thirds of the way through Leanne Pooley's documentary about Sir Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay's 1953 ascent, it is no longer. What's surprising is the miniscule, the mundane—and the relationship between the two men. Before he became famous as a mountaineer, Hillary was a beekeeper, explorer and Rnzaf navigator. Like any other well-to-do post-war New Zealander, he spent a great deal of time in twill and well-man...

This is the @puremovies review of Beyond The Edge, directed by Leanne Pooley and starring Chad Moffitt. The latest cinematic retelling of Colonel John Hunt's successful 1953 expedition is an ambitious combination of period recordings, dramatic staged scenes from the Southern Alps, new footage from mountaineer-cameraman Mark Whetu's recent journey to the top, with logistical and geographic animations throughout. Unfortunately the consequence is an unsettling mutant snowscape, which lacks the ability to support enough insightful depth to create any enduring pertinence. This time-worn story is retold without meaningful probing, fresh technical disclosure and with the warmth to match the mountain itself. Sir Edmund Hillary, formidable Kiwi beekeeper-cum-superhero, is played by the largely silent (and large - 192cm) Chad Moffitt. While it's quite gratifying to watch him stride across the snow to the unbridled feist of the soundtrack, it doesn't fill the cavernous personality-shaped lacuna which stretches the length of the film.

Queen Elizabeth has historic new wheels. The beloved British monarch, 88, will ride to the state opening of parliament in her Diamond Jubilee stagecoach that has been called a "living time capsule," made with wood taken from the Tower of London, Henry VII's warship, Sir Isaac Newton's apple tree and the door of 10 Downing Street, the U.K.'s The Mirror reports. The new carriage, created over the course of a decade by Australian Jim Frecklington from his team's workshop in Sydney, is only the second one built for the royal family in 100 years. Beyond The Edge is a tale of insurmountable odds. As a documentary recounting the 1953 expedition to the tip of Mount Everest, which saw Edmund Hillary and Nepalese Tenzing Norgay become the first to reach its summit, it takes quotes collected from the years since the journey and blends them with dramatic reconstructions of key points in their story. Reenactment has almost become an artform in its own right within the documentary format; in showing us something constructed as artifice, we’re given a rare chance to glean the truth. But it’s not as old as you’d think. So where did the trend originate from? How has it impacted how we make and – more importantly – watch documentaries?
The popularisation of reenactment can easily be traced back to 1988, when Errol Morris’ The Thin Blue Line first wowed audiences and critics. The film revisited a murder case from 1976, in which Randall Adams...

★★☆☆☆The most recent in a spate of mountaineering documentaries that have attempted to traverse the UK theatrical and home entertainment market of late (from the compelling The Epic of Everest to the misconceived The Summit), Beyond the Edge (2013) is the first to utilise 3D stereoscopy for its storytelling needs. An uneven and frustratingly assembled reconstruction of Sir Edmund Hillary's historic 1953 Everest climb, Kiwi director Leanne Pooley demonstrates plenty of reverence for her subject and his Nepalese Sherpa companion Tenzing Norgay, but does become something of a laborious trek for anyone not enraptured by Everest or its collection of intrepid would-be conquerors.

Despite hinting at an Anglo-centric core, it soon becomes apparent that Beyond The Edge is a documentary-film about Edmund Hillary’s achievements as a mountaineer rather than Britain’s post-war achievements as an intrepid, all-conquering nation. The British Colony’s ‘last hurrah’ – as it was contemporaneously touted – was fulfilled by Kiwi and a Nepalese Sherpa.
Comprising stock footage, voice over work and cinematic scenes that feature silent actors, this documentary-cum-drama finds its pace as the expedition moves into its more critical stages. Of course, the higher Hillary (Chad Moffitt) and Tenzing (Sonam Sherpa) climbed, the less stock footage there was.
This is perhaps the film’s biggest downfall. While the balance between the old, grainy footage and the gleaming, high-definition shots was neat towards the start, it invariably swayed towards the contemporary as we reached the summit, and while this could have been an effective visual device, heightening the tension...

Sixty years ago, the 29,000-foot peak remained one of Earth’s greatest unconquered landmarks and had already claimed thirteen lives in previous ascent attempts. But after methodical team selection and training methods, British expedition member Edmund Hillary, a 33-year-old beekeeper, and brave mountain Sherpa Tenzing Norgay became partners on a dangerous challenge against the elements and fear.
Despite risking their lives with nascent technology and the ever-increasing threat of altitude sickness, the pair became the first men ever to stand atop the great peak, with their conquest announced in June 1953, in the days preceding the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II.
The most successful documentary of all time in New Zealand, it’s not just a visually splendid piece but also a stirring meditation on human endurance, bravery and the indomitable will of nature.

An avalanche swept down a climbing route on Mount Everest early Friday, killing at least 12 Nepalese guides and leaving three missing in the deadliest disaster on the world's highest peak. The Sherpa guides had gone early in the morning to fix ropes for other climbers when the avalanche hit just them below Camp 2 at about 6:30 a.m., Nepal Tourism Ministry official Krishna Lamsal said from the base camp where he is monitoring rescue efforts. Rescue workers pulled out 12 bodies from under mounds of snow and ice and were searching for the three missing guides, Lamsal said. Two Sherpas who...

Both Shane and I were invited on board for the ride… We are thrilled to be able to work together again. It’s not every day someone pays you to hang out with family.”
