20 years ago, Saw made an indelible impact on the horror genre. Not only did it usher in the so-called “torture porn” subgenre that would become synonymous with the aughts, but it also launched the career of filmmaker James Wan, who has firmly cemented his place among the masters of horror with follow-ups like The Conjuring and Insidious.
In the two decades since, the lucrative franchise has spawned nine sequels — 2005’s Saw II, 2006’s Saw III, 2007’s Saw IV, 2008’s Saw V, 2009’s Saw VI, 2010’s Saw: The Final Chapter, 2017’s Jigsaw, 2021’s Spiral: From the Book of Saw, and 2023’s Saw X — with a worldwide box office total of over $1 billion.
Despite being often maligned by detractors for its mindless sadism, fans are just as much invested in the series’ soap opera-esque melodrama as the innovative death traps. Formulaic though the general plots may be, the non-linear storyline is deceptively...

There are several films in Hollywood's history that started their lives as original concepts, but were later incorporated into extant franchises. Briefly, some of the more famous examples include John McTiernan's "Die Hard With a Vengeance," which started as a thriller sans John McClane called "Simon Says." That film was meant to star Brandon Lee but was reworked after his death. Additionally, "Ocean's Twelve" was once meant to be a John Woo film about only two -- and not twelve -- rival thieves, but was repopulated to serve as a sequel to Steven Soderbergh's hit heist movie. And there is, of course, Russell Mulcahy's baffling sequel "Highlander 2: The Quickening," which, thanks to a quick repurposing of an original script, transformed a tale of magical immortals into a bizarre dystopian sci-fi film set in the future.
The same is true of Darren Lynn Bousman's 2005 sequel "Saw II,...

After The Blair Witch Project came along in 1999, it feels like the independent horror boom of the 2000s was almost a direct result of that film’s success. Throughout this decade, we saw so many writers, directors, and other industry creatives get the opportunity to establish themselves and chart their course in Hollywood, and so many of those folks are still continuing to have a huge impact on what’s going on in the genre world these days as well.
The start of the new millennium proved to be an interesting time for horror, but especially indie horror. So many may not realize it, but American Psycho was initially an indie project that went through years and years of development before Lionsgate picked up the rights to Bret Easton Ellis’ book and moved forward on the project with Mary Harron at the helm. Photo: 'Saw'/ The First Piece to the Jigsaw Puzzle If you consider yourself a fan of the horror genre, you’ve most likely heard of Australian filmmaker James Wan. He is probably most well known for his work within ‘The Conjuring’ universe as well as directing the first two ‘Insidious’ films. Of course now Wan has gone on to direct even larger projects such as ‘Furious 7’ and 2018’s ‘Aquaman’; but where did Wan’s success originate? Let’s flashback to 2003 when he and partner Leigh Whannell created the blueprint to what now is one of the largest horror franchises in history. Wan and Whannell met as aspiring filmmakers at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology’s prestigious Media Arts course. The two young men, around 25/26 at the time, co-created the script to ‘Saw’ and took a promising scene from that script to shoot as a seven-minute short...

Well, Chris Rock’s Saw movie just got a hell of a lot more interesting! I’ve been curious about this new Saw film, but not really that excited about it… until this big piece of casting news was announced.
Lionsgate has announced that the film will star Samuel L. Jackson along side Chris Rock, Max Minghella, and Marisol Nichols. That’s a very surprising cast, and a cast that I can get behind! We knew that the story for the film came from Rock and that he would be producing it, but until now, we didn’t know he would be starring in it as well.
We also have some new details to share with you! Chris Rock will take on the role of a police detective investigating a series of grizzly crimes and Jackson will portray Rock’s father. Max Minghella will play William Schenk, Rock’s partner...

The fact that there is another Saw movie being made is crazy. What takes it to an even crazier level is that the new film is being developed by Chris Rock! That’s the last thing I expected to see!
Well, the film project is moving forward quickly and it’s going to start shooting next week. Director Darren Bousman shared the following on Twitter:
Start shooting the new Saw film in just a few days. Something I never thought I be typing again! Gotta be honest. No one is ready for the insanity about to bleed out on screen!

“No one is ready for the insanity about to bleed out on screen!” What is this movie going to give us that is different from any of the other Saw films that have come before? All I can see from the franchise is more of the same.

Chris Rock is teaming up with Lionsgate to develop a Saw spinoff film. I’ve gotta say, this is quite a surprise! I would have never ever thought that Chris Rock would ever be involved with the Saw franchise! Hell, I thought the Saw franchise was dead! But he is, and here what he had to say in a statement:
“I’ve been a fan of ‘Saw’ since the first film in 2004. I am excited by the opportunity to take this to a really intense and twisted new place.”
As you all know, the franchise revolves around the character John Kramer, a.k.a. Jigsaw, who kidnaps and forces victims into insane and deadly situations that test their will to live. Joe Drake, chairman of Lionsgate’s Motion Picture Group, made the announcement teasing what we can expect:

Chris Rock and Lionsgate are collaborating on a “Saw” spinoff.
“I’ve been a fan of ‘Saw’ since the first film in 2004,” Rock said. “I am excited by the opportunity to take this to a really intense and twisted new place.”
The franchise revolves around the fictional character John Kramer, also called the “Jigsaw Killer” or “Jigsaw,” who traps victims in situations that test their will to live. Tobin Bell has portrayed Jigsaw in all eight films. The low-cost titles have been highly profitable for Lionsgate, grossing nearly $1 billion worldwide. Mark Burg, Oren Koules and Gregg Hoffman produced all the “Saw” movies.
Joe Drake, chairman of Lionsgate’s Motion Picture Group, made the announcement on Thursday. The new movie will be released on Oct. 23, 2020.

John Kramer's influence is far reaching and his desire to play deadly games seemingly never ceases, so it's fitting, then, that Lionsgate has officially revealed the title of the next Saw film to be Jigsaw.
Scheduled for an October 27th, 2017 release, Jigsaw is directed by Michael and Peter Spierig (Predestination, Daybreakers, Undead) from a screenplay by Josh Stolberg and Pete Goldfinger (who previously worked on the screenplays for Piranha 3D and Sorority Row). The franchise's producers Mark Burg, Gregg Hoffman, and Oren Koules are all returning for Jigsaw.
A sequel of sorts that's unsurprisingly rated R, Jigsaw is set in the cinematic world created by James Wan and Leigh Whannell, which kicked off with the 2003 short film Saw, followed by a feature film version of the same name that made a big impact on the modern horror scene and was continued in six sequels.
The cast of Jigsaw includes Mandela Van Peebles, Laura Vandervoort, Hannah Anderson, and Brittany Allen, with Tobin Bell potentially returning to reprise his role as John Kramer, aka Jigsaw.
We'll be sure to keep Daily Dead readers updated as more details are revealed. In the meantime, let us know what you hope to see in Jigsaw, and check out the teaser image shared on the official Saw Facebook page below:

“Live or die. Make your choice.” Jigsaw challenged his victims to be better people… if they survived his twisted games. "Could this really be what Buttercup wished for all along?!"
I remember this interaction quite vividly, even though it's now been 10 years since it happened:
I was 21. I was in the car with a couple of friends, on our way into the city to catch a movie. The phone rings. It's my mother.
"Hey, ma."
"Hey. What're you up to?"
"Me, Max, and Joel are heading into the city to see Saw."
(Pause)
"What?" she asks.
(Pause)
I take a moment to figure out what could be confusing about my last sentence, then it hits me.
"No, ma. We're going to see a movie named 'Saw.' We're not on our way to play on that thing in a playground."
Ah, yes. It's been 10 years since Saw sliced its way into theaters and became an annual event for horror fans to look forward to every Halloween. The series would have...

Saw, the original film that kicked off a franchise that spanned several films, is about to turn 10 years old. In honor of the film's 10th anniversary, Lionsgate is bringing the film back to theaters for a limited time this Halloween season for fans to enjoy and squirm about all over again. Come inside for all the details!
I'm not a big horror movie fan, and I'm even less of a torture movie fan. I just don't have the patience for it, though I recognize the importance the first Saw film has had on the genre in general. So I'll probably be skipping out on it's theatrical re-release, but that doesn't mean you have to!

Exclusive: Evolution Entertainment partners Mark Burg and Oren Koules are splitting after 12 years. Burg has purchased the 50% of the management/production company owned by Koules. Burg has reconstituted the company and named former CAA agent-turned-producer Michael Menchel its new president. This brings to an end a partnership that achieved the dream of every boutique management/production company. When these guys got through Evolution's Gregg Hoffman the script for Saw from Leigh Whannell and James Wan, they put themselves at risk personally to come up with the money to buy it and to cover the $1.2 million budget themselves. They made a licensing deal with Lionsgate but were left owning a film that grossed $103 million worldwide. They continued in that fashion on six sequels, most of which were low budget, with the last costing around $20 million. The cumulative worldwide gross of the series reached $870 million, and Burg and Koules made a fortune.

Welcome back to the last installment of Dread Central’s look back at the 25 milestones that shaped the landscape of independent horror filmmaking over the last 100 years. I apologize for the delay on the last five milestones as I had no idea just how busy I’d be while in Austin covering the South by Southwest Film Festival (which also champions the independent spirit of filmmaking most of the time) so I am glad to be back now and have the opportunity to pay homage to these last five moments in indie horror history.
We’ve already celebrated 20 milestones through 1987, and today we start in 1999 with one of the most innovative independent modern horror films that not only acted as a game changer in the horror genre but also was one of the first movies to effectively use the Internet as a marketing tool.

Our look back at the Saw franchise continues, with the ultra-violent franchise instalments Saw III and Saw IV…
This article contains spoilers.
Is it serendipity or just convenient division that brings together Saw III and Saw IV in the second part of this retrospective series? Quite aside from being many things to fans of the series, the midpoint, the fulcrum or the point where it all went wrong, they're two films that take place simultaneously with each other in the series' timeline.
The story so far, as we discovered yesterday, brings us to the beginning of Saw III with Amanda abducting Dr. Lynn Denlon (Bahar Soomekh). Jigsaw's condition is deteriorating, and he must stay the course and keep hold of his mortal coil until the conclusion of his latest game. Bereaved father Jeff (Angus Macfadyen) is the subject, going through a series of rooms and passing judgement on different victims.

Two new images have been released for the seventh installment in the long running Saw franchise, Saw 3D. The film, which is being billed (at the moment at least) as the last in the torture-porn horror series hits cinemas worldwide this Friday and stars Tobin Bell, Costas Mandylor, Betsy Russell, Sean Patrick Flannery and Cary Elwes.
The images themselves don’t really tell you much, but they’re pretty crisp and come courtesy of Dread Central. I’ll be watching the film myself as is tradition for my brother’s birthday, so I’m hoping that with the 3D at least, we’ll be in for some cheap and cheerful entertainment!
Check out both new images below:

Lionsgate are really pushing the movie promo boat out with a rather brilliant and very arty Saw 3D poster commissioned from collage artist Jason Mercer. We’ve already had one great one-sheet now check this out.
The poster was revealed on Facebook and not unleashed until three million people ‘liked’ the Saw 3D page. Social media really is the way of the future in film marketing, no?
Either way, it’s a very cool, slightly disturbing image in that it invokes a slightly religious notion with its hooded portrait shot. Saw 3D promises to be a fitting swan song with the return of Dr. Gordon (Cary Elwes) himself!
Saw 3D will open close to Halloween and will do mortal combat with Paranormal Activity 2 at the box office. Let’s face it, both will be victors. Plus Paranormal 2 comes out a week before on 22nd October. Plenty of time to do some first week business.

Lionsgate has launched an innovative Facebook application which incentivizes Saw fans to share their anticipation for the final Saw film on Facebook and Twitter: Once Saw's more than 3,000,000 Facebook and Twitter fans share their excitement of the series enough times, a new, special edition print created by famed celebrity artist Jason Mecier will be revealed exclusively to the Saw Facebook community. Holy cow this is a great new poster for the last instalment of Lionsgate’s killer franchise Saw 3D. It’s worth bearing in mind this is probably the last poster we’ll see from this series, so it’s good to see they’ve thought about it!
Saw 3D is the promised gory climax to a series that spawned the torture porn sub-genre. Director Kevin Greutert returns to call “splaction!”
Lionsgate’s gory box office heavyweight is going up against another heavyweight in the form of Paranormal Activity 2 this Halloween. Who will be the victor? The public will decide.

I think Saw 3D holds the record for most motion posters ever created for a single movie. Here it is the grand finale! This is the final poster you will ever see for a Saw film. Producers have confirmed that Saw 3D will in fact be the very last Saw film ever made, until they decide to reboot the whole franchise six months later.
Check out the motion poster below and let us know what you think! Are you happy the Saw franchise is coming to a close? I hope they go out with a bang. Unfortunatley it looks like the 3D element of the film is going to kill it for me. I guess we'll just have to wait and see!

The first full theatrical trailer has been released for Saw 3D and I have to say, it’s pretty damn good! Yes, when it comes to the Saw series I sit on the cynical side of the fence, believing it should have been left at two, or three movies at best, and I still believe that now, but that trailer even got me wanting to line up to experience the game in 3D!
Saw 3D (or Saw VII as it’s otherwise known) is largely believed to be the last installment in the franchise. The series began with Saw in 2004, a revolutionary whodunnit which practically launched the modern-day Torture Porn movement. The story was intricately put together and the twists were perfectly staged. Since then each sequel has been shoehorned into the story to form a larger “puzzle” one which has pretty much been made up as they went along and that,...

Released over the past week were the first three images from Lionsgate's Saw 3D, now we've got beautiful, clean, hi-res looks at the images from the seventh and (supposedly) final film in the franchise arriving in theaters October 29. It'll be taking on Wes Craven's post-converted My Soul to Take, which I expect to move some time soon. By moving a week Saw 3D will also avoid Paranormal Activity 2 and give them a good chance at knocking it off the #1 spot. The first theatrical feature to be shot exclusively on the cutting-edge Si-3D digital camera system, Saw VII 3-D brings the horrifying games of Jigsaw to life like never before. The film stars Tobin Bell, Cary Elwes, Costas Mandylor, Betsy Russell and Sean Patrick Flannery. Saw VII is directed by Kevin Greutert, produced by Oren Koules, Mark Burg and Gregg Hoffman. One of the most shocking things about the Saw 3D footage shown at Comic-Con was that it took place outside. While doing their thing at San Diego's big dance, director Kevin Greutert and star Tobin Bell talked a little bit about going public.
"We had 400 extras and it started to rain," says Greutert. "It was a difficult shoot, but it was so fun. It's just so different than the rest of Saw. We wanted to go way over the top and do something very exciting."
"No trap has ever had spectators. The slightest change in dynamic, going outside, makes you go 'Wow!' - that's on a whole new level in a certain way, it certainly changes the perspective," says Tobin Bell of the film's opening moments.
According to Greutert the film's opening won't be the last we see of the world outside as there are quite a few exterior scenes in the film,...

Opponents of torture porn, it's time to give a little credit where credit is due. In a small ceremony without much pomp and circumstantial evidence, the Saw Franchise and its producers accepted an official plaque from the Giuness Book of World Records for becoming the single most successful horror series of all time.
The award came during a small panel held by producers Mark Burg and Gregg Hoffman, Saw VII 3D driector Kevin Greutert and Jigsaw himself, Tobin Bell. To date, the Saw films have accumulated over 730 million in worldwide boxoffice gross, and sold 30 million plus dvd units. For a genre that spawns copy cats and straight-to-dvd sequels, it is an impressive feat.
"The Saw films are pervasive in cuture now," said Bell. "We've got everything from an annual blood drive to a famous Sopranos reference."

Saw and Saw II producer Gregg Hoffman died suddenly on Sunday morning at the age of 42. The Phoenix-native was admitted to Hollywood Presbyterian Hospital overnight after complaining of neck pain. Lions Gate Entertainment, who distributed his latest films, issued a statement on Monday, declaring he had died of natural causes. However, an autopsy is pending. Hoffman's tragic death comes less than two months after Saw II hit the top spot in the US box office, grossing $85 million since its October opening. Oren Koules, one of Hoffman's partners at Twisted Pictures, says, "He never put himself in front of anybody. He never did anything for the ego - everything he did was for the betterment of the movie." The producer is survived by his widow Lucienne, their children Jared and Luke, mother Stephanie and sister Tracy. A memorial service has been scheduled for Thursday at Mount Sinai Memorial Park.
