Criterion gives this classic its first exposure on Region A Blu-ray! A new 4K remaster puts the story of a guy too tiny to escape from his own cellar in its very best light — Scott Carey’s combat with the spider is still a scary delight, with a newly-fixed imperfection. Criterion’s extras lean toward fan-oriented fare: Tom Weaver tops the stack with a fine commentary and we get good input from Ben Burtt, Craig Barron, Richard Christian Matheson, Joe Dante and Dana Gould — plus thoughtful liner notes by Geoffrey O’Brien. And don’t forget those excellent movie trailers narrated by a breathless Orson Welles. Robert Scott Carey should have his own statue in Los Angeles, like Rocky Balboa in Philadelphia.

After months of ass-kicking trailers and a nonstop barrage of crazy on set stories (Jared Leto gifting used condoms will live in production story infamy), “Suicide Squad” is finally ready to be unleashed in theaters this Friday, August 5. The story of everyone’s favorite DC villains as they band together to fight an unknown evil and reduce their prison sentences, the superhero movie is gearing up for a huge opening weekend (tracking suggests it’ll make at least $125 million) and might be Warner Brothers’ key in getting their superhero universe back on the right track after the lackluster response to “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.”

Twitter has named Ross Hoffman its new vice president of global media, the company announced. Hoffman has been at Twitter since 2010, most recently as senior director of brand strategy. Hoffman is the third person named to the position in the past six months. He replaces Nathan Hubbard, the former Ticketmaster president who held the title since January but announced his departure from the social media giant last month. Hoffman will oversee Twitter’s day-to-day media operations and report to Ali Jafari, VP of revenue partnerships. Jafari is also currently overseeing the company’s media and business development. A few years ago the editors of Shadowlocked asked me to compile a list of what was initially to be, the ten greatest movie matte paintings of all time. A mere ten selections was too slim by a long shot, so my list stretched considerably to twenty, then thirty and finally a nice round fifty entries. Even with that number I found it wasn’t easy to narrow down a suitably wide ranging showcase of motion picture matte art that best represented the artform. So with that in mind, and due to the surprising popularity of that 2012 Shadowlocked list (which is well worth a visit, here Ed), I’ve assembled a further fifty wonderful examples of this vast, vital and more extensively utilised than you’d imagine – though now sadly ‘dead and buried’ – movie magic.
It would of course be so easy to simply concentrate on the well known, iconic,...

The art of the glass shot or matte painting is one which originated very much in the early ‘teens’ of the silent era. Pioneer film maker, director, cameraman and visual effects inventor Norman Dawn is generally acknowledged as the father of the painted matte composite, with other visionary film makers such as Ferdinand Pinney Earle, Walter Hall and Walter Percy Day being heralded as making vast contributions to the trick process in the early 1920’s.
Boiled down, the matte process is one whereby a limited film set may be extended to whatever, or wherever the director’s imagination dictates with the employment of a matte artist. In it’s most pure form, the artist would set up a large plate of clear glass in front of the motion picture camera upon which he would carefully paint in new scenery an ornate period ceiling, snow capped mountains, a Gothic castle or even an alien world.
