Long before he confused the heck out of all of us with "Tenet," Christopher Nolan was producing scripts so perplexing that even veterans like Leonardo DiCaprio and Guy Pearce didn't understand them. Tom Hardy has admitted to taking a leap on the script for "Inception," which he claimed was a "bit complicated," and Nolan even confused himself by including a famous line in "The Dark Knight" that he didn't understand.
So, even if you're a Nolan fan, you're likely used to being befuddled by the director's efforts. But the man basically announced his arrival in Hollywood as a filmmaker with a penchant for the perplexing. After self-financing his first film, "Following," which contained several Nolan trademarks including a non-linear narrative, the director found himself with a modest budget for his studio debut, "Memento." A hand shakes a Polaroid as it "reverse develops," moments before an ejected shell casing re-enters the gun it was fired from -- the bullet coming back out of the screaming man it was fired into.
As opening scenes go, you don't get much better than "Memento," Christopher Nolan's gripping film. And, as features go, few are as scary-good as this one. A thriller about memory, reality and, um, tattoos, "Memento's" twisty plot more than holds up 15 years later. Some would say it's "The Dark Knight" director's best film.
Forget the pending remake that has everyone crying "too soon;" in honor of the film's 15th anniversary this week, here are 15 things you never knew about this modern classic.
1. The brothers Nolan -- Christopher (pictured) and Jonathan -- came up with the idea for the film while on a 2000 mile road trip, driving from Chicago to Los Angeles.

Why Watch? Inspired by Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Tell-Tale Heart,” director Garrett DeHart has blended computer-rendered imagery with grotesquerie in order to paint a gorgeous portrait in blood. Set after the Civil War, it stars Larry Holden (Memento, Batman Begins) as a veteran awaiting the gallows while weaving his way through his own insanity and a reality that feels even more unhinged. The visuals are reminiscent of the computer graphics of 1999. Painted animation, that partially rotoscoped feeling that made people look real one nanosecond, then obviously fake the next. It’s a perfect match for the tone of the fever dream being told here, and something few people are choosing to do stylistically. Behind all of it is a grand sense of agony and dread created by a dark palette, uneasy imagery and a one-eyed preacher imbuing the raw violence with cries about blood setting us free. Every moment has a thin layer of dirt over...

Memento Timeline Infographic. The Memento (2000) Timeline Infographic explains the multiple plot lines of the film if the viewer was having a problem understanding. Memento “chronicles two separate stories of Leonard, an ex-insurance investigator who can no longer build new memories, as he attempts to find the murderer of his wife, which is the last thing he remembers. One story line moves forward in time while the other tells the story backwards revealing more each time.”

A little news on an independent horror flick that is due to premiere next month. Blood Was Everywhere is about a killer on the loose in a small town in Massachusetts and will premiere on November 5th in The Green Room, Uxbridge Ma (where part of the film was shot). Judging from the trailer, which is posted below, I would think it is likely to go down quite well. Personally I am digging the atmosphere and use of the music, and surprisingly there isn’t blood everywhere. There is plenty in the trailer though to hint that the filmmakers haven’t skimped on the claret. Anyway, you can judge for yourselves.

A new slasher movie always excites me - no matter the quality. Sure the glory days are over, but that doesn't mean these indie filmmakers can't occasionally hit one out of the park, right? And these guys are from my hometown state of Massachusetts so what the hell? I'll gladly check this out.

I had been pushing off my neo-noir retrospective review of Christopher Nolan's Memento (2000) for numerous reasons. Initially, I kept pushing it off so that we could run it the same week that his latest film, Inception -- one of the most awaited films of the summer -- hit theaters. Well, that week has finally come (I have my midnight tickets, do you?), yet I was still feeling a bout of procrastination when it came to writing about Memento. Despite my rationalizing, the main reason I kept pushing the review off was, regardless of my love of the film and noir in general, I simply did not know what original insights I could bring to the table. Memento, like so many other great films before it, has inspired a great deal of criticism and analysis. That said, I'm tapping out. I'm playing my get out of jail free card. I'm writing my first real-time review.
