The official trailer for the Peacock original film Praise This has just been released. The film will stream exclusively on Peacock on April 7th!
Five-time Grammy nominee Chloe Bailey, star of Grown-ish and half of the sibling musical duo Chloe x Halle, stars in a new cinematic musical event set in the world of Atlanta’s competitive gospel youth choir praise teams.
From director Tina Gordon, writer-director of Little and the writer of What Men Want and Drumline, Praise This follows aspiring musical superstar Sam (Chloe Bailey), a young woman driven, at almost any cost, to break into the music business. So, when her father, worried that Sam is associating with a dangerous crowd, moves them from Los Angeles to Atlanta to live with Sam’s sunny cousin, Jess, Sam is . . . not happy.

Do you feel the need? The need for ... another Blu-ray column? The biggest entry in this latest Blu-ray round-up is, of course, the mega-hit "Top Gun: Maverick." But there are a bunch of other major releases here, including a Criterion Collection edition of "Malcolm X," Mia Goth going crazy in "Pearl," a massive box set from Columbia Pictures, a 4K release of "Punisher: War Zone," the latest from George Miller, and a Brian De Palma classic. So keep spinning those discs.
Top Gun: Maverick
I wasn't as high on "Top Gun: Maverick" as most people, but I appreciate it as an old-school blockbuster. Tom Cruise is back, training a new generation of fighter pilots to pull off a move that really seems like the plan to blow up the Death Star at the end of "Star Wars." Blending practical effects with digital seamlessly, "Maverick" is a fist-pumping, action-packed adventure that...

Writer-director Chinonye Chukwu and Orion Pictures revealed a first look at Danielle Deadwyler as Mamie Till Mobley and Jalyn Hall as her son Emmett in a trailer for “Till.”
The film tells the story of Emmett Till, the 14-year-old Black boy whose murder by lynching in 1955 became one of the catalyzing events of the civil rights movement. The events of his life and aftermath of his death unfold through the perspective of Mobley Till, whose lifelong fight for justice permanently changed the nation.
The trailer opens with glimpses into Emmett’s upbringing in Chicago, surrounded by community and family, including his grandmother Alma Carthan (Whoopi Goldberg). Ahead of visiting his cousins in Mississippi, Mamie explains to Emmett that racism functions differently in the South. “Be small down there,” she warns him.

“Clemency” director Chinonye Chukwu writes and directs “Till,” an upcoming biopic about Mamie Till Mobley (Danielle Deadwyler), an American educator and activist who pursues justice after the 1955 lynching of her 14-year-old son Emmett Till (Jalyn Hall) when he was visiting his cousins in Mississippi.
Per the official logline, “In Mamie’s poignant journey of grief turned to action, we see the universal power of a mother’s ability to change the world.”
The film utilizes decades worth of research by filmmaker Keith Beauchamp, whose documentary “The Untold story of Emmett Till” in part led to the U.S. Department of Justice reopening the case in 2004. Beauchamp co-wrote the screenplay for “Till” with Michael Reilly and Chukwu, whose 2019 film “Clemency” landed lead star Alfre Woodard a BAFTA nomination and the film the U.S. Grand Jury Dramatic Prize at Sundance.

A film about the life and death of Emmett Till – the 14-year-old whose gruesome lynching in 1955 helped galvanize the civil rights movement – had been in the works for decades before it found its way to Chinonye Chukwu, but all it took was an empowering thumbs up from James Bond film franchise producer Barbara Broccoli to convince her to take on the task.
Writer-director Chukwu had just premiered her 2019 film “Clemency” when Broccoli approached her with a new project. Three years later, Chukwu recalled Broccoli’s 10 “magic words” that sealed the deal: “‘You can take this in whatever creative direction you want.'”
Granted full artistic license, she chose Emmett’s mother Mamie Till Mobley as the film’s narrative vessel, and thus “Till” was born.

I was curious to see how “The Birth of a Nation” — which I first saw at Sundance, where it drew two standing ovations and won the jury and audience prizes — would play for a real audience; in this case, at UCLA Extension’s fall screening series Sneak Previews.
As I watched the film again, I recognized the power of this handsomely mounted movie. Writer-director Nate Parker carefully crafted the (mostly) historically accurate story to show how, in 1831, the charismatic and educated slave Nat Turner (Parker) preached the gospel around his Virginia county, to the enrichment of his childhood playmate and master Samuel Turner (Armie Hammer), in order to placate the local restless slave population, many of them living under far worse conditions.
He witnessed horror after horror, including the brutal gang rape of his beloved wife (Aja Naomi King), which eventually sent him on a mission of righteous vengeance from the Lord.

Sundance: Fox Searchlight swooped on Monday night for worldwide rights to Nate Parker’s The Birth Of A Nation, reportedly paying $17.5m in what would be the biggest ever on-site deal in Park City.
Separately, Amazon Studios has snapped up another Sundance title, taking North American rights to Todd Solondz’s Wiener-Dog.
Parker’s slave revolt drama The Birth Of A Nation premiered on Monday at the Eccles and earned a prolonged standing ovation. Bron Studios, Mandalay Pictures, Phantom Four and Tiny Giant Productions produced.
The film’s resonance is particularly profound in a season when diversity and a perceived lack of recognition of non-white actors has dominated the headlines.
Buyers were out in force and moved quickly to pursue it. According to reports Netflix offered a higher sum - around $20m - but Parker is understood to have wanted wide theatrical exposure and in the end Searchlight won out and was closing the deal on Tuesday...

Yes, another day, another anniversary. But this one is quite noteworthy. Spike Lee's "Do the Right Thing" turns 25 on Monday. It is a film I first saw when I was young, but I wasn't at all ready for it. I saw it again in film school and noticed I had grown with it, but it still whipped up complex feelings (as only the best films can). I've revisited it a number of times over the years and come to cherish it as one of the greatest pieces of cinema ever conjured, but the Academy frankly seemed like it was holding its nose just to give it the two nominations it received a quarter century ago. Kim Basinger had the right idea when the night of the Oscars came. "The best film of the year is not even nominated [for Best Picture] and it's 'Do the Right Thing,'" the "Batman" star said,...

The Academy has announced the new class of invited members for 2014 and, as is typical, many of which are among last year's nominees, which includes Barkhad Abdi, Michael Fassbender, Sally Hawkins, Mads Mikkelsen, Lupita Nyong'o and June Squibb in the Actors branch not to mention curious additions such as Josh Hutcherson, Rob Riggle and Jason Statham, but, okay. The Directors branch adds Jay and Mark Duplass along with Jean-Marc Vallee, Denis Villeneuve and Thomas Vinterberg. I didn't do an immediate tally of male to female additions or other demographics, but at first glance it seems to be a wide spread batch of new additions on all fronts. The Academy is also clearly attempting to aggressively bump up the demographics as this is the second year in a row where they have added a large number of new members, well over the average of 133 new members from 2004 to 2012. As far as...

Michael Fassbender and Lupita Nyong’o of 12 Years a Slave were two of the 271 artists and industry leaders invited to become members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which determines nominations and winners at the annual Oscars. The entire list of Academy membership—which numbers about 6,000—isn’t public information so the annual invitation list is often the best indication of the artists involved in the prestigious awards process. It’s worth noting that invitations need to be accepted in order for artists to become members; some artists, like two-time Best Actor winner Sean Penn, have declined membership over the years.

Pop quiz: What do Chris Rock, Claire Denis, Eddie Vedder and Josh Hutcherson all have in common? Answer: They could all be Oscar voters very soon. The annual Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences invitation list always makes for interesting reading, shedding light on just how large and far-reaching the group's membership is -- or could be, depending on who accepts their invitations. This year, 271 individuals have been asked to join AMPAS, meaning every one of them could contribute to next year's Academy Awards balloting -- and it's as diverse a list as they've ever assembled. Think the Academy consists entirely of fusty retired white dudes? Not if recent Best Original Song nominee Pharrell Williams takes them up on their offer. Think it's all just a Hollywood insiders' game? Not if French arthouse titans Chantal Akerman and Olivier Assayas join the party. It's a list that subverts expectation at every turn.

Writer-director Malcolm D. Lee has re-assembled the entire nine-member cast of the original 1999 movie for this sequel.
Sequels are rampant in Hollywood, but it’s rare to see a sequel produced almost 15 years after the release of the original movie. This happens when a movie has a fan base, and filmmakers and cast members are eager to revisit an earlier opus. The Best Man was a hit in 1999, partly because it appealed to a more upscale African-American audience than Hollywood ordinarily acknowledges. Now writer-director Malcolm D. Lee has re-assembled the entire nine-member cast of the original movie for The Best Man Holiday, which is set at Christmas and has a good chance to succeed and also become a holiday perennial on TV and DVD.

Some of you might remember my May 2011 post, revealing that the multi-talented Tupac Shakur wrote a screenplay - the only one he ever penned - while he was in jail for a weapons charge, written over an 11-month sentence at the Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, N.Y., in 1995; and in that post, I mentioned that Preston Holmes and Ivan Juzang's NStar Studios (who collaborated with Shakur's mother to make the documentary Tupac: Resurrection), had acquired rights to the script, with plans to produce a film some time this year. Recapping... Titled, Live 2 Tell, the script was said to center on a...

Just a mere 15 years after his death, Tupac Shakur’s screenplay is in development at NStar Studios. Written in 1995 while Shakur was serving prison time, Live 2 Tell depicts the life of a teenage drug baron as he tries to leave behind his life of crime. Tupac: Resurrection producer Preston Holmes has been trying to get the film made since prior to Shakur’s death; with the help of Hustle & Flow producer Dwight Williams and Shakur’s mother Afeni Shakur, it looks like the film will finally start production in early 2012. As for casting the lead in the Tupac Shakur movie, Holmes isn’t too concerned with casting any ol’ A-lister. “We think that the name we need is the name we have, which is Tupac Shakur,” he explains. Who do you think would the ideal casting pick for Tupac’s one and only screenplay?

The filming of the Tupac biopic has been dominant in regards to the most important posthumous release in recent years, but it might be taking the backseat now as a screenplay, titled Live 2 Tell, assumed to be written while Pac was in prison serving a sentence due to weapons charges, has been discovered and purchased.
So the report goes, NStar Studios purchased the excavated screenplay for $11 million, and is set put it into production next year. Studio co-head Preston Holmes, who worked with Pac's mother Afeni Shakur on the documentary Tupac: Resurrection, is set to co-produce the screenplay with Hustle and Flow producer Dwight Williams, while Shakur's mother will act as the executive producer.

Wait, what? Tupac Shakur? Screenwriter? Dead? Yes. Yes. And yes. It’s been some 15 years since Shakur was shot dead on the streets of Las Vegas but that hasn’t stopped the hip-hop/rap artist from leaving his mark all over everything. It seems as though Shakur wrote a screenplay about the life in the drug trade with serving an 11-month sentence on sexual assault charges at the Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, N.Y.
Variety says Live 2 Tell deals with a teenage drug lord and his efforts at trying to leave the life of crime behind him. Sounds like a decent story, and should be fairly gritty since that premise would hit close to home with Shakur. We have a little bit more information on this after the jump.

Apparently the late rapper Tupac Shakur wrote a screenplay, called "Live 2 Tell," while spending eleven months in jail on weapons charges. That screenplay has now been acquired by Preston Holmes and Ivan Juzang's NStar Studios. "Live 2 Tell" revolves around a teenage drug lord and his efforts to leave a life of crime. The production company is planning to begin shooting the film early next year. "This kid was a genius and he was from this community. He knew the struggles these young people were dealing with," said Juzang. "And he's able to talk to young people in 2011, 2012, the same way he was able to talk to young people in 1995." Holmes previously collaborated with Shakur's mother to make the "Tupac: Resurrection" documentary.

After continuing to sell albums even after his death (a testament to the amount of work the man did in the studio), legendary rapper Tupac Shakur has taken the next logical step: sell a script from beyond the grave! Live 2 Tell, an original screenplay written by the man while serving an 11-month prison sentence for sexual abuse in 1995 (a case that would later be argued to have been completely bogus and even politically motivated), has been picked up by Preston Holmes and Ivan Juzang's...

Before his life was taken by bullets, Tupac Shakur spent some time behind bars which he made use to write a screenplay. "Live 2 Tell" rights have been acquired by Preston Holmes and Ivan Juzang-owned NStar Studios for a production in the first quarter of 2012.
The rapper's only screenplay follows the story of a teenage drug lord and his efforts to leave a life of crime. Shakur at that point of life was serving time for weapon possession charges. He was sentenced to 11 months at the Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, N.Y.
"This kid was a genius, and the net of it is, he was from this community, he knew the struggles these young people were dealing with," Juzang told Variety. "And he's able to talk to young people in 2011, 2012, the same ways he was able to talk to young people 1995."
