Few horror sub-genres are as divisive as exorcism movies. For some, they are silly to the point of high camp, outrageous stories about invisible creatures that can take control of normal people and make them do outrageous things. For others, exorcism movies reveal a hidden realm of evil that has a very real impact on our world.
That tension allows a wide variety of approaches within the sub-genre, despite the dominance of one monumental film from the 70s. Exorcism movies can be ridiculous crowd-pleasers, stately dramas, or lowbrow comedies. Whether it’s because of the power of Christ or a really good script, you should feel compelled to watch these great exorcism movies.
The Exorcist (1973)
Of course, it starts with The Exorcist, directed by the late, great William Friedkin. Friedkin wasn’t writer William Peter Blatty’s first choice to direct the movie, which first went to Francis Ford Coppola and Peter Bogdanovich.

There’s another Amityville movie to watch! And this one actually has some connection to the early days of the franchise. These days it seems like every indie filmmaker in the world has made something with Amityville in the title, but the new film The Amityville Curse is based on the novel of the same title, which was written by Hans Holzer. Holzer was a parapsychologist who invested the supposedly haunted house in Amityville in the ’70s and went on to write the books Murder in Amityville (which served as a source of inspiration for Amityville II: The Possession), The Secret of Amityville, and yes, The Amityville Curse. The new adaptation of Holzer’s work has been released through the Tubi streaming service as a Tubi Original – and you can check out the trailer for it in the embed above.
This is actually the second movie to be called The Amityville Curse.

A new film adaptation of Hans Holzer’s The Amityville Curse, which was published in 1981, brand new Tubi Original horror movie The Amityville Curse is now streaming.
Hans Holzer’s book, it’s interesting to note, ended up serving as the basis for official franchise movie The Amityville Curse, which was released back in 1990.
Tubi previews, “The new adaptation of Hans Holzer’s novel is a modern take on the ever popular franchise with a fictionalized story that remains true to the novel.”
Further ensuring an authentic approach, Incendo secured the underlying rights to Hans Holzer’s titular original novel from the estate.
In The Amityville Curse, “A group of friends purchase an infamous home with the intention of flipping it, only to discover a deadly paranormal presence bent on destruction.”

The Amityville Curse seemed to bear a couple of its own curses. It’s an Amityville knockoff and after Amityville Cult, Amityville Thanksgiving, Amityville in the Hood, and so many more, it’s pretty much a guarantee of mediocrity. Secondly, it’s a Tubi Original, which usually carries a very similar guarantee.
But there were a couple of reasons to be hopeful as well. Director Éric Tessier may not be well known outside of Quebec but his adaptions of two of Patrick Senécal’s novels, 5150 Elm’s Way and more importantly, Sur le Seuil aka Evil Words, are both excellent. Dennis Heaton wrote the film, based on the novel by the late Hans Holzer. Heaton you may recall wrote the Billy Connolly zom-com Fido.

From Jeffrey Dahmer’s history of murder to the tragic death of Ronald DeFeo Jr., The Exorcist horror franchise has been addressed several times in practically all of these crime stories. According to some, The Exorcist responds erratically in their brains, especially those who infamously grew up to be murderers and serial killers, suggesting that the film served as inspiration for their crimes. The third episode of Amityville: An Origin Story also discusses these cursed movie franchises, like The Exorcist. Previously, issues about the veracity of George and Kathy Lutz’s story had been raised, but in this episode, we got a wide overview of both of these possibilities, whether it may all be a fraud or whether the Lutzes were indeed victims of such horrible occurrences. Let’s see what we can conclude at the end of the episode.

The first episode of Amityville: An Origin Story focused mostly on the house the Lutz family relocated to and began experiencing frightening things in. As questions about George Lutz’s spiritual beliefs were addressed, we learned that he had an attraction to the supernatural. However, George eventually conducted some research on the property and discovered that the previous owners, the DeFeos, had been murdered in the house. The revelation that Ronald DeFeo Jr., the family’s eldest son, murdered six members of his family tainted the entire situation. Let us look into the matter of whether there was truly a ghost in the DeFeos’ home or if it was all just a criminal matter.

Entertainment, news, and the paranormal are connected more than you might think. I find it interesting that every person in the paranormal community I’ve talked with is also a horror nerd like me—the horror genre and belief in the unexplained are undeniably intertwined.
That’s why for this month’s Dead Time, I wanted to talk with paranormal journalist, TV host, podcaster, and fellow spooky nerd Aaron Sagers.
During his extensive career as a journalist, Sagers has appeared on numerous TV shows and online videos. You’ve probably seen him analyzing bizarre videos on Paranormal Caught on Camera on Travel Channel and Discovery Plus or hosting shows like Discovery’s Paranormal Lockdown: Evidence Revealed or the web series Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Twice a month Joe Lipsett will dissect a new Amityville Horror film to explore how the “franchise” has evolved in increasingly ludicrous directions. This is “The Amityville IP.”
Less than a year after the possessed lamp made its debut, Canada delivers the fifth entry in the Amityville franchise…and the result is a little ho-hum.
I’m still unsure at what point I need to start grading on a new curve, but now that the films have moved entirely into the realm of made-for-tv, there’s a noticeable shift in quality. While The Evil Escapes suffered from over-lit scenes but at least attempted to connect its narrative back to the original house, The Amityville Curse is the first film to basically retain the name and mostly jettison the rest.

Twice a month Joe Lipsett will dissect a new Amityville Horror film to explore how the “franchise” has evolved in increasingly ludicrous directions.
While it’s easy to appreciate the grounded, almost stoic nature of the original, it’s hard not to enjoy the outright campiness of Amityville 2: The Possession. The sequel, which never explicitly mentions the Lutzs due to real life legal issues, is an absolutely wild ride.
Written by Fright Night Part 2 and Halloween 3: Season of the Witch’s Tommy Lee Wallace, the second film in the Amityville franchise crams in over the top performances, incest and more than a few nods to horror trends, including both the infamous Pov shots from slasher films like Halloween and Black Christmas, and a narrative riff on The Exorcist.
The film tells the story of the Montelli family, an Italian American family that moves into the now iconic house.

Fox’s Tubi is adding to its horror library after picking up two Canadian genre pics — Dennis Heaton’s adaptation of Hans Holzer’s The Amityville Curse novel and Marry F*** Kill from writers Ian Carpenter and Aaron Martin — at the Toronto Film Festival.
Indie production banner Incendo will shoot both productions later this year for Tubi in the U.S. market where it faces stepped-up competition in the free, ad-supported online space against Paramount’s Pluto TV, Amazon’s Freevee and the Roku Channel.
The latest genre pic deals for the Fox-owned streaming platform were unveiled on Tuesday at TIFF as part of its informal film market. Marry F*** Kill sees five estranged college friends reunite for their friend’s funeral after her suicide, only to see an innocent game of “Marry, Fuck, Kill” turn into something far more sinister.

When it comes to the entertainment of the unexplained, or paranormal pop culture, humans live in a world(s) populated by all manner of preternatural, supernatural, otherworldly, and extradimensional phenomena. But entertainment also tells us there are rules that bring order to the abnormal – whether it’s a ghost or demon, alien or sasquatch, werewolf or vampire, or even a troll or fairy.
Yet behind every silver bullet solution that makes it into a script, there is typically a wealth of academic study that’s both complicated, and sometimes contradictory. From folklore to grimoire, anthropology to parapsychology, researchers have attempted to document and take a serious look at topics slightly askew from the norm.

Smiling Woman and Other Short Horror Films from Alex Magaña: "Last Halloween I entered an under 3 minute horror short film contest. I lost, but since it's release, my short "Smiling Woman" has passed 2 million views on YouTube! Seeing the way people have reacted to it and the positive feed back inspired me to make more horror short films. It's been tough with the quarantine and Covid-19 but I've been finding creative ways to work and stay safe, such as filming out in the woods where we'd be away from people, writing scripts with a small cast and keeping to a 2-3 person crew. Starting July 15th, I have released an under 3 minute horror short film every Wednesday and will continue to do so.

It's time to examine the career and legacy of paranormal pioneer Hans Holzer.
Born in Vienna on January 26, 1920, Hans Holzer was like many children, fascinated by the ghost and fairy stories he heard in his youth. But those tales, told by his Uncle Henry, which he retold at school to the disapproval of adults, stayed with Holzer. Ghosts became his life’s work as one of the world’s most famous figures in the paranormal field.
Before his death in 2009, at age 89, Holzer authored nearly 140 books on the paranormal, extraterrestrial life, witchcraft, and more, beginning with 1963’s Ghost Hunter. During a career that famously involved the “Amityville Horror” house case in 1977, Holzer also taught parapsychology at the New York Institute of Technology, and both appeared on, and consulted for, Leonard Nimoy’s late 1970s show In Search Of… And interestingly, actor Dan Aykroyd claimed an obsession with Holzer,...

Parapsychologist Dr. Hans Holzer changed the face of paranormal research more than a half-century ago, and in Travel Channel’s latest mystical show, “The Holzer Files,” his daughter Alexandra Holzer proudly carries on his legacy by revisiting his groundbreaking – and frequently creepy — work.
On “The Holzer Files,” true hauntings dating back to the 1950s that were documented in letters, photographs and super-chilling audio and visual recordings by America’s first ghost hunter, Hans Holzer, are being reopened and explored by a dedicated paranormal team led by investigator Dave Schrader, psychic medium Cindy Kaza, equipment tech Shane Pittman and Holzer’s daughter, Alexandra.
“I grew up in that environment, and not just with Dad, but with Mother,” Alexandra Holzer said, adding that her mom was a Russian countess. “They both had that background in different areas. And it’s fascinating. So I really can’t get away from it.”

We give you an exclusive look of The Holzer Files going down to Texas to study a case of possible demonic possession.
For more than a decade, Dave Schrader has explored and reported on paranormal phenomena through his radio shows Darkness Radio and Beyond the Darkness, as a fill-in host for Coast to Coast Am, and as a TV personality on Travel Channel’s Paranormal Challenge and Ghost Adventures.
Now with his new show The Holzer Files on Travel, Schrader reopens the cases of Hans Holzer, the so-called “father of the paranormal,” America’s first ghost hunter, and inspiration for Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis’ Ghostbusters. Aided by Holzer’s daughter Alexandra Holzer-Lawson, psychic-medium Cindy Kaza, and equipment tech Shane Pittman, Schrader digs into documents and case files that date back to the 1950s.

Hans Holzer was the first known ghost hunter in America. Sadly he’s not around anymore, but his stories, screenplays, and research are available if you know where to look. That’s exactly what the Travel Channel did for part of this year’s Ghostober lineup. Ghostober is Travel’s biggest annual event with a huge lineup of fantastic spooky programming. The Holzer Files is a show about just that, the ghost hunting done by Hans himself. It looks to be a fantastic show. We’re looking forward to every episode so much that we’ve curated this blood-curdling list of ten things you didn’t know

Ghosts, spirits, entities, phantoms, lost souls, shadow people, demons, apparitions… whatever you want to call them, Travel Channel has enough programming about them lined up in October to keep you spooked all month long. The big question is, if ghosts really do exist, why is everyone so obsessed with them?
Travel Channel has become a sort of Paranormal Headquarters, where the mission is to get viewers screaming from now until Halloween. Their “Ghostober” programming has, count ‘em, 16 creepy events rolling out that’ll have you sleeping with the lights on.
“We start October with a live event where we have most of our talent from across different shows come together. I call them the Avengers of paranormal investigation,” Travel Channel’s general manager Matthew Butler tells TheWrap.
So, that said, psychic and paranormal expert Chip Coffey warns all the ghosts hiding out there, “Damn the torpedoes, we’re comin’ for you!

Travel Channel's Ghostober looks back at old haunts as The Holzer Files follows pioneering ghost hunter who inspired Amityville Horror.
Halloween falls every week in Ghostober, Travel Channel's month-long celebration of all things spooky. Shane Pittman, Dave Schrader and clairvoyant, clairaudient and clairsentient intuitive Cindy Kaza will resurrect the cases of America’s first ghost hunter on the new series The Holzer Files.
Holzer is recognized as the “father of the paranormal.” His works inspired Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis to write Ghostbusters. Born in Vienna in 1920, Dr. Hans Holzer is one of the most famous parapsychologists in this dimension. The author of 138 books, mostly on the occult, he is best known for inspiring The Amityville Horror.
In January 1977, he and Ethel Meyers, a medium, investigated the the Long Island property reputedly haunted by previous owner Ronald Defeo Jr., who murdered his family at the home...

Lorraine Warren, who along with her husband Ed, investigated cases that inspired The Conjuring, Annabelle, and more, had died.
A legend in the world of ghosts, on this plane of existence and perhaps the next, has passed on.
Lorraine Warren, purported medium, ghost hunter, and author involved with cases popularized in paranormal pop culture films The Amityville Horror, The Conjuring, The Haunting in Connecticut, and Annabelle, has died at age 92. According to her son-in-law Tony Spera, Warren passed away in her sleep last night.
Lorraine -- along with her husband Ed, who died in 2006 -- founded the New England Society for Psychic Research, and claim to have investigated more than 10,000 paranormal cases. The duo became celebrities who appeared on talk shows, and gave lectures on the topics of ghosts, and demonology.

When films say they are based on true stories, it is easy to take such statements with a pinch of salt. The Amityville Horror though is one that is so enshrined in pop culture that it has a whole legend built up around it, whether it is true or not. Second Sight have now brought the popular horror to Blu-ray in the UK and it is well worth buying.
The Amityville Horror is the story of the Lutz family, who move into the perfect family home on the coast of Long Island. Surprised at how cheap it was, it soon becomes apparent why when the shocking history of the house is revealed, along with the demonic presence that resides there.

Full disclosure: The Amityville Horror films do not make up my favorite franchise. And it has nothing to do with the central “haunted house” premise, but rather the execution of the series thus far, from the serviceable ground zero template, The Amityville Horror (1979) through the (as yet unseen) upcoming Amityville: The Awakening, with some stops in between at DTVville (not to mention the Ryan Reynolds remake; but I said not to mention, so not mention I shall). The name is so shopworn now that “Amityville” has become synonymous with “poopy”.
But, but, But…let’s rewind to a time when a follow up to the kind-of goofy James Brolin (and his glorious perm) starrer was actually anticipated. That film was a smash success at the box office, and the powers that be wanted to revisit the village of Amityville to see what other demons they could find in the basement.

Sarah looks back at the Amityville films, and finds a lot of scary things, not all of which were intentional…
112 Ocean Avenue, Long Island is probably the most famous haunted house in the world. Not that you’ll necessarily recognise the address – it’s far better known as the Amityville Horror house. Back in 1975, George and Kathy Lutz moved their family into the house… and then 28 days later, they moved back out, claiming to have been driven out by supernatural forces. Their story made the news, was turned into a book, and then made into a movie, in 1979.
It’s hard to imagine now that a family claiming to have encountered the devil in their basement could cause such a massive fuss, but I’m not here to interrogate the truth of their statement. What I am here to do, though, is to watch all of the Amityville Horror movies made to date,...

Odd List Ryan Lambie 6 Nov 2013 - 06:50
From random films with altered names to unrelated storylines, we take a look at 15 incredibly tenuous horror and sci-fi film sequels...
The profit-driven nature of filmmaking usually means that, if a movie's a hit, sequels follow. And it's sometimes the case that, particularly in the realm of low-budget sci-fi and horror, those sequels are trotted out in a rush, or don't have anything to do with the film they're following.
This isn't to say that the sequels on this list are necessarily bad - it's a proper mixed bag of the great, the mediocre and the downright awful - but in each instance, these sequels have only vague links to their predecessors, or worse still, they're entirely different films rebranded to fit an existing franchise.
Our list is by no means definitive - rather, we've chosen a collection of films that we find the most memorable.

Chicago – Another week of Blu-ray, DVD, and streaming options for you to peruse courtesy of HollywoodChicago.com’s “What to Watch.” Every week, we gather a select few of the most recent Blu-ray & DVD releases, toss in at least one On Demand option we’ve seen, and present them in a checklist order for you to knock out through Amazon, iTunes, Netflix, or good, old-fashioned Blu-ray (yes, that sounds funny to me too). This week’s is the strongest yet by far. Everything in here is worth a look, all the way down to #9. This is just the order you should watch ‘em in more than anything else.

While the brand new movie Paranormal Activity is, er, knocking 'em dead at the box office, other ghostly spirits have been haunting us for centuries - and not all of them should be welcomed with open arms, according to experts. Appearing on a special Halloween edition of CNN's Larry King Live Friday, a host of ghosthunters, paranormal activists and psychics - as well as ghost victim Joan Rivers and Ghostbusters star Dan Aykroyd and his séance authority father, Peter Aykroyd - debunked the disbelievers, often with jaw-dropping stories. Rivers delivered a seriously convincing account about how a malicious spirit was...

People are coming up to me lately to say how much they enjoy playing the new Atari Ghostbusters video game and expressing hope that a third movie might be made. Sometimes they ask me, an entertainer, if I think ghosts really could exist. Are ghosts real? And if so what are they made of? Doctor Hans Holzer, probably the world's most credible and respected ghostbuster, writes in his Travel Guide to Haunted Houses (Black Dog and Leventhal Publishers): "A ghost appears to be a surviving emotional memory of someone who died traumatically... but is unaware of his or her death." Wait! So ghosts are just our memories of those who have lived before? "Sudden death comes as a shock... and human personalities stay on the spot where emotional attachment existed...

We became aware of a bit of sad news today: Hans Holzer, celebrated parapsychologist and author of numerous books about the paranormal, the most famous of which is undoubtedly Murder at Amityville (1979), the basis for the film Amityville II: The Possession, has passed away at the age of 89.
The following is an excerpt from the obituary printed by the UK's Daily Telegraph for Mr. Holzer:
Hans Holzer was born in Vienna on January 26, 1920, and developed an interest in the supernatural from his uncle Henry, who told him ghost stories. He earned a master's degree in comparative religion and claimed a doctorate in parapsychology at an elusive London College of Applied Science (not, it appears, London, England). He went on to teach parapsychology at the New York Institute of Technology and embarked on his long career as a writer and "ghost hunter" (the title of his first book, published in 1963).
