Considered a pre-cursor of Hk New Wave due to the use of hand-held cameras, location shooting, blending of genres and documentary-like realism in its presentation, “Jumping Ash” is a rather impressive production with an equally intriguing back story. It was produced by the film company Bang! Bang! Films that was formed by the famous Cantonese star Josephine Siao Fong-fong. After literally starring in hundreds of Cantonese films in the 1960s she was now looking for other challenges in grown up roles and as a producer. She is credited both as co-director and co-scriptwriter. The other scriptwriter is Philip Chan who had been in the police force since 1965 and had risen to the rank of Divisional Commander of Police in C.I.D. But at the same time he developed a great interest in film making and when Josephine invited him to help with the script he jumped at it – and...

Like the young Anthony Hope in Stephen Sondheim's scintillating Sweeney Todd, I've sailed the world, beheld its wonders, with Sweeney TODDs ranging from the original cast in New York, to an all-Japanese version in Tokyo, and have never failed to be thrilled by it. But there was something about hearing it with the New York Philharmonic, led by its music director, Alan Gilbert, that showed it in all its greatness.

Chicago – In Chicago’s continuing trend of borrowing from Broadway high-accolade actors rather than drawing upon the profusion of genius in our own backyard, at least now-Broadway star and New York local Gregg Edelman is a Chicago native. And the TV voice of the peanut M&M.
Play Rating: 4.0/5.0
Following Edelman’s previous 15 Broadway shows and four Tony Award nominations, now he’s confidently embodying the diabolical vigilante Sweeney Todd with precision, power and patience. While the 52-year-old Edelman was born in Chicago and attended Northwestern University, prior to this performance his only Chicago credit is just out of college from three decades ago: 1980’s “Evita”.

Adopting another's identity is seen as a melodramatic trick of the movies, like the evil twin in soap operas – but aren't we all imposture experts?
In The Big Picture, Romain Duris plays a prosperous Parisian lawyer who accidentally kills his wife's lover. And then, because he has always yearned to be an artist, he swaps identities with the dead man and starts a new life as a boho photographer. Taking the place of a dead person (as opposed to posing as a dead person, like Shaun of the Dead and friends) is a recurring motif of the noirish thriller, most memorably in Patricia Highsmith's The Talented Mr Ripley, filmed by both Réné Clément (as Plein Soleil, starring Alain Delon at the peak of his male pulchritude) and Anthony Minghella.
Ripley murders the man whose identity he appropriates, but impersonators more often drift passively into imposture because circumstances enable or even demand it.

Aged six, in 1910, Graham Greene first fell in love with film. It happened in Brighton, of course: "No city before the war, not London, Paris or Oxford, had such a hold on my affections." During a childhood trip to the seaside to convalesce after a bout of jaundice, the headmaster's son from Berkhamsted watched a silent version of Anthony Hope's novel Sophy of Kravonia. The flickering images of Hope's fanciful Balkan romance were accompanied "by one old lady on a piano, but the tock-tock-tock of the untuned wires stayed in my memory when other melodies faded". In 1938, the murkily seductive resort would form the unforgettable backdrop to the novel that proved once and for all his affinity not with schmaltz but with shadows. For Greene, "Brighton Rock was a very poor substitute for Kravonia, like all my books, and yet perhaps it is one of the best I ever wrote.
