Now that the upfronts are over, it’s time to hand out much-deserved accolades to those who made this year’s presentations truly unforgettable.
Just remember, everyone’s a winner here. But these folks made the week extra special in New York.
Most Ominous Overture: Kelly Clarkson kicking off a week of upfronts that used to be the sole proprietorship of broadcast networks with tunes like “Whatever Makes You Stronger” and “Since U Been Gone.”
Best Dressed Code Breakers: Men like Bob Iger, Casey Bloys, Mike Hopkins and Rob Wade for appearing without ties. Nothing says we are hemorrhaging money more than a nude neck.
Earworm Award: Beyoncé’s Texas Hold ‘Em and Miley Cyrus’ Flowers that were played on a loop.
Best Joke of the Week: “NBC is launching the new adventure Destination X,” said Seth Meyers at the NBCU upfront. “It was originally titled the Linda Yaccarino story.

Oscar-winning producer Cathy Schulman knows her way around a theatrical release. From “Crash” to “The Woman King,” the long-time Hollywood heavy-hitter has wide-ranging taste that’s earned her both a Best Picture win and millions of box office bucks. But as the theatrical landscape shifts — heck, as the entire entertainment industry shifts — Schulman is staying nimble. These days, that means something that would have sounded crazy a decade ago: a massive hit that goes straight to streaming.
That’s the case with Schulman’s latest, the Michael Showalter-directed Amazon MGM Studios smash “The Idea of You,” a sexy rom-com-dram based on Robinne Lee’s bestselling novel and starring Anne Hathaway and rising star Nicholas Galitzine. In just two weeks on Prime Video, the film has smashed up all sorts of streaming records, handily proving that people do want to watch at home, they will turn out for a streaming-only release,...

It used to be all about the trailers and the broadcast fall schedules. Now those are largely a thing of the past as the media sector’s upfront presentations to Madison Avenue ad buyers continue to evolve.
Following a week of spin and hard sales, here are eight central takeaways after Netflix, Amazon, NBCUniversal, Disney, Warner Bros. Discovery, YouTube and Fox made their pitches.
1. The Streaming Giants Came to Play Reese Witherspoon attends as Amazon debuts Inaugural Upfront Presentation at Pier 36 on May 14, 2024 in New York City.
This year was the first time that Netflix and Amazon had physical events in New York during upfronts week (YouTube is now in year three), and they clearly tried to make an impression, gunning for a piece of the $20 billion or so in upfront commitments that used to go exclusively to traditional entertainment companies. Amazon’s event Tuesday featured “the highest concentration of...

Updated with additional exec comment. A trio of Amazon ad execs closed the company’s first upfront presentation Tuesday morning in New York, bookending remarks from two senior-level colleagues at the start of the 90-minute show.
Tanner Elton, VP of U.S. Ad Sales, emphasized the company’s difference-making scale, with monthly reach to 200 million monthly viewers of Prime Video. “This is Amazon – we’re the place those customers come to shop and do so much more,” Elton said. “Which means we can do things nobody else can do.”
Sarah Iooss, Director of U.S. Agency Development and Twitch, told ad buyers at Pier 36 that all of them would be able to benefit from the technology and data insights that have long been at the core of the company. “All of you are endemic to Amazon,” she said.

At the Amazon upfront, Reese Witherspoon appearing in character as Legally Blonde’s Elle Woods wasn’t even the actress’ best effort of the morning. That came about 45 minutes before her presentation wrapper, when she scolded her You’re Cordially Invited co-star Will Ferrell for bragging about his romantic comedy prowess.
“I’m the fucking queen of looking cute while sleeping,” said Witherspoon, referring to that moment in every rom-com when one actor lovingly looks at the other while their eyes are closed. This delighted the crowd at the tech giant’s first-ever upfront presentation, as did much of star-packed show — once they got in, of course. Slow lines stretched down South Street, prompting a half-hour delay for the Pier 36 event.
“Thank you for whatever you went through to get in this room,” said Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon MGM Studios, when she finally took the stage. “I know it was a lot.

Michael Showalter’s The Idea of You, starring Nicholas Galitzine and Anne Hathaway, is on track to command Amazon MGM Studios’ biggest ever debut for a rom-com with nearly 50 million viewers globally in its first two weeks on Prime Video.
Amazon declined to comment on the metric used to arrive at this number. But Mike Hopkins, Worldwide Head of Prime Video & Amazon MGM Studios, made the announcement on stage during the studio’s inaugural Upfronts presentation on Tuesday.
“The extraordinary reception of The Idea of You has been thrilling—even leading up to the release, with its record-breaking trailer views to its chart-topping soundtrack,” said Julie Rapaport, Head of Film, Production and Development at Amazon MGM Studios. “And now, audiences have truly fallen for this film, and we could not be prouder of our stars Anne Hathaway and Nicholas Galitzine, the brilliant vision of Michael Showalter, and the rest of...

Amazon Prime Video made its first upfront presentation to advertisers on Tuesday in New York, with the streamer bringing out some of its biggest stars to break some news while touting its original series, film and sports offerings.
Amazon took over Pier 36 in Manhattan, which included a large installation dedicated to Amazon shows like “Fallout” and “The Summer I Turned Pretty” as well as movies like “Road House” and their various sports offerings like “Thursday Night Football.”
Amazon’s first major upfront started half an hour late — the long line to get in was referenced several times by Amazon MGM Studios head Jen Salke and even “You’re Cordially Invited” stars Reese Witherspoon and Will Ferrell. Producers in Southeast Asia are facing a very different, much quieter landscape to the one in front of them just 12 months ago, as U.S. players rein in their spending to appease shareholders, and neighboring countries such as Korea, Japan and India draw attention.
Southeast Asia, which at one point was considered a key growth opportunity for international streamers such as Prime Video and Disney+, has seen money drain out of its main markets. Spending was reeled in and layoffs hit original production staff amid the global streaming reset of last year, and the region has been one of the worst hit as a result.
In fact, Netflix remains the only major American streamer still commissioning across the region — albeit at what several sources say is on a smaller scale in most countries compared to a few years back. (Netflix insiders refute this.) Disney+ and Prime Video have both completely...

Companies like Disney have had a tough time achieving streaming success in India, but Prime Video has announced a slate of 69 originals to be produced there.
The Indian streaming market has been a tough nut to crack for many United States-based media companies. The nation has a huge potential subscriber base, but the lower average income in the country, as compared to other global territories, makes the economics of owning a streaming service in India challenging. However, Amazon seems completely unbothered by these issues; according to Deadline, more Amazon Prime subscriptions have originated in India than any other country besides the United States in recent years, and Indian Prime subscribers were also most likely to use Prime Video than any other Prime benefit.

Exclusive: Prime Video’s teams in Africa and the Middle East & North Africa region are facing layoffs, as part of a wider restructure that also “rebalances” investment towards Amazon’s European content division.
The move will split Europe in two clusters and see “emerging” territories such as Benelux, the Cee and the Nordics get new investment, with funding for African and Mena slashed. In the past hour, Prime Video’s VP & Gm for Emea, Barry Furlong, has outlined the raft of changes to staff in a memo seen by Deadline.
Among the decisions, which are being defined as a “rebalance” of resources, Prime Video will create two European clusters, EU Established (EU5) and EU Emerging (Eux), with new roles for several execs.
This impacts the Sub-Saharan Africa and Mena, which will see investment decrease to what are being described as “prior levels.”

Amazon-owned Prime Video is to change its content strategy in Southeast Asia from a model based on original productions to one focused instead on licensing. As a result it has cut some jobs in the region.
The move follows last week’s announcement of a restructuring and several hundred job cuts in North America at Prime Video and the Amazon-owned MGM.
“Today we have made the decision to discontinue some programs and initiatives, and rebalance our international organization to focus on the countries and regions driving the most growth for our service. In Apac, we are decreasing investments in South East Asia (Sea) and moving to a leaner local operating model to support the Sea territories. David Simonsen will continue to lead this leaner Singapore based Sea team, working even more closely with our centralized business teams, as we continue to attract new customers in the region. Exclusive: Amazon Prime Video Southeast Asia is cutting its originals team in Singapore and moving to a “leaner operating model,” as part of the global wave of redundancies announced earlier this week.
Deadline has seen an internal note from Prime Video’s VP, Asia Pacific, Gaurav Gandhi (see below), which confirms the streamer is “decreasing investments in Southeast Asia (Sea) and moving to a leaner local operating model to support the Sea territories.”
In effect, this means an exit from the local originals game and a major reduction in headcount at the Singapore office, with almost all staff from this side of the business to exit. We understand programs and films from the region set to launch for this year and 2025 or in production are unaffected. They will continue to filter through, but no new originals are coming.

Amazon starts the year with layoffs across its Prime Video and MGM divisions, as it looks to “move the needle”.
The man in charge of Amazon’s Prime Video and MGM Studios divisions has got the year off to a bit of a start, by announcing hundreds of job cuts in the time honoured fashion: by email.
As per IndieWire, an email was sent from Mike Hopkins, the senior vice president of the division in question. It’s written in corporate nu-speak of course, talking about how “our industry continues to evolve quickly and it’s important that we prioritize our investments for the long-term success of our business”.
There’s a sentence where you know what’s coming next.
“We’ve identified opportunities to reduce or discontinue investments in certain areas while increasing our investment and focus on content and product initiatives that deliver the most impact”, he chirps.

For the third time in the past 12 months, Twitch is laying off a significant portion of its workforce. The streaming platform is letting go of approximately 500 staffers, according to a Bloomberg report.
The Bloomberg report, which cited “people familiar with the plans,” claimed that the layoffs will affect 35% of Twitch employees. A spokesperson for the Amazon-owned hub declined to comment on the news.

Prime Video and Amazon Studios will see layoffs affecting several hundred workers, according to an internal memo this morning from SVP Mike Hopkins.
In Hopkins’ memo, provided to Deadline by Amazon (read it below), he alludes to a review of the company’s business operations across all of its divisions. As a result of that process, he writes, “we’ve identified opportunities to reduce or discontinue investments in certain areas while increasing our investment and focus on content and product initiatives that deliver the most impact.”
Amazon’s $8.5 billion acquisition of MGM closed in 2022.
The parent company laid off about 25,000 workers a year ago, reversing a dramatic increase in staff borne of the onset of Covid in 2020, which caused a boom in demand for Amazon e-commerce deliveries. Amazon Studios and Prime Video last spring let go of 100 of their roughly 7,000 employees.

Amazon is laying off “several hundred” employees at Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios. Additionally, 500 employees — or 35% of the workforce — are being let go at Amazon-owned livestream platform Twitch.
“This is a difficult decision to make and one that my leadership team and I do not take lightly,” the company’s entertainment chief Mike Hopkins wrote in an email to staff Wednesday. “It is hard to say goodbye to talented Amazonians who’ve made meaningful contributions on behalf of our customers, team and business. Amazon is cutting hundreds of jobs in its Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios division.
Mike Hopkins, the executive who leads the division, announced the reduction in an email Wednesday morning, writing that “several hundred roles” would be eliminated.
“Our industry continues to evolve quickly and it’s important that we prioritize our investments for the long-term success of our business, while relentlessly focusing on what we know matters most to our customers,” he wrote. “Throughout the past year, we’ve looked at nearly every aspect of our business with an eye towards improving our ability to deliver even more breakthrough movies, TV shows, and live sports in a personalized, easy to use entertainment experience for our global customers. Mark your calendar: On Jan. 29, Amazon will unleash what one top advertising executive calls a “tornado” that will “upend” the streaming video landscape. The company will flip a switch and turn on ads for all of its Prime Video viewers. Users will have the option to pay $3 a month to remove the ads, but as the executive quips: “Almost no one will do that, are you kidding me?”
After all, people are paying Amazon for the fast shipping. Reacher and Thursday Night Football are thrown in for free. It’s a move that has marketers salivating and a few legacy media executives anxiously waiting to see what happens.
The move will instantly turn Amazon into a streaming-ad juggernaut, and the largest ad-supported subscription streaming platform in the marketplace with tens of millions of users, leapfrogging the likes of Netflix in the process.

Hollywood studios and major streamers met with SAG-AFTRA leadership on Saturday to present an over-arching package of proposals in an attempt to end the actors’ strike.
The union dispatched a note to its members after the meeting ended, saying the negotiating committee is now reviewing what it says is the companies’ “last, best and final offer.” It also urged members to ignore outside conjecture and rumors. After a staff review on Saturday, the union’s negotiating committee will convene on Sunday to discuss the terms.
An expanded complement of CEOs from the major studios and the streamers attended Saturday’s bargaining session with SAG leadership, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
Behind the scenes, top executives say they could be done negotiating for the time being — or likely until the new year — if SAG-AFTRA doesn’t embrace what one studio-side source in the meeting claimed was a deal “worth more than...

Updated: The studios told SAG-AFTRA on Saturday that they have made their “last, best and final” offer, as they seek an end to the 114-day actors strike.
The offer includes an enhanced residual bonus for high-performing streaming shows. Under the proposal, actors who appear on the most-watched shows on each platform will see their standard streaming residual doubled.
That is an increase over the deal provided to the Writers Guild of America, which won a 50% residual bonus for writers on top-performing shows.
The package also includes comprehensive protections on artificial intelligence and the highest increase in minimums in 40 years.
The Zoom meeting included eight leaders from seven studios: Bob Iger of Disney, David Zaslav of Warner Bros. Discovery, Donna Langley of NBCUniversal, Ted Sarandos of Netflix, Brian Robbins of Paramount, Mike Hopkins and Jennifer Salke from Amazon, and Tony Vinciquerra from Sony Pictures Entertainment. Update, 3:14Pm After Exclusive: After meeting with studio CEOs earlier today, SAG-AFTRA has put out a statement, that they’re looking over the latest proposal from the AMPTP which the studios bill as their “last, best, and final offer.”
“We received an offer today from the AMPTP, which they characterized as their “Last, Best, and Final Offer,” said the SAG-AFTRA TV/Theatrical Negotiating Commitee this afternoon.
“We are reviewing it and considering our response within the context of the critical issues addressed in our proposals,” they added.
The so-called “best and final” language is exactly what the studios said to the WGA in the final days of what were ultimately successful negotiations with the scribes in late September. The phrase and the tactic were widely derided at the time.

We are nearing the fourth month of the Writers’ Guild of America strikes that had officially gone into effect on May 2nd. A couple of months after the WGA started their picketing, SAG-AFTRA followed suit, and both have been in solidarity ever since. There have since been a couple of failed attempts at reaching a new agreement between the movie studios and the writers’ union, and the AMPTP had reportedly even hired the Levinson Group, a PR firm, to help soften their image in the public eye during the fray.

Exclusive: Amid growing speculation of internal divisions within the C-suites and a lack of any apparent path forward to end the writers and actors strikes, the chiefs of Hollywood’s biggest studios are set to gather today.
Disney’s Dana Walden and Alan Bergman, Amazon Studios’ Mike Hopkins and Jennifer Salke, Netflix’s Ted Sarandos, Universal’s Donna Langley, and Warner Bros Discovery’s David Zaslav are among those scheduled to attend the virtual sit-down later Wednesday, we hear.
Mouse House CEO Bob Iger will not be participating in this meeting, reverting to his earlier stance of having Walden and Bergman be primarily hands-on over the labor actions. Part of that for Iger, we understand, was an overall CEO approach to keep some distance to be ready for the appropriate time to get more directly engaged.
It is unclear whether AMPTP President Carol Lombardini will be present at this afternoon’s meeting.

The writers and actors strikes have brought Hollywood productions to a standstill. While mega-media companies may have initially welcomed the collateral cost-cutting for a few months, it’s time to get back to work.
To that effort, a dozen top executives from the eight main Alliance of Motion Picture & Television Producers (AMPTP) studios have been congregating on a “regular call,” Bloomberg reported on Sunday. The names on that call are: Ted Sarandos (Netflix), David Zaslav (Warner Bros. Discovery), Dana Walden and Alan Bergman (Disney), Tony Vinciquerra (Sony Pictures), Brian Robbins and George Cheeks (Paramount), Zack Van Amburg and Jamie Erlicht (Apple), Jen Salke and Mike Hopkins (Amazon), and Donna Langley (NBCUniversal).
Those are some big names — though perhaps the biggest name, Disney CEO Bob Iger, is notably missing. He’s “gotten more involved in recent weeks” and “has started to participate in many of the calls and meetings,” per the report.

Amazon confirmed Shields’ departure and noted it was his decision to leave. The streamer declined to provide a formal statement.
Shields joined Amazon in early 2020 after the position had been vacant for more than a year. During his tenure, Shields oversaw publicity for Amazon’s original films and TV series and worked closely with senior vp Mike Hopkins.
Shields arrived at Amazon after spending two decades with NBCUniversal, where he was considered the right-hand man of former CEO Jeff Zucker. As rival motion picture studios were becoming intoxicated on theatrical day-and-date releases tied to their streaming platforms during Covid, and big streamers like Netflix completely sidestepping wide theatrical releases, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav believed in the economics of the big picture.
Upon taking control of the new conglom last year, he immediately swiped away WarnerMedia’s pandemic plan of taking big pictures day-and-date on HBO Max. Zaslav believed that day-and-date ruined a film’s pantina.
Now rival streamers are coming around, and seeing the light preached by Zaslav. Amazon Studios in their billion dollar purchase of MGM returned to theatrical in a big way with the cinematic releases of Creed III and Ben Affleck and Matt Damon’s Air. There’s also Apple which has Paramount releasing the Martin Scorsese movie Flowers of the Killer Moon and Sony handling their Ridley Scott epic Napoleon.

The death of MGM distribution chief Erik Lomis on Wednesday has shocked many around Hollywood. More than just being a sage to filmmakers and executives about the motion picture business, Lomis was known for his generosity fundraising with the Will Rogers Institute, cultivating others’ careers, and even being a mentor to many in their personal lives.
“I don’t think the industry will realize until a couple of months from now how Erik Lomis was George Bailey,” Edo box office analytics partner Derek McLay, a former lieutenant of Lomis’ during the distribution exec’s early MGM days, told Deadline. “He was so many things to so many people that he touched and did quietly, and he’s intertwined in everything we do.”
(L to R) Michael G. Wilson, Barbara Broccoli and Daniel Craig attend Will Rogers Motion Picture Pioneers Foundation’s 2022 Pioneer Dinner.
Lomis oversaw the distribution of several 007 films including Daniel Craig’s swan song, No Time to Die, as well as the Pierce Brosnan canon Goldeneye, Tomorrow Never Dies, The World Is Not Enough and Die Another Day to name a few in a decades-long working relationship with Eon Productions’ Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson. Lomis was the first distribution exec in Hollywood to pivot and protect No Time to Die from Covid, foreseeing the pandemic’s impact on global exhibition before other studios followed suit. Lomis held tight on the film, championing continually the pic’s future theatrical release over any options for a streaming or theatrical-day-and-date PVOD release. No Time to Die was the fourth highest grossing movie of 2021, making over $774M worldwide. Lomis was also the host and a key organizer of Broccoli and Wilson’s tribute at last fall’s 2022 Pioneer Dinner. The 007 franchise producer and Eon Productions Chief Barbara Broccoli shares with Deadline tonight, “We are absolutely devastated by the sudden loss of our dearest and most loyal friend Erik Lomis. He was a fierce supporter of theatrical distribution and handled each film with passion and care. He is irreplaceable. A part of the industry has died with him today.”
Michael De Luca at CinemaCon in 2021
Current Warner Bros Motion Picture Studio chair and CEO Michael De Luca worked with Lomis during the former’s tenure as MGM’s chairman. De Luca, whose run with Lomis included such pics as House of Gucci, Licorice Pizza and development on Creed III, tells Deadline, “Every day with Lomis was a victory, he loved movies and exhibition so much.”
De Luca continues, “I remember how excited and giddy he was to outfit the Mann Village theater with 70mm to play Licorice Pizza and how proud he was when it broke records there. Erik’s pure film love with things like that directly led to giving MGM their first Best Picture nom since 1988 [Licorice Pizza]. He was a joy to work with, treated everyone like family, and had the best most generous spirit I’ve ever seen. He was a blue-collar, movie theater guy — irreplaceable.”
Amazon and MGM Studios Head Jennifer Salke; SVP of Prime Video, Amazon Studios and MGM Mike Hopkins and VP, Pvs Corporate Strategy, MGM+ and MGM Alternative Television Chris Brearton emailed staffers earlier today, writing:
We have some difficult and terribly sad news to share. Erik Lomis, our MGM Head of Distribution, passed away suddenly at home this morning. We wanted to let you all know as soon as we could, and will share more information when it becomes available. Let’s keep his wife and children in our thoughts and prayers as well as the teams at MGM/Uar who have worked so closely with him.
Erik was truly one of a kind and an icon in our industry. His passion was undeniable and he has meant so much to so many over the years. We are all better for having known him.
With such heartbreaking news, we wanted to remind you that our Employee Assistance Program provides grief counseling and support for all those in need.

Michael B. Jordan and the Creed III family said in a joint statement, ““On behalf of the Creed III cast, crew and filmmaking team, we send our deepest sympathies to the Lomis family as well as our movie family at MGM/Uar and Amazon Studios. We recently had Erik by our side as we promoted, released and happily celebrated Creed III. He was always in our corner and we will forever be in his.” The MGM threequel delivered the biggest box office to streamer parent Amazon with a current running global box office of $226.7M.
Former MGM Motion Picture Group president and Creed III producer Jonathan Glickman, who worked with Lomis on The Addams Family animated movie and the Rocky spinoff franchise, says, “I had lunch with Erik and Irwin Winkler yesterday to celebrate the incredible job he did releasing Creed III. He was his typical hilarious self and in great spirits about work and his family, so I am shocked and broken-hearted to hear of his passing.
“Erik was more than a colleague — he was a friend, a sparring partner and mentor who treated me like family even when I woke him up at 5 a.m. to pester him for box office numbers or tracking. There was no truer champion of theatrical movies than Erik. I can honestly say, “they don’t make them like him anymore”. He was a mensch, a class act and unforgettable – I will miss him.”
(L-r) Erik Lomis and Gary Barber in 2022
Gary Barber, the former MGM CEO and now chairman and CEO of Spyglass Media Group, says: “I’m beyond heartbroken over Erik’s sudden passing and find it hard to put into words just how meaningful his loyalty and friendship has meant to me over the years. The film industry lost one of its biggest champions today and I can’t imagine facing an opening weekend without his shrewd analysis and bold predictions. I’ll always remember how he’d include ‘007’ in his box office reporting as a nod to James Bond. Sending my deepest sympathies and condolences to Patricia, his family and to all who knew him. Fly, Erik Fly!”
In addition to being close friends, Barber and Lomis worked closely during Barber’s time at MGM and through the MGM/Annapurna joint venture.
Gerry Rich, Head of Theatrical Marketing at MGM says, “I’ve worked with Erik for almost 30 years, and he’s been by my side as a colleague, consigliere, friend, and partner for most of my professional life. He taught me so much about the business, and about how to move through this industry with integrity and compassion. He challenged me and brought out the best in me and every member of the team. I miss him already.”
Adam Aron, chairman and CEO of AMC Entertainment adds, “Like just about everyone else who knew him, at AMC we were both shocked and saddened to hear of the sudden passing this morning of Erik Lomis. He was a giant in the field of theatrical exhibition. More than that, he was a really good human being. I truly enjoyed each and every minute I was with him, and will never forget his big-hearted smile. We send our most sincere condolences to his family and his professional colleagues at MGM, UA Releasing and Amazon. Erik, you will be widely mourned and you will be greatly missed.”
John Fithian, NATO Chairman and CEO, adds, “Erik Lomis’ impact on the movie and theatrical experience literally has no parallel. Erik loved and lived the theatrical experience and brought so many major titles to our screens. I am devastated by this loss. Movie screens across America are bleeding right now. Erik was the movies to me.”
(L-r) Jim Orr, Jerry Bruckheimer and Erik Lomis in 2018
Says Universal domestic distribution boss Jim Orr, who worked with Lomis during the early 2000s at MGM: “Erik was more than a good friend, a true mentor to me and many others in this industry, someone who was larger than life not only in theatrical distribution but even more so in the numerous philanthropic endeavors he championed. Erik left an indelible mark on this world, an iconic figure that will be sorely missed.”
Says Lionsgate domestic distribution head David Spitz, who began his career working for Lomis, “I loved Erik. I respected Erik. I will miss him. My heart goes out to Patricia and the entire family. Truly a huge loss for our industry.”
Focus Features Distribution President Lisa Bunnell tells Deadline, “Erik Lomis was ‘The Godfather’ to so many of us in exhibition and distribution. A larger than life figure who was a generous leader not only in the theatrical world, but also through the charities he supported. To say Erik will be missed is an understatement.”
Warner Bros. Domestic Distribution boss Jeff Goldstein adds: “I’ve know Erik since the beginning of our careers. He was bigger than life in so many ways. As a business person, he was inventive, relentless, curious and effective. As a philanthropist, he was a tireless supporter of Will Rogers and Variety with a heart of pure gold. As a friend, he was someone you could always count on. We’ll miss his boundless energy and joke-telling. This world is truly a better place because he was here.”
Joe Garel, VP of Film at exhibitor Cinepolis Cinemas, says, “This is a sad day for theatrical. Erik was in a pivotal spot running theatrical for MGM. Erik always had our backs when we were releasing films at TWC. He was a boss I respected and he made you feel like you were part of the club. He will be missed.”

Erik Lomis, the admired distribution executive who handled numerous blockbusters and Oscar winners during his three-decade career in Hollywood, died suddenly Wednesday at his home in Santa Monica. He was 64.
As MGM’s head of distribution, Lomis was in the midst of helping parent company Amazon Studios prepare for the release of Ben Affleck’s Air, which opens in theaters April 5. Amazon recently signed Lomis — a champion of the big-screen experience — to a new deal after officially acquiring the storied film studio.
“Erik was truly one of a kind and an icon in our industry. His passion was undeniable, and he has meant so much to so many over the years,” Amazon’s Mike Hopkins, Jennifer Salke and Chris Brearton said in a note to staff. “We are all better for having known him.”

Reese Witherspoon played it cool when asked by THR at the Daisy Jones & The Six premiere to reveal what kind of creative notes she offered to the team behind her company Hello Sunshine’s high-profile adaptation of Taylor Jenkins Reid’s best-selling novel.
“I had some notes,” she said with a smile at the show’s premiere on Feb. 23, before reluctantly revealing a few tidbits, specifically about the show’s faux documentary scenes that feature the performers sitting down for their first interviews 20 years after the band’s final performance. “But they were the same notes as the rest of the creative team — about wanting to make sure that the documentary scenes felt as potent as the live footage.”
That’s all Witherspoon was willing to divulge. Instead, she turned her attention to compliments. “These people know exactly what they’re doing, they really didn’t need anything from me.

The power of a wide theatrical release was realized this weekend by streamer Amazon in its pivot back to the big screen with MGM/United Artists Releasing’s Creed III. It easily minted the best opening ever for the Seattle-based parent, as well as for the Rocky franchise, with $58.6M domestic, $100.4M worldwide.
While Amazon has snapped up some tentpole movies during the pandemic for the service — i.e. Paramount’s Coming 2 America and Skydance’s The Tomorrow War — Creed III repped a big commitment by them for the big screen following their $8.45 billion purchase of MGM back in May 2021.

Amazon’s future in streaming video has come into greater focus in 2022 with the acquisitions of Thursday Night Football and MGM and the debut of Lotr: The Rings Of Power.
