She made her debut at age 12 with the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo. She studied at the Juilliard School and the School of American Ballet.
She was a ballet dancer and dance historian and writer. As a dancer, she took a typewriter with her on tours. She was a soloist with the Metropolitan Opera Ballet, but at the New York City Ballet she danced mainly character roles.
