Although he wrote other works besides "Green Mansions", none had the
success of that novel, so he and his wife also ran an inn.
Born on a ranch in Argentina, when he was 15 he was helping to drive cattle through a blizzard, contracted rheumatic fever and almost died. It adversely affected his health for the rest of his life, and he died of heart disease at 81 years of age.
