- Prolific British cinematographer, in films as a clapper boy with Korda's Denham Studios from 1942. Chief camera operator with Cineguild in the 1950's, graduating to full cinematographer.Lensed three James Bond films and almost all of the "Carry Ons".
- All four of Alan's children and one of his grandchildren followed him into the industry. His eldest son Lindsey (who died in 1967) was in the cutting rooms. Martin Hume is a Camera Operator, Pauline Hume a Titles Designer and Simon Hume a Focus Puller. Of the next generation Lewis Hume (Simon's son), is a Camera Assistant. Also, Alan's daughter-in-law Zlata (Martin's wife), is Studio Manager at Beaconsfield Film School.
- His autobiography "A Life Through The Lens" was published in 2004 by McFarland & Co.
- Elected to the British Society of Cinematographers in 1964, serving as its president for three years.
- Served with the Royal Navy and Fleet Air Arm photographic unit during the Second World War.
