It's fun going back to watch Irvin Kershner's 1980 sci-fi epic "The Empire Strikes Back," knowing what twists would come in subsequent sequels. In "Empire," Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) became angry at Han Solo (Harrison Ford), a man Leia knew was attracted to her. To make Han jealous, Leia brazenly grabs a nearby Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) and kisses him full on the mouth. Luke knows that Leia was only playing a game, but was happy to be kissed. Han stormed out of the room, outraged. Luke smiled in smug satisfaction.
In Richard Marquand's 1983 follow-up film "Return of the Jedi," it would be revealed that Luke and Leia were siblings. This was clearly a last-minute plot twist, meant to parallel the "surprise" from "Empire" that the villainous Darth Vader was actually Luke Skywalker's father. The "Jedi" twist wasn't thought out, however, as it retroactively incorporated into "Star Wars" an...

How ‘Polite Society’ Created an Exhilarating Blend of Action from ‘The Matrix,’ Eunice Huthart, More
From the Bruce Lee poster on her wall to the spinning kick by real-life stuntwoman Eunice Huthart she spends hours trying to perfect, aspiring stuntwoman Ria Khan (Priya Kansara) lives and breathes action cinema. So did the team making “Polite Society,” which draws stylistically on everything from the heightened wirework action of “The Matrix” and “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” to the gleefully destructive chaos of “Kill Bill,” and actual, real-world karate bouts.
There’s a wonderful differentiation to the fights, which all feel as targeted and emotionally distinct as the songs in a musical: Ria slowly gets more confident, the stakes behind her sister Lena (Ritu Arya) marrying a too-perfect doctor Salim (Akshay Khanna) and acquiring a domineering mother-in-law Raheela (Nimra Bucha) get higher — and Ria’s schemes to stop the marriage get more bonkers.

Editors note: This review original published January 20 after its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival. It opens Friday.
Written and directed by Nida Manzoor, Polite Society stars Priya Kansara (Bridgerton), Ritu Arya (Umbrella Academy) and Nimra Bucha (Disney+’s Ms. Marvel). The Focus Features movie had its world premiere Friday in the Midnight section of the Sundance Film Festival.
The movie begins with Ria (Kansara), a Pakistani teenager in a karate class. She’s a purple belt who is serious about honing her skills to become a stunt woman. She records YouTube videos of her home training and recites the line “I am the fury.” Her older sister Lena (Ayra) is an art school dropout who mopes around her parents’ house and often helps Ria record her videos. Ria is obsessed with professional stunt woman Eunice Huthart, who she frequently emails but never receives a response.

During “Polite Society,” writer-director Nida Manzoor’s boisterous, shrewdly funny and altogether wonderful coming-of-age action-adventure, you might try to recall the last time you’ve seen a young female on the big screen with as much fire in her belly as Ria. Was it the football-loving and tradition defying Jess in “Bend it Like Beckham,” the precocious rebel Marjane in “Persepolis,” the all-female trash metal stars of the recent documentary “Sirens” or the real-life Syrian sisters Yusra and Sarah Mardini in “Swimmers”?
While the lead Pakistani character of “Polite Society”—a die-hard martial arts enthusiast played by a fierce Priya Kansara—isn’t an existing hero based on a real-life story of courage, her defiant spirit is so lovingly and precisely defined by Manzoor that you unreservedly believe in her when Ria claims: “I am the fury!”

There's every reason in the world for an actor to not do their own stunts. Stunt performers make up an entire sub-industry in the filmmaking world. It's simple enough to find a stunt person whose physicality matches the actor's, allowing them to serve as the celebrity's double without making the audience bat an eye. On top of that, the inherently dangerous nature of stunt work isn't just a liability to the production, but a risk to the performer's safety. Why not leave it to the professionals?
Because stunts come with serious street cred, that's why. Okay, so the actual reasoning might be a bit more nuanced. The different explanations for why an actor might want to perform their own stunts are as varied as the stunts themselves. Whether they're jumping out of a building or being lifted off 80 feet into the air, each actor has their own motivations for putting themselves in danger.

A devil-may-care approach in terms of plotting meets a careful attention to crafting detail in this riotous debut from Nida Manzoor. It’s a coming-of-age film with kick-ass moves and a spirit so punk-minded it powers past any questions you may have about plausibility.
Teenager Ria lives with her elder sister Lena (Ritu Arya) and her parents (ex-EastEnders regular Shobu Kapoor and Jeff Mirza). Ria spends her days hanging out with her mates Alba (Call The Midwife’s Ella Bruccoleri) and Clara (Seraphina Beh) and dreaming of becoming a stunt woman like her idol Eunice Huthart (a real-life artist who doubled for Angelina in Tomb Raider among other jobs).
Ria and Lena are tight, with the older sibling often being enlisted to shoot some of Ria’s stunt moves - including a particularly tricky spin kick she’s been working on, if only...

Filmmakers Quentin Tarantino and Edgar Wright are still making movies, but their signature styles already influenced an entire generation of artists. Toss their works into a blender along with Bollywood flair, and you’ll get Nida Manzoor’s feature film debut, Polite Society. This offbeat martial arts comedy doesn’t reach the heights of its inspirations, but its high-spirited nature makes it an infectious adventure.
‘Polite Society’ follows an action hero in training Priya Kansara as Ria Khan | Parisa Taghizadeh / Focus Features
Ria Khan (Priya Kansara) is a London schoolgirl who runs her own martial arts channel on YouTube, but she’s still in training. She has the dream of becoming the world’s greatest stuntwoman, looking up to one of the current best, named Eunice Huthart. Meanwhile, Ria is incredibly close with her older sister, Lena (Ritu Arya), who is an art school dropout now living back at home.

Ria Khan (newcomer Priya Kansara), the bright, shining star in Nida Manzoor’s (We Are Lady Parts) feature-length debut, Polite Society, has a dream. It’s not just any dream (it’s not that dream). It’s certainly not a dream shared by most British-Pakistani girls her age, but it’s her dream and she throws herself into it with manic energy and unqualified gusto atypical for a girl (or boy) her age: Not only does she seriously study martial arts, but she also wants to follow in the footsteps of her lifelong idol, real-life stuntwoman and stunt double Eunice Huthart. Emails to Huthart, however, have gone unanswered. That, unsurprisingly, does little to dampen the purity or depth of Ria’s unbridled enthusiasm. It’s not a dream of her lovingly earnest,...

The teenage central character of Polite Society has more energy than she knows what to do with, and so does the film that contains her.
This debut feature from writer/director Nida Manzoor, creator of the acclaimed television series We Are Lady Parts, is the sort of wildly audacious work that signifies a rising talent who can’t wait to throw more ideas into the cinematic mix. Admittedly, not all of them gel in this raucous comedy receiving its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival before a theatrical release by Focus Features in April. But even when the ambitious film overshoots, you can’t wait to see what happens next.
And a lot happens in this story revolving around Ria (Priya Kansara), a British-Pakistani girl who dreams of becoming a stuntwoman like her idol (represented by photos of famed real-life British stuntwoman Eunice Huthart), to whom she consistently writes...

If “Polite Society” were a Jane Austen novel, a big wedding would be the happiest of endings, but in the eyes of the film’s feisty teenage protagonist, Ria Khan (Priya Kansara), watching her older sister Lena (Ritu Arya) trade her art career for a husband feels like Game Over. If Lena can’t make it as a painter, what hope is there for Ria, who dreams of becoming a stuntwoman? That’s the engine driving writer-director Nida Manzoor’s rowdy feature debut, which channels everything from Sergio Leone to “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” in its wild and frequently outrageous route to sparing Lena the indignity of an (almost) arranged marriage.

UK Saturday night television in the 1990s cannibalised its own audience, relying on them not merely to watch its entertainment, but also to be the entertainment. It was all good, harmless fun, and none of it placed particularly great demands on the contestants or the audiences from which they were plucked. Blind Date invited us to trade cheesy chat-up lines with strangers, and sometimes go on holiday with people we didn’t like. Noel Edmonds wanted to secretly monitor us in our homes, and then pour gunge on us. But then came Gladiators, and by golly it wasn’t interested in giving us an easy ride.
Each week, Gladiators pitted members of the public against the eponymous gladiators: a coterie of contoured, chiselled athletes and bicep-bulging body-builders with fearsome names like Hunter, Lightning, and Warrior. Two male and two female contestants competed against the gladiators, and each other, across a series of six gruelling games,...

Ezra Miller has found himself in the headlines for all the wrong reasons recently, with footage of the actor apparently choking a fan spreading across social media like wildfire. The video could end up having a hugely detrimental affect on his career, too, with many people already demanding that he be removed from his role as the Dceu’s Flash. We’ve also heard that Miller could end up being written out of the Fantastic Beasts franchise as well, with the delayed production on the movie being the reason he’s even in Iceland to begin with.
The 27 year-old has yet to publicly comment on the matter, but how he responds could go a long way to determining his future as a part of two of Warner Bros.’ most lucrative franchises. After all, the Flash’s solo outing has already been delayed multiple times and the studio could end up...

According to sources close to Wgtc – the same ones who told us Ahsoka Tano will make a cameo in season 2 of The Mandalorian and a Green Lantern show is coming to HBO Max – WB’s upcoming standalone film centered around the Flash will most likely be delayed yet again in order to avoid competition with Disney’s hotly anticipated sequel to 2019’s Captain Marvel.
The Brie Larson-led follow-up’s new release date – the result of Disney’s hectic reshuffling of its long-term release schedule in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic – has now been set exactly one week after that of The Flash, which for now remains as July 1st, 2022. Captain Marvel 2, meanwhile, is set to be with us on July 8th, 2022.

At this point, somebody has to just bite the bullet and make the Snyder Cut of Justice League a reality, or come out and publicly admit that we’ll never get to see it. The saga has been dragging on for almost two and a half years, and yet we’re no closer to a definitive answer about the status of Zack Snyder’s original vision for the comic book blockbuster.
Fans can campaign on social media all they want, and they can start movements in an effort to drum up support, but so far all of these pleas have fallen on deaf ears, despite the director revealing that the Snyder Cut does actually exist after he started getting irritated by the number of people claiming that it was nothing more than a myth.

The Last Jedi shocked fans by introducing some new tools into the Jedi’s arsenal as it saw Leia, Luke and Rey utilize Force powers that’d never been depicted before in the saga. There was Luke’s Force projection, Leia’s float through space…even Yoda’s lightning bolt. Some were rubbed up the wrong way by this “breaking of the rules” but the franchise has got to keep developing its mythology, and it seems Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will do much the same.

We certainly felt the power of 10 former Gladiators yesterday, as we took a look at what some of the stars went on to after the success of ITV's '90s hit.
We were bowled over to discover that Blaze (Eunice Huthart) is a stunt double to A-listers and godmother to Angelina Jolie's daughter Shiloh, and that Rhino (Mark Smith) went on to star in Hollywood films including Ben Affleck's Oscar-winning drama Argo.
But whatever happened to the villainous Wolf or the infamous Shadow, who was dramatically sacked from the series? We haven't found many current pictures of this lot, but here's a little bit about what 9 more of our favourite former Gladiators got up to after their time on the show:
1. Scorpio (Nikki Diamond)

"Do you feel the power of the Gladiators? Can you face the challenge of the champions? Do you have the courage of the heroes?
"Do you have the will or the skill? Do you have the strength, the speed the heart to be a winner? Deep down in your Soul?"
These were the fundamental questions posed by ITV's original Gladiators, to both the audience and brave contenders who dared to take part. While this particular writer longed to be Lightning (her backflips were to die for), all the seemingly superhuman powerhouses were forces to reckon with - only occasionally tamed by strict referee John Anderson.
Originally hosted by John Fashanu and Ulrika Jonsson, Gladiators was what Saturday nights in the '90s were made of.

Have you ever wondered what Jet, Wolf, and the rest of ITV's Gladiators did after the show finished? Wonder no more...
ITV’s Gladiators - the show that for eight years made children everywhere become interested in sports, eating well and keeping fit... for about five minutes on a Saturday night, then we all went back to our natural state of sitting on the settee eating sugar straight from the packet.
What was it that inspired this minor surge of enthusiasm for being buff? That would be the gladiators themselves. Every week, twelve superhuman powerhouses - six men and six women - would intimidate, bully, and otherwise humiliate whichever puny contestants stepped up to try their luck, beating or hindering them in a series of physical skill games. This took place before the big finale – where the contenders would race each other up a downwards escalator, while the gladiators were...

Eunice Huthart, who worked as a stunt double for Angelina Jolie and claims to have had her voicemails intercepted, won't be able to pursue a wiretapping lawsuit against News Corp. in America. On Wednesday, U.S. District Judge Michael Fitzgerald ruled that England would provide an adequate alternative forum to adjudicate her claims. Huthart, a resident of Liverpool, England, sued last June, saying she first worked with Jolie in 2000 on the movies Beyond Borders and Tomb Raiders 2. She says she developed a close relationship with the actress and is a godmother to Jolie's first biological child. In 2004,

Things just keep getting cooler with regard to the forthcoming Disney flick “Maleficent,” as Angelina Jolie shows her massive wings in a new teaser.
The “Changeling” chick talked about filming the dramatic action scenes at Pinewood Studios in London, England, and it was quite the feat of acrobatics.
Jolie noted, “You're almost like a puppet with all these people moving (beneath you). When you go to the left or the right all of you have to move together. It's a big dance with a lot of people."
Thanks to stunt coordinator Eunice Huthart, Angelina pulled through like a pro. "She made me do yoga. And I have no patience for yoga. It's not something I do easily, because I'm not a still person. But I was forced to do yoga because (to fly) you have to have your core strength to be able to hold yourself."

Angelina Jolie may be called to give evidence in a phone hacking legal action in the United States, according to a report in the Hollywood Reporter.
The possibility emerged in the latest hearing in a case launched in California against News Corporation by Eunice Huthart, who has worked as Jolie's stunt double.
She filed her lawsuit in June this year, and News Corp responded in September by arguing that the case should be transferred to Britain, where all the other hacking claims have been dealt with.
Papers filed by Rupert Murdoch's media company said: "The compensation scheme has been extraordinarily successful at delivering satisfaction to applicants: it has received 611 inquiries from individuals alleging they were victims of voicemail interception, of whom 426 applied to join the scheme, resulting in 359 being invited to join the scheme, and 272 settling their claims thus far.

She’s busy enough with a bustling movie career and an active family life, and now Angelina Jolie may have to appear in court as part of a lawsuit between her “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” stunt double Eunice Huthart and News Corp.
Huthart claims her former employer intercepted her voicemail messages and she’s pushing to have her case heard in the State of California.
She explained, "Some of Plaintiff’s potential witnesses who are involved with her and/or [Huthart's company] Pump Fitness, such as Ms. Jolie, are located in California."
Eunice claims that she became close friends with Jolie and is actually the godparent to one of her children, so when News Corp began bugging celebrity mobile phones, they tapped into her own account and listened to voicemails that contained information about Angelina and Brad Pitt.

A new lawsuit has revealed details of the affair between Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt during the filming of "Mr. and Mrs. Smith," when Pitt was still married to Jennifer Aniston.
Eunice Huthart, who has been Jolie's stunt double in several movies, including "Smith," is suing New Corp, claiming reporters from its tabloids The Sun and News of the World hacked her phone in order to run stories about the budding relationship between Jolie and Pitt in 2004 and 2005, reports Reuters.
One such message has Jolie saying she is checked into a hotel under the pseudonym "Pocahontas," which is kind of funny, since Pitt's character in "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" is named "John Smith," the man who has been turned into a Romeo to Pocahontas' Juliet in romanticized versions of the Native American story.

Eunice Huthart, Angelina Jolie's stunt double, has sued News Corp., charging that its British newspapers hacked her phone.
Huthart filed the lawsuit on Friday, alleging that News International newspapers, including the Sun and the now-shuttered News of the World, intercepted her voice mail messages. The Wrap reported that Huthart said she hadn't been receiving phone messages left by family and friends, and found that her cell phone Pin number had been changed numerous times. The issue cropped up from 2004 to 2005.
She cited two newspaper stories that she believes came from her voice mail messages: one about Jolie threatening to stop doing movies, and another about her wanting to learn off-road biking.
The allegations emerged last year, when prosecutors in the case against Andy Coulson and Rebekah Brooks named Jolie and Brad Pitt as victims of phone hacking. Coulson and Brooks have pleaded not guilty to the charges, and are currently awaiting trial.
