She was awarded the C.C. (Companion of the Order of Canada) on June 28,
1968 for her services to Canadian-French Literature.
Major Québec author, she was born in a bourgeois family and was the cousin of poet Saint-Denys Garneau.
She was the long time companion of publisher Roger Mame.
Through her maternal grandfather's family, she was related to Étienne-Paschal Taché, a father of Confederation and to the persons on whose tragedy she based her novel Kamouraska.
