- Best known for his work on films by the directors Ken Loach and Tony Garnett.
- Was a member of the British Society of Cinematographers (BSC). Served as President from 1982 to 1984.
- Held a clerical job with Mobil Oil before becoming an assistant trainee projectionist with the BBC. Worked his way up to cameraman, then left the BBC in 1968 to freelance.
- Did two years of National Service with the RAF.
- He began his career in lighting BBC TV dramas working with such as Tony Garnet and Ken Loach before moving into films he became a Director of Photography and his many credits his credits include Buster, Empire State, Wired and Shopping.
