Beasts of Burden: Levi’s Slapstick Heist Film Runs Amuck
For his sophomore film, Israeli director Reshef Levi inserts Patrick Stewart alongside the likes of Sasson Gabai, Moni Moshonov, and Moshe Ivgy for a comedic bank heist in Hunting Elephants. While there’s mild amusement to be had amongst this group of sassy old codgers, the whole endeavor feels a bit forced. Snippets of characters directly addressing the camera frequently distract as Levi and co-writer Regey Levi cut across timespans in attempt to give the scenario added depth. Reinforcing stereotypes rather than playing with them, Levi’s broad scenario feels tonally akin to something like Last Vegas (2013) but entrenched in more archaic stagnation.
Daniel (Zvika Hadar) is a security guard at a bank. While explaining to his twelve year old son Jonathan (Gil Blank) how the new security system works, replete with all the proper codes needed to gain entry,...

You might have noticed that it's been a very long while since we've seen Patrick Stewart's presence on the big screen. It's been several years in fact, during which his voice did most of the acting, from video games and animated movies to everything by Seth MacFarlane. But now it seems that his actual face will accompany his voice, in a new Israeli film of all places.Sir Patrick will play an eccentric Brit in the upcoming crime comedy Hunting Elephants who joins a group Israeli misfits in a bank heist. Its the third feature comedy by writer-director Reshef Levi and stars some of Israel's own acting nobility, including Moni Moshonov (Late Marriage), Sasson Gabai (The Band's Visit) and Moshe Ivgy (Campfire).Jonathan is a boy genius...

My Lovely Sister
Directed by Marco Carmel
Israel, 2011
Grave-digging, the risen dead, a Charon-like figure transporting the recently deceased, and some particularly gothic wallpaper all sound like elements of a horror film.
That it’s not actually Charon on the river Styx en route to Hades, but instead Ben Lulu on a bicycle traversing the streets of Tel Aviv is emblematic of the genre plays at odds with one-another in Marco Carmel’s My Lovely Sister.
Ostensibly a work of magical realism, where anything of the supernatural blends seamlessly with the real world, making the two separable only by our understanding of the difference and not any visual representation, My Lovely Sister is domestic drama first, ghostly narrative second, and coming-of-age comedy third.
In true melodramatic fashion, the plot is a convoluted tangle of names, motivations and connectedness. Rahma (Evelin Hagoel) and Robert (Moshe Ivgy) are unhappily married. The source...

This week in Israel, television's The Mediator returns for its third season. We normally don't discuss television on the site, but it's worth mentioning that there is a significant television series ideas output that is landing in the U.S. It was announced that Fox has acquired the rights for an American remake. Quite a few Israeli TV shows found their ways to American smaller screens in recent years via remakes (the most known would be In Treatment), but this particular case is a little bit weird, for the creators themselves admit to be have been inspired by such American crime myths as The Sopranos and The Godfather. It's sort of like receiving a gift and then giving it back with a different wrapping paper. That's not to say that Israeli T.V doesn't have an original bone in their writing. On the contrary, the creative team is comprised of A list writers,...

The nominations for the Israeli Film Academy awards (The Ophirs) were announced this week and as expected, Nir Bergman's "Intimate Grammar" is at the top of the leader board with 12 nominations, but there are a few more surprises worth noting: Dover Kosashvili's "Infiltration" continues to divide audiences - his film was excluded from the final list of Best Picture nominees, but Kosashvili himself received a Best Director nomination, plus 5 other mentions for a surprising tally of six. Snapping up the Best Picture nom away from Kosashvili is "Mabul" (Flood) a surprise entry by first time director Guy Nativ. This film was warmly received by Academy members, but since this was a directing debut by Nativ, the 6 nominations (including best picture) are much more than what could have been expected. Moshe Ivgi's "And on the Third Day" is another film that divided academy members. None of them were indifferent to it,...

Shiva Directed by: Ronit & Shlomi Elkabetz Starring: Hana Azoulay-Hasfari, Ronit Elkabetz, Moshe Ivgy In their highly acclaimed co-directorial debut To Take a Wife, brother and sister team Ronit and Shlomi Elkabetz examined the strained marriage between first generation Israelis from Morocco, Viviane (played by Ronit Elkabetz herself) and husband Eliyahu (Simon Abkarian). The couple is revisited in Shiva, the latest project by the Elkabetz siblings, which examines not only the tensions between Viviane and Eliahu but a whole family during the traditional seven days of mourning, following the death of Viviane's older brother, Maurice. During this period, family members are not permitted to leave the house and the intensity of this situation is a catalyst for more than just communal grief and support as jealousies, rivalries and the myriad complexities of family life are exposed.

- Today's nine title announcement for the Berlin Festival’s main competition section (the 58th edition runs between Feb. 7-17.) is an early sign that the 2008 year in film is rich in international film from all corners of the globe and that the upcoming Cannes film festival is going to be loaded once again with heavyweight titles. Out of the titles I'm most looking forward to seeing are the little known Mike Leigh project called Happy-Go-Lucky and Erick Zonca’s French thriller Julia starring Tilda Swinton, and the postponed domestic release of Isabel Coixet’s Elegy. Here is the 9-list:Feuerherz (Heart of Fire) Germany/Austria (adapted from the bestseller by Senait Mehari) by Luigi Falorni (The Story of the Weeping Camel) with Letekidan Micael Julia France by Erick Zonca (The Dreamlife of Angels) with Tilda Swinton, Aidan Gould, Saúl Rubinek Lady Jane France By Robert Guédiguian (Le Promeneur du champ de Mars,
