Watching Jesus Revolution surge past $45 million in ticket sales for Lionsgate—matching or besting The Fabelmans, The Banshees Of Inisherin, Tár, Women Talking and Triangle Of Sadness, combined—it finally seems safe to say it. The faith-based audience is back.
Between Covid and the culture wars, it’s been a rough few years for those who make, promote and/or enjoy what are loosely called inspirational films. Sometimes the pictures are overtly religious, as with Jesus Revolution, the real-life story of a pastor and his counter-cultural following in the 1970s. Others are simply aspirational—moralistic, values-laden tales, like Creed III or Respect, about individuals striving to be more and better than they already are.
Either way, the uplift business was having tough time until Top Gun: Maverick broke through, at the strictly secular level, last year. The last explicitly religious film to top $40 million at the box office appears to have been Breakthrough,...

Two months after the moment has passed Steve Harvey has spoken about Will Smith slapping Chris Rock at the Oscars.
During a speaking engagement at Georgia State University (with initial reporting by Atlanta Journal-Constitution who covered the event), Harvey mentions how the slap was a “punk move” and he’s “lost a lot of respect for him.”
He didn’t hold back his feelings about the situation and mentioned how faith has helped him solve problems in a non-violent way. “I’m a Christian, but I’m really undeveloped. I don’t have high-level Christianity. On a scale of 1 to 10, I’m like a 2. That’s the level of Christianity I can work on,” Harvey said. “You slap T.D. Jakes, he’ll turn the other cheek. You slap me? If you sit back in your seat, Jada [Will’s wife] would have to move out of the way. That’s the type of Christian I am.

Oprah Winfrey called famed Christian leader Bishop T.D. Jakes to assure him that the villainous megachurch leader in her upcoming Own drama series “Greenleaf” was in no way modeled on the Dallas-based preacher. “The only resemblance is that our main character is named ‘Bishop’ and your name is ‘Bishop,'” Winfrey said Wednesday following a press screening of the show’s pilot at Soho House in West Hollywood. The new show’s lead character, Bishop James Greenleaf (Keith David), is the shady patriarch of a sprawling, uber-wealthy, scandal-suppressing, unfaithful, feuding family that runs a corporate megachurch in Memphis, Tennessee.
