Two members of the SAG-AFTRA board said they voted against the new contract because it does not do enough to protect actors against artificial intelligence.
The negotiating committee unanimously approved the deal last Wednesday, ending the 118-day strike. The national board approved the deal on Friday, with 86% of the weighted vote in favor, and sent it to members for ratification.
Shaan Sharma and Anne-Marie Johnson were among at least eight dissenters on the 80-member board. Both said that AI was key to their opposition, though they also had other reservations.
“There should be no AI. Only human beings should be used in what we create for public consumption,” Johnson said. “Without staving off AI, everything we achieved is for naught. It’s a waste of time.”

“Abbott Elementary” just might do it. After winning for casting, the ABC hit freshman sitcom could make history in many significant ways. After Quinta Brunson made history by becoming the first Black woman to be nominated for comedy series, acting and writing categories in the same year, she would be only the second Black person ever to win as a producer in the comedy series. The first was Winifred Hervey for “The Golden Girls” back in 1987. Also, forecast to go along with the top category a win for writing (Brunson would be the third Black person after Larry Wilmore for “The Bernie Mac Show” in 2002 and Lena Waithe for “Master of None” in 2017) and Sheryl Lee Ralph in supporting actress (she would be the second Black woman to win the category after Jackee Harry for “227” in 1987).

Warren Littlefield is looking to make more Must-See TV with Disney’s 20th Television and ABC Signature. The network president-turned-producer, whose prolific output in recent years has included “Fargo,” “The Handmaid’s Tale” and “Dopesick,” has sealed a multi-year overall deal with 20th and ABC Signature that will keep him exclusive with those studios through 2026.

On any given night, over half a million people in the United States ‘sleep rough’. I remember that evening clearly. I must have been half in the bag, pitching a cause to two philanthropists that had a penchant for Mojitos, at the bar of the Four Seasons in Beverly Hills. It was obvious that they really had no interest in whatever campaign I was trying to fund as the discussion quickly circled back to the part of my pitch that frequently spurs conversation. “Tell us again about what happened at the Motion Picture Home.”
It was a battle whose successful outcome made everyone happy, and with all of the threats of litigation, oblique references to Nazis and administration meltdowns over my blogs, there stood Harry’s Haven, rising above the contentiousness of the debate over continuum of care. Harry’s Haven was indeed a haven for Alzheimer’s patients, and it existed only because of the generosity of Kirk and Anne Douglas. Named after Kirk’s father Harry Demsky,...

NBC has canceled the summer drama series “The InBetween,” Variety has confirmed.
The show’s one and only season aired between May and August earlier this year. The series starred Harriet Dyer as Cassie, a woman who is able to see visions of the past and future as well as communicate with the dead. She uses her gifts to help her detective father solve a number of dark and puzzling murders.
The series also starred Justin Cornwell, Anne-Marie Johnson, Cindy Luna, Chad James Buchanan, and Paul Blackthorne. The series hailed from creator Moira Kirland, who also served as executive producer along with David Heyman, Nancy Cotton and Matthew Gross. Charlotte Sieling served as executive producer and directed the pilot. It was produced by Universal Television, NBCU International Television Studio, and Heyday Television.
“The InBetween” ran for 10 episodes over the summer, averaging around 2.6 million viewers in Live+Same Day while seeing little lift in delayed viewing.

NBC is closing the loop on its new spring-summer 2019 scripted series by cancelling freshman drama The InBetween.
The news is not surprising. The InBetween, starring Harriet Dyer, did not debut until after the end of the 2018-19 broadcast season. It was the lowest-rated NBC summer 2019 series in Live+Same Day ratings, something for which delayed viewing bumps could not compensate.
The InBetween‘s core creative team already has moved on to another project. In a competitive situation with multiple networks bidding, CBS in September landed with penalty Queens, a police drama from The InBetween creator/executive producer Moira Kirland, executive producer Matt Gross and studio Universal TV, where Gross is under an overall deal.
The InBetween joins NBC’s new midseason 2019 series, comedy Abby’s and dramas The Village and The Enemy Within, which also were canceled after one season.
The InBetween centered on Cassie Bedford (Dyer), who was born with a rare ability.
