Here is the first trailer for the Steve Jobs biopic, Jobs starring Ashton Kutcher. He will play the Apple founder in what looks like a very safe by-the-numbers movie. It reminded me a lot of the movie Flash of Genius with Greg Kinnear playing Robert Kearns who takes on the Detroit automakers who he claims stole his idea for the intermittent windshield wiper. Note: Dermot Mulroney starred in that movie as well as Jobs, he’s like the go to biopic sidekick. That was a good movie, but like Jobs would likely play out better on TV instead – because it’s just not that interesting.
The trailer likes to make out that Jobs was “The Original Innovator”, “The Original Rebel”, and “The Original Visionary” because movies lie. There was a lot of innovation before the 1970′s I’m pretty sure. But look, Ashton Kutcher tucks in his shirt just like Steve Jobs…...

J.G. Ballard’s novel “The Drowned World” has been optioned by Warner Bros for Heydey films says Deadline.
“The Drowned World” had its 50th anniversary publication last year and appeared in hardcover for the first time in the United States. Here is a synopsis from the publisher’s website:
“First published in 1962, J.G. Ballard’s mesmerizing and ferociously imaginative novel not only gained him widespread critical acclaim but also established his reputation as one of the finest writers of a generation. The Drowned World imagines a terrifying world in which global warming has melted the ice caps and primordial jungles have overrun a tropical London. Set during the year 2145, this novel follows biologist Dr. Robert Kearns and his team of scientists as they confront a cityscape in which nature is on the rampage and giant lizards, dragonflies, and insects fiercely compete for domination. Both an unmatched biological mystery and a...

I wish Flash of Genius were’t quite so staid, because it tells an important story, and one the likes of which we hear less and less of the more necessary they become: Robert Kearns, a Detroit engineering professor and part-time inventor, developed a device in the early 1960s to allow car windshield wipers to operate intermittently -- it’s a bigger safety issue than you might think, and this was a problem that, apparently, the big automakers had been trying to solve for years. But instead of working with Kearns, Ford stole his invention, which soon spread to the lines of all the other automakers. And then Kearns spent 30 years fighting one of the biggest corporations on the planet for a simple acknowledgment that what Ford did was wrong. (This is all true stuff: Philip Railsback’s script is based on a New Yorker article by John Seabrook.) This earnest film,...

He plays a young guy who beats up Mark Wahlberg with a baseball bat. [ for the movie The Lovely Bones ] As if this weren't enough, Jake is featured in a fashion layout in the September issue of Teen Vogue magazine, which touts him as a rising star. We're very, very excited, Kim says, understandably. He works really hard at it. He takes acting lessons. He puts everything into it. That's Kim Abel as she talks to local online site CantonRep.com (http://www.cantonrep.com/index.php?ID=432044 Category=20 subCategoryID=), about her son, the young actor Jake Abel. - - - High Profile Roles: You may not be familiar with Jake Abel yet, but in the few months or so, you will be. Actor Jake Abel has been dubbed a rising star, but he knows when to be humble — like, for example, when he meets Frances McDormand later this week at the 16th annual Hamptons International Film Festival, which opens today on the eastern end of New York's Long Island."McDormand's been in the business a lot longer than me, and she knows a lot more than I do," says Abel. "Whatever it is they have us doing with her, it's a shut-your-mouth-and-listen-to-the-master-speak situation."Abel, a 21-year-old actor from Ohio, is one of three American actors who are part of the festival's Rising Stars program, designed to draw attention to actors on the brink of success. He has featured roles in Flash of Genius, which will be shown at the festival, and the upcoming Lovely Bones, starring Mark Wahlberg and Rachel Weisz and directed by Peter Jackson. Other Rising Stars are Taylor Kitsch...

In this weekend's well-meaning docudrama, Flash of Genius, Greg Kinnear portrays an inventor who struggled for years to sue car manufacturing behemoth Ford and get them to admit that they helped themselves to his patent on the intermittent windshield wiper. (Eugene reviewed it back at Telluride, and I basically agree with his assessment.)
Despite the real-life case being settled a couple of decades ago, Ford has taken this current opportunity to point out the factual inaccuracies in the movie that they've taken issue with, doing so in the form of this handy timeline, without causing any sort of formal stir, as covered in this accompanying text. Especially considering that the film's subject, Robert Kearns, passed away over three years ago, I doubt it would (and hope it won't) come to any sort of renewed head.

I wouldn’t say that the new film Flash of Genius is terrible. It’s actually not that bad. However, it could have been so much better. The movie tells the story of Robert Kearns (Greg Kinnear), who invented the intermittent windshield wiper back in the 70s. All the auto manufacturers were trying ...

In Flash of Genius, Greg Kinnear plays the real-life Robert Kearns who fought the auto industry, claiming that the intermittent windshield wiper was his invention. Kearns' complexity is what drew Kinnear in: "He was a real character and I felt for him...he could be awfully tough. But he had this kind of innocence about him that was a little intoxicating. Flash of Genius Directed by: Marc Abraham Cast: Greg Kinnear, Lauren Graham, Dermot Mulroney, Alan Alda Time: 1 hr 59 mins Rating: PG-13 Plot: A small-town Michigan inventor’s idea for an intermittent windshield wiper is promptly gobbled up by the Ford Motor Company. Perpetually downtrodden, Robert Kearns risks everything (including his family) to take the automakers to court. Who’s It For? Fans of the based on a true story genre who appreciate a filmmaker who can authentically encapsulate an era in the past. Anyone with relative interest in the time period that separated the optimism of the 1960s, and the self-absorbed 1980s should most definitely tune in. Expectations: Early Oscar talk circulated the industry regarding Kinnear’s performance. A long-time producer who has had a hand in everything from The Hurricane to Dawn of the Dead, Marc...

It's looking like a dog of a weekend at the boxoffice.
Disney's dog, to be exact, as the Burbank studio unspools its PG comedy "Beverly Hills Chihuahua" amid expectations that the live-action-with-talking-dogs laugher could fetch up to $30 million during its opening frame. The film's canines are voiced by Drew Barrymore, Jamie Lee Curtis, Andy Garcia and George Lopez.
Family patrons form the target audience, but Disney executives hope the young-at-heart crowd also will come along for the four-legged romp.
"In all the screenings we've done, we have gotten nothing but wonderful marks from all the audiences who were on hand," Disney distribution president Chuck Viane said. "So there's no question that this is a commercial, family film, but I believe we can expand on that audience."

Flash Of Genius is one of those films that's most remarkable for all the things it doesn't do. There's a big courtroom scene, but no gavel-pounding, witness-twisting, or grandstanding lawyers. The real-life figure at the center of the lawsuit, inventor Robert Kearns, loses his family because he insists on doing the right thing year after year after agonizing year, and yet there's no shrieky "You're tearing this family apart!" confrontation. First-time director Marc Abraham chooses to give Kearns' story a serious, thinking-viewer gloss, creating a film that's unlikely to provoke cheering or nail-biting. It lets audiences think they might actually be watching history as it happened. Greg Kinnear carries the film with his stellar, controlled, slightly abrasive performance as Kearns, a Detroit electrical-engineering professor with a wife (Lauren Graham), six reasonably well-behaved but chaotic kids, and an idea. As of the film's opening '60s setting, car windshield wipers only.

The Toronto International Film Festival keeps bringing the pain with the announcement of 20 new films as part of it's special presentations lineup. I really wish I could hit the fest, but ahh well. The films which really interest me are John Crowley's (Boy A) Is There Anybody There? which is about " an unlikely friendship between a scruffy former magician and a little boy with a morbid streak. Ten year-old Edward has become increasingly obsessed with death and the afterlife since his parents turned their house into a retirement home. Universal has debuted the full trailer for Flash of Genius, a drama about college professor and inventor Robert Kearns whose invention of intermittent windshield wiper was stolen by the automobile manufacturers in the 1960s. Comparisons can be made to movies full of hope and ambition like Will Smith's Pursuit of Happyness, and Flash of Genius looks like it could be just as good. There are always a lot of great stories about successful and proud individuals in history that go unnoticed. This is one of them. Last year I saw the highly underrated movie The Flying Scotsman, a fantastic film about a determined cyclist. Flash of Genius looks like another wonderful story about a man who just couldn't let them get away with stealing his invention. And damnit, I love seeing these kinds of heartwarming films.
