Steve McQueen’s anthology series Small Axe and Michaela Coel’s I May Destroy You dominated the BAFTA TV Craft Awards on Monday.
Small Axe clinched five wins, the most on a night that celebrated behind-the-scenes craftspeople, but it was I May Destroy You that secured two of the biggest gongs for Coel: Director: Diction, and Writer: Drama. The BBC/HBO series was also victorious in the Editing: Fiction category.
Coel, who beat McQueen in the directing category alongside co-director Sam Miller, accepted her writing win. “I would like to thank every draft. There are hundreds of them, each living only briefly and sacrificing themselves so the version we watched that won this BAFTA could exist,” she said.
BBC/Amazon series Small Axe’s prizes included JoJo Williams for Make Up & Hair Design; Jacqueline Durran for Costume Design; Helen Scott for Production Design; Shabier Kirchner for Photography & Lighting: Fiction; and Gary Davy for Scripted Casting.

Alice Eve stars in the new Epix limited series “Belgravia” from “Downton Abbey” creator Julian Fellowes. The Oscar and Emmy winner adapted his 2016 best-selling novel about the upwardly mobile Trenchards navigating London society in the 1840s and the secret that could be their undoing. As Eve reveals in our interview (watch the exclusive video above), her character, Susan, has married into the family and could be their undoing. Although her character may be unlikable on the surface, this Oxford-educated actress explains, “I like debunking conventional interpretations of people. I went through that in school being thought of as a blond bimbo but I was actually quite academic, a nerd.”
Eve regards Fellowes as a feminist because he “has such deep empathy with the female position. He wrote my character with such insight and it was so joyous to play someone like that.” She credits him with helping her crack her character.

Tamsin Greig stars in the new Epix limited series “Belgravia” from Emmy winner Julian Fellowes (“Downton Abbey”). He adapted his 2016 best-selling novel about the rise of the Trenchard family in London society in the 1840s and the secret that could be their undoing. As Greig explains in our interview (watch the exclusive video above), she is at the center of the action as Anne Trenchard, a mother still mourning her daughter who died giving birth a quarter-century earlier.
Greig is best known to American audiences for the showbiz satire “Episodes,” in which she played a beleaguered British writer at sea in Hollywood. In her native England, she is regarded as a triple threat, equally adept at drama, comedy and the classics. She won an Olivier (the British equivalent of the Tony) in 2007 for her performance in the Royal Shakespeare Company’s production of “Much Ado About Nothing.” And she has...

“Belgravia” is a lavish historical drama set in the early days of Queen Victoria‘s reign that tells the story of an upwardly mobile family striving to find their place among the aristocracy. This six-part limited series on Epix is based on the novel of the same name by Oscar winner Julian Fellowes, who is fresh from the success of the “Downton Abbey” film. The TV edition of that drama set against the backdrop of the English aristocracy was an Emmys favorite, picking up 15 awards over the years.
“Belgravia” could do equally well with TV academy voters who may be eager to embrace escapist fare like this in these trying times. With its lavish attention to detail, “Belgravia” is sure to contend in a slew of below-the-line races. The video above captures the craftsmanship of BAFTA-winning costume designer James Keast (“The Long Firm”) and BAFTA nominated hair and makeup designer...

Fresh from the success of the “Downton Abbey” film, Oscar and Emmy winner Julian Fellowes returns with “Belgravia,” a new limited series on Epix that he’s adapted from his 2016 best-selling novel. Set in the well-heeled London neighborhood in the 1840s, the story chronicles the lives of the aristocratic Bellasise family and the upwardly mobile Trenchards.
Epix is rolling out this six-parter weekly with a new episode debuting every Sunday night. But Emmy voters don’t have to wait to see how the story unfolds – they can visit the Epix Fyc site to watch all six episodes now. “Belgravia” was directed by two-time BAFTA nominee John Alexander. With just one helmer for all the episodes, “Belgravia” has the feel of a film. That feeling is underscored by composer John Lunn, who won two Emmys for his work on “Downton Abbey.”

In the early days of "Luther," BBC America's miniseries returning for four nights beginning Tuesday, Sept. 3, those responsible for creating the show's look gathered.
James Keast, the costume designer, recalls the director telling them, "Go off and find something relevant to the series."
The director wanted "shades of gray with flashes of color, lots of bits of pink, purple or red, and everything else is colorless," Keast tells Zap2it.
Tasked with this assignment, Keast turned to a fantastic Ukrainian photographer "who wanders the streets of Moscow photographing people who have no hope - a lot of kids, prostitutes and alcoholics," he says. He calls the shades and textures "no hope colors."
With those cheery thoughts, Keast built the wardrobe for "Luther." Though most detectives in Great Britain wear a suit on the job, John Luther (Idris Elba) does not.

Period dramas offer delicious escapes, but no matter what era, period pieces need costumes that set the stage. "Mr. Selfridge," airing on "Masterpiece Classic" Sundays on PBS (check local listings), which unfolds in the first modern department store in 1909 England, places great emphasis on costumes.
"In Britain we don't have as much money to make programs as in America," James Keast, the series' costume designer, tells Zap2it. "One of our skills is to make it look expensive. With that in mind, we are mostly filming in a shop where the colors will be black because that was the uniform of the day, and I would like to use some color."
He created most of the costumes, but, "all of the trimmings, all of the bits of lace are original," Keast says. He regularly haunts garage sales, charity sales and eBay. "I have a huge selection of these pieces, and if I see it,...

Harry Selfridge made shopping fun. Sure, people always shopped, but it was more of a chore before Selfridge redefined the experience in 1909.
Though many Americans may not know his name, the lush eight-part series "Mr. Selfridge," launching on PBS' "Masterpiece Classic" Sunday, March 31 (check local listings), brings viewers into his world. It's well worth the visit.
Jeremy Piven ("Entourage") is perfectly cast as the brash American in the title role.
"I would describe him as a burst of bright light, hopefully endearing and a powerful energy that possibly takes up a lot of energy in the room and yet is in love with what he does and his family and makes everyone in the room feel special," Piven says.
It's an apt description for the man who seems to always have something to prove and whose charisma enchants people.
Set in England around the same time as "Downton Abbey," "Mr.

ABC is bringing viewers a four-part miniseries titled "Titanic," airing on the two days that mark the 100-year anniversary of the famous liner sinking in the north Atlantic. Since there were over 2000 people on board the ship, outfitting them all for the miniseries was no easy feat.
"On this particular production, we have about 2500 extras as well as a principle cast of nearly 90 ... a lot of the costumes have been made from scratch," says James Keast, the costume designer.
And the actors are grateful for the pieces, saying it helped them get into character and do their jobs better.
David Calder, who plays Titanic's Captain Smith, says, "This particular style of uniform that was popular and in vogue at the time is an enormous aid in playing the part. It's doing half the job for you."
