[This story contains spoilers for Succession season four episode nine, “Church and State.”]
After sitting out the entirety of season three, James Cromwell’s Uncle Ewan returned to Succession for the penultimate episode of the series, “Church and State,” delivering a powerhouse eulogy for Brian Cox’s Logan Roy. It was revealing, scathing, brimming with tragic love, giving context to the life and times of the Succession universe’s veritable All-Father, all while giving voice to the very real rage the show’s characters and its audience feel toward the Logan Roys of the world.
It’s also just the beginning of the end. Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter about his turn in “Church and State,” Cromwell has one eye on the finale, airing May 28, the last time any of the Roys will ever gather under the same roof. An Emmy-winning veteran of the American Horror Story franchise, not to mention a key cast member of another beloved HBO series,...

John McCain, who went from Vietnam War hero to become “the Maverick of the Senate,” died Saturday of brain cancer at his home in Phoenix at his home in Arizona. He was 81. He family had announced August 24 that he was discontinuing treatment for his aggresive glioblastoma.
The son and grandson of Navy admirals who have a warship named for them, McCain represented Arizona in the Senate more than 30 years. He was a decorated naval aviator who was shot down over North Vietnam in 1967 and spent 5½ years in captivity. He was offered an early release but refused, citing the military’s moral code. His father, John McCain Jr., was commander-in-chief of the Pacific Command during most of his imprisonment. The younger McCain’s experience as a Pow led him to be a leading voice against so-called “enhanced interrogation,” otherwise known as torture.

"The evil that troubles your home must see that I am your invited guest." Freestyle has revealed an official trailer for the horror thriller Angelica, which has been sitting on the shelf for two years awaiting release. Angelica is the latest film from Mitchell Lichtenstein, the director of that wacky, freaky horror film Teeth from a decade ago. This is a supernatural thriller set in Victorian England about a couple who encounter a ghost in their house after having a baby named Angelica. It's described as a "spellbinding ghost story about desire, repression and its consequences", which sounds like it could be good, but also sounds like it could be bad. Jena Malone stars, also with Ed Stoppard, Janet McTeer, Tovah Feldshuh, Charles Keating, Daniel Gerroll, and James Norton. The footage is creepy, but it doesn't seem like anything that special. Here's the official trailer (+ old poster) for Mitchell Lichtenstein's Angelica,...

In the years since his death in 2000, the work of artist Mark Lombardi has seemed even more prescient and relevant than it had during his lifetime. Lombardi’s finely-etched drawings, filled with annotated lines, circles and squiggles, traced the flow of capital and political power between various government, private and underworld actors. His subjects were American foreign policy, crime, corruption and conspiracy, and his artwork consisted of not only his drawings but the investigative work required to create them.
Lombardi’s drawings reference the drug wars, the Bcci scandal, Charles Keating and the savings and loan scandal, and Iran contra, but after 9/11, interest in his work only grew. His work, which he called “Narrative Structures,” seemed to sketch the backstory of the following decade of American foreign policy.
German documentary Mareike Wegener has made the first doc about Lombardi and his work, Mark Lombardi: Death-Defying Acts of Art and Conspiracy.

Mixing Comedy & Soap: A History of the Serialized Situation Comedy
By Doug Prinzivalli
As one of the producers of the hit web series Pretty - a parody hybrid of reality TV and soaps - I thought it would be a fun idea to take a brief look at the long history of the serialized situation comedy. The idea of mixing comedy with soap elements is not a new one - in fact it started over 60 years ago.
The First Hundred Years (CBS 1950-52) was a mildly humorous daily soap about newlyweds who are gifted with a bat-infested Victorian mansion. Sounds pretty wacky to me. After less than two years, it was replaced by something called The Guiding Light.
The Egg & I (CBS 1951-52) Based on a book by Betty MacDonald and the 1947 film (starring Claudette Colbert and Fred MacMurray) that followed, this show followed the misadventures of city folk...
