A creator economy startup has added an experienced exec to its leadership team. Will Keenan, who made waves a decade ago as the President of the multi-channel network Endemol Beyond, has resurfaced as the Chief Revenue Officer of Coy Creator.
Variety describes Coy Creator as a “business-in-a-box” platform aimed at professional creators. The startup’s initialized name stands for “capitalize on you,” and its platform allows its partners to host experiences and content on personalized URLs. With that business plan in mind, Coy is looking to transition from its beta period to an official launch that is slated for this month. For now, visitors to the Coy website can request more information about the company’s creator- and brand-facing services.
Keenan described Coy Creator as “the future of Hollywood” and heralded the company as “the perfect place at the perfect time for me to make a return to the entertainment industry.

Someone once said that no matter what time of day you watch Ed Wood's legendary B-movie "Plan 9 From Outer Space," it always feels like three o'clock in the morning. The mere mention of Troma movies has a similar effect on me; suddenly it's a Friday night down Blockbuster Video in the early '90s all over again. Friends are coming over with beer and pizza and all I need is something with guns, boobs, car crashes, monsters, and cheap laughs for the perfect night in.
Headed by the cartoonish figure of Lloyd Kaufman, the studio has produced and distributed a steady stream of Z-grade trash for over 40 years now, and anyone who was around during the glory days of rental will be familiar with their sleazy back catalog. The world of Troma is both wacky and cynical, populated by dweebs, perverts, knuckleheads, psychos, bimbos, scumlords, and violent morons.

A brand that allied itself with some of the biggest names in online video has shut down. Endemol Shine Beyond USA, the digital media unit launched in 2013 as Endemol Beyond, has closed its doors, and five of its employees have been let go.
From the get go, Beyond served as an attempt from Endemol -- known for producing TV shows like Fear Factor and Big Brother -- to increase its presence within the online video market. Will Keenan, a digital media vet, was brought on to run the studio upon its launch, and his team brought in a strong lineup of creative partners, including online video stars like Michelle Phan and Brittany Furlan as well as traditional media notables like Pitbull and Courtney Love.
Keenan left Endemol Beyond in 2015 and was replaced on an interim basis by Adrian Sexton, who eventually ceded the studio’s top spot to former Maker Studios exec Bonnie Pan.

Tyler Oakley has more than 5 million followers on YouTube. But is that enough to land him a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame? Will Keenan, president of digital-video company Streamup, thinks so. The former Maker Studios executive launched a petition Friday that would create a new category of Walk of Fame stars devoted to talent from YouTube, Vine and other digital-video platforms. The Walk of Fame currently grants stars in five categories — motion pictures, television, recording, radio and live performance. A recipient’s category is indicated on his or her star by an icon below the person’s name.

Live-streaming startup Streamup is looking to excavate a space for itself within an emerging industry, and it has tapped a strong team of entertainment veterans to help accomplish that task. When Will Keenan left his position at Endemol Beyond last month, we were curious to see where he would end up. Now, we have our answer. Keenan, a veteran of both Endemol’s multi-channel network (McN) and Maker Studios, has landed at Streamup, a startup that is looking to compete in the up-and-coming world of live streaming video. His job title is President and Chief Content Officer.
Streamup, which is still in beta, sells itself on the fact that it is a producer of original live streaming content and a curator of live streaming talent, not just a platform on which those creators can share their streams. Keenan describes it as the first “live McN,” suggesting a network of partners who will work with Streamup and share revenue earned from pay-to-view events and branded content.

Between 2001 and 2006, Endemol USA produced the reality series Fear Factor for NBC. A brief 2011 revival notwithstanding, viewers haven't thought much about the stunt-based reality show in the past decade, but Endemol's digital division is looking to change that. As first noted by The Hollywood Reporter, it has released the first episode of a web series called Fear Factor Remix that mashes up clips from the TV show.
The creative force behind Fear Factor Remix is DJ Steve Porter, who is known for putting a musical spin on viral clips. His most popular video, which remixes the Slap Chop infomercial, has been viewed more than 15 million times since its release in 2009.
For Endemol's web series, Porter cuts together Fear Factor clips based around a specific theme. The first episode, for example, is titled "The Taste In Your Mouth," and it focuses on the gross things Fear Factor contestants have been forced to eat over the years.

Whether it’s twenty seconds long or three hours, shot on a Red digital camera, Go Pro or a 16mm film camera, or viewed on a desktop computer, laptop, cell phone, AppleTV, a Kindle, or whatever — movies, music videos, TV shows, web videos are blasting their way across the Internet right this very second and being viewed by somebody somewhere in some location.
It’s a watchable entertainment overload!
Which is a great thing. More choices means more people can find videos that are specifically tailored to their individual taste and viewing habits.
The Internet has forced all transmittable moving image formats onto a level playing field. As consumers, we can now watch just about anything anywhere — granted, of course, that you’re either signed up with five different subscription services or are a devoted Internet pirate. But, that’s another story.

Endemol has hired former Maker Studios executive Will Keenan to run its new digital division, the company announced on Tuesday. The company has already pledged $40 million to this division, Endemol beyond, for the development and production of new shows. Last May, Maker Studios chose Ynon Kreiz as its new CEO, hiring him away from Endemol. Six months later, Endemol has returned the favor. The international production company has hired Will Keenan, formerly the VP of Vertical Development and Network Programming at Maker, to become the President of its new Endemol Beyond venture. Endemol Beyond is, for all intents and purposes, a multi-channel network that builds off Endemol's experience as a major TV production studio and a regular player in the web video space. The Dutch company introduced this new endeavour last week and announced its plan to invest 30 million euro (or more than $40 million, for us Yanks) in it. Keenan joined Maker Studios in September 2011, just a few months after it evolved out of The Station. Endemol was probably impressed by the big-name deals Keenan helped broker with some big name traditional media stars; during his time at Maker,...

If you’re in the mood for something really scary — and maybe a little off beat — to watch this Halloween, you’re in luck! A terrific crop of wickedly frightening and ghoulishly grotesque horror flicks that terrorized the underground film circuit have made their way to your favorite VOD streaming service just in time for this All Hallow’s Eve.
Saturday Morning Mystery, dir. Spencer Parsons (Amazon | Itunes) Saturday Morning Mystery is one of the best, most original horror movies in recent memory. The film cashes in on both the modern obsession with paranormal investigating as well as on that classic Saturday morning cartoon, Scooby-Doo. But, this ain’t no kiddie film! Four hipsters and their (non-talking) dog look to solve a good ghost mystery and immediately find themselves way in over their heads. With the release of Carlo Carlei's Romeo and Juliet, we at Digital Spy decided to take a look back at the other adaptations of William Shakespeare's famous tragedy.
The 2013 incarnation hits today (October 11) and stars Douglas Booth and Hailee Steinfeld as the star-crossed lovers, alongside Damian Lewis, Stellan Skarsgard and Paul Giamatti, with the screenplay written by Downtown Abbey creator Julian Fellowes.
There have been plenty of adaptations from over the years, so here we pick out the best of the bunch...
West Side Story (1961)
Perhaps not the most blatant adaptation of Shakespeare's play, but the inspiration is clearly abundant in directors Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins's Oscar-winning musical from 1961. The story revolves around two youngsters - Natalie Wood and Richard Beymer - from rival gangs who fall in love (sound familiar?) that fuels the feud between members of the White Jets and the Puerto Rican Sharks.

The Ghastly Love of Johnny X is the brainchild of director Paul Bunnell, one he carried about for nine grueling years. The birth of the DVD, released last week, was not an easy one, but no one was surprised. There were warnings that the end result would be deplorably off-kilter. Some, who were in the room when Bunnell's fertilized idea was first sonogrammed -- in "Ghastly Scope," a vivid black and white, by the not untalented cinematographer Francisco Bulgarelli -- had high hopes; others hinted subtly, yet harshly, for a termination of the celluloid fetus.
Inseminated (or inspired) after watching Tom Graeff's 1959 supposedly cult movie Teenagers from Outer Space, Bunnell pulled together a cast that is about 15-20 years too old for almost every part. Imagine The Golden Girls surfing, or David Spade as Tom Sawyer, and you're halfway there.
Which brings up a critical conundrum. Since Ghastly is...

"Manage change by provoking it." Alexander Manu , Keynote Speaker, Stream Conference 2013. If there were one line I could repeat about the mood at the inaugural Stream Conference from Brunico, this would be it. I have no illusions that the world of traditional "filmmaking" and the digital arena are converging so I try to attend as many new media and advertising conferences as I can. The panels are interesting, but I most enjoy mixing with the other attendees to get a boots on the ground perspective from the digital trenches.
Stream bills itself as the "world’s first marketplace and conference for Internet TV originals...bringing the independent production community together with the leading Internet TV development executives, media agencies and brands to network, do business and learn how to work together more effectively."
A very ambitious mission for a first-time event. I have to give them credit though, the Brunico team (responsible for the venerable RealScreen and KidScreen conferences) had quite a line up of speakers and execs for the panels and speed pitch sessions offered to attendees.
A few takeaways from Stream:
"You can distribute your content if you believe you can." Alexander Manu, Keynote speaker, Stream.
Billed as a "provocative author, speaker and leading practitioner in the field of strategic foresight," in all honesty Alexander Manu provided one of the best keynote presentations I've heard in years; on the level of Ted. More than a couple times I shared a Mind=Blown moment with fellow attendee Will Keenan from Maker Studios as Manu discussed his research on behavioral space and the changing context of content delivery and creation. Manu posits that "the transformation from linear to Internet TV is not a tactical challenge, but a strategic one." Hmm... See what I mean? The audio is available free here.
Most of the following panels were excellent and featured high-level execs from the likes of Yahoo! Inc., Paramount Insurge, Wme, Funny or Die, and others; with titles such as, "Agents and Managers for the Digital Age", "Meet the Newest Heavyweights to Enter Original Online Video", and "The Art of the Syndication Deal".
However as an active YouTube creator I was most interested in what the heavyweights from the McN (Multi-Channel Network) panel had to say.
Moderated by Drew Buckley (COO Electus), the panel featured Barry Blumberg (Evp Alloy Digital/President Smosh), Brett Bouttier (COO Awesomeness TV), Sarah Penna (Co-founder Big Frame), Aaron DeBevoise (Evp Machinima), George Strompolos (CEO Fullscreen), and Chris Williams (Cdo Maker Studios).
The debate rages over what these new entities "MCNs" really are and what they bring to the content table. Some are essentially aggregators of similar YouTube channels that make it easier for audiences and advertisers to find similar content to enjoy or a particular demographic to target, and others have morphed into neo-traditional entertainment content production studios. What I found most interesting about this panel was that while it was supposed to provide insight as to specifically how MCNs make money for their content partners, it morphed into a discussion of how these studios are working hard to actually move their content Off YouTube, or at least develop content that lives in more traditional spaces than YouTube exclusively. This was literally on the heels of a fascinating blog post by YouTube personality and entrepreneur Jason Calacanis decrying what he called the unfair business relationship between Google and it's content partners. Read his post here and feel free to give your two cents' worth below!
The MCNs understandably have to walk a fine line, but they all admitted to also be working on taking their content to other platforms and/or traditional TV, if not off YouTube altogether. Lucas Shaw has his own thoughtful take on the McN's discussion here.
I think a diversified strategy usually tends to be best anyhow, but in the end good content will always win. If one platform or distributor doesn't want it, keep shopping it until you find the right home for it. We use YouTube to study the market, create interest, and even make some money on the side. Our Ouija movie I Am ZoZo was essentially incubated on YouTube and we made changes to the film's script based on the demographic and viewer interaction we were seeing on our viral video.
Even while admitting that they are always trying to diversify, Barry Blumberg Evp of Alloy Digital and Smosh made a pretty simple argument in favor of staying with YouTube on some level, "Say what you want, but YouTube doesn't want to own your content like the TV networks do." A powerful distinction! With YouTube rolling out subscription channels and continuing to work on it's VOD service I wouldn't count them out as a viable long-form distribution platform. When you factor in the cost of hosting and streaming your own video content and creating a massive user-friendly social network, YouTube's terms hold their own against any broadcast deal (last time I checked NBC wasn't handing out advertising rev-shares to indie producers. or letting them own 100% of their content.)
Random quote for thought: "DVDs are still the biggest moneymaker," Brett Bouttier COO, AwesomenessTV on their DVD release of the "All Around the World" concert film about boy-band phenoms Mindless Behavior. It's true, DVDs are still hanging around so don't give up on them yet!
Interesting startup of the day:
There are a million new services popping up promising to help filmmakers get distribution or providing some automated service that is supposed to streamline the insanity of film production. As a habit I make it a point to try out most of them if for no other purpose than to see what these services think I need. As a "music licensing and technology company that provides creative music licensing solutions for all media" music licensing service Audiosocket seems to have great potential for indie filmmakers and established producers alike. I sat down with toppers Jenn Miller and Edward Averdiek and posed a couple of questions about their new service.
Zack Coffman: How can your services help producers and content creators deal with the conundrum of music licensing?
Jenn Miller: All music is pre-cleared for any media, so you can quickly and easily find and then license music to meet your needs at the click of a button using our technology.
Zc: What kind of music do you have available? There are stock libraries out there already. What makes Audiosocket different?
Jm: Our curation strategy is what differentiates us, we have a team that scouts emerging artists using blogs, venues and festivals to find great acts. As well, we just partnered up with Cue Songs, a company founded by Peter Gabriel and Ed Averdieck, to bring their well known artists to our roster of great indie artists! Their music will be available this fall.
Zc: Is it affordable?
Jm: Yes. We strive to get our artists paid fairly while using a fresh perspective on what licensing rates should be based on where their media is being used. No one will pay even $100 for a track being used for a personal video of their kids playing soccer to share with friends and family. But they're very happy to pay $2. Likewise, a wedding videographer will not pay $100 a track for a single use when they may make $500-$2000. We understand that and have priced these licenses accordingly.
Zc: What about syndication, copyright notification systems and Content ID?
Jm: Our licenses can cover all web media, just make sure you get the right license. We're also in early beta with a license identification technology which authenticates a license across the web. It will call back a license from anywhere on the web, validating its clearance rights so for those using the system, your work will not be claimed, taken down, contested, etc.
Zc: How did Audiosocket come into being?
Jm: While running an extreme sports organization, I was clearing music for these films by famous artists when I discovered a much easier approach. Instead of trying to track down and get return calls from dozens of rights holders in a timely manner within a fixed budget, I started working with my now business partner, licensing music from touring bands he'd booked for shows at one of his venues. My clients got affordable music from the freshest emerging artists and their movies helped propel these bands careers. And my job of clearing content was simplified. Win-win-win. So my business partner and I, on a whim one night over margaritas decided to start Audiosocket.

Back in February of 2012 we told you about a little indie flick called The Ghastly Love of Johnny X. Nobody heard us. Nobody listened. And now... well now the little flick has gone on to live in infamy!
CBS News is reporting that the Paul Bunnell directed film, starring Will Keenan and De Anna Joy Brooks as well as Creed Bratton ("The Office"), Reggie Bannister (Phantasm), Kate Maberly (The Secret Garden), Paul Williams (Phantom of the Paradise), and the late Kevin McCarthy (Invasion of the Body Snatchers) in his final role, has gone on to become the lowest grossing film of 2012, raking in a whopping $117.00 at the box office! How much you wanna bet it goes on to make bank on home video and midnight screenings because of that?

Revenge is a dish best served cold … and sometimes without even knowing what the entrée is. In Chop, Will Keenan stars as a man being tortured — both psychologically and physically — by a mysterious stranger (Timothy Muskatell) who claims Keenan wronged him in the past, despite Keenan’s insistence that he simply doesn’t remember the dude. With no apologies forthcoming, Keenan is ordered to first dispatch certain family members, then pieces of his own body in Trent Haaga’s bloody horror comedy.
Chop is Haaga’s directing debut and, made in 2011, still his only directing credit. Also an actor, Haaga first worked with Keenan on the set of a pair of Troma films, Terror Firmer and Citizen Toxie: The Toxic Avenger IV. They learned well under sensei Lloyd Kaufman with Chop being reasonably described as Troma-lite with a fun manic and absurdist tone with some fairly gory sequences.

Johnny X (Will Keenan) and his loyal band of outsiders have been exiled to Earth for their refusal to conform to the planet's societal guidelines. Soon after arriving on Earth, Johnny's girlfriend Bliss (De Anna Joy Brooks) makes off with his "Resurrection Suit," a full-body devise that gives the wearer the ability to puppeteer others. Bliss makes a beeline for a desert diner where she woos the local soda jerk, Chip (Les Williams), into joining her wherever she is going... All the while, King Clayton (Reggie Bannister) is trying to figure out a way to make good on his promise to have the fabulous grin of Mickey O'Flynn (Creed Bratton) grace the musical stage again. There is just one small snag, it would take a biblical miracle to get Mickey upright and performing music again. A resurrection suit sure would come in handy right about now...

Maker Studios launched "Glease," a parody video featuring Obama Girl Amber Lee Ettinger and Obama impersonator Alphacat who challenge President Barack Obama to "step it up." The vid is the first time both Barely Political's Obama Girl and Alphacat appear in the same video, and aims to inspire the president to recapture his 2008 mojo—the inspiration for Ettinger's "Crush On Obama" video that garnered over 24 million views on YouTube—through a mashup of the musical Grease and Fox's television show Glee. The parody is set to the Grease song "You're The One That I Want," which replaces the chorus with "you wanna my vote?" The campy vid features clever lyrics and solid production value coming out of Maker's studio facility in Culver City. Look out for cameos from familiar faces from the Maker family: Will Hyde, Momo Rodriguez, Kyla Leon from Tutele, Miya Beauregard, Danna Richards, and Maker exec Will Keenan.

The Station, Maker's original YouTube comedy network featuring over a million subscribers, will be the home of BobbyTV, a new original YouTube channel created by Lee and financed by Maker.
