When a sitcom reaches a certain level of longevity, it can be easy for writers to take their audience for granted. Storylines get lightly reworked, if not recycled wholesale. Cheap ratings are scored by having a significant character get married (call it the "Rhoda boost"). And there's no better way to guarantee the maximum amount of eyeballs than to have a major celebrity play themselves within the world of our favorite characters.
This typically works. Who can forget the time Bobby Brady faked a serious illness to earn a bedside visit from Joe Namath on "The Brady Bunch," or the time that pint-sized prankster Arnold Jackson pulled the same trick to get Muhammad Ali up to the Drummond's penthouse on "Diff'rent Strokes?" These are memorable episodes to be sure, but there's nothing more to them than the cameo.

Uipdated with statement from Rfk Jr gala organizers: The arguably greatest fictional TV Potus ever is not endorsing the White House bid of Robert Kennedy Jr., and Martin Sheen sure as hell isn’t showing up as a warm prop at any Rfk Jr fundraiser anytime soon.
About a week ago, invites went out for a self-described “gala” on January 22 to celebrate the independent candidate’s 70th birthday. Sheen, Mike Tyson and Dionne Warwick were reported to be attending the event as “well-wishers.” On Thursday, some of President Jed Bartlet’s old West Wing staff have gone public to declare their old boss has no intention of attending.
In fact, via Bradley Whitford and Mary McCormack, Sheen says he remains an avowed supporter of incumbent Joe Biden, not Rfk Jr.

White House hopeful Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced on Monday a decision to switch parties in his presidential bid by exiting the Democratic party and running as a third party Independent. The move — revealed during a rally held outside the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia that featured remarks by his actress wife Cheryl Hines of Curb Your Enthusiasm fame — was quickly denounced by members of his own family.
“The decision of our brother Bobby to run as a third party candidate against Joe Biden is dangerous to our country. Bobby might share the same name as our father, but he does not share the same values, vision or judgment. Today’s announcement is deeply saddening for us. We denounce his candidacy and believe it to be perilous for our country,” reads a post shared on Instagram by his sister, Oscar nominated documentarian Rory Kennedy.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom has rejected parole for Sirhan Sirhan, concluding that the man convicted of assassinating Robert Kennedy “still lacks the insight that would prevent him from making the kind of dangerous and destructive decisions he made in the past.”
Sirhan was granted parole last summer by a state panel, but Newsom still had the authority to nix his release.
“The most glaring proof of Sirhan’s deficient insight is his shifting narrative about his assassination of Kennedy, and his current refusal to accept responsibility for it,” Newsom wrote in an op-ed for the Los Angeles Times published Thursday.
The issue of whether Sirhan, 77, should be released divided children of Kennedy. Robert Kennedy Jr. and Douglas Kennedy argued for Sirhan’s release, but other children, as well as Kennedy’s widow Ethel, expressed opposition to it.

There's nothing like this: Taylor Swift has arrived to the Sundance Film Festival! The "Lover" singer stepped out ahead the premiere of her Netflix documentary, Miss Americana, on Thursday night—and debuted a new 'do while at it. The shaggy blonde lob is a familiar sight to Swifties, who pointed out that the haircut is reminiscent of the one she rocked during the 1989 album era. This marks Swift's first time back at the festival in Park City since 2012, when she attended the Ethel premiere alongside Ethel Kennedy. Swift's documentary, directed by Lana Wilson, is set to take fans inside the life of the superstar as she finds her political voice. It was just yesterday...

No Best Picture contender has gotten more mud unfairly slung at it this Oscar season than Green Book, the Peter Farrelly-directed drama that earned Oscar nominations for both Mahershala Ali for playing virtuoso pianist Don Shirley, and Viggo Mortensen for playing Tony Lip, the Copacabana bouncer who drove him on a road trip of the Deep South during the Jim Crow segregation era. Because of the clear dirty tricks campaign waged against this Golden Globe-winning film — a final round of arrows were shot this week — Deadline is providing two glimpses of Green Book to Oscar voters who’ll make the ultimate decision. Since the late Robert Kennedy provides a pivotal moment in the film, I’ve interviewed his widow, Ethel Kennedy, and sons Robert Jr and Max, for their reaction to the movie. Their recollection of how Green Book brought back memories of Rfk’s bold efforts on the...

Filmmaker Rory Kennedy was born six months after the assassination of her father Robert Kennedy. Here, she talks about living with her family’s tragic legacy and her new film about the space race
Children in the Kennedy household had to follow the rules. The horses, seals and coatimundis in the grounds of Hickory Hill – the imposing family home John F Kennedy sold to his brother Robert – might have made it feel a long way from Capitol Hill, but for a family inextricably connected to the formalities of high office there were certain expectations. Dinner was served at 7pm sharp every evening, no exceptions; each of the siblings would have their nails scrubbed and hair brushed when they took their seats at the table. Sunday mornings were spent in church, Sunday nights were for poetry recitation. That said, Rory, now 49, and the youngest of Bobby and Ethel Kennedy’s kids,...

Washington — Groups of young activists involved in gun control, immigration, the environment, and race relations were honored at the Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Awards in a ceremony that took place on the 50th anniversary of Kennedy’s final campaign victory and tragic death.
Those recognized included students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School for demanding action on gun violence and for their work in organizing March for Our Lives.

A nephew of Sen. Robert Kennedy who was convicted of the scandalous murder of a 15-year-old girl in 1975 and later was the subject of a made-for-tv movie and three books has won a new trial.
Connecticut’s highest court has ordered a new trial for Michael Skakel, who was convicted of the murder of Greenwich, Conn. neighbor Martha Moxley in a case that dominated international headlines in that era. The 4-3 decision by the Connecticut Supreme Court vacated Skakel’s earlier conviction.
Skakel was 15 at the time of the murder and the nephew of Ethel Kennedy, who was married to Sen. Robert F. Kennedy.
In a somewhat tangled case, Michael Skakel was accused of the bludgeoning death of his neighbor, Moxley. He claimed he was miles from the scene of the murder. In 1993, author Dominick Dunne published A Season in Purgatory, a fictional story that was liberally borrowed from the Moxley case.

He's a free man once again... for now. Ethel Kennedy's nephew Michael Skakel has once again learned that the murder conviction for allegedly beating his teenage neighbor to death when he was a child has been vacated by a Ct court. The Kennedy cousin might soon be facing yet another trial, 43 years after the crime took place. A 15-year-old girl named Martha Moxley was bludgeoned with a golf club in 1975. Skakel was also 15 at the time, and lived nearby. The case was cold for years, and Skakel wasn't linked to the crime until he was in his late thirties, and found guilty for her murder in 2002. A three-week trial laid out his history of drinking and drug use, and he was sentenced to 20 years to life in prison. Martha Moxley. (Photo Credit: Getty Images) Shockingly, his conviction was vacated by a lower court in 2013, and he was released on bail.

Fitting an entire life into four hours is a tall task for any documentary filmmaker. Doing so for a member of the Kennedy family is even more impossible. Focusing on Robert F. Kennedy, middle brother, reluctant politician, and eventual national candidate meant that director Dawn Porter had a very specific guiding idea for the new Netflix documentary series “Bobby Kennedy for President.”
Using a wealth of archival footage showing Kennedy’s public and private life, Porter wanted to keep a consistent force that bound all of these selected stories from a life that simply had too many to include all of them.
“We very quickly realized there’s so much there that you can’t tell everything. There’s just thousands of Bobby Kennedy stories,” Porter told IndieWire. “So the motivating question I wanted to explore was, ‘How does this show us how Bobby Kennedy evolved? What does this particular...

Ethel Kennedy took up the patriotic mantle her family is famous for on Tuesday at the Hyannis Port Independence Day Parade.
Kennedy, 89, was behind the wheel of a golf cart wearing a patriotic ensemble of white pants, a striped top with a red cardigan, as well as a blue scarf around her head. Her daughter Kerry sat beside her as they drove the short parade route.
In recent years, Kennedy and her golf cart have been a fixture at the parade as she spends every summer at her home in Hyannis Port. They followed a parade float that carried many of Kennedy’s grandchildren.

What drives a man to surf down an avalanche of 100 feet of water? It’s a question Academy Award-nominated and Emmy-winning director/producer Rory Kennedy explores in her portrait of legendary surfer Laird Hamilton, which will premiere at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival.
“Take Every Wave: The Life of Laird Hamilton” includes incredible cinematography of Hamilton’s death-defying surfing, but the film is also an intimate look at the life of the man who became the legend. On Wednesday, the Arizona Republic newspaper endorsed Hillary Clinton for president. And while their readership may be a fraction of the New York Times's, their endorsement of Clinton is far more significant: Since the paper was first published more than 120 years ago, back in 1890, its editorial board has never thrown its weight behind a Democratic candidate. That's right: not Roosevelt, not Kennedy, not Carter, not the first Clinton - not even President Obama. Its history, the paper said, "reflects a deep philosophical appreciation for conservative ideals and Republican principles." But "this year is different," the paper's editorial board wrote. "The...

"The...

It was a day of reflection for Kick Kennedy. This week, Kennedy, the daughter of Robert Kennedy Jr. and granddaughter of Robert and Ethel Kennedy visited the grave of her great aunt and namesake, Kathleen "Kick" Kennedy, who died in a plane crash in 1948 at just 28 years old. The late Kick Kennedy is buried at Chatsworth House, home to the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire. She was married to Billy, the Marquess of Hartington, who was the heir apparent to the 10th Duke of Devonshire before he was killed in action during World War II in 1944, just four months after their wedding.

Fourteen years after Michael Skakel was convicted of murdering 15-year-old friend Martha Moxley, his cousin Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has written an explosive new book, Framed, that claims they got the wrong man. In the new book, Kennedy writes that Skakel, whose conviction was set aside in 2013 and now faces the possibility of a new trial, was "framed" for a murder he never could have committed. Kennedy, 62, also names the two men - Adolph Hasbrouck and Burr Tinsley - he believes are guilty of the murder. (Neither man was ever charged with the murder and neither could be reached for comment for this story.

Many people believe Michael Skakel killed 15-year-old Martha Moxley in 1975. But his cousin Robert F. Kennedy Jr. isn't one of them. "There were a lot of suspects who had much stronger evidence against them than Michael," Kennedy, the son of slain Sen. Robert F. Kennedy and Ethel Skakel, tells People exclusively. Skakel's murder conviction in Moxley's death was set aside in 2013, when a judge ruled that his original defense attorney, Mickey Sherman, was inadequate. Skakel has been free ever since, released on a $1.2 million bond, and is awaiting a state Supreme Court's decision on whether or not he will receive a new trial.

The fate of Kennedy cousin Michael Skakel is in the hands of six Connecticut Supreme Court judges. On Wednesday in Hartford, those judges heard testimony to determine if Skakel - who was convicted in 2002 of murdering his neighbor before the conviction was reversed - will receive a new trial or whether he will be sent back to prison to finish his 20-year to life sentence. Director John Frankenheimer.
I'm often asked which, out of the over 600 interviews I've logged with Hollywood's finest, is my favorite. It's not a tough answer: John Frankenheimer.
We instantly clicked the day we met at his home in Benedict Canyon, and spent most of the afternoon talking in his den. A friendship of sorts developed over the years, with visits to his office for screenings of the old Kinescopes he directed for shows like "Playhouse 90" during his salad days in live television during the 1950s.
We hadn't spoken for nearly a year in mid-2002 when the phone rang. It was John, who spoke in what can only be described as a "stentorian bark," like a general. "Alex!" he exclaimed. "John Frankenheimer." He could sense something was amiss with me. It was. My screenwriting career had stalled. My marriage was progressing to divorce. I had hit bottom. John knew that...

At last Saturday’s lively and informative annual Women’s Panel – expertly moderated by Madelyn Hammond – at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival , filmmaker Rory Kennedy had the capacity crowd roaring when she offered her brother Christopher’s two part definition of the kind of movies she makes: “Depressing . And more depressing”. That is not entirely the case for this veteran of more than 25 docs including her landmark HBO portrait of her mother, Ethel Kennedy in Ethel. But nothing she had done before could prepare us for the power and sheer brilliance of her latest, the Oscar-nominated feature Documentary , Last Days In Vietnam, which chronicles the final waning moments when we had to abandon Vietnam for good, heartbreakingly leaving behind hundreds of South Vietnamese refugees trying to get out, but abandoned at the last minute. The film was made under the ausopices of PBS’ American Experience and though it faces tough,...

Stevie Wonder also received the honor, and Obama remarked that Stevie's Talking Book album was the first he bought with his own money. Directed by Rory Kennedy, Last Days in Vietnam focuses on the final weeks of the Vietnam War in April 1975 and the Americans who tried to rescue as many South Vietnamese refugees that they could — against White House orders — as the North Vietnamese Army approached Saigon. Kennedy has never been nominated for an Oscar, but her 2012 documentary Ethel, about Ethel Kennedy (Rory’s mother), was nominated for five Emmys.
