There are adventure films, and then there are coming-of-age or slice-of-life dramedies. Both of them have something in common, I think, even though they are totally different genres. Both have to have a sense of fantasy somewhere. Sure, the nature of it will differ, but the element is still there. The new movie Friday Night Plan seems like a slice-of-life drama at first, promising to revolve around the lives of two brothers, Sid and Adi. Later, it turned into an adventure film, where the hopes of seeing the two brothers fall deep into the rabbit hole engaged me, but the film didn’t go far enough. It was content with roaming in known territory. As far as being a coming-of-age film, it didn’t risk much. This upbeat contentment is what I think limited the film from exploring enough. The idea and the characters were there to take that leap of faith.

It also became a hit on Netflix, finding a global audience who appreciated the film’s themes and structure. Around the turn of the century, modern reimaginings of Shakespeare had reached a fever pitch. Audiences were rediscovering the Bard's work through a string of stylish Hollywood films ranging from Baz Luhrmann's bombastic “Romeo + Juliet” to Michael Almereyda's gen-x-courting “Hamlet” to fun teen comedies like “10 Things I Hate About You.” It wasn't long before the trend reached the Indian film industry, which had previously produced only a small selection of Shakespeare adaptations. The charge was led by Vishal Bhardwaj, who received widespread acclaim for 2003's “Maqbool,” his violent take on “Macbeth” featuring Irrfan Khan in the lead role. Transposing the Scottish Play's power struggles to 21st-century Mumbai, Bhardwaj takes a haunting approach to the material, leaning into the bloodshed while playing with the supernatural moodiness and psychological torment of its protagonist. Bhardwaj would continue his Shakespeare trilogy with “Omkara” (“Othello”) in 2006 and “Haider” (“Hamlet”) in 2014, both...

There are two new wide or semi-wide releases this weekend, “The Last Voyage of the Demeter” and “Jules,” but how many moviegoers will actually buy tickets with so many other stronger contenders still in theaters? Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
Before we get to the new movies this week, we probably should address the “Barbenheimer” in the room. There’s very little doubt that “Barbie” can pull off a rare fourth weekend at #1 with upwards of $32 million or more after holding up so well against “Meg 2” and the “Ninja Turtles” this past weekend. Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” also has a good chance at reclaiming second place, since it’s likely to have a smaller drop-off this weekend than both of last week’s new movies.
