Classic 1990s comedy chat show The Kumars is returning to television, here are the details.
In the 1990s, there were two shows which brought black British comedy into the mainstream. The first was The Real McCoy, a sketch show which launched the television careers of double acts Curtis Walker and Ishmael Thomas, and Llewella Gideon and Collette Johnson. Later series featured Robbie Gee, Eddie Nestor, Judith Jacob, Kulvinder Ghir, Meera Syal and the much missed Felix Dexter, amongst others.
The second series was sketch show Goodness Gracious Me, which premiered on the BBC in 1997. Taking an irreverent look at Asian-British experience, the series is probably best known for the now iconic ‘Going For An English’ sketch, which poked fun at the stereotypical British experience of going for a curry, but flipping races to an Indian family going out for bland English food.

South Asian representation in cinema has come a long way, with increased visibility and recognition in the last few years. However, despite the progress made, it is important to acknowledge that there is still work to be done to ensure more authentic and inclusive portraits of the diverse South Asian community in cinema and provide opportunities for South Asian filmmakers and actors to tell their stories on their own terms. In this regard, director Isher Sahota – of extensive television experience – has teamed up with writer James Hey and producer Jon Tarcy of independent production company Bonaparte Films, to bring to the public “The Effects of Lying”, a British comedy/drama with an all-Asian cast. “The Effects of Lying” is the first feature film for Sahota and Tarcy and has been acquired by the streaming service Itvx.

“The film was screened at Angelika [Film Center], or was it Lincoln Center? I don’t quite remember now,” quipped Gurinder Chadha while recalling her visit to New York from twenty years ago for the screening of her debut film, Bhaji on the Beach.
The British filmmaker is at Village East Cinema in downtown Manhattan, where the New York Indian Film Festival is celebrating the twentieth anniversary of her iconic film. “I hadn’t expected the response it got then. Janet Maslin from The New York Times reviewed it, though I didn’t understand that it was a big deal!” she said. Later, when the Los Angeles Times carried a full-page review of the film, Chadha gauged its popularity across cities in the United States.

Gurinder Chadha speaks to Subhash K Jha about her next film It's A Wonderful Afterlife. Tell us about your new film. Frank Capra's It's A Wonderful Life is one of my favourite films. It's A Wonderful Afterlife takes me back to the Bend It Like Beckham territory. Sanjeev Bhaskar and Shaheen Khan are there. I've actors from Beckham back in my new film. It's that kind of film. It takes me back to my Punjabi roots, very West London. What would be an interesting challenge for my leading lady Shabana Azmi is that, for the first time, she plays British Indian. We haven't seen her do a British film. Shabana will be playing an Indian woman who has been living in Britain for the last 45 years. She's never done that before. Besides, I've a completely different take on being British Indian from what Indians perceive. My film is going to be the quintessential British comedy.

Variety reports that the British/Indian horror/comedy It’S A Wonderful Afterlife (which we first reported on here) is back on track after the initial financing fell apart following the Mumbai terrorist attacks. A cast has also been lined up for the film, which will be directed by Bend It Like Beckham’S Gurinder Chadha.
